Xbox Series X Review: Final Thoughts And Summary

The Xbox Series X is a spectacular console. Every aspect of it is dripping with the love of a massive team that clearly cared about every millimeter, every line of code that was poured into this monolithic whole. Waiting for the full-blown feature set of RDNA 2 may cost Microsoft the sales race in Q4, but for those who are lucky enough to get their hands on it, the Xbox Series X is console gaming at its most excellent and most refined.

Xbox Series X is console gaming at its most excellent and most refined.

In terms of the ecosystem the Xbox Series X is attached to, Microsoft has struggled to change the narrative over its exclusive game offering, but that’s beginning to change. A tidal wave of investment has brought the entire ZeniMax portfolio exclusively under Xbox, alongside a robust lineup of satellite studios which include heavyweights like Obsidian, Playground, 343i, and many more.

The backward-compatibility effort on the Xbox Series X cannot be understated for its meticulousness and execution. Thousands upon thousands of games are launching with this console, from your favorite service-type experiences like Rocket League and Fortnite, to single-player classics like DOOM and Fallout 4. Hundreds of games are effectively getting free “remaster” treatment, boosted to their maximum resolutions and frame rates thanks to the forward-looking design of the Xbox ecosystem architecture.

A Global Semiconductor Shortage Could Still Cause Trouble

Throughout 2020 and 2021, there were notable problems in the distribution Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5, as well as issues with the new Nvidia graphics cards. One of the chief issues in this supply chain was a global shortage in semiconductors, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Semiconductors are essential bits of hardware for many modern electronic devices, from cars to game consoles. During the pandemic, due to a lack of consistent labor in production plants, the supply of these semiconductors began to dwindle drastically.

As a result of this shortage, electronics suppliers worldwide felt a significant pinch in terms of what they could and could not ship. Arguably the most noticeable effect of this difficult time for semiconductors was felt among console gamers everywhere. Most obvious with the PS5 shortages, but to a lesser extent the Xbox Series X/S, the supply of hardware very quickly failed to meet the demand.

The Steam Deck is slated for a release during holiday season 2021. This obviously gives fans insight as to what exactly Valve was doing during COVID, but it might also be cause for concern. If Valves console releases while there is still the shortage in semiconductors around the world, it will likely encounter similar issues as the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. Unfortunately for the company, this is an unprecedented time for electronics supply chains, so when this problem will be back to normal is anyones guess.

Valve’s Previous Hardware Had Shortages

Xbox Series X Will Be Able To Play Steam Games, Rumour ...

Not only does Valve have to contend with a market in the midst of a massive resource crisis, but it also has to deal with its history of troubled hardware releases. Throughout the launch and release of the HTC Vive, many users reported problems getting the Vive from Steam. While it should be noted that Steam was not the only company affected, there were also many shortages among Oculus Rift stock, indicating a potential issue with Steams ability to meet the demand for its physical products.

Of course, one of the distribution issues that the Vive faced was supply and demand of a brand new, relatively unestablished technology in the gaming sector. However, the Steam Deck arguably faces a similar problem. For Valve, a handheld gaming device is entirely untested waters. Not only that, but the Deck would be one of the only vaguely competitive handheld options to go up against the Nintendo Switch. Thanks to the sales juggernaut that is the Switch, Nintendo currently has an effective monopoly on the handheld console market.

So, not only does Valve have to contend with its historic issues with providing all the products its customers want, but it also has to go up against the dominant market opponent that is the Nintendo Switch. With the Switch being such a well-established handheld option in 2021 , Valve need to make sure it can fulfil the demand of its customers. If it fails to do so, it might lose out in a big way to the widely distributed Nintendo Switch.

Can You Play Steam Games On Xbox One Or Xbox Series X

Officially, Steam games are not available on Xbox. Unless, of course, they are games that have also been released specifically for those consoles. It simply wouldnt make financial sense for Microsoft to allow players to buy games from a 3rd party to play on the Xbox. But as we noted above, there are ways to use your Xbox to access some games from your Steam library. GeForce Now allows access to Steam, as well as to Epic Games. So if this browser update gets made available to the public at large, this will widen your options considerably.

As mentioned above, the Wireless Display App does allow you to cast your PC to your console, and play your Steam games that way. While it isnt the same as a native app, its something. An imperfect solution, but certainly better than nothing.

You Can Easily Expand Your Storage

The Xbox Series X comes with a 1TB internal NVMe SSD, which enables super-fast load times and new features such as Quick Resume. However, with game install sizes getting larger with every generation, drive space might be at a premium before too long.

Luckily, users can add more storage thanks to Seagate’s 1TB Storage Expansion Card, which is specifically designed for Xbox Series X and Series S. It slots into the back of the rear of the system, much like a memory card, and means you’ll have more room for games should you require it.

Xbox Series X Allows Your Tv To Make The Most Of It

Steam on Xbox Series X

This week, Microsoft also announced that it is working closely with television manufacturers to get their devices to play nice with the Xbox Series X. Finding the correct display to get the most out of your gaming console has long been an arcane art, but it simply shouldnt be that hard.

A feature that Microsoft is calling Dynamic Latency Input more closely synchronizes the controller with whats displayed on the screen, with the promise of more responsive gameplay. HDMI 2.1 support will allow for the console to output higher resolutions and frame rates on TVs that allow for those advanced features, rather than limiting the hardware to 4K resolution and 60 fps like the current-gen consoles.

Microsofts announcement echoes the same sort of attention paid over the last decade in PC gaming to features like Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync, as well as high refresh rate monitors that are now common.

Gaming In 202: Films From Favourite Franchises

Could 2022 be the year that finally brings us a great film based on a great game? No, not Sonic The Hedgehog 2 or the currently untitled Mario movie . Uncharted comes to the silver screen in February 2022, directed by Ruben Fleischer. Fleischer is best known for directing Zombieland, Zombieland: Double Tap and Venom, and hes cast Tom Holland as Nathan Drake with Mark Wahlberg as his mentor Sully. We have high hopes.

Were also hoping that the 2022 Borderlands movie, helmed by Eli Roth, will take its comedy cues from the earlier games and not the trying-too-hard Borderlands 3. Still, with Jack Black as Claptrap its going to be worth a watch.

Well also see some new shows based on games, most notably The Last Of Us. Expect to see PUBG and Splinter Cell on your streaming highlights this year too.

Xbox Family Settings App Is A Blessing For Parents

Worried about what the little ones are up to when theyre playing on the Xbox? Or perhaps youd like more control over how much your kids play during the week? The Xbox Family App looks set to be a blessing for parents, who might need more help when it comes to managing a childs overall screen time.

Using the Xbox Family App, parents can set play limits and age restrictions, and even manage who theyre able to connect with. That means if your kid receives a friend request, you can check it first to ensure that yes, they really are a friend, or block them entirely.

How Can I Play Steam Games On Xbox Series X

First, the bad news: to play Steam games on Xbox Series X|S, you need to be a member of the Xbox Insider Program and belong to the Alpha Skip Ahead group. If you are, you can download a brand new version of the Microsoft Edge browser on the console, which is based on the Chromium engine.

This means that the browser on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One is finally able to run web browser apps. In addition toDiscord or Google’s streaming service Stadia , it also includes NVIDIA GeForce Now. Now that’s what we really care about. This allows you to access your Steam library on the console.

Some games may still be rather unplayable because mouse and keyboard are not supported by the Microsoft Edge browser but with so many options to choose from, that’s a minor inconvenience.

Some games aren’t supported yet, most notably Horizon Zero Dawn and Detroit: Become Human, but that may change soon.

GeForce Now can be used for free, but we recommend the founder membership, which costs 27.45 for six months and lets you play for more than an hour at a time with active ray tracing.

Xbox Series X Review: Games And Ecosystem

You Will Be Able To Play Steam Games on Xbox Series X

Witcher 3’s performance mode hits 4K 60 FPS with ease, even without the future optimization patch CD Projekt RED is working on.

The Xbox Series X has promised to be the “world’s most powerful console,” but what does that mean in reality? At least, in theory, it means that games will hit 60 frames per second more consistently, at 4K resolution more consistently, while also bringing in some next-gen visual features. Some of those advanced features include ray-tracing reflections and shadows, which aims to cast light more dynamically, rather than artificially, elevating the visual fidelity of your games. Microsoft also offers FPS Boost and Auto HDR to enhance past-gen games, too, while other companies are eager to sell those enhancements for a premium.

The architecture brings in some of the latest tech from AMD, with a massive CPU boost over the past-gen consoles. The way Microsoft has built its Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S platform enables past-gen games designed for Xbox One to gain natural performance boosts on Xbox Series X.

Gears 5 is staggering in its beauty, a monument to the skill and passion of The Coalition.

Xbox Series X Performance

Honestly it’s been tough to really get a real grip on the performance of the Series X at its peak. We’ve not had a chance to use anything that really takes advantage of the higher-spec hardware at its disposal from the review program games that we’ve been provided with.

We’re really still waiting for that in-your-face, this is next-gen moment

And that means we’re really still waiting for that in-your-face, this is next-gen moment. We’ve come to expect a sort of step-change in fidelity at the start of a new console generation and right now it all feels rather incremental.

We were hoping that Watch Dogs: Legion would give us our first taste of ray tracing on a console, but that was purely the One X version operating under backwards compatibility mode. Then there’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, another to promise the RT funtimes, but like Legion we won’t get to see that until launch.

In fact there’s nothing really transformative at launch about this next generation of console hardware, especially coming from using a decent gaming PC for any length of time.

Except for that lightning SSD and its Quick Resume feature.

That at least is actually quite brilliant and genuinely makes it feel like a step on from how storage is utilised on PC. Sure, it takes up a chunk of space, but on the Series X that’s far less of an issue with 1TB to play with, and the way it takes you back into any compatible game in ultra quick time is fantastic.

Xbox Series S Wins Black Friday Sales

The cheapest became even cheaper and gamers loved it

Many gamers arent that interested in the still relatively expensive 4K gaming and this is more than evident by the fact that Microsofts cheaper next-generation offering Xbox Series S was the best-selling console on Black Friday 2021. According to data company Adobe Digital Economy Index, whove analyzed over 1 trillion clicks to retail sites, the £250 box outsold was the best-selling console on Black Friday, outselling the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and the Nintendo Switch.

Gamers are looking for a cheap deal during Black Friday, and nothing beats an already relatively cheap next-gen console that was sometimes sold at $250/£220 during Black Friday sales. The best thing about Xbox Series S is well integrated with the Xbox Game Pass and Microsoft recently had a super-cheap, $1 for three months worth of subscription deal. This means that you could enjoy three months of the newest next-gen games for literally nothing when compared to doing the same on the more powerful consoles or the PC. Its easy to see why many went for the Series S. For more information, check out our original news coverage.

Quick Resume Lets You Suspend And Resume Multiple Games

A game-changing feature if there ever was one, the Xbox Series X and more affordable Series S both support Quick Resume, which lets you suspend and resume multiple games at a time.

While the overall limit differs depending on which titles you’re running, the ability to pick up where you left off across several games in around 12 seconds or less means you’ll never have to agonize over what to play. Not everything will work, mind you games with persistent online worlds like Sea of Thieves for example but Quick Resume is likely to become everyone’s favorite new feature to show off.

Is The Xbox Series X Worth It

STEAM COMING TO XBOX Series X???

The Xbox Series X is an impressive upgrade over its predecessor and features the same starting price as the Xbox One X that launched back in 2017. For buyers, the console has a lot going for it. Its powerful, offers amazing backwards compatibility, and has an ace in the hole in Xbox Game Pass. Overall, it offers a great balance of power and value for money.

That said, there isnt a truly compelling reason to buy one just yet, especially if you have the Xbox One X. The library is still limited more than a year after release, and you can play most new games on an older console as well, even if not at the highest possible quality.

Theres definitely a lot to look forward to though! To answer the question, the Xbox Series X is absolutely worth it. If youre looking to buy into the Xbox ecosystem for the first time, the Series X is the best choice . If youre in the market for an upgrade though, you can hold off for a while. This is probably what youd have to do regardless, given how difficult it is to get your hands on one right now.
