How Do Backwards Compatible Games Work
To begin with, the Xbox One and Xbox Series X are both similar in design and use more PC hardware than console specific. This makes the games from the One easier to integrate into the Series X. One of the reasons the One has trouble with 360 discs was the incompatible hardware, which isnt going to be an issue between the One and Series X. Even though the difference is noted between the Series X and the One, Microsoft has promised that there will be a way to still play your 360 games on your Series X.
The process for reading 360 games will likely be similar to that of the One. The Series X will most likely scan the disc and download the actual game from Microsofts database. The original Xbox has also been mentioned by Microsoft, but the chances are high that these games may be only available via digital downloads. While it is possible to use Original Xbox discs the same way 360 discs are used in the One, the architecture may just be too far apart to work in a straight-forward fashion.
Microsoft has noted that over 1,000 Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles will be available for play but has not yet stated any titles. You can most likely expect the companies on flagships series like Halo to make an appearance. Interestingly enough, Microsoft also noted that Series X will actually run older games better, giving them a performance boost. Games are speculated to be rolled out in sets for backward compatibility, much like the way 360 games were added to the Ones library.

The post explains that all currently backwards compatible titles from the original Xbox and the Xbox 360 will be brought forward to the Xbox Series X, while Microsoft is still compiling the list of Xbox One games that will be backwards compatible on day one.

Microsoft has not announced any new additions to the Xbox and Xbox 360 backwards compatibility libraries for Xbox One for some time, saying at E3 2019 that the focus was shifting towards backwards compatibility for what we now know is the Xbox Series X. Microsoft stated in a blog postthat it “knew from the outset that they wanted to double down on compatibility” and have committed to ensuring “the thousands of games on Xbox One, including Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, will play even better on Xbox Series X”.
This echoes what Xbox boss Phil Spencer said in a previous blog post, where he succinctly outlined Xbox Series X backwards compatibility support.
“Our commitment to compatibility means existing Xbox One games, including backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, look and play better than ever before,” Spencer says. “Your favorite games, including titles in Xbox Game Pass, benefit from steadier framerates, faster load times, and improved resolution and visual fidelity all with no developer work required. Your Xbox One gaming accessories also come forward with you.”
As Microsoft’s latest blog post explained, next-gen backwards compatibility is also tied to the future compatibility of the Xbox One. Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty previously confirmed that, for the first few years, all Xbox Series X games will also be available on Xbox One.
This leads us to Microsoft’s Smart Delivery program, which will help connect the company’s multi-console ecosystem.

Store And Play Older Games On External Drives
Storage space is at a premium on the latest consoles, with a 1TB solid-state drive included on the Series X and 512GB on the Series S. While this storage is fast and bound to do wonders for load times, you might want to hold off on using it for older Xbox titles.
Xbox Series games that are designed for the latest consoles require the use of the SSD to run. Without the added speed afforded by the internal drive , these games wont work. You wont be able to install next-gen titles like Halo: Infinite on a regular USB hard drive.
Older titles dont have this requirement, since older games were designed with slower mechanical hard drives in mind. As a result, Microsoft has made it possible to store older games on external drives. Its up to you whether you go for an old fashioned spinning hard drive, or something a little snappier like an external solid-state drive.
Early analysis from Digital Foundry showed that an external SATA SSD offers the best performance in older titles that arent stored on the internal drive, with an external NVME SSD coming in a very close second. Spinning hard drives are still an option, but the technology is showing its age now.

Microsoft has revealed details on how Xbox Series X backwards compatibility will work, calling the new Xbox “the most compatible next-generation console”.
In an Xbox Wire post, Jason Ronald, director of program management for Xbox Series X, revealed that the Xbox Series X will launch with thousands of games, across four generations of Xbox. Not only that, but these games will “play better than ever before” thanks to Microsoft’s new HDR reconstruction technique and the Xbox Series X’s Quick Resume feature.
In addition, the Xbox Series X’s powerful specs will enable select backwards-compatible titles to run at higher resolutions or double the frame rate.
“As gamers, we also know how important it is to preserve and respect our gaming legacies,” Ronald wrote in the post. “Your favorite games and franchises, your progression and achievements, and the friendships and communities you create through gaming should all move with you across generations. Not only that, your favorite gaming accessories and peripherals should also move forward with you as well.”

Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit
We get a new Dragon Ball Z fighting game every other year or so, and theres no shortage of them on Xbox Series X. But back on the Xbox 360, we got Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit, which is arguably still one of the best entries in the franchise. With gorgeous cel-shaded graphics, a big cast of playable characters and surprisingly tight fighting mechanics, Burst Limit paved the way for a game like Dragon Ball FighterZ, which made a big splash on the professional tournament scene. Of particular interest is a mechanic which lets you charge up your ki and transform into a Super Saiyan if your opponent gives you enough time to do so.

The Xbox Series X Needs More Original Xbox Games
Not too long ago, Microsoft stopped adding games to the Xbox One compatibility list. Developers shifted their efforts to making old games available on the Xbox Series X when it launches.
Its certainly positive that the next-gen machine will support Xbox One games. But its a huge shame that the original Xbox lineup is so empty. There are currently only 32 compatible games, and its missing some real classics.
The first Knights of the Old Republic is a glaring omission. As are Project Gotham Racing and MechAssault. Not to mention the hundreds of other great titles collectors still own.
Maximizing Your Xbox Library
Microsoft also has a subscription service, the $10 a month Xbox Game Pass, that’ll get you access to a rotating library of older games. New Xbox exclusives also launch on the service, so you’ll get Halo Infinite and other upcoming games the day they become available. The $15 Game Pass Ultimate option will also get you access to Xbox Cloud Gaming, EA Play games and the ability to play many titles on PC.
Unlike the PS5, you’ll have plenty of controller options no matter what generation of games you’re playing — the Series X and Series S controllers are compatible with Xbox One games, the Xbox One console itself and PCs. You can also use your Xbox One controllers on your Series X and Series S.

The Elder Scrolls : Skyrim
In 2016, Bethesda released The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim‘s Special Edition, which is essentially the same game as the original release, but with improved visuals and mod support. Since The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is playable on Xbox One through the Special Edition, one might think that there is no good reason to add the Xbox 360 version to the backward compatibility lineup. However, Xbox 360 players can’t transfer their saves to the Skyrim Special Edition, meaning anyone that wants to play their original saves will have to dig their 360 out of the closet to do so. Now that Microsoft owns the rights to Bethesda and The Elder Scrolls franchise, maybe the 360 version of Skyrim can finally join the backward compatibility lineup.

Microsoft has added over 70 Xbox 360 and original Xbox games to its backward compatibility program on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. It’s also enabled FPS Boost for 37 more titles and has begun rolling out the technology to Xbox Cloud Gaming.
The announcement was made during Microsoft’s Xbox 20th Anniversary Celebration show and continues the company’s commitment to preserving games that span Xbox’s 20-year history.
Xbox owners can now enjoy the entire Max Payne and F.E.A.R. franchises, along with the whole Skate franchise as Skate 2 has been added. More than 20 original Xbox titles are also playable, including Dead or Alive Ultimate, Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2, and the Otogi franchises.
If you own these games on disc or digitally, they’ll now be available to play, with the majority open to purchase through the Microsoft Store.
As we’ve seen with previous backward compatible titles, every game added will benefit from upgraded visuals and Auto HDR on displays that support it. Original Xbox games will benefit from a 4x resolution increase on Xbox Series X and Xbox One X, a 3x resolution increase on Xbox Series S, and a 2x resolution increase on Xbox One S and Xbox One.
For those who like to play Xbox games via the cloud, 34 titles will benefit from FPS Boost, including Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and The Evil Within 2.

A History Of Xbox At Your Fingertips
It does currently look like the Xbox Series X could be the most compatible next-gen console. Not only will the new Xbox be backwards-compatible with generations of Xbox games, but we also know this extends to Xbox One accessories.
However, we’re largely in the dark about Sony’s plans for backwards compatibility with the PS5. We know the PS5 will be able to play “almost all” of the best PS4 games at launch, but the company hasn’t revealed if backwards-compatibility will extend beyond that.
Sony hasn’t had a great history of backwards compatible to date. While early versions of the PlayStation 3 were able to play PS2 titles, the console was eventually able to play original PlayStation One titles purchased on the store. With the PlayStation 4 generation, Sony placed a big bet on PS Now to pick up some of the slack in terms of backwards-compatibility.
PlayStation Now allows for players to stream selected games from PS2, PS3 and PS4. Originally a streaming-only feature, PlayStation Now does offer some PS4 games as downloads, but those with poor internet speeds need not apply and even those with great connections will find that input lag can cause issues in more reaction-based games.
Meanwhile, the Xbox One currently supports 575 Xbox 360 titles and 41 original Xbox titles. It doesn’t cover the thousands of games in the Xbox back catalog but it looks like Microsoft is looking to fix that with the Xbox Series X.
Which Xbox Games Are Backwards Compatible On Xbox Series X
To put it simply: Any game that was playable on Xbox One is now playable on Xbox Series X and Series S. That includes last-gen Xbox One games as well as older Xbox 360 and original Xbox games that were already backwards compatible on Xbox One, with the exception of the handful that require Kinect. That means you can play older games like Red Dead Redemption, Portal 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: KOTOR II, Splinter Cell, and more on Microsoft’s newest console.
