Xbox One Backward Compatibility: The Digital Foundry Verdict
Since our first tests in July, it’s clear that Xbox One backward compatibility has come a long way. Many of the issues we noted in our original tests have been cleared up – with improved performance to several titles a welcome result of the feature’s extended beta period. It’s nice to see the list of games growing and we can only hope that the few titles which do exhibit issues can be cleaned up further.
List Of Xbox Games Compatible With Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 gaming console has received updates from Microsoft from its launch in 2005 until November 2007 that enable it to play select games from its predecessor, Xbox. The Xbox 360 launched with backward compatibility with the number of supported Xbox games varying depending on region. Microsoft continued to update the list of Xbox games that were compatible with Xbox 360 until November 2007 when the list was finalized. Microsoft later launched the Xbox Originals program on December 7, 2007 where select backward compatible Xbox games could be purchased digitally on Xbox 360 consoles with the program ending less than two years later in June 2009. The following is a list of all backward compatible games on Xbox 360 under this functionality.
Can I Carry On With My Previous Xbox 360 Game Saves On Xbox One Or Xbox Series X/s
If you originally set your Xbox 360 to save games to the cloud you will be able to download the save files to the Xbox One version and carry on. The cloud files are permanently associated with your gamertag so the Xbox One should do this automatically.
If you only saved your in-game progress locally, to the hard drive, you will need to restart your Xbox 360 and save them to the cloud instead. If you no longer have your Xbox 360, sadly you won’t be able to access the files.
Considering the first-gen Xbox didn’t save games to the cloud in the same way, you can’t carry on with old save games.

Xbox One Backwards Compatibility: How Well Do Xbox 360 Games Run On Xbox One
The experience varies from game to game. According to Digital Foundry’s report, all titles receive some baseline improvements – such as the elimination of screen tear “completely on every title” – through to any disc access operations tending to “have less of an impact on performance”, meaning Mass Effect’s elevator load times and Fallout 3’s hitches are reduced.
However, while less demanding games such as Braid and N+ perform flawlessly, the more CPU-heavy titles do struggle, with Halo: Reach and Gears of War: Judgement singled out as games that suffer in the emulation process.

Red Dead Redemption/undead Nightmare
Status: Significantly improved on Xbox One
As ever, Red Dead Redemption runs with a 30fps cap on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and never goes above that line. But just like the Grand Theft Auto games, the Xbox 360 original struggles to maintain 30fps around busy towns with lots of NPCs, and character close-ups in cut-scenes. At its worst, the game hard-locks to 20fps at these points a flat line that adds a perceptible judder to any camera movement. Screen tearing was also an issue on Xbox 360 too, though well hidden at the top of the screen, but the real distraction was its frame-rate drops.
Back-compat support on Xbox One changes all of this, with improved frame-rates and the outright removal of screen-tear. Inevitably there’s a dynamic time of day in place that makes precise 1:1 visual comparisons difficult, but we’re getting the same native 1280×720 resolution here – in our shots upscaled to 1920×1080. Image quality is nearly identical, barring a slight halo effect to high-contrast details on Xbox One – an issue we’ve seen in many Xbox 360 titles running on Microsoft’s newer machine.
Elsewhere, there are no concerns with Xbox One’s accuracy in replicating the last-gen look we get same textures, lighting effects, texture filtering, and draw distances as before. All of this means the core advantage to playing via back-compat is the performance.
Launch With The Original Xbox
As Microsoft developed the original Xbox console, online gaming was designated as one of the key pillars for the greater Xbox strategy. Sega had made an attempt to capitalize on the ever-growing online gaming scene when it launched the Dreamcast video game console in 1999, including online support as standard, with the SegaNet service in North America and Dreamarena in Europe. Nevertheless, due to lack of widespread broadband adoption at the time, the Dreamcast shipped with only a dial-up modem while a later-released broadband adapter was neither widely supported nor widely available. was available, though limited in size due to the narrowband connection and the size limitations of a memory card. The PlayStation 2 did not initially ship with built-in networking capabilities.
The packaging for playable Xbox Live titles on the original Xbox console featured a trademark lumiscient orange-gold bar underneath the Xbox header. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and Brute Force sported a Live “bubble” design, as they only featured downloadable content. It was changed later, wherein all Xbox Live titles included the universal orange-gold Live bar. By the time of the Xbox 360, all titles were required to provide at least a limited form of Xbox Live “awareness”. In July 2004, Xbox Live had reached 1 million online users. In July 2005, Xbox Live had reached 2 million online users.

Is The Xbox 360 The Best Games Console Of All Time Ever
Running rings around the competition
It had a production run of more than ten years and in that time it became one of the top ten highest selling consoles of all time.

This year’s show will celebrate a milestone in gaming history, the release of Computer Space, the world’s first commercial arcade machine in November 1971. And we’ll be looking for your votes on the best console of all time will the Xbox 360 make the cut?
Its safe to say that the Xbox 360 is one of the brightest stars in Microsofts sky. Not least because its outlined by a big red ring of death.
Though the red ring of death nightmare will no doubt always cast a shadow over the Xbox 360s historical reputation its an incredibly important console both for Microsoft and the wider gaming world.
In the era where online gaming was beginning to flourish, the 360 was at the forefront, pushing it mass market with an excellently redesigned Xbox Live infrastructure. In addition, its introduction of Achievement Points and Gamerscores added a new competitive dimension to games that helped players extract as much as possible from their games.
Which Xbox Games Are Backward Compatible With Xbox Series X And S
When it comes to Xbox One backward compatibility, Xbox Head Phil Spencer confirmed in July on Xbox Wire,“Itâs our intent for all Xbox One games that do not require Kinect to play on Xbox Series X at the launch of the console.” That means the vast majority of your titles will carry over, with the exception of some Xbox Game Studios published games like Kinect Sports Rivals.
As for Xbox and Xbox 360 games, the list of backward compatible titles does get a little more restrictive, though over 600 games are still available. Microsoft has a website dedicated to saying what Xbox and Xbox 360 games work on Xbox One, and these should all carry over to Xbox Series X. Check out the full list of titles to see how many Xbox games in your library are supported.

How Does Dlc Work
Games with bundled DLC should work properly. For example, Red Dead Redemption for Xbox 360 is available in three different editions: Red Dead Redemption , Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, and Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition. All three discs are compatible and work how youd expect them to. The Game of the Year edition disc comes with all the additional content, so it will just work in the game. The standard disc doesnt come with any additional content, but you can choose to purchase the DLC from the Xbox Store and it will be enabled in your game.
Thats how it should work for most games, in theory. In practice, we found that the Xbox One just downloaded the base version of Fable II when we inserted a Fable II: Game of the Year Edition disc. The system wanted us to purchase the DLC that should have been included with the game. The Xbox One cant seem to tell the difference between the base and game of the year versions of this particular game. The Xbox One may be confused about some other Game of the Year games and their DLC, toowere not sure if this problem is specific to this one game or not.
All in all, though, the system works pretty welland should have you playing your old Xbox 360 games in no time.
What Does Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Mean For Xbox Series X And S Backward Compatibility
Xbox Game Pass members essentially have many backward compatible games they can play right away when next-gen consoles launch. While some Xbox Series X launch games will be on Game Pass, the majority of its library is made up of Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One titles. It seems that almost every game on Xbox Game Pass should be supported by Xbox Series X and S, as Microsoft has not indicated otherwise.
The company has boasted in Xbox Wire posts that there will be hundreds of games for Xbox Game Pass subscribers to play on Xbox Series X and S day one even if they don’t purchase any actual games with the console. Backward compatibility will be hard to miss out on during the early days of the Xbox Series X, and Xbox Game Pass gives an easy way for over 15 million people to experience it if they get a next-gen Xbox console.
Xbox Series X and Series S will be released on November 10, 2020.

How To Install And Play An Xbox 360 Game On Your Xbox One
If you dont have a game you want to play yet, there are two ways to get one. First, you can acquire a physical copy of the game. This can be either a new copy or a used copy, so you may be able to find a good deal on a website like eBay or Amazon .
Used copies work well because the Xbox One doesnt actually play the game from the disc. The Xbox One just needs to check the disc and verify what it is. The actual game is downloaded from Microsofts servers and run from your Xbox Ones hard drive. As long as the Xbox One can recognize the disc, youre fine.
Once you have the disc, insert it into your Xbox One. The Xbox One will tell you it needs to download an update for the game. Its really downloading the entire ported version of the game.
When its done, you just have to launch the game like you would any other. The Xbox One will need the games disc in its disc drive while you play it to confirm you do indeed own the game, but the game will actually run from the Xbox Ones internal drive and not the disc.
You can also purchase digital copies of Xbox 360 games from Microsofts Xbox store. If you already own a digital copy of the game, youll find it available for installation on your Xbox One alongside any normal Xbox One games you have. Head to My Games and Apps > Ready to Install to see games and apps you can install.
