Microsoft has been more ambitious with backward compatibility. The $499 Xbox Series X and $299 Series S play original Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games. That’s four generations of games, stretching back to the first console’s 2001 launch.
But it doesn’t include literally everything. Microsoft has a comprehensive list of the games that play on its new consoles. And titles that require its defunctKinect motion sensor won’t work at all.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original Xbox on Nov. 15, the company added more than 70 games to its backward compatibility catalog. However, it noted that this would be the last batch of old games it would make playable on its new consoles.
Old games get a visual boost on the Series X and Series S, by way of high dynamic range graphics. The new consoles’ hardware may also reduce game loading times and increase frame rates. It also offers the Quick Resume feature.
It also made several Xbox and Xbox 360 games available via Xbox Cloud Gaming, which means Xbox Game Pass subscribers can play them on an Android device.
Your Xbox 360 is largely irrelevant thanks to the Series X’s ability to play old games.

Xbox Series X will be backwards compatible with ‘thousands’ of games when it launches this holiday season, with upgraded graphics for many titles.
Backwards compatibile games on Xbox Series X will support ‘Quick Resume’ for significant reductions in load times, and use the full power of the CPU, GPU and SSD of the next generation console to improve performance of older titles. Some games from the Xbox 360 and original Xbox library will automatically receive HDR graphic upgrades, and select titles will have framerates doubled from their original release.
Microsoft has committed to allowing gamers to ‘preserve their gaming legacies’ by letting them pick up where they left off in thousands of games on previous consoles, including the Xbox 360 and original Xbox.
“As gamers, we also know how important it is to preserve and respect our gaming legacies,” writes Xbox Series X director of programming Jason Ronald. “Your favorite games and franchises, your progression and achievements, and the friendships and communities you create through gaming should all move with you across generations. Xbox Series X Gets 70+ Original Xbox And 360 Classics For Its 20th Anniversary

Xboxâs biggest advantage over PlayStation is its outstanding backward compatibility. Being able to play titles from older systems is a valuable feature to hardcore gamers. While the PS5 is only backward compatible with the PS4, the Xbox Series X and S can play games from every Xbox console. And to celebrate Xboxâs twentieth anniversary, that service is expanding.
What happened â As part of the Xbox anniversary livestream on November 15, 2021, Microsoft revealed that 76 new games, including every game from the Max Payne and F.E.A.R series, are coming to the Xbox Backward Compatibility Program today. Players will be able to access the games both digitally and physically. On Xbox Series X and S, many of these titles will receive further enhancements.
All games will get Auto HDR and an improved resolution to make them look better. Quick Resume will save your place in the game, even if you close the app, take out the disc, or unplug the system. 11 of these games will also support the FPS Boost feature that lets players increase a gameâs frame rate.

In total, there were 38 original Xbox games, 471 Xbox 360 games, and 3,914 Xbox One games supported on Xbox Series X and S before today.

In a blog post penned by Xbox boss Phil Spencer, he states that the Xbox Series X will encompass four generations of gaming. The post explains that all currently backwards compatible titles from the original Xbox and the Xbox 360 will be brought forward to the Xbox Series X, while Microsoft is still compiling the list of Xbox One games that will be backwards compatible on day one.

Microsoft has not announced any new additions to the Xbox and Xbox 360 backwards compatibility libraries for Xbox One for some time, saying at E3 2019 that the focus was shifting towards backwards compatibility for what we now know is the Xbox Series X. As it stands, the backward compatible library on Xbox One encompasses over 600 games, all of which will work on the Series X.

Due To Licensing Legal And Technical Constraints
Xbox just added 70+ games to its backward compatibility program. But this massive drop will be the last set of games added as Xbox announced licensing and legal constraints means it can no longer add games to backward compatibility.
Tucked away in the officialXbox Wire post announcing the latest drop of backward compatible and enhanced games, Xbox writes, While we continue to stay focused on preserving and enhancing the art form of games, we have reached the limit of our ability to bring new games to the catalog from the past due to licensing, legal and technical constraints. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.
IGN confirmed with Xbox that this is the final addition to the backward compatible catalog and that no new titles should be expected going forward.
In a statement by a Microsoft spokesperson the company says, “Yes, this is the final addition of Xbox 360 and original Xbox games to the backward compatibility program. We have reached the limits of our ability to add additional games to the catalog due to licensing, legal or technical constraints. We knowweve said this before, but we wentbackone more time to bring as many fan-requested titles as possible to the catalog to celebrate our 20th anniversary.

Xbox May Be Getting More Backward Compatible Games Soon
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S may be getting more backward compatible games soon. It’s been a while since Microsoft expanded the backward compatibility library with new Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. That said, earlier this month, we reported on new evidence that Microsoft was preparing to add to the aforementioned library of nostalgic games. A couple weeks later, more evidence has surfaced, and it’s even more compelling them the first set of evidence.
As noted on Reddit, The First Templar, a not very good Xbox 360 game from 2011, showed up on the Xbox Store this week saying it’s compatible with the Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. If you’re familiar with the Xbox backward compatibility library, you’ll know this game isn’t a part of it.
Adding to the situation is the fact that the listing has since been yanked, suggesting it went live early and wasn’t meant to be seen yet. Its listing could be nothing more than error, but while this is a possibility, it’s an unlikely one. It’s also possible that, for some strange reason, this very lackluster game is being re-released and thus the listing is not indicative of an expansion to the Xbox backward compatibility library. But again, while this is a possibility, it’s not a likely one.

Using An Xbox One With External Drive Easy Mode
Already own an Xbox One with an external drive? Turn off your old console, disconnect the drive, and plug it into the new console. Provided you are using the same Gamertag your Series X or S will recognize the hard drive and any games installed on it.
Youll need to re-download any games that were stored on your last consoles internal drive, or manually copy them across using the Storage section under Settings > System.

Xbox Series X is still expected this year, and it could make your Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games much better than you remember them – with framerates of up to 120FPS and new HDR implementation.
While PlayStation 5 backwards compatibility is limited to PlayStation 4 titles , Microsoft is touting the Xbox Series X as the “most compatible console ever”.
In a new blog post, director of program management for Xbox Series X Jason Ronald explains the addition of HDR to games potentially twenty years old.
In partnership with the Xbox Advanced Technology Group, Xbox Series X delivers a new, innovative HDR reconstruction technique which enables the platform to automatically add HDR support to games,
This is achieved at a platform level, so devs won’t need to go back to old games. Presumably, this will be an opt-in service for them.
On the potential for vastly improved framerates, Ronald explains that the compatibility team has invented brand new techniques that enable even more titles to run at higher resolutions and image quality while still respecting the artistic intent and vision of the original creators.”
We are also creating whole new classes of innovations including the ability to double the frame rate of a select set of titles from 30fps to 60fps or 60fps to 120fps.

So What Games Are Being Added To The List
If you own these games, then you might want to go and dust them off. For starters, theres TimeSplitters, the entire Max Payne series, Gladius, the entire Gears of War series, Binary Domain, Nier, Red Dead Revolver, the entire F.E.A.R franchise, Dragon Age, Fallout New Vegas, and plenty more.
If youre a big fan of the older titles, then the list is growing. There are currently over 500 past titles that you can play on the Xbox Series X/S systems, which is great. For years, its been a struggle to play older titles on new hardware, and that always frustrated players.
Custom Processor Is Key
According to Ronald, the same team that brought backwards-compatibility to the Xbox One are doing the same for Xbox Series X.
Technical aspects have made this job for the Xbox Series X somewhat more challenging, but the next-gen console’s custom processor has been specially designed to combat this issue and allow us to enjoy titles from all Xbox generations seamlessly.
“Maintaining compatibility presents a massive technical challenge as fundamental system and chip architectures advance across generations,” Ronald explains. “Developers highly optimize their games to the unique capabilities and performance of a console to provide the best experience for their players. To make the Xbox Series X our most compatible console ever required both significant innovation in the design of the custom processor as well as the unique design of the Xbox operating system and hypervisor at the heart of our next-generation platform.”
Ronald also revealed that the Xbox team has logged more than 100,000 hours of Xbox Series X play testing, with members of the team now using the Xbox Series X as their primary console.
“By the time we launch this holiday, the team will have spent well over 200,000 hours ensuring your game library is ready for you to jump in immediately,” Ronald states.

Most Old Accessories Work Too
Except for the Kinect, officially licensed Xbox One accessories will work fine with the Xbox Series X. This includes controllers, which can be used to play everything from classic Xbox titles to the latest Series X and S releases.
Some optical headsets may require firmware updates to work with the new console, and if the manufacturer doesnt provide those updates then these wont work on the latest hardware. Microsoft has launched the Designed for Xbox program to make buying accessories easier in the future.
The list of compatible accessories includes Microsofts excellent Adaptive Controller for gamers with physical disabilities, smartphone adapters like the Razer Kishi and MOGA XP5-X Plus, and the all-metal $180 Elite Series 2 wireless controller.
Xbox Series X: Handset Will Be Backwards Compatible Since Launch
One of the cards in Microsofts sleeve for this generation was backward compatibility, a peculiarity that makes it possible to play games from past generations. According to Phill Spencer, the Xbox Series X will also have the same functionality on the first day of launch.
It is worth mentioning that backward compatibility was already affirmed, but there was no confirmation as to whether it would be an option that would appear eventually, or an option right on day one. With this feature, it will be possible to play games from 3 generations of Microsoft consoles.
We wanted to make sure that I was there on the first day, that we could deliver on the promise of compatibility, so Ive been playing some 360 and One games on my new device. Phill Spencer told the GameSpot portal.
The companys director of program management, Jason Ronald, also said: We want these games to go on with you, but we want the services to go on with you too. We want your legacy in video games to go with you, whether its your gamerscore, friends list, achievements, saves, all of this must advance so that there are no barriers when you think about moving forward .
Xbox Series X was officially announced at the 2019 Game Awards, along with the beautiful Hellblade II ad trailer. There is no official date for the launch, but the forecast is for the end of 2020.

Xbox One Backwards Compatibility: How Well Do Xbox 360 Games Run On Xbox One
The experience varies from game to game. According to Digital Foundry’s report, all titles receive some baseline improvements – such as the elimination of screen tear “completely on every title” – through to any disc access operations tending to “have less of an impact on performance”, meaning Mass Effect’s elevator load times and Fallout 3’s hitches are reduced.
However, while less demanding games such as Braid and N+ perform flawlessly, the more CPU-heavy titles do struggle, with Halo: Reach and Gears of War: Judgement singled out as games that suffer in the emulation process.
In terms of features, Xbox 360 backwards compatibility on Xbox One supports:
- Digital and disc-based games at no additional cost
- Support for existing saves , DLC, Achievement progress, and the original dashboard
- Multiplayer between those playing on Xbox 360 and Xbox One
- Select Xbox One system features, including Game DVR, Windows 10 streaming and screenshots
Many Xbox 360 games are also currently available on Microsoft’s Netflix-style Xbox Game Pass subscription service.
Which Xbox Games Are Backwards Compatible On Xbox Series X
To put it simply: Any game that was playable on Xbox One is now playable on Xbox Series X and Series S. That includes last-gen Xbox One games as well as older Xbox 360 and original Xbox games that were already backwards compatible on Xbox One, with the exception of the handful that require Kinect. That means you can play older games like Red Dead Redemption, Portal 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: KOTOR II, Splinter Cell, and more on Microsoft’s newest console.
