Rumours circled for months that Microsoft was working on a cheaper Xbox to launch alongside the Series X. Sure enough, the Xbox Series S is a digital-only version of its next-gen console in order to lower the barrier to entry.
It costs £249.99 . That’s just over half the price of the full-fat Xbox Series X and could be a very tempting price for UK gamers.
Gamers in 12 countries, including the US, UK and Australia, also have the option to buy the Series S and pay in instalments. Microsoft’s Xbox All Access service gets you Series S console plus Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Live Gold in return for £20.99 per month over a 24 month period.
The main difference between the Xbox Series X and Series S is that the latter doesn’t have a disc drive. Another big difference is that while both consoles support high frame rates of up to 120fps, the Xbox Series X offers native 4K gaming, while the Series S is geared more towards 1440p. If you want to make the most of your 4K TV, the Series X would be the obvious choice, but those with gaming monitors might be perfectly well served by the Series S.
The Series S isn’t as powerful, though. Both consoles have the same Zen 2-based CPU but the Xbox Series X runs at 3.8Hz, while the Series S runs at 3.4Hz. And where the Xbox Series S has 10GB of GDDR6 memory running at 224Gbps, the Series X offers 16GB of GDDR6.

It’ll still comfortably run all upcoming Xbox games but it won’t run games natively at 4K, doesn’t feature a disc drive and has a smaller 512GB NVMe SSD. However, you’ll get support for 1440p at 120FPS and 4K upscaling, as well as the same raytracing and variable refresh rate features as with the Series X.
If you’re willing to sacrifice those additional features, you do save a considerable chunk of change on the console. Definitely worth it if you aren’t playing on a 4K TV or aren’t too fussed about all the extra performance benefits. Xbox Series X restocks have slowed considerably in recent weeks, and we’re now into the final countdown for those keen to pick up a console before the holidays. While no retailers have let any restock rumors slip at time of writing, there’s always the possibility of stumbling across more Xbox Series X stock. We’d recommend keeping your search alive between 1pm ET and 6pm ET and staying in touch with retailers and trackers on social media.
We certainly hope some more Xbox Series X restocks are on the way over the next week, anyway – it’s actually harder to find a Series X right now than it is a PS5 restock . With that in mind, we’ve put together all the advice we can on where to buy Xbox Series X… or how to give yourself the best odds of success, at least.
In general, though, we wouldn’t expect Xbox Series X restock woes to end any time soon. With Microsoft itself announcing that shortages will likely continue well into 2022, it doesn’t look like these supply issues will let up any time soon.

Xbox Series X Stock Update: Where To Find The New Xbox
Getting hold of an Xbox Series X is tricky right now, with stock incredibly scarce due to the ongoing chip shortage . Even to try and find one.
The latest news? The Series X remains incredibly hard to find, especially in the US Walmart did restock on 13th December, followed by Target on the 16th, but both immediately sold out. In the UK you can buy one from Currys, but only as part of the Ultimate Bundle this includes a Seagate 1TB expansion hard drive and 3 Month Game Pass membership, and costs £679. Box also has it in stock, but again only as part of a bundle. Or you can pick one up at 4Gadgets as part of Xbox All Access, which includes 24 months of Game Pass Ultimate and charges £28.99 a month.

Walmart and Amazon are expected to have Xbox Series X restocks again before the end of next week, but that’s the closest we’re going to get to anything concrete. Expect notifications for a surprise restock before something announced happens.Here are some quick tips for catching a surprise Xbox restock:
- Timing: Unannounced restocks typically happen after 10 a.m. PT unless they come from Target, which tends to drop them before 6 a.m. PT .
- Walmart, GameStop and Best Buy have membership subscriptions that frequently offer early access to restocks, but they’re not always required. Even if you don’t pay for early access, you should still create an account with these retailers for faster checkout.
- Install the app for your preferred retailer, which is often faster to use than the websites, but it’s better to use both.

Tips For Buying An Xbox Series X
Keep checking online with all of the popular authorized Xbox sellers. For retail store chains, talk to a store manager to determine what time new inventory typically arrives at that store and is made available to customers. Once you know this, make a point to call or show up and be the first in line to grab the new inventory.
To avoid getting scammed, refrain from ordering a new XBox from a random seller on eBay.com, for example, unless you know that seller is reputable. And stay away from anyone on social media claiming to be able to get you a new Xbox Series X immediately and hassle-free. If someone is offering you a fast track to a gaming console thats sold out everywhere elseand is offering it at its original retail priceits almost guaranteed to be a scam.
If youre going the local online marketplace route, such as Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp or Craigslist, confirm that what youre buying is authentic, sealed and comes with a receipt if the seller claims its new. Be sure to test the console to make sure its working in all other instances. And if you must meet up with a seller in person, do so at a well-lit and public meeting place with plenty of foot traffic. Youll find that many police stations happily offer their lobbies specifically for transactions like this, and thatll often be your safest option.
