Xbox Series X Vs Xbox Series S Verdict
Microsoft may be onto something here. By offering two consoles that target different audiences, consumers ultimately have more choice and more ways to enter into the Xbox ecosystem. If only the best will do, pick up an Xbox Series X, but be prepared to pay a premium. Want to enter the next generation without breaking the bank? The Xbox Series S is a fantastic entry point, and one with a seriously tempting price.
Microsoft seems to have created two appealing iterations of its console, without one appearing less attractive than the other. Crucially, it will now be able to fight the PS5 on two fronts: price and performance. The Xbox Series S costs significantly less than the PS5, and while the Xbox Series X may cost the same as the PS5, it’s more powerful… at least, on paper.
By creating an argument for Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S, Microsoft has essentially done its best to turn consumers heads where it might not have done so were it a straight fight between Xbox Series X and PS5. And thats surely a win for Xbox as a whole.

How Do You Identify Which Version Of Xbox You Have
When the Xbox One first dropped onto the games console scene back in 2013 there was only a single version. Therefore, it was very easy to choose which model to buy. However, now there are a number of choices. So, how do you identify which version of Xbox you have?
With the Xbox Series X being released early next month, many people will be looking to sell their old consoles. Perhaps even purchase a second-hand Xbox One at a discounted price. If you are looking at either of these options, youll want to identify which Xbox version you have and the value of it.
Microsofts Two New Consoles
This week, Microsoft released its two new Xbox consoles. Theres the $499 Xbox Series X, and a cheaper $299 Xbox Series S. You can read our reviews of both of them by following the links below.
Its not unusual for console manufacturers to offer a couple of different hardware options at launch, but normally, the differences are minor. The PS3, for example, was initially available in two models. There was a version with a 60GB hard drive as well as a cheaper version with a smaller 20GB hard drive, no Wi-Fi support, and fewer ports. Meanwhile, Microsoft also originally sold a Core version of the Xbox 360 in 2005, which included compromises like including a wired rather than wireless controller and omitting a hard drive.
The differences between the Xbox Series S and Series X are more substantial and have a big impact on how games look. While Microsoft says the Series X is targeting running games at 60fps at a full 4K resolution, the Series S instead targets a lower 1440p resolution at 60fps. Its a big power disparity, similar to what we saw between the Xbox One and the Xbox One X, but this time, the two consoles were available on day one, rather than releasing years apart.
The Xbox Series X comes complete with a disc drive.Microsofts Series S is less powerful and digital-only.

Quick Resume Acts Like The Ultimate Pause Button
Using their fast storage access, the Xbox Series X and Series S allow you to suspend almost any game by creating a snapshot of it in system memory. You can then start another game, watch a movie, or even turn off and completely unplug your console. The next time you start the game in question, itll pick up exactly where you left off. Its a lot like switching between open apps on a smartphone, and you can do it with several games at once. Games already boot up faster on the new consoles because of their storage speed, and if youre playing more than one thing, switching between games using quick resume saves a lot of time and frustration because you skip any menus and save/load screens that you might otherwise be forced to navigate. And in the few months weve been using the console, every time we boot up a game for the first time in weeks only to load up exactly where we left off in seconds is a delightful experience.
Initially, Quick Resume support was somewhat spotty, with several games encountering problems with the feature but recent patches have improved overall stability, though there are still occasional, unavoidable issues. For titles like the 2018 remaster of Dark Souls, which uses an always online server system, Quick Resume just about always results in a server disconnect, which will boot you to the title screen .
Xbox Series X Restocks At Gamestop
GameStop tends to sell the Xbox Series X and S in the form of pricey bundles that include accessories like an extra controller or Game Pass. It most recently restocked the Xbox Series X and Series S in bundles in early October for PowerUp Rewards Pro members. GameStop also had the Halo Infinite-themed Xbox Series X on October 12 and October 14 .

New Games Old Hardware
Microsoft has said you wont have to buy new hardware to enjoy its upcoming first-party titles because many of them will also come to Xbox One. Heres how Xbox chief Phil Spencer described the companys approach back in July, where he said that every Xbox Game Studios game in the next couple of years will be playable on the Xbox One.
You wont be forced into the next generation. We want every Xbox player to play all the new games from Xbox Game Studios. Thats why Xbox Game Studios titles we release in the next couple of yearslike Halo Infinitewill be available and play great on Xbox Series X and Xbox One. We wont force you to upgrade to Xbox Series X at launch to play Xbox exclusives.
And if youre more of a PC gamer and dont own an Xbox One, then Microsoft also typically releases its major titles there as well, and it says it plans to continue this policy this year.
Microsoft has promised to bring Halo Infinite to PC and Xbox One as well as its new Xbox consoles.
There are some caveats you should be aware of. First is that these promises only cover Microsofts first-party titles, aka those published by Xbox Game Studios. Microsoft isnt making any promises about how other publishers like EA, Ubisoft, or Activision will handle their new games.

Xbox One Review: Controller
While the Elite controller is the best version of the Xbox One pad, this standard edition is still a brilliant little controller.
At first glance, the Xbox One’s controller looks like a dead-ringer for its predecessor. Dual thumbsticks, face buttons, shoulder bumpers, D-pad and twin triggers are all where you’d expect to find them. But pick it up and play with it and the improvements become apparent.
The triggers feel smooter, the D-pad and shoulder buttons feel more responsive and the twin-sticks meld snugly to the player’s thumbs. The pad overall feels more molded to the player’s hands and the smooth surface is svelte to the touch. Instead of a Start and Select button, you have an Apps and Menu button, but they serve the same purposes in-game.
The most notable improvement are the rumble-filters beneath the controller’s casing that give players a sense of immersion the Xbox 360 didn’t have physically.
Much has been made of the control pad’s re-design, but believe the hype this controller is a marked improvement on its predecessor. It’s build quality still feels a little plasticky, but it’s analog sticks are of a high quality when compared to easily frayed sticks on the PS4’s DualShock 4.

What Is Xbox All Access
Once you do find a new Xbox in stock, you dont necessarily have to pay for it all up front. Both the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are part of the Xbox All Access program, which allows you to lease a console complete with Xbox Game Pass by making small monthly payments.
Xbox All Access starts at $24.99 a month for 24 months for the Xbox Series S, and costs $34.99 a month for 24 months for the Xbox Series X. Both memberships include 24 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate , which gets you access to hundreds of Xbox games including the Halo, Gears, Forza and Elder Scrolls franchises. When you factor in Game Pass, both of these monthly plans add up to roughly the same amount as buying everything up front, so All Access is worth considering if you dont want to dish out a few hundred bucks all at once.

New Games New Hardware
New hardware needs new games to make the most of it, and Microsoft and its partners have announced a host of games that are coming to its new console. The biggest of these is Halo: Infinite, the latest entry in the long-running sci-fi first-person shooter franchise thats become synonymous with the Xbox brand since its debut way back in 2001.
Unfortunately, Microsoft recently delayed Halo: Infinite, meaning it will now release in 2021, rather than arriving alongside the new console. News of the delay, which Microsoft attributed in part to the pandemic, came after the games visuals were met with criticism after their initial unveiling, prompting developer 343 Industries to admit, We do have work to do to address some of these areas and raise the level of fidelity and overall presentation for the final game.
With other Xbox staples like Fable and Forza Motorsport without release dates, the delay has left third-party publishers to fill in the rest of the launch lineup, including Assassins Creed Valhalla, Dirt 5, Watch Dogs Legion, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Heres a guide to the best launch day games, and heres what the months ahead are looking like in terms of new releases.

Xbox One Review: Games
Cuphead has technically appeared on Nintendo Switch as well, but we’re still counting it as an Xbox One exclusive.
At launch, Xbox One didn’t have the best selection of games, but in the years that have followed some real crackers – both exclusive and multiplatform – have hit the console, bolstering its ever-expanding library.
Halo 5: Guardians is easily one of the best and a must for new adopters. Integrating one of the best single-player campaigns into the series’ most robust multiplayer offering, Halo 5 is a shooter fan’s dream land. And with no certainty that Halo Infinite will launch on Xbox One in 2020 , Halo 5 remains your one-stop shop for spartan battles on Switch.
Xbox One supports all the usual iterative sports simulators, including FIFA 19, Madden 19, NBA 2K19, NHL 19 and more. For shooter fans outside of Halo, Xbox One has Overwatch, Paladins, Fortnite, PUBG and all the recent Call of Duties and Battlefields. It’s not exactly short on multi-platform games.
Fortnite is free-to-play and is full of fun and enjoyable modes to enjoy alongside the usual battle royale matches.
On the exclusives front, Xbox One doesn’t have quite the firepower of PS4, but it does have plenty of memorable games such as Cuphead, Forza Horizon 4, Gears of War 4 and more. There’s plenty more on the horizon, and you can play most if not all of them with a Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

Do You Have A Big Library Of Xbox One Games On Disc Or Have You Been Purchasing Games Digitally For The Past Decade
The vast majority of my games for the Xbox One were purchased digitally. Its easy for me to play these games on either new Xbox console. I just open my Games Library, find my old purchases, install them, and Im all set. I can even download my old save files from cloud storage for free via Xbox Live. Microsoft has done an exceptional job with backward compatibility.
That said, if most of your existing Xbox games are on discs, you will need an Xbox Series X and its disc drive to play them. Theres currently no way to trade a hard copy of an Xbox One game for a digital copy on the Series S. We have no reason to think that will change. However! If you plan to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass, you may find that much of your old collection is available through the service. You can find an up-to-date list of Game Pass games on Microsofts official website. Just remember that third-party games regularly rotate in and out of the library.
