Controllers And Peripherals: New Feedback Vs Backwards Compatibility

PS5 vs Xbox Series X: Which Does What Best?
  • Xbox Series X controller is a slight update of the Xbox One controller.

  • You can use Xbox One controllers with the Xbox Series X.

  • The Xbox Series X controller will be compatible with Xbox One and PC right out of the box.

  • Still no plans from Microsoft to support VR on their consoles.

Sony and Microsoft will both debut new controllers to go along with their new consoles, but Sony is definitely going harder in this department. The controller for the PS5 is noticeably different from it’s predecessor with a curvy, almost boomerang-like design that looks slightly reminiscent of the PS3 prototype controller. The DualSense controller includes the same touchpad and share buttons that were present on the DualShock 3 controller but brings a handful of refinements, including a built-in mic with a dedicated mute button, as well as adaptive trigger tension that is intended to work with the haptic feedback in the DualSense controller for a more immersive experience.

The new DualSense controller is said to replace basic rumble functionality with advanced haptics designed to simulate the feel of touching and interacting with things in the game world. The differences are so great, in fact, that you won’t be able to play games on your PS5 with PS4 controllers.

Specifications: Slight Edge To Microsoft

  • CPU: 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.5GHz.

  • GPU: 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz.

  • Memory: 16GB GDDR6/256-bit.

  • Storage: Custom 825GB SSD + NVMe SSD slot.

  • CPU: 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.8GHz.

  • GPU: 12 TFLOPs, 52 CUs at 1.825GHz

  • Memory: 16GB GDDR6/256-bit.

  • Storage: 1TB Custom NVMe SSD + 1TB expansion card.

The raw specifications of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X are extremely close all the way down the line, with both consoles featuring similar CPUs, GPUs, memory, storage, and more. Microsoft gets the slight edge in terms of raw numbers, but both consoles are likely to provide similar performance in the real world.

The Xbox Series X has a slightly faster CPU, and its GPU is capable of more teraflops than the PS5. However, the clock speed of the Xbox Series X is slower than the PS5, which is backstopped by just 36 compute units versus the 52 CU found in the Series X GPU.

In plain terms, the PS5 has a faster, more efficient GPU, but the Xbox Series X is more powerful. This is most likely to make a difference in GPU-intensive tasks like ray tracing, although we won’t know how much of a difference until we can make side by side comparisons.

The most notable difference between these consoles is their size and form factor, with the footprint for the PS5 being markedly larger than either version of the Xbox, and the asymmetrical, two-tone aesthetic that may be a turn-off for some.

Ps5 Digital Vs Xbox Series S Specs

Both the PS5 Digital and the Xbox Series S have an eight-core AMD CPU. The PS5s CPU runs at a variable 3.5GHz frequency, while the Series Ss CPU runs at a 3.6GHz frequency. This is the only spec that Xbox Series S has a slight advantage in, but it is incredibly slight.

In the rest of the spec battle, the PS5 Digital wins everything. Both consoles have the same GPU, but the PS5 has a whopping 10 TFLOPS of processing power compared to the Series Ss 4 TFLOPS. The PS5 Digital also has 6 more GB of GDDR6 RAM. Its understandable that the PS5 Digital would win because its essentially the standard PS5 minus a disc drive.

If we look at the Xbox Series S, it has less powerful specs, but its also $200 cheaper than the Series X. Microsoft didnt just eliminate the disc drive to give a more affordable, digital-only option to gamers. The company wanted to provide a budget option for gamers who want to spend less or dont need a super powerful next-gen console.

And for now, there arent many games where you can really appreciate the difference. Until more truly demanding next-gen Xbox Series X games are released later this year, the Series S performs nearly as well as the Series X. For a budget device, the Series S performance is pretty dang impressive.

Xbox Series X Vs Playstation : Price And Availability In 2021

Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X retail for $499 in the U.S., albeit with a cheaper PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in production, which cuts the price to $399. Budding Xbox owners wanting to save on next-generation gaming will need to consider Xbox Series S, which delivers much of the same but targeting HD TVs over 4K resolution. But the biggest challenge right now is their availability, with limited stock dominating the conversation around these devices.

The new Xbox and PlayStation consoles are hard to find in early 2021, with limited supply and record demand fostering a challenging landscape for buyers. Recent restocks continue to sell out in seconds, with a thriving resell market valuing the consoles with high price markups. That’s expected to continue throughout the year, only worsened by current world events.

Xbox Series X

Xbox Series X is Microsoft’s new flagship, as its most powerful console with over 12TF GPU performance and a custom SSD. It boasts up to 4K resolution and 120 FPS, full backward compatibility across four generations, and ray-tracing support.

Sony and Microsoft are ready to bring the console wars into the next generation with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. It’s far too early to declare a victor, but we’ll take a look at specifications, games, controllers, pricing, and more to see how things really stack up in the battle of PS5 vs. Xbox Series X.

While your decision is largely going to be based on which consoles you’ve adopted in the past, it’s important to weigh your options. Beyond the obvious aesthetic differences between these consoles, there are some considerable differences in terms of not just the hardware being used, but their capabilities and features as well. We’ve broken both consoles down into a handful of categories, with a clear winner for each category as well as on overall.

Ps5 Vs Xbox Series X User Interface How Do They Feel To Use

The PS5 interface feels like a natural evolution of what came before it. The tile-based system remains, but has been enhanced with a new feature known as the Command Centre. This encapsulates your friends list, audio settings, profile and more, into a single convenient strip of icons that you can customise to your liking. It feels wonderful to use, and will likely only grow in cohesiveness with future firmware updates.

Sadly, some other new changes make things more cumbersome than they should be. Trophies are now presented as large icons instead of a horizontal list, making it more difficult to check their definition and see how many youve earned at-a-glance like before. Cloud saves are also buried in the settings, and you cant simply download the ones you want from their relevant game icon as you could on the PS4. These feel like irksome steps backward, and Im confused as the reasons they were introduced at all.

On the flipside, the user interface for Xbox Series X is completely unchanged. If you werent a fan before, then you wont see anything here that will change your mind. I dont mind it too much, although oftentimes there are too many hoops to jump through simply to install games or change specific settings in the avalanche of menus.

Overall Winner Xbox Wireless Headset

In the past, Sony and Microsoft’s first-party headsets often trailed behind the competition. With the Pulse and Xbox Wireless headsets, the tech giants have raised the bar significantly. Not only have they released headsets with superb sound quality for less than $100 but they surpass most third-party headsets in the same price range.

However, Microsoft has gone the extra mile by including features that are usually found in more expensive headsets. It has Bluetooth and fully customizable features that the Ps5 Pulse simply doesn’t have. Yet, despite this, both are fantastic value and give the player exactly what they’d want for the price and that’s great audio. PS5 and Xbox owners can’t really go wrong with either one but for those who own both, it may be cheaper to buy a more expensive headset that’s compatible with the two consoles.

Ps5 Vs Xbox Series X: Price Comparison

Which Console is Better NOW? PS5 VS Xbox Series X

Lets start with the basics. The standard PS5 costs £449 , while the PS5 Digital Edition costs £359 . The Digital Edition console lacks a disc drive but is otherwise identical in every way to the standard PS5. Its straightforward stuff from Sony this time around.

Over in Microsofts camp, things are less clear cut. The Xbox Series X also costs £449 , but the Xbox Series S Microsofts digital edition comes in at £249 , making it the cheapest next-gen console you can buy.

That saving comes at a cost, however. As well explain below, the Xbox Series S is significantly less powerful than the Xbox Series X, and like the PS5 DE lacks a disc drive. Those looking for 4K gaming will have to purchase the more expensive model.

Its also worth pointing out that while the lack of a disc drive does keep the cost down in the short term, in the long run, you will pay more for digital games they tend to be more expensive than their physical counterparts. This isn’t as much an issue for the Series S, as Game Pass has a vast backlog of digital titles, and most first-party Xbox exclusives land on the service right from launch, but it’s still worth bearing in mind.

Winner Draw

2.4GB/sec 2.4GB/sec

Of course, speed isnt everything, and the Series X gains points for offering 1TB of storage space versus the PS5s 825GB especially since modern games can often use up over 100GB of space.

What Improvements Do The Next

120 Frame-Per-Second. This is the most noticeably felt step-up from the last generation that players will experience when they play Warzone on the next-gen consoles. And thanks to a recent update, both Xbox and PlayStation get access to this improvement. You just need to ensure you’re using an HDMI 2.1 and that you’re playing off a 120fps capable monitor. The output will be scaled down to 1080p on both consoles.

But in both cases, Warzone is still an old application native to last-gen, so possible advancements can only push the consoles so far. And for this reason, frame-rate is the only felt improvement between old or current-gen consoles. A Field-Of-View slider has been widely requested from the community, but everything we’ve heard so far suggests that the devs do not want this feature coming to consoles, irrespective of capability.

Like keeping up to speed with all things ? Here are some recent stories in case you missed them:

Processing And Graphics Hardware

Each of the new consoles is clearly and significantly more powerful than their predecessors, but by how much? And which is the most powerful full stop?

The Xbox Series X is “four times more powerful than Xbox One X”. It sports a custom Zen 2 eight-core processor running at 3.8GHz per core.

The PlayStation 5 runs on an eight-core Zen 2 processor too, but at 3.5GHz per core.

RAM inside both is similar: 16GB GDDR6.

They also both run RDNA 2 graphics. However, the Xbox Series X has a slight upper hand with its GPU having 12 TFLOPS of power across 52 CUs. In comparison, the PS5 has 10.3 TFLOPS of power across 36 CUs.

This effectively means that developers could potentially eke more from the Series X than PS5. But, in reality, both display excellent handling over games with ray tracing, full resolutions, even 60fps enabled.

Ps5 Vs Xbox Series X: Backwards Compatibility

Both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X have excellent backwards compatibility features, but theres no denying that the Xbox reaches further back into Microsofts library. Not only is the Xbox Series X compatible with just about every Xbox One game its also compatible with many Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. While it doesnt include every stab Microsofts ever taken at backwards-compatible games , its an impressive effort with zero friction.

The PS5 can play just about every PS4 game on the market, but compatibility doesnt go back any further than that, unless you count its PlayStation Now streaming service for PS3 games. Still, its not quite the same as playing games you already own directly on a console.

Should You Buy The Ps5 Or Xbox Series X

PS5 vs Xbox Series X: Which Is Better?

There’s no clear answer as to whether the PS5 or Xbox Series X is the better console, especially this early in their lifetimes. Counting each section winner above results in a tie score.

As a result, we would recommend the following:

  • Buy the PlayStation 5 if: You want to play PS5 exclusives, aren’t tempted by Game Pass, don’t have a library of older Xbox games, or are interested in VR.
  • Buy the Xbox Series X if: You want to use Game Pass, aren’t interested in the PS5’s exclusives, or are deeply integrated into the Xbox ecosystem.

If you don’t think either console is right for you at the moment, don’t forget about the excellent Nintendo Switch, either.

Does Warzone Play Better On The Playstation 5 Or The Xbox Series X/s

The Playstation 5’s backward compatibility will always be limited by the 5.5GB of usable memory that the PS4 Pros had, whereas the Xbox Series S/X can work with 9GB of usable RAM when playing older games. But while the Xbox Series X/S is capable of more, there’s no fundamental difference between them when playing Warzone. In fact, we advise PlayStation, so you can disable crossplay and thereby avoid a great majority of the cheating problem in Warzone. You probably won’t be able to avoid it entirely, but this will do a huge amount.

Ps5 Vs Xbox Series X: Which Is More Powerful

If were talking straight mathematics, the Xbox Series X has about 18% more processing power than the PlayStation 5. And yet, like all things technological, the actual answer is more complicated than that. If youd like to get down into the nitty gritty, read Samit Sarkars piece, which has more numbers than you can shake a stick at. In his summation, Sarkar reminds us that the numbers matter, but they arent the be-all and end-all. After all, the most powerful console in the world without any good games is just a very expensive paperweight.

If youre still focused on the numbers, you should know that the ultimate number gurus at Digital Foundry have tested the new hardware extensively. The initial consensus seems to be that the consoles are very close in power, and the PS5 will actually outperform the Xbox Series X in certain circumstances. In the DMC5 video, for example, the PS5 handles the games high framerate mode slightly better than the Xbox Series X does.
