On a more positive note, the Xbox Series S is back in stock at Newegg and is also available at Target at the time of writing.

Here’s the latest stock information from those retailers, plus , Best Buy Antonline, Costco and GameStop.

In Defense Of The Xbox Series S

To be fair, frequent Tomâs Guide readers may not know exactly where we stand on the Xbox Series S. In my initialXbox Series S review, I gave it four stars out of five, calling it a âcharming little gadget has a lot to offer.â

On the other hand, my colleague Rory Mellon published an op-ed in October entitled âPSA: Do not buy an Xbox Series S.â In it, he cited the systemâs less powerful specs, compared to the Xbox Series X, as well as the fact that certain games just donât run very well on it. The Series S could lose more and more parity with the Series X as developers start to get frustrated with the small white console.

This isnât an unreasonable argument in my own review, I noted that the Series S might not be entirely future-proof. However, in spite of a few performance hiccups, I donât think Microsoft will sunset the Series S anytime soon. The console is only a year old I imagine it will have at least another year or two before we start seeing significant, widespread performance disparities. And even then, the system will function just fine for backwards-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Thatâsroughly 3,000 titles right there.

In short, in an apples-to-apples comparison, the Xbox Series X is a better console. But having used the Series S for a year, Iâve found a lot to like about it. I donât think it would make a bad holiday gift, particularly for someone who doesnât own an Xbox One.

Xbox Series X Tracker:

Retailers supply the PS5 and Xbox Series X on a regular basis. The trick is to figure out when they happen and place an order before supplies run out. Thankfully, a social media community has arisen dedicated to tracking restocks and advising customers about sales 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

These accounts, especially those on Twitter, might be very valuable in deciding when a PS5 or Xbox Series X refill is going to begin, whether its in a few days, hours, or right now.

How To Check If The Xbox Series S Is Restocked

Fans can check to see if the Xbox Series S is restocked through several methods. The most reliable, of course, is to simply check the listing for the console on the preferred retailerâTarget, Best Buy, and so on. Additionally, while uncommon, retailers will occasionally announce restocks through their own official channels.

Barring that, however, there are quite a few reliable accounts on social media dedicated to tracking console restocks. One of these is the Twitter account. Other individuals, such as fellow New York City journalist Matt Swinder have taken the onus of keeping tabs on restocks upon himself.

We recommend finding a source that you trust and/or a platform that works best for you and keeping those notifications turned on.

What Are The Hardware Specs On The Xbox Series S

PS5 and Xbox Series X restock news giveaway

The Series S isnt just the Series X without a disc drive. In fact, the Series S makes some big compromises on its internal components and is a significantly weaker system. When compared to the Series X, the Series S has:

  • Less RAM
  • Smaller SSD
  • Slower CPU
  • Weaker GPU
  • Outputs at 1440p instead of 4K
  • No disc drive

In reality, the differences shouldnt be too noticeable. Because games will be running at 1440p instead of 4K on the Series S, you wont need as much power to keep a solid framerate. There might be a bit of slowdown during loading screens or intense action sequences, but until people have more experience comparing them its hard to say how they will stack up over the years. At the end of the day, the Series S will suffice for most players so long as youre fine with its lack of 4K and a disc drive.

Xbox Series X Restocks: Our Top Tips

We’ve been tracking Xbox Series X restocks for a while now, which means we’ve picked up some tricks along the way. You’ll find our top tips for making the most of each stock drop just below.

1. Sign in and save your detailsThis is the one that catches the most people out. Create an account with each retailer and sign in ahead of time, adding your payment and shipping information. Seconds count when the clock is ticking, and that clock is never faster than when there’s a console sitting in your cart. Avoid spending too long at checkout to make sure you don’t have your goods sniped away at the last moment.

2. Stay in touch with retailers and trackersRetailers and trackers will let you know about upcoming Xbox Series X restock opportunities on social media. This is the fastest way to land on the right website at the right time, so be sure to stay active and keep checking back over time.

3. Keep refreshingIf you do catch a live one, you’ll need to fight to reel it in. Keep refreshing the page if you initially land on an out of stock message, open up multiple tabs if the website is crashing, and keep forcing your way through to checkout. It can be a gruelling process, but it’s often a successful one.

4. Don’t give upDon’t take the desperate move of paying over MSRP via a reseller. Xbox Series X restocks are still far too regular to warrant buying a console from a scalper, and the internet is filled with untrustworthy sources – it’s just not worth it.

Xbox Series S: A Digital Gateway

The Xbox Series S will primarily act as a digital gateway for both Microsofts game-streaming service, Project xCloud, and its ever-growing Xbox Game Pass service .

Xbox Cloud gaming aims to leverage Microsofts existing data centers across the globe, literally loading up servers with the component parts of multiple Xbox One consoles, and using these to run the games streamed directly to your mobile device of choice, thought it’s only available on Android devices for now.

This means that gamers will be able to play the likes of Halo Infinite, Forza and other classic console and PC big hitters on their phones, tablets or Windows 10 computers.

Meanwhile, Xbox Game Pass is essentially a Netflix for games, allowing subscribers to access lots of Xbox games digitally. The service has grown massively since its launch in 2017, boasting over 10 million subscribers.

Services such as Xbox Cloud gaming and Xbox Game Pass prove that physical discs aren’t always necessary, with Microsoft offering plenty of content for those who choose to go digital-only. Xbox Series S will undoubtedly take this initiative into the next generation, proving that these services alone can support a next-gen console.

Why Is The Xbox Tough To Find

Essentially, Microsoft hasn’t been able to get the materials it needs to make enough Xbox consoles to meet demand. As with the PlayStation 5 and most PC video cards, there’s a chip shortage right now that is slowing supply. The pandemic affected production for a lot of chip manufacturers, and industry watchers currently don’t expect the issue to be entirely resolved for months to come.

As a result, Microsoft makes as many consoles as it can and distributes them among its retail partners. Each retailer releases its available consoles in whatever way it deems appropriate. Most of the time, this means announcing ahead of time when you’ll be able to buy the console online and then releasing it for anyone to buy.

The Xbox Series X restock at Walmart last week was one of the longest the console has ever been available at a single stretch, but the availability wasn’t quite what everyone expected. Many who purchased the console were told the shipping date wouldn’t be for a couple of weeks, because unlike other retailers Walmart was holding its Xbox Series X restock before the consoles were actually in its warehouse. Right now, the console is listed as available and shipping tomorrow, but only because the console is being sold by a third party and not officially through Walmart.

If you don’t want to wait for the delayed shipping and increased price from Walmart and need a console now, your best bet is to buy through a service like StockX or eBay, so there’s a layer of buyer protection in case the transaction isn’t legitimate.

Here are our tips for scoring a console safely and without paying inflated prices.

Why Was The Xbox Series X Out Of Stock

Xbox Series X Restock Updates – When Are More Consoles Coming? | 8-Bit Eric

The Xbox Series X stock shortage has a few causes, all working together to make it fairly difficult to pick up a new console. Chip shortages across the tech world have slowed production on everything from consoles to mobile phones due to the pandemic.

Back in early 2020, chip makers pivoted from declining markets like the automotive industry to meet the incredible demand for consumer electronics. This involved new processes and workloads, as the semi-conductor market scrambled to switch its focus. As the world shut down, however, so did factories and ports. That’s when bad luck kicked in, as droughts, fires, and winter storms damaged chip plants and halted manufacture even further.

The events of the last 24 months have all swirled together to make it difficult for Microsoft to order enough chips to produce enough consoles and meet demand.
