Halo Servers Are Going Offline On January 13

Microsoft decided to shut down the servers of multiple classic Halo titles on Xbox 360, as they said they would last year.

Needless to say that Halo 3 and Halo Reach had some of the best multiplayer communities and is even considered by many the golden period for the Halo multiplayer experience.

343 Industries announced, in a recent blog post, that the online services for numerous Halo games will not be supported from January 13, 2022.

The tech giant shutting down Xbox 360 Halo servers will definitely mark the end of an awesome era of gaming, but also start the new, modern age of Halo games.

It is important to know that this shutdown will not impact games in the Halo: The Master Chief Collection if you were curious about that.

The same goes for Halo Wars: Definitive Edition, which is actually an enhanced version released for Xbox One and Windows, back in 2016.

On January 13, 2022, Xbox 360 game servers for Halo games will be turned off . This means that while these games can still be played, online services such as challenges and file sharing will no longer be available.

This goes for the Xbox 360 versions of the following games:

  • Halo: Reach
  • Spartan Assault
  • Halo Wars

But theres no reason to be sad about this because, while the news of Xbox 360 Halo game servers shutting down, it seems like 343 and Microsoft are already planning ahead.

We all had some pretty good times playing throughout the Halo franchise, but its time to look up and embrace the future.

Grand Theft Auto Online

Grand Theft Auto 6 is nowhere in sight. Why would it be when Rockstar and publisher Take-Two are still raking in the cash with Grand Theft Auto Online? The multiplayer component was not always the beloved experience it is today, however. It launched on Xbox 360 and PS3 two weeks after Grand Theft Auto 5 in an arguably broken state.

Playing with others was difficult for months and there was not a lot of content to engage with. GTA Online improved immensely through the years and with the next-generation upgrade. Now, eight years later, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the multiplayer component are going offline in December 2021.

Xbox 360 Halo Servers Will Now Shut Down In January 2022

343 Industries has announced a minor adjustment to the planned sunsetting of Halo game servers for Xbox 360. Where online matchmaking and other functionality had been planned to end in December 2021, the new date for the server shut down is now 13th January 2022.

The following Xbox 360 games are affected:

  • Spartan Assault
  • Halo Wars

After that time, all of the games will still be playable in single player and with some local multiplayer options, but the central Xbox Live servers will be giving you the cold shoulder. Heres the breakdown of the exact game-by-game impact.

Its worth noting that, while the recreation isnt always completely, 100% perfect, all of the mainline Halo games are available through Halo: The Master Chief Collection. You also have Halo Wars Definitive Edition and Spartan Assault with Xbox One releases. None of these games on current hardware are affected.

When announced the sunsetting plans last December, 343 Industries noted that the player counts across all of these games had dwindled to the point that continuing to maintain the game servers would take resources away from maintaining Halo: TMCC and the upcoming Halo Infinite.

Yesterday gave us the first look at Halo Infinites campaign in over a year, showcasing the revised graphical style, giving us more details on the open world and Master Chiefs suit upgrades, as well as the story and the enemies he will face. Read all about it here, or watch the trailer below.

What Servers Shut Down On Jan 13

Halo Servers Have Been Shutdown On Xbox 360 – What Still Works & What Doesn’t

Halo Support has announced that the Xbox 360 servers for the platform’s Halo games will shut down on January 13. That includes all of the first-person shooters that the franchise is known for: Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST, Halo 4, Halo: Reach and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, a remake of the first game in the series.

Halo 4 and Reach will lose the most online features when the servers shut down. That includes Matchmaking, Fileshare, Service Record, Challenges, Player Customization, and MOTD. Halo 3 and ODST will retain Service Records and Player Customization but lose everything else, including ODST’s extras. Combat Evolved Anniversary and the two Halo games outside of the FPS genre, isometric shooter Spartan Assault and real-time strategy game Halo Wars, will be unaffected by the server shutdown.

While this will be a crushing blow for anyone who still enjoys playing Halo on their 360, it also affects players on current hardware. Players who passed on The Master Chief Collection and continue to play the 360 Halo games on the Xbox One and Series X|S will also lose online functionality when the servers shut down on the 13th. While the games can be played on current hardware, they’re still beholden to the 360’s servers for online multiplayer.

The Xbox 360 Servers For Halo Titles Are Being Shut Down Next Week

343 Industries will switch off the Xbox 360 game servers for a number of Halo titles on January 13, 2022, meaning a host of online services will be kaput as of next week.

Modes such as campaign, firefight, and spartan ops will remain accessible alongside custom games, forge mode, and split screen. Other services like matchmaking, fileshare, and challenges will, however, be laid to rest.

The Xbox 360 versions of seven Halo games will be affected in some capacity by the move, including Halo: Reach, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 4, Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo Spartan Assault, and Halo Wars.

343 noted that games in Halo: The Master Chief Collection won’t be affected as they have been rebuilt and remastered to leverage different, modernized services.

The chart below explains how each Xbox 360 title will be impacted by the move, and indicates matchmaking and fileshare have already been stripped from titles including Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 4, and Halo Reach.

In a brief FAQ, 343 confirmed those players using backwards compatibility to play 360 titles will also be affected as the underlying content relies on legacy online services.

Goodnight, sweet prince. The plug has finally been pulled on the Halo 3, Halo 4, Reach and Halo Wars servers for Xbox 360. The servers for the original Xbox 360 Halo titles went down on January 13, and gamers were given a heads up beforehand. So, the gamers invested in the funeral of Halo 3 went online for one last hoo-rah with fellow marines, sending out Halo 3 Xbox 360 servers with a bang, just the way Johnson would have wanted.

Images of the Halo 3 servers going offline has finally come. Players have started posting post-mortem posts on sites such as Reddit, along with players sharing their favourite memories of Halo 3.

For me, Halo 3 was the game that I spent most of my 13-year-old life on. Forge on Foundry was certainly my home, as it was for many of my friends. The amount of fun Indiana Jones maps we made, Infected haunted house maps played, and of course, sharing great creations made that game special.

In fact, other staff at WePC loved it so much they made a montage of some of the awesome times back in the days of 2008, which we have linked here if you want to watch it.

What Halo Multiplayer Options Will Still Be Available

Multiplayer will still be possible on the 360 when the servers are shut down, although it will almost entirely be local play. Players can still play the Halo games’ multiplayer modes in the most old-school ways. All of the FPS Halo games on the 360 have split-screen modes that 360 diehards can take advantage of after the servers are shut down. Throwing a LAN party is also an option, although it’s not ideal given that we’re still dealing with a pandemic.

Custom Games and the Forge Mode are also still playable in a post 360 server world for Halo 3, Halo 4, and Reach. Online Squads will still be available post-shutdown for all FPS games except for Combat Evolved Anniversary. It’s a functional set-up for players who can still participate in couch co-op, but it will be hard to go back to after so many years of seamless online multiplayer.

While the Halo FPS games are about to lose key online features, the two spin-offs in other genres aren’t. Fans of Spartan Assault and Halo Wars will continue to enjoy matchmaking on the 360 and through backward compatibility. That’s excellent news for Halo Wars fans who never picked up the enhanced Definitive Edition for Xbox One or PC and still enjoy an online skirmish in the first Halo RTS.

Four of these ten games now have unfinishable accomplishment lists, meaning you cant get the maximum gamerscore without completing online milestones. Rabbids: Alive and Kicking, Assassins Creed III, and also the Brotherhood and Revelations are the four games in question.

While its a shame that supports for these older games is being phased out, its inevitable. Wed prefer for these games to patch out their online accomplishments before that date, but owing to their age, its not always possible.

While the majority of Xbox 360 consoles come with a hard drive, the 4 GB S, Arcade, and Core variants do not. To store the emulation software and stored game data for Xbox games, youll need a genuine Xbox 360 hard drive.

On their Xbox console, all gamers get free access to various multiplayer games available. Xbox Live Gold is not mandatory for these games. On your Xbox system, youll be able to download and play for free.
