Fourth Generation: Xbox Series X And Series S
The fourth generation of Xbox models, simply named Xbox, includes the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S that launched on November 10, 2020. Both are considered members of the ninth generation of video game consoles alongside the PlayStation 5, also released that month.
The Xbox Series X and Series S are high- and low-end versions comparable to the Xbox One X and Xbox One S models, respectively, with all games designed for this model family playable on both systems. The Xbox Series X is estimated to be four times as powerful as Xbox One X, with support for 8K resolution and up to 120 frames-per-second rendering, with a nominal target of 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. The Xbox Series S is a digital-only unit with less graphic processing power, but can still render at a nominal 1440p resolution at 60 frames per second with support for 4K upscaling. Both consoles features support for new graphics rendering systems including real-time ray-tracing, and the new Xbox Velocity Architecture that works with the internal SSD drive to maximize the rate of texture streaming to the graphics processor, among other features. Besides games for this new console family, both consoles are fully compatible with all Xbox One games and most hardware, as well as all backward compatible games that were playable on the Xbox One from the Xbox 360 and original Xbox console.

Xbox Series S Price: Cheaper Digital Edition
Rumours circled for months that Microsoft was working on a cheaper Xbox to launch alongside the Series X. Sure enough, the Xbox Series S is a digital-only version of its next-gen console in order to lower the barrier to entry.
It costs £249.99 . That’s just over half the price of the full-fat Xbox Series X and could be a very tempting price for UK gamers.
Gamers in 12 countries, including the US, UK and Australia, also have the option to buy the Series S and pay in instalments. Microsoft’s Xbox All Access service gets you Series S console plus Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Live Gold in return for £20.99 per month over a 24 month period.
The main difference between the Xbox Series X and Series S is that the latter doesn’t have a disc drive. Another big difference is that while both consoles support high frame rates of up to 120fps, the Xbox Series X offers native 4K gaming, while the Series S is geared more towards 1440p. If you want to make the most of your 4K TV, the Series X would be the obvious choice, but those with gaming monitors might be perfectly well served by the Series S.
The Series S isn’t as powerful, though. Both consoles have the same Zen 2-based CPU but the Xbox Series X runs at 3.8Hz, while the Series S runs at 3.4Hz. And where the Xbox Series S has 10GB of GDDR6 memory running at 224Gbps, the Series X offers 16GB of GDDR6.

Is Xbox One Dead
No. Its true that the Xbox one sold poorly compared to Sonys PlayStation 4, but in many ways the Xbox series X marks a shift in how Microsoft views the traditional console cycle. Rather than thinking in generations and hardware, the company is now focusing on providing ongoing access to games as a subscription service, similar to how Netflix or Spotify operates.
Game Pass is Microsofts on-demand games platform, giving players access to over 100 full games for a monthly fee. Microsoft is investing heavily in its subscription offering, snapping up large games publishers like Bethesda in a bid to bolster its library of titles and lure players away from Sonys rival PlayStation Now service.
Even the very latest games on Game Pass are designed to be compatible with previous consoles as well as next-generation ones, so that over time, owning the newest hardware becomes less important for the majority of players. Older generations of Xbox are expected to dodge the landfill for a while yet.
Xbox One X Hardware Specs
If youre looking to see the real differences between the Xbox One X and every other console thats come before it, all youd need to do is open the lid. It goes without saying, though, that this is no longer the console you want if you’re looking for a top-of-the-line machine in 2020.
The console comes equipped with an eight-core CPU clocked at 2.3GHz, alongside 12GB of GDDR5 RAM. It features a GPU clocked at 1172MHz leaving the console with 6 teraflops of graphical computing power. The specs in the Xbox One X are pretty extensive, and helped usher in a new era of 4K HDR gaming in the living room that the Series S and Series X will continue.
Unlike a video cards dedicated VRAM, the Xbox One Xs 12GB of RAM is split between the system and the GPU . So you can definitely buy a gaming PC that’s better than this especially in 2020.
On the CPU side, the Xbox One X is running a custom chip with eight Jaguar CPU cores clocked at 2.3GHz. Thats a 76% increase compared to the CPU inside the original Xbox One and Xbox One S, but probably only puts it in the ballpark of a current-gen Intel Core i3 processor .
The more important comparison for the Xbox One X specs, and the one Microsoft would rather you focus on, is those of the PS4 Pro. Both were released midway through the last generation, and each aims for 4K gaming, so they are directly comparable.

Ark 2 Will Bring A Survival Sandbox To Xbox In 2022
ARK 2 is the highly-anticipated sequel to ARK: Survival Evolved. It was announced at The Game Awards 2020 where a cinematic trailer for the game was shown. Like its predecessor, ARK 2 is a survival sandbox game that features a prehistoric environment, filled with dinosaurs.
The game, which takes place after the events of Genesis: Part 2, has been surrounded by speculation over actor Vin Diesels involvement. Studio Wildcard released a trailer for ARK 2 starring Vin Diesel, but hell also be an executive producer for the game and the upcoming ARK animated series. While ARK 2 wont stray too far from the first ARK game, fans can look forward to next-gen graphics and gameplay. ARK 2 is set to be released in 2022, but no exact release date is confirmed. Microsoft picked up ARK 2 as an Xbox Exclusive, but its not yet known if the game will be available on Xbox Game Pass.
Competing With The Xbox Series Consoles
Of the two last-gen consoles, only the Xbox One X comes somewhat close to holding its own against the Xbox Series S though nowhere close to the Xbox Series X. The Xbox One X has 12GB of memory versus 10GB with the Series S, plus 6 teraflops of graphics versus 4 teraflops with the Series S. They both have eight CPU cores, and the One X has a terabyte of storage versus 512GB on the Series S. Plus, the Series S is stuck at 1440p for gaming, while the One X offers 4K gaming if you own a 4K TV. While the Series S does support 4K streaming, it lacks an optical drive, meaning only the Xbox One X can double as a 4K UHD player.
Overall, however, the Series S is still a superior piece of machinery. Even if its smaller in pure gigabytes, its solid-state drive drastically reduces loading times versus the One Xs hard drive. Its eight cores hit 3.6GHz instead of a mere 2.3GHz. Even with fewer teraflops, the Series S supports effects like ray tracing and dynamic lighting that the Xbox One X cannot. Most importantly, the Series S consistently hits 60 fps and can rise as high as 120 for some games, while the One X may hit 4K but is stuck at 30 fps in that mode.

Integrating Kinect With Microsoft Azure
Microsoft had abandoned the idea of Kinect for video games, but still explored the potential of Kinect beyond that. Microsoft’s Director of Communications Greg Sullivan stated in 2018 that “I think one of the things that is beginning to be understood is that Kinect was never really just the gaming peripheral…It was always more.” Part of Kinect technology was integrated into Microsoft’s Hololens, first released in 2016.
Microsoft announced that it was working on a new version of a hardware Kinect model for non-game applications that would integrate with their Azure cloud computing services in May 2018. The use of cloud computing to offload some of the computational work from Kinect, as well as more powerful features enable by Azure such as artificial intelligence would improve the accuracy of the depth-sensing and reduce the power demand and would lead to more compact units, Microsoft had envisioned. The Azure Kinect device was released on June 27, 2019 at a price of US$400, while the SDK for the unit had been released in February 2019.
Sky UK announced a new line of Sky Glass television units to launch in 2022 that incorporate the Kinect technology in partnership with Microsoft. Using the Kinect features, the viewer will be able to control the television through motion controls and audio commands, and supports social features such as social viewing.

Gears Of War Graphics And Performance Examples
Gears of War, Xbox One X: This cropped image in Visuals graphics mode shows dynamic lighting to its best effect. This scene in HDR is stunning
The same scene but in Performance mode. You lose some sharpness but gain twice the framerate, and keep the same lovely lighting and textures
That same scene again on the One S. Theres a lack of sharpness and the colours are quite clearly more muted. Not exactly ugly, though.
Xbox One X cropped image: Note the sharpness of the character model and the detail on the ground textures
On the One S, details are again a bit more hazy, as are a few textures. But the difference is far less stark than in the first image comparison and would be hard to tell at a glance.
FIFA 18 has also been updated, but it doesnt affect the game nearly as much as Gears. The only difference I could spot was a bucketload of extra sharpness around players on the pitch, which isnt to be sniffed at. Its easiest to see when the ball is in play, which is where people spend most of their time anyway. Everywhere else, like in replays and player close-ups, its less obvious.
But it wasnt like FIFA 18 needed many enhancements anyway simply lifting the game into Ultra HD makes more difference than anything else could, and it looks great.
Microsofts Xbox One X To Release November 7th 2017
Microsofts latest contribution to the gaming industry comes in the form of the Xbox One X and is slated to release next month on November 7th, priced at $500. This is the 3rd full iteration of the Xbox console since the original Xbox release 16 years ago in November of 2001, with the X being the 3rd version of the Xbox One. Microsoft is touting this new console as the best console ever released with 40% more power compared to any other leading gaming system, and the only console to be able to display full 4K video and gaming while still managing to maintain 60hz. The most recent version of the Xbox One, the S was released last year and could deliver 4K in video display only.
While Microsoft presents the Xbox One X as an entirely new console, it is still essentially an upgrade to the previous Xbox One systems and will play all the Xbox One games released for the system since 2013 however, there will also be games specifically marketed as Xbox One Enhanced, HDR enabled, 4K, or Optimized for Xbox One X, these terms will be displayed on the game boxes or in the game description on the Xbox Marketplaceif youre looking to move to an all-digital gaming library. Of note, all previous released Xbox One games and accessories are said to be compatible with the X.

Xbox Series X Review: Ports
Keeping with the clean look, the Xbox Series X has only a USB 3.1 Type-A port and a Blu-ray disc drive on the consoles front. There’s also a wireless controller pairing button. That makes it very easy to quickly plug in a controller to charge, or an external hard drive to transfer games and saves to and from the Series X.
Around the back of the Series X, theres a much wider port selection. Youll find one HDMI 2.1 port: crucial for gaming at 8K, and allowing TVs with 120 Hz panels to take advantage of the 120 frames per second frame rate for certain games. There are also two more USB 3.1 ports – handy for external storage that you plan to keep connected to your console – as well as an Ethernet port and Kensington lock.
Theres no optical audio connection or HDMI-in port, like there were on the Xbox One and One X. However, dropping optical audio is likely to be a pain for only people with powerful audio systems, and the HDMI connection can still carry Dolby Atmos and surround sound signals. Were not really sure if many people used the HDMI-in, so dropping it from the Series X isnt a big deal. It also avoids any chance of plugging an HDMI cable into the wrong port, then wondering why your TV isnt getting a signal: something that’s happened to me before.
The most noteworthy port however, is the expansion slot. This is for the proprietary external PCIe 4.0 SSD that will let you expand the Series X with an extra 1 TB of speedy storage.
