Integrating Kinect With Microsoft Azure

PUBG Xbox One X Gameplay Review Sanhok Launch 1.0 Release

Microsoft had abandoned the idea of Kinect for video games, but still explored the potential of Kinect beyond that. Microsoft’s Director of Communications Greg Sullivan stated in 2018 that “I think one of the things that is beginning to be understood is that Kinect was never really just the gaming peripheral…It was always more.” Part of Kinect technology was integrated into Microsoft’s Hololens, first released in 2016.

Microsoft announced that it was working on a new version of a hardware Kinect model for non-game applications that would integrate with their Azure cloud computing services in May 2018. The use of cloud computing to offload some of the computational work from Kinect, as well as more powerful features enable by Azure such as artificial intelligence would improve the accuracy of the depth-sensing and reduce the power demand and would lead to more compact units, Microsoft had envisioned. The Azure Kinect device was released on June 27, 2019 at a price of US$400, while the SDK for the unit had been released in February 2019.

Xbox One X Hardware Specs

If youre looking to see the real differences between the Xbox One X and every other console thats come before it, all youd need to do is open the lid.;It goes without saying, though, that this is no longer the console you want if you’re looking for a top-of-the-line machine in 2020.;

The console comes equipped with an eight-core CPU clocked at 2.3GHz, alongside 12GB of GDDR5 RAM. It features a GPU clocked at 1172MHz leaving the console with 6 teraflops of graphical computing power. The specs in the Xbox One X are pretty extensive, and helped usher in a new era of 4K HDR gaming in the living room that the Series S and Series X will continue.;

Unlike a video cards dedicated VRAM, the Xbox One Xs 12GB of RAM is split between the system and the GPU . So you can definitely buy a gaming PC that’s better than this especially in 2020.

On the CPU side, the Xbox One X is running a custom chip with eight Jaguar CPU cores clocked at 2.3GHz. Thats a 76% increase compared to the CPU inside the original Xbox One and Xbox One S, but probably only puts it in the ballpark of a current-gen Intel Core i3 processor .

The more important comparison for the Xbox One X specs, and the one Microsoft would rather you focus on, is those of the PS4 Pro. Both were released midway through the last generation, and each aims for 4K gaming, so they are directly comparable.;

Xbox Series X: Design

Youd be forgiven for saying that the Xbox Series X looks like a small-form-factor PC, because it does; at least when its standing upright. Its monolithic design could be seen as uninspired. But I rather like the system’s clean and unfussy appearance. Its big, however.;

Measuring 15.1 x 15.1 x 30.1 centimeters and weighing 9.8 pounds, the Series X is a rather bulky machine, though not as large as the PS5. This means youll struggle to fit it into an entertainment unit, unless you place the device on its side. Theres a quartet of soft pads on one side of the console to show you which way it should be positioned when lying sideways. These also prevent the console from slipping around.;

I think the Xbox Series X looks a little clunky and clumsy on its side, a bit like the lovechild of an audio amplifier and a brick. I keep mine upright and sitting partially behind my TV, and it looks rather nice in that space, particularly as you can peer into the top vent of the console, which has some green accents around the holes towards the middle.

In fact, while it might look a little clunky peeking out from behind my TV, I think the Series X looks rather good sitting on a desktop. If you plan to plug the system into a 4K or high-refresh-rate monitor, you could be pleasantly surprised.

The Xbox Family: What It Means For The Future

The next generation of Xbox devices, currently codenamed Project Scarlett, is being referred to as a “family of devices.” Not only is Microsoft planning a true next-gen powerhouse console, but rumors also suggest they will offer a more affordable console that relies on cloud streaming to play the same games.

Yet another report from Thurrott revealed that existence of two consoles in this family. The second console utilizes the Scarlett Cloud to make up for a lack of hardware in the box.

The less powerful streaming console will still require hardware for controller input, image processing, and collision detection, so it’s not going to be cheap, but it will cost less than he major hardware option. Microsoft apparently has some solutions regarding latency and lag in place as well, thanks to their Azure cloud and its prevalence around the world.

Whether you opt for the next-gen console or the cloud-based streaming device, Microsoft is planning on offering the same games for both, much in the way that Xbox One X and the S play the same games in this generation.

It’s a bold move, but it’s grounded in business sense. Microsoft doesn’t make a lot of money on their hardware, but they do make a lot of profits from Xbox Live, Game Pass, and their game sales. Project Scarlett and this second cloud-based console option could give them a boost to their profits while also offering options for both mainstream and hardcore gamers.

Is The Xbox Series Xs 1 Tb Of Storage Enough

Xbox One X UK release date, specs and price

For now, sure. There wont be a ton of new games this year, and backward-compatible games work just as well on an affordable external SSD more on that in a moment.

In the long term, though, its probably not enough. AAA games were already unwieldy on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. As developers create larger worlds with higher-resolution assets, we will see far greater storage demands. On PC, Microsofts own Flight Simulator can surpass 100 GB, while and Warzone eat up 222 GB. Four or five big games will eat the entirety of the Xbox Series Xs internal storage.

Xbox One X Spec Makes It The Most Powerful Console Of All Time

  • CPU has eight custom x86 cores clocked at 2.3GHz
  • GPU has 40 customised compute units clocked at 1172GHz
  • A total of 12GB of GGDR5 RAM
  • 1TB 2.5 inch hard drive as standard
  • 4K UHD Blu-ray Playback

In a report by Windows Central we were given a glimpse at how Xbox One games will look running on Xbox One X. The article shows the differences between Xbox One games running at 1080p and the same game running in 4K . The tech demo also highlighted the kind of visual changes we might see thanks to the extra power available to developers. A shot showing a rendered ladybug demonstrated better textures and additional geometry.

While most new consoles on the market take the crown for being the most powerful, its significant for Microsoft as its been playing second fiddle to Sonys PS4 for some time. The Xbox brand has suffered in recent years for a number of reasons, but the Xbox One being substantially weaker than the PS4 in terms of processing power has been a major factor.

Xbox One X Game Performance And Library

Of course, whats the end-goal of all this extra horsepower if not a better gaming experience? Thankfully here were happy to report that the Xbox One X performs exactly as advertised: Games look great across the board. Whether youre using a 1080p TV with the Xbox One X or playing in 4K HDR, games look fantastic on the most powerful console of the last generation.;

But lets break down each use case individually.;

If youre a 1080p TV owner, the Xbox One X will do something called supersampling to create better-looking images. Supersampling is a complex term but the basic idea is that the game renders itself in 4K thinking its connected to a 4K screen, which means objects are rendered with four times the detail. All this data cant be displayed, because at the end its still being shown on a 1080p TV with a set number of pixels on its display, but the resulting image is one that’s more detail-rich.;

In practice that means images are going to look a bit sharper. Trees, branches and foliage in general wont look so jagged, for example, and basic fog on an Xbox One might become thicker and more realistic while using an Xbox One X.

Once you see a game running in 1080p with supersampling its very obvious that it looks better than a game running in standard 1080p. But if youre not the kind of person who takes a minute to smell the roses in games the kind who can appreciate a fine edge on a shrub or a rich, dense fog in the morning then Xbox One X isnt going to impress you.;

Can I Easily Move My Xbox One Saves To The Xbox Series X

The easiest option, in my experience, is to upload your saves to the cloud. When I played backward-compatible games on the Series X, they loaded directly from the cloud saves without me having to think about transferring anything manually. According to Microsoft, Xbox 360 cloud saves will now be available for free to all Xbox users, not just Xbox Live Gold subscribers.

Back To Black: Xbox One X

As the latest entry in the Xbox console family, the Xbox One X delivers a variety of cutting-edge features as a true flagship for Microsoft. With a significant bump in resources, the console’s six teraflops of computational power make for the most powerful console on the market. Many games can achieve 4K resolution, output a High Dynamic Range image, and consistently push high frame rates.

Blank Slate: Xbox One White Special Edition

The first white Xbox One console arrived in late 2014, accompanying the launch of the action and adventure game, Sunset Overdrive. Deviating from the previous standard black consoles, the bundle offered a truly unique design that stood out against other hardware variants on the market. This console would also be repackaged under a second bundle for Halo: The Master Chief Collection later that year.

Xbox Series X Review: Performance

There are now more Xbox Series X optimized games than there were at launch, showcasing what the 12 teraflops of graphics power can do when its applied to patched games, both old and new.

One of the standout titles is Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. While not a Xbox Series X exclusive it’s a game with impressive visuals and graphics setting, and is best played on new games console hardware. When it first launched on the Xbox Series X its performance left something to be desired as there were frame rate drops, some screen tearing and an overall performance profile that didn’t stand up to the PS5 version.;

But after a major patch, the game runs a lot more smoothly on the Xbox Series X. It targets 60 frames per second, and in my experience mostly reaches that. But it uses a dynamic resolution, which can scale from 4K down to 1440p when there’s a lot of action on the screen. So its not delivering a true 100% native 4K experience.

Maybe its a testament to the quality of the upscaler in my 4K TV, but I can’t really tell when there was a resolution drop. And for a game that looks as good as Assassin’s Creed ;Valhalla, its impressive that a $500 box is pumping out crisp visuals and a steady frame rate; similar performance on a PC would require an investment of at least $1,000.;

Gears 5 is one title that has been given the full Xbox Series X optimization treatment. That means it can run at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, or 120 fps if you have a compatible TV.;

Medal Of Honor: Xbox One X Battlefield V Gold Rush Special Edition

Another Xbox One X gradient hit the market in celebration of Electronic Arts’ WWII shooter, Battlefield V. The “Gold Rush” console featured a metallic gold fade into black, offering a unique twist on the standard colorway. This bundle was paired with the Battlefield V Deluxe Edition, Battlefield 1943 for Xbox 360, alongside a matching controller.

Is It Easy To Transfer Games From An External Hard Drive Onto The Xbox Series Xs Solid

Its easy, for sure, but its only fast if you use the optimal hard drive.

Digital Foundry found that transferring games from an NVMe SSD and SATA SSD takes a comparable amount of time. In their testing, they transferred onto the Xbox Series X in roughly nine minutes. However, when testing a mechanical hard drive, the transfer took a little over 20 minutes.

Vr On Xbox: All The Options

There hasn’t been any mention of VR on the Xbox Series X, but with the success Sony has seen with PSVR, I wouldn’t rule it out.

On the one hand, Oculus Rift seemed like a solid choice, but then Microsoft announced its own line of Windows 10 VR headsets in late 2016.

What we do know, is that the headsets are being made by different manufacturers and will start at $300 for the base model. The entire line of headsets also supports inside-out tracking sensors which removes the need for a camera or external sensor.

These are different than the HoloLens, which is an augmented reality headset. For the time being, its assumed that these headsets will still be wired in nature. Current partners listed were HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer, so it stands to reason that one of these manufacturers are working on a variation of their Windows 10 headset for Xbox One X.

Some of these manufacturers are already working on headsets. Acer is working with Starbreeze to create the high-end line of StarVR headsets. Asus has a leather strapped headset, and AntVR is partnering with Lenovo for mobile VR setups.

Virtual reality and, by extension, augmented reality, are a growing industry. So far, the technology has been well-received and PlayStation’s VR solution is no slouch either.

Let’s say that Xbox Series X does get the Oculus Rift, or something equivalent. This is a first generation VR headset. It works great, but it’s the first step.

Initial Unveiling And Launch

Prior to the official unveiling, a rumor had circulated that the next Xbox console would be an “always on” system requiring a persistent Internet connection, though Microsoft had not confirmed this. This had drawn some concerns from consumers, which were heightened when Microsoft Studios employee Adam Orth stated in a message in April 2013 that said, “Sorry, I don’t get the drama around having an ‘always on’ console…Every device now is ‘always on.’ That’s the world we live in. #dealwithit”. Orth’s message drew further ire towards Microsoft, with concerns about digital rights management and practices against the sale of used games with an “always on” unit. Orth opted to leave Microsoft a few days later due to the backlash. Despite Microsoft’s statements following the situation, denying the rumors, the mood it created lingered over the next several months.

In response to these pre-launch changes and a belief that Microsoft’s initial decisions for the console were in poor judgement, journalists and consumers jokingly gave the Xbox One nicknames such as the “Xbox 180”, in reference to the Xbox 360 and Microsoft’s decision to reverse its controversial decisions, and “Xbone”, suggesting that the company was “throwing a bone” to consumers by making these changes.
