Xbox Series X Review: Performance
There are now more Xbox Series X optimized games than there were at launch, showcasing what the 12 teraflops of graphics power can do when its applied to patched games, both old and new.
One of the standout titles is Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. While not a Xbox Series X exclusive it’s a game with impressive visuals and graphics setting, and is best played on new games console hardware. When it first launched on the Xbox Series X its performance left something to be desired as there were frame rate drops, some screen tearing and an overall performance profile that didn’t stand up to the PS5 version.
But after a major patch, the game runs a lot more smoothly on the Xbox Series X. It targets 60 frames per second, and in my experience mostly reaches that. But it uses a dynamic resolution, which can scale from 4K down to 1440p when there’s a lot of action on the screen. So its not delivering a true 100% native 4K experience.
Maybe its a testament to the quality of the upscaler in my 4K TV, but I can’t really tell when there was a resolution drop. And for a game that looks as good as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, its impressive that a $500 box is pumping out crisp visuals and a steady frame rate similar performance on a PC would require an investment of at least $1,000.
Gears 5 is one title that has been given the full Xbox Series X optimization treatment. That means it can run at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, or 120 fps if you have a compatible TV.

How The Xbox Family Will Play Into Console Generations And Lead To Xbox 2
The concept of the Xbox One Family is unique, and it does offer Microsoft the ability to extend and iterate on a generation, but it’s not future-proof. Eventually, that family will need to graduate to a new generation. Xbox One X offers Microsoft the chance to keep this generation for a few more years, but the Xbox Two will mark the beginning of a new family.
When we think of console generations, we usually think of them as single consoles. The original Xbox, the Xbox 360, and the Xbox One. The problem with that structure, is that technology is moving too fast for one console to meet the needs of an entire generation.
Instead, an iterative approach makes more sense here. One generation, spread across multiple consoles that get incrementally more powerful as you move up the chain. This way, Microsoft can stay competitive in terms of power, but also keep multiple hardware releases within that same family.
The next generation will be another branch in the family tree if you will. It could be called Xbox Two, but we currently know it as Project Scarlett. The current rumors point to this being two different devices: one for streaming your games, and one for hardcore gamers who want all of the best hardware under the hood.
Despite this, people were worried about the fate of an Xbox 2. During a podcast with IGN, Microsoft’s Albert Penello offered us a small quote that tells us the Xbox 2 is happening:

The Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S are home video game consoles developed by Microsoft. They were both released on November 10, 2020 as the fourth generation of the Xbox console family, succeeding the Xbox One family. Along with Sony’s PlayStation 5, also released in November 2020, the Xbox Series X and Series S are part of the ninth generation of video game consoles.
Is The New Xbox Backward Compatible With Older Games
The Xbox Series X and Series S are backward compatible with all but a handful of Xbox One titles which were based around the no longer supported Kinect sensor. The Series X and Series S will also play the hundreds of Xbox 360 and Xbox titles that Microsoft made the Xbox One backward compatible with as well. Almost all backward-compatible titles will have a variety of graphical enhancements.
What Is The Xbox Series X Release Date In Australia
Microsoft has officially confirmed that the Xbox Series X will launch on 10 November 2020 in Australia. It will launch simmultanously with the Xbox Series S.
This beats out Sony’s PlayStation 5 by two days, as it launches on 12 November 2020. It’s a win for Microsoft that it has got its Xbox Series X console out before its rival, even if it’s marginal. The date is also well-timed to make the most of the lead-up to Christmas. The end-of-year buying frenzy is a key event to be a part of, not to mention it’s the start of the cold months for the Northern Hemisphere where more time inside is a given.
It should come as no surprise that the last three consoles in the Xbox family the Xbox One, Xbox 360 and the original Xbox all released in November.

Xbox Family Settings App
In May 2020, Xbox presented a preview version of an app that allows parents and guardians to set daily limits for their children’s playing time, provides weekly activity reports, filters out age-restricted games, and places limits on online communication. This is the attempt of Microsoft, Xbox’s owner, to promote a message of responsible gaming. The full release is expected in the end of 2020 or later.

Xbox Series X User Experience
- The user interface is faster and more intuitive, yet remains the same
- Quick Resume and instant-on power states make navigation a breeze
- Taking screenshots and videos is much easier than before
The user interface for Xbox Series X is virtually identical to the previous generation, although the power of the console allows for everything to feel far more cohesive and satisfying during moment-to-moment navigation. You can transition between menus and applications within seconds, instead of having to wait for assets to load on Xbox One. Its such a stark difference, and I found it hard to go back when revisiting older hardware.
Sharing screenshots and videos has been a part of the Xbox ecosystem for several years now, and the new controller allows you to capture them with a touch of a button. Its seamless, and everything you take will be automatically uploaded to Xbox Live for saving and sharing after the fact. Or, you can do it directly from your console.
Theres still a few more hoops to jump through before sharing a screenshot than Id like, and the experience lags behind the PS5 in terms of overall speed but its a far cry from what came before it. Much like previous generations, its likely that Microsoft will continue to innovate the user interface in forthcoming years, but right now I feel its in a good place.

Xbox Series X Review: Final Thoughts And Summary
The Xbox Series X is a spectacular console. Every aspect of it is dripping with the love of a massive team that clearly cared about every millimeter, every line of code that was poured into this monolithic whole. Waiting for the full-blown feature set of RDNA 2 may cost Microsoft the sales race in Q4, but for those who are lucky enough to get their hands on it, the Xbox Series X is console gaming at its most excellent and most refined.
Xbox Series X is console gaming at its most excellent and most refined.
In terms of the ecosystem the Xbox Series X is attached to, Microsoft has struggled to change the narrative over its exclusive game offering, but that’s beginning to change. A tidal wave of investment has brought the entire ZeniMax portfolio exclusively under Xbox, alongside a robust lineup of satellite studios which include heavyweights like Obsidian, Playground, 343i, and many more.
The backward-compatibility effort on the Xbox Series X cannot be understated for its meticulousness and execution. Thousands upon thousands of games are launching with this console, from your favorite service-type experiences like Rocket League and Fortnite, to single-player classics like DOOM and Fallout 4. Hundreds of games are effectively getting free “remaster” treatment, boosted to their maximum resolutions and frame rates thanks to the forward-looking design of the Xbox ecosystem architecture.

Quick Resume Acts Like The Ultimate Pause Button
Using their fast storage access, the Xbox Series X and Series S allow you to suspend almost any game by creating a snapshot of it in system memory. You can then start another game, watch a movie, or even turn off and completely unplug your console. The next time you start the game in question, itll pick up exactly where you left off. Its a lot like switching between open apps on a smartphone, and you can do it with several games at once. Games already boot up faster on the new consoles because of their storage speed, and if youre playing more than one thing, switching between games using quick resume saves a lot of time and frustration because you skip any menus and save/load screens that you might otherwise be forced to navigate. And in the few months weve been using the console, every time we boot up a game for the first time in weeks only to load up exactly where we left off in seconds is a delightful experience.
Initially, Quick Resume support was somewhat spotty, with several games encountering problems with the feature but recent patches have improved overall stability, though there are still occasional, unavoidable issues. For titles like the 2018 remaster of Dark Souls, which uses an always online server system, Quick Resume just about always results in a server disconnect, which will boot you to the title screen .
