The History Of The Xbox
The original Xbox launched late in 2001, nearly nineteen years ago. A lot has changed with the brand since then, bringing more power, more exclusives, and more value to consumers around the world. Now, the brand is set to reimagine itself yet again when the Xbox Series X releases this holiday season.
But before we move forward, why not take a look back at what brought us here in the first place? Xbox has a storied history what started out as a simple project has evolved into one of the most profitable gaming brands in the entire industry and it might help us figure out what we can expect from the company moving forward.
Pc Perks In The Living Room
While Microsoft makes you pay to unlock some features, it does include some PC-like ones that can’t be found in competing systems. First, there’s a built-in Ethernet adapter for broadband multiplayer gaming, regardless of whether you’re using a cable modem, DSL or an office LAN. For an extra $50, you can buy Microsoft’s Xbox Live Starter Kit, which allows you to play games online free for a year. Several, but not all, titles are Xbox Live-enabled.
Back then, not everyone had broadband. You might have had to go to your office to use broadband. So it was one of those things where Microsoft was really thinking of the future. Yes, there were online game services before, Compuserve or nonsense like that, and the Dreamcast had a 56k modem. At first Xbox Live was free — it was like Microsoft was saying, “Your first taste is free. Just try it out and see what you think.” And then it started adding features and eventually said, if you want to play multiplayer, this is what you need. And by that point, the company justified it by making it a more robust experience. It realized the future is in owning the network that supports everything.

What About Xbox Series S
Codenamed Project Lockhart, the Xbox Series S, is the cheaper, digital-only alternative to the new Xbox Series X.
The lower-cost console had been rumoured for a while along with the disc-less feature, and faster CPU. Think PS4 Pro without the disc dive. Microsoft has said that Xbox Series X will be part of a family of consoles and it seems they were true to their word.

Why Is There A Shortage Of Ps5
Part of the reason why getting your hands on a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, or high-end PC hardware is so difficult is due to a global computer chip shortage. This came about due to the sudden surge in demand for electronic entertainment while people were stuck at home shielding from the coronavirus.

The Next X And The End Of An Era
On May 12, 2005, Microsoft unveiled the Xbox 360, the next generation of its gaming console. With plans to release the 360 in November, the company clearly hoped that an early debut almost a full year before the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii were scheduled to arrive would put the 360 in a good position to dominate the market. It also meant the writing was on the wall for the original Xbox.
Later that year, production of the Xbox officially ceased, with the final tally of sold consoles sitting at around 24 million units. While this was nothing to scoff at, the number fell far short of Microsofts initial prediction of 50 million Xbox consoles in households around the world. It was nowhere near the sales totals of the PS2, which went on to sell over 153 million units, but the Xbox did outsell both Nintendos GameCube , and Segas Dreamcast . The last game produced for the Xbox in North America, Madden 09, was released in August 2008, and support for the system was discontinued in March 2009. The final nail in the consoles coffin was hammered on April 14, 2010, with Xbox Live access eliminated for the original Xbox.

Xbox Series X And Series S Controller
The fourth generation Xbox Controller doesn’t change much from the Xbox One controller, but the new wireless Xbox Controller does add a capture and share button, a hybrid d-pad, and better gripping on the bumpers and triggers. The controller is also promised to be cross compatible with certain PC’s and mobile devices.
Third Generation: Xbox One
The Xbox One was released on November 22, 2013 in North America, as the successor of the Xbox 360. The Xbox One competes with Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s Wii U and Switch as part of the eighth generation of video game consoles.
Announced on May 21, 2013, the Xbox One has an emphasis on internet-based features, including the ability to record and stream gameplay, and the ability to integrate with a set-top box to watch cable or satellite TV through the console with an enhanced guide interface and Kinect-based voice control.
On June 13, 2016, Microsoft announced the Xbox One S at E3 2016, which featured a smaller form factor, as well as support for 4K video and HDR. At E3 2017, Microsoft unveiled Xbox One X, a high-end model with improved hardware designed to facilitate the playing of games at 4K resolution.
Since November 2014, Microsoft has stated it will not release sales numbers for the Xbox One line. Industry estimates project global sales of the Xbox One family to be about 51 million units. Xbox head Phil Spencer said that while they do internally track sales figures, they do not want their developers to be focused on these numbers as to affect their products, and thus have opted not to report further sales of Xbox hardware going forward.

The End Of The Xbox One Family
Microsoft refers to the Xbox One, the S, and the X as part of one Xbox Family. This means that you can play your games on any one of these consoles and use your accessories on each of them too. No one gets left behind.
Its pretty exciting, especially when you look at the effort Microsoft has put into backwards compatibility. With a huge selection of Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles available to play on the current generation, the plan is to keep this compatibility moving forward.
Can they do it? Will they be able to transition to the Xbox 2 and still keep everything backwards compatible? If anyone can do it, its them. With Phil Spencer at the head of the charge, the possibilities are endless.
Come check out our page on The End of the Xbox One to see how we believe Microsoft will make this important transition into the future.

Xbox Series X Specs: What Do We Know About The Xbox Series X
With these specs, the Xbox Series X will be the most powerful console that Microsoft have ever produced and will go head-to-head with Sonys brand new PS5 for the Christmas 2020 market. It is worth noting that while the console will have 1TB of storage space, some of that will be taken up with the system already so expect to have around 802GB remaining for games and other downloads.
But, if you already have games stored on an external hard drive to play on your current Xbox console, they will play straight away on the Series X which is definitely handy!
Like the PS5, Microsoft will be adding an SSD capability for storage, but will also have a physical drive for games.
It is also understood that current Xbox One peripherals like the controllers will work on the new Series X.
People who have been lucky enough to get hold of a console, even if they are not the final versions, have been making some interesting findings as they have been playing them. One of the main things we are hearing is how quiet it is- which is sure to be a relief for those who dont like hearing the whirring of a console as they are working their way through a game.
It has also been said that it kicks out a surprising amount of heat when it is switched on. It does sound like that is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about, but its handy to know if you get yours and start to worry about how hot it is getting.

More than 25 years ago, Sony unleashed its first PlayStation, barging into a marketplace dominated by Nintendo and, to a lesser extent, Sega. And seven years later, Microsoft brought forth its Xbox. … In comparison, the PlayStation 4 has sold more than 113.5 million since its arrival seven years ago.
Second Generation: Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 was released as the successor of the original Xbox in November 2005, competing with Sony‘s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo‘s Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. As of June 2014, 84 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold worldwide. The Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005, with detailed launch and game information divulged later that month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo . The console sold out completely upon release in all regions except in Japan. Several retail configurations of the core Xbox 360 model were offered over its lifetime, varying the amount of RAM and internal storage offered.
The Xbox 360 showed an expanded Xbox Live service , the ability to stream multimedia content from PCs, while later updates added the ability to purchase and stream music, television programs, and films through the Xbox Music and Xbox Video services, along with access to third-party content services through third-party media streaming applications. Microsoft also released Kinect, a motion control system for the Xbox 360 which uses an advanced sensor system.
The second major revision of the Xbox 360 was the Xbox 360 E, released in 2013. It featured a case style similar to the upcoming Xbox One, and eliminated one USB port and the S/PDIF, YPbPr component and S-video connections, but otherwise shared the same specifications as the Xbox 360 S.

Xbox Two Release Date This Year Or Delayed To 2020
Microsoft is reportedly developing a new console, code-named the Xbox Two, to compete with the next-generation gaming consoles, namely Sonyâs PlayStation 4.5 NEO and Nintendoâs NX.
While the Xbox Two has not yet been officially announced, Xbox head Phil Spencer has briefly talked about the companyâs plans for an upgraded console.
âIâm not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If weâre going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers. For us, our box is doing well. It performs, its reliable, the servers are doing well. If weâre going to move forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people â an upgrade,â Spencer revealed.
Rumors suggest that the Xbox Twoâs upgraded features will include support for 4K gaming. It will also have the backward compatibility feature so that game titles from previous console generations can still be played. Given the boom in the virtual reality landscape, Microsoft is also rumored to incorporate VR technologies into their new gaming console.
The Xbox Two may also come with increased and improved Windows 10 integration. Microsoft has already taken the first steps in developing a universal platform for all Microsoft products. The Xbox Two may come with a more streamlined user interface that will make gaming, streaming, and downloading easier.

A New Toy And A New Look
In both 2009 and 2010, June proved to be an important month for the 360. First, the motion- and voice-control peripheral that would eventually become Kinect was announced in June 2009 at that years E3 convention. Originally labeled Project Natal , the device was expected to revolutionize the way 360 owners interacted with both their console and the media connected with it. The Kinect arrived on shelves in November of that year.
One year after the Kinect was announced, Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 would be getting a major redesign, with a thinner body, upgraded internal specs, additional USB ports, and built-in Wi-Fi. The Xbox 360 S hit shelves a few days later on June 18, 2010.

Everything Microsoft Did Wrong With The Xbox One
Microsoft did very well for itself during the seventh generation of video game consoles, as the Xbox 360 went on to become a strong seller around the world. The companyâs Xbox Live service dominated multiplayer gaming with megahits like Halo3 and Gears of War. Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 became the console that most reviewers tested games on, and many other games or DLC came to the console first in timed exclusive windows .
All around, the Seattle tech giant went into the eighth generation of consoles in 2013 with the wind at its back. The new Xbox, jokingly called the 720 before its announcement, was expected to be a heavy challenger to the new PlayStation, if not an outright generation winner. But when the new console was finally revealed as the Xbox One, nothing went Microsoftâs way. In the end, the new Xbox One got off to a rocky start. Some of the issues were avoidable, others were innovations that came too early, and still others were just plain bad ideas. Any one or two of them might not have been too bad, but all together, Microsoft found itself facing the full might of the gaming communityâs wrath. Hereâs everything Microsoft did wrong with the Xbox One.
