Xbox Series X Review: Controller

Xbox Series X Unboxing!

Ever since Microsoft came up with the Xbox 360 controller, Ive been a fan of the Xbox controllers, and the new Xbox Wireless Controller is a neat evolution of its predecessor. Though glance at the peripheral, and youd be hard-pressed to spot any major differences from the Xbox One controller.

But thats not a bad thing, as its a fantastic controller. Small improvements like textured triggers and an improved D-pad take a familiar controller and simply make it better.

The Xbox Wireless Controller has long been one of the most comfortable controllers Ive used, taking the Xbox 360 controller and building upon it. And the same is true with the new controller, though it does have a few extra features.

From a quick glance, the most notable change is the addition of a share button for sharing screenshots and recordings with a simple tap. Youll then notice that the D-pad is a hybrid one: a concave disk that should deliver more precision, particularly if you play traditional beat-em-ups. The finish on the new controller has a more matte look, with the black appearing smokier. The Xbox button is also now all-black.

The new controller fits my hands almost exactly like its predecessor. The triggers are slightly smaller and feel a little more tactile, as do the shoulder buttons. And the joysticks have a firmer, more satisfying click to them than those on the older controller.

Why Did Xbox Get Released Before Ps5 Microsoft Bets Two

People who preordered the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S get a slight window this week to gloat over those who are getting the PlayStation 5.

Microsoft is releasing its console on Tuesday, while Sony is waiting until Thursday. That’s not a big difference, or one that will be remembered for long, but it might feel like ages to antsy gamers anxious to try out their new systems.

After the PlayStation 4 destroyed the Xbox One in sales, Microsoft wants every advantage it can get this time around. A two-day head start is a possible momentum builder entering the holiday season, building chatter and social media gameplay content 48 hours early.

Below is a look at the release date difference in 2020, and how it compares to previous generations:

About That Horsepower: On Paper The Xbox One X Is The Most Technically Capable Home Gaming Console In Existence Here’s A Look At The Nitty

Eight custom x86 cores clocked at 2.3 GHz.

Six teraflops of graphics performance by comparison, the PS4 Pro has 4.2 teraflops, the standard Xbox One has 1.31 teraflops, and the standard PlayStation 4 has 1.84 teraflops.

Twelve GB of GDDR5 RAM every other current Xbox and PlayStation console has 8 GB.

A 1 TB hard drive for storing all your games. It appears this will not be upgradeable, however.

Dolby Atmos audio, which lends richer sound to compatible games. The Xbox One S supports this too, though.

If all of this sounds like gibberish to you, that’s OK. The differences here are largely in maximum computing power most eyes aren’t going to notice dramatic differences all the time, the way you would if you were going from a PlayStation 2 to a PlayStation 4. The games will probably be gorgeous, but so are lots of modern video games.

Still, the Xbox One X should have less trouble with heavy-duty games than its peers. Microsoft is promising faster load times, and more games should use the extra power to boost draw distances and other fine details over time it’s still a stronger computer than the competition.

Xbox One X review: A surprising amount of power in a very ...

Although the Xbox One X is many times more powerful than the current Xbox One, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has stated that the Scorpio will have no exclusive games, meaning that any games that are made with the Xbox One X in mind must also be made for the inferior computing power of the Xbox One.

In addition to this, the Xbox One X will be fully backwards compatible with the Xbox 360, meaning that any current and future titles that Microsoft incorporate into the backwards compatibility scheme will be added to the library of games featured on the Xbox One X. At E3 Microsoft also confirmed a new backwards compatibility program for original Xbox games, including Crimson Skies.

You can see how the Xbox One X enhances standard, non-patched games in the video below produced by Digital Foundry.

In the months following the initial reveal of the Xbox Scorpio, Microsoft announced that the Scorpio would be sharing a user interface with the current Xbox One, meaning apps, Cortana, and background music will all be arriving on the new console when it eventually launches.

Microsofts E3 2017 presentation was heavy on games, with the platform holder doing a good job at demonstrating that the Xbox is a platform that isnt short of impressive titles.

Doesn’t The Cute White Xbox One S Already Do 4k

Yes and no. The Xbox One S can technically display 4K images to your TV, but that isn’t the same thing as rendering games at 4K.

Or, put more simply, you can watch 4K Blu-rays with an Xbox One S, but games won’t look much better.

Still, the One S does now support high dynamic range with a handful of games, which should mean better color saturation and contrast in those titles as long as you’ve got an HDR-compatible TV.

A Special Project Scorpio Edition Version Of The Console Was Briefly Available To Preorder Though

The “Project Scorpio Edition” Xbox One X was $499 at the usual retail channels, but supplies were extremely limited, and the model is now sold out.

If you couldn’t get your hands on one, don’t feel bad. This is the same as the normal Xbox One X under the hood it just has a couple of small engravings on the console and controller meant to celebrate the console’s launch and excite Microsoft’s most ardent fans.

Kinect For Xbox One And Decline

The Kinect release for the Xbox 360 was estimated to have sold eight million units in the first sixty days of release, earning the hardware the Guinness World Record for the “Fastest-Selling Consumer Electronics Device”. Over 10 million had been sold by March 2011. While seemingly successful, its launch titles were primarily family-oriented games , which may have drawn new audiences, but did not have the selling power of major franchises like Battlefield and which were primarily designed around the Xbox 360 controller. Only an estimated 20% of the 55 million Xbox 360 owners had purchased the Kinect. The Kinect team recognized some of the downsides with more traditional games and Kinect, and continued ongoing development of the unit to be released as a second-generation unit, such as reducing the latency of motion detection and improving speech recognition. Microsoft provided news of these changes to the third-party developers to help them anticipate how the improvements can be integrated into the games.

Microsoft formally announced it would stop manufacture of the Kinect for Xbox One on October 25, 2017. Microsoft eventually discontinued the adapter in January 2018, stating that they were shifting to manufacture other accessories for the Xbox One and personal computers that were more in demand. This is considered by the media to be the point where Microsoft forgone any further work on the Kinect for the Xbox platform.

I Made This: Xbox One Launch Team Limited Edition

This variant of the Xbox One was produced for launch and distributed exclusively to select Microsoft employees that worked on the console. Without distinct limited edition consoles until late 2014, the device came in an exclusive glossy white, with “I Made This, Launch Team 2013” on the controller and console itself. With these consoles extremely limited to a subset of employees, finding one on auction sites won’t be cheap.

Xbox One X: News Updates

– You can currently pick up the 1TB Xbox One X console for £386.91 , which is a marked price drop over its launch cost. FPS fans would probably be better off picking up the 1TB Xbox One X and Battlefield V bundle edition, though, which is ringing in for only £389. Spend a few more quid and get a top shooter to play on your new console.

Over on eBay refurbished models are going for between £300 and £350, while properly used systems with bundles of games can be picked up for a similar outlay. The much sort after white 1TB Xbox One X console, used, is still going for over £400, while the Project Scorpio Edition consoles range in price from £280 to £330 depending on condition and the amount of bundled games.

The successor to the Xbox One X, which has been dubbed the Xbox Two, is set for release no earlier than 2020, with one rumour indicating that both Sony and Microsoft will pit their new consoles against each other at E3 2020. That would be where they could be announced, though, with a release taking place later in 2020, likely in the run up to Christmas.

As such, we don’t expect a sudden price crash on the Xbox One X, as it still has plenty of time to run before a more powerful console can usurp its position.

Kinect For Xbox 360 Marketing And Launch

During Microsoft’s E3 2010 press conference, it was announced that Project Natal would be officially branded as Kinect, and be released in North America on November 4, 2010. Xbox Live director Stephen Toulouse stated that the name was a portmanteau of the words “kinetic” and “connection”, key aspects of the Kinect initiative. Microsoft and third-party studios exhibited Kinect-compatible games during the E3 exhibition. A new slim revision of the Xbox 360 was also unveiled to coincide with Kinect’s launch, which added a dedicated port for attaching the peripheral Kinect would be sold at launch as a standalone accessory for existing Xbox 360 owners, and as part of bundles with the new slim Xbox 360. All units included Kinect Adventures as a pack-in game.

Microsoft continued to refine the Kinect technology in the months leading to the Kinect launch in November 2010. By launch, Kipman reported they had been able to reduce the Kinect’s use of the Xbox 360’s processor from 10 to 15% as reported in January 2010 to a “single-digit percentage”.

For The Fans: Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition

Microsoft first discussed the Xbox One X at E3 2016, under its codename, “Project Scorpio.” Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition pays homage to this journey, with a limited edition console design sporting the branding. The most outstanding trait of the console is its two-tone gray and black gradient, with sharp green text above the disc tray. A unique Xbox One controller design and an official vertical stand also ship with this bundle.
