Except for its lower price the One S All-Digital Edition doesn’t have any advantages over the more powerful One X. However, questions remain, namely how low will the prices for both consoles go, and how much is the One X’s extra power worth to you? It will also be interesting to see what new game bundles crop up and whether Microsoft offers a better deal on its upcoming Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, a subscription service that includes Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold for $15 a month. That $180 per year price is the same as what you’d pay if you bought each separately and combined them.

System Software And Features

Both consoles feature a similar user interface to the Xbox One, but there has been a 40% reduction in memory use to improve its speed. According to the UI development team, the Home section loads in about half the time as it did on the Xbox One. Other changes include adding rounded UI elements, a more-readable font for text elements, rearrangement of certain aligned features, and improvements to the sharing functions. These changes were brought to the Xbox One system software, the Windows’ Xbox application, and the Xbox mobile application around September 2020. Based on system previews, about 200 GB of space was reserved on the internal drive of the Xbox Series X for system files.

The console’s Quick Resume feature will allow users to suspend and resume more than one game at a time, and also resume suspended games after a reboot of the console.

Several video and streaming media services will be available through the system software on the consoles’ launch notably, it will be the first time that Apple TV+ will be available on Xbox consoles.

Microsoft plans to migrate the xCloud service from Xbox One S-based blade servers to Xbox Series X-based systems by 2021.

The Xbox Game Preview program, which allows games to be released through an early access model, continued into the Xbox Series X/S line with Spacebase Startopia as the first such title offered under the program in January 2021.

Other Games And Media

Krafton had looked to expand PUBG beyond the core game as to expand the narrative universe. As part of this, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was quietly rebranded as PUBG Battlegrounds around July 2021.

Starting in 2020, Krafton released a series of live-action documentaries starring Jonathan Frakes that explored the origins of the game’s Battlegrounds. Ahead of the game’s Taego expansion in July 2021, Krafton released another live-action short called “Ground Zero”, featuring Ma Dong-seok .

Krafton announced a partnership with Adi Shankar in July 2021 to develop an animated series based on the PUBG universe.

In 2019, Krafton created a new studio Striking Distance, helmed by Glen Schofield, who previously led development on the Dead Space series. In 2020, Schofield revealed that the studio was working on The Callisto Protocol, a game set in the PUBG universe but in the far future, taking place on a prison colony established on Jupiter’s moon .

The Next X And The End Of An Era

On May 12, 2005, Microsoft unveiled the Xbox 360, the next generation of its gaming console. With plans to release the 360 in November, the company clearly hoped that an early debut almost a full year before the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii were scheduled to arrive would put the 360 in a good position to dominate the market. It also meant the writing was on the wall for the original Xbox.

Later that year, production of the Xbox officially ceased, with the final tally of sold consoles sitting at around 24 million units. While this was nothing to scoff at, the number fell far short of Microsofts initial prediction of 50 million Xbox consoles in households around the world. It was nowhere near the sales totals of the PS2, which went on to sell over 153 million units, but the Xbox did outsell both Nintendos GameCube , and Segas Dreamcast . The last game produced for the Xbox in North America, Madden 09, was released in August 2008, and support for the system was discontinued in March 2009. The final nail in the consoles coffin was hammered on April 14, 2010, with Xbox Live access eliminated for the original Xbox.

Emphasis On Home Entertainment

Revisão do Xbox One S

The Xbox 360 was always more than just a game console: it could play DVDs, it could run apps like Netflix or Hulu, and it could even be used as a music player. For the new Xbox One, Microsoft decided to expand on that notion so far that they tried to reposition the device as more of a home entertainment hub than a mere gaming system. At the console’s reveal event, Microsoft spent much of its time unveiling non-gaming features, such as the ability to receive a cable TV signal, and to either play TV directly or splitscreen alongside another app. It could even record live TV and offered a navigation menu for channels. Meanwhile, it could connect to speakers and be used as a stereo replacement as well.

There was comparatively little emphasis on games. While Remedy Entertainment’s Quantum Break was announced at the event , the rest of the gaming reveals were all the usual list of suspects: , Forza, and FIFA. Not bad games by any means, but they were the expected ones. Did anybody really think that wouldn’t be on the new Xbox? Microsoft found it hard to drum up excitement over what people already knew.

Does Xbox 360 Still Have Online 2021

What are you announcing? Effective April 21, 2021, all Xbox players can access online multiplayer for free-to-play games on their console at no charge. For these games, an Xbox Live Gold subscription is no longer needed. You’ll be able to download and play online entirely for free on your Xbox console.

Xbox Series S Review: Interface

If youve used the Xbox One interface, then youve used the Xbox Series S interface. Thats not me playing coy its simply an observation. While Microsoft has updated the Xbox storefront over the past few months, the actual interface hasnt changed significantly in years.

When you boot up the console, youll still see a Home screen with all of your most recent games and activities. When you scroll down, youll still see Store, Media and Game Pass options. Hit the Xbox button on the controller, and youll be able to navigate through your games and apps, see your full library, see system notifications, manage your friends list, view your Achievements, access settings and so forth.

Theres not much point in describing the Xbox Series S interface in exhaustive detail, since youve almost certainly seen it before. Its not an especially pretty interface, but it does take you where you need to go with relatively little friction, especially once you learn your way around. If youve used the Xbox One within the past few years, youll be able to dive right in, which is a plus.

What the Xbox Series S interface lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for in utility especially when you consider just how many games you can access via Xbox Game Pass on two different console generations, as well as PCs and mobile devices.

Is Xbox One S Good For Movies And Tv

Although the original Xbox One was pitched as a cohesive media device, the Xbox One S delivers major improvements for movies and TV. With the addition of HDMI 2.0 support, the console can output native 4K 60Hz video, paired with HDR. This delivers the best possible image across select media when paired with a top-end display.

The Xbox One S also packs a 4K HDR Blu-ray player, which is currently absent from all PlayStation 4 consoles in 2019. Standalone 4K Blu-ray players are priced similarly to the Xbox One S, making it viable for media consumption only.

A growing collection of services also offer 4K playback on Xbox One S, including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, and more. Alternatively, users can access digital UHD content served via the Microsoft Store, despite the weak library.

Initial Unveiling And Launch

Prior to the official unveiling, a rumor had circulated that the next Xbox console would be an “always on” system requiring a persistent Internet connection, though Microsoft had not confirmed this. This had drawn some concerns from consumers, which were heightened when Microsoft Studios employee Adam Orth stated in a message in April 2013 that said, “Sorry, I don’t get the drama around having an ‘always on’ console…Every device now is ‘always on.’ That’s the world we live in. #dealwithit”. Orth’s message drew further ire towards Microsoft, with concerns about digital rights management and practices against the sale of used games with an “always on” unit. Orth opted to leave Microsoft a few days later due to the backlash. Despite Microsoft’s statements following the situation, denying the rumors, the mood it created lingered over the next several months.

In response to these pre-launch changes and a belief that Microsoft’s initial decisions for the console were in poor judgement, journalists and consumers jokingly gave the Xbox One nicknames such as the “Xbox 180”, in reference to the Xbox 360 and Microsoft’s decision to reverse its controversial decisions, and “Xbone”, suggesting that the company was “throwing a bone” to consumers by making these changes.

Everything New Is Old Again

Given the four years between the release of the first Xbox and the arrival of its successor, its no surprise that after six years rumors began circulating in March 2011 that the 360 was on its way out and Microsoft was already hard at work on its next console. The first set of reports surfaced on LinkedIn, where several designers and developers added vague descriptions of a mysterious new project they were working on with Microsoft. There was no stopping the Internet rumor train once it started chugging along, and before long the new console even had an unofficial code name: Xbox 720.

Even with the next-generation rumors, sales of the 360 continued to assert Microsofts powerful position in the console gaming industry, and by September 2012 the company announced that it had hit the 70-million mark in units sold, and by December that number had jumped to 75 million. Although the sales of the 360 trailed behind Nintendos Wii, which sold close to 100 million, it outsold the Ps3 by around 5 million. This news was followed a month later by the debut of Xbox Music and Xbox Video, Microsofts new media services that not only replaced the existing services on the Xbox but also offered an attractive, Apple-style integration across all devices running Windows software.

The Original Xbox One

First released in 2014 as Microsofts entry for the eighth console generation, the original Xbox One remains a powerful piece of kit.

However, since the introduction of the One S in 2016, the original console is becoming harder to find as retailers run through their stock. Interestingly, although the original console has largely been replaced, youre still likely to get a better deal on a One S.

  • Can the original One do anything the One S cant? – In a word, no. Theres no real reason to buy an original One unless you find an exceptional deal. With stock running low of the original, thats becoming increasingly unlikely.
  • Should I upgrade my One to a One S?– This is a tough one. While an improvement in multiple departments, the One S isnt so much of an leap forward that it necessitates upgrading. Both systems play the same games, so you wont miss out there. If you upgraded to an HDR TV and wanted to enjoy the difference it makes to your graphics, it would perhaps justify upgrading to a One S.

The Enemy

The Xbox SmartGlassapp provides extended functionality on Xbox One, allowing devices running Windows Phone, Windows 8, iOS and Android to be used as a companion device for Xbox One features, such as powering on the console, a remote control, accessing messages and the Activity Feed, purchasing content, and providing integration with certain games and content. The SmartGlass app can also be used to stream live television to Android and Windows devices if the console is using a USB digital television tuner.

On Windows 10, SmartGlass is succeeded by the Xbox App, which supports the local streaming of games from Xbox One to personal computers and tablets running Windows 10. An Xbox One controller must be used, but Windows-compatible headsets and microphones can be used for voice chat. Games requiring Kinect are not supported, while Game DVR and online streaming are not available while using this functionality.

Per a partnership with Oculus VR, users will also be able to stream Xbox One games to the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset by means of Xbox app for Windows 10 as of 2015 there were no immediate plans for direct integration between Xbox One and Oculus Rift.

Xbox Series S Vs Xbox One S Verdict

With comparative price points and similar sleek designs, the Xbox Series S and Xbox One S are easily mistaken at a glance. Delve deeper, though, and the power gap between Microsofts two cheap consoles become abundantly clear.

The Xbox One S will soon be seen as a legacy system, unable to provide the next-gen bells and whistles like ray-tracing and blazing fast load times, but its a tempting value proposition nonetheless, particularly if you can find a good Xbox One S deal.

The Xbox Series S, however, is the console of choice for those looking to experience the next-generation of gaming at a superb price point. Its digital-only, of course, so youll be at the mercy of your internet connection when it comes to downloading games. If thats a problem, the Xbox Series X might be the next best choice.
