Enter The Xbox One S All

Microsoft has unveiled the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, it’s latest low-cost Xbox console. Doubling down on game downloads, the new console cuts $50 off entry-level Xbox one consoles by stripping down the console to its essential components and taking out the disc drive.

The Xbox One S All-Digital is primed for the modern online world, backed by Microsoft’s ever-growing integrated Microsoft Store for games, movies, TV, and more. Paired with Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft’s Netflix-style subscription service with over 100 games, the console is ideal for the convivence of digital landscape. While losing out on the benefits of physical media, it’s an overall promising addition filling a new hole in the Xbox lineup.

The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition retains a familiar white and black design, now streamlined without the drive and eject button. The console promises otherwise identical capabilities, including shared features, performance, games, and accessories with the existing Xbox One S from 2016. It merely acts as the latest entry-point into the Xbox gaming ecosystem, now at a lower price than ever before.

Xbox Series X Price Vs Playstation 5 Price

After many leaks and speculation, Sony confirmed the PS5 Digital and PS5 prices at £360 and £450 respectively. That came as a pleasant surprise to those who’d expected the PS5 to be priced much higher than the rival;Xbox Series X.

As it turns out, the full-fat PS5 and Xbox Series X cost the same, although the all-digital Series S undercuts the PS5 Digital Edition by a fair margin of £90 .

Bear in mind, however, that the Xbox Series S is less powerful than the Series X, whereas the PS5 Digital Edition is identical to the standard PS5 except for the lack of a disc drive.

System Software And Features

Xbox Series S release date, price and specs

Both consoles feature a similar user interface to the Xbox One, but there has been a 40% reduction in memory use to improve its speed. According to the UI development team, the Home section loads in about half the time as it did on the Xbox One. Other changes include adding rounded UI elements, a more-readable font for text elements, rearrangement of certain aligned features, and improvements to the sharing functions. These changes were brought to the Xbox One system software, the Windows’ Xbox application, and the Xbox mobile application around September 2020. Based on system previews, about 200;GB of space was reserved on the internal drive of the Xbox Series X for system files.

The console’s Quick Resume feature will allow users to suspend and resume more than one game at a time, and also resume suspended games after a reboot of the console.

Several video and streaming media services will be available through the system software on the consoles’ launch; notably, it will be the first time that Apple TV+ will be available on Xbox consoles.

Microsoft plans to migrate the xCloud service from Xbox One S-based blade servers to Xbox Series X-based systems by 2021.

The Xbox Game Preview program, which allows games to be released through an early access model, continued into the Xbox Series X/S line with Spacebase Startopia as the first such title offered under the program in January 2021.

Xbox Series S Specs And Features What’s Different

Microsoft’s best Xbox One and PC games coming out this spring

The first thing to note is that the Xbox Series S is much cheaper, at £249/$299.

That’s because it’s an all-digital console with no disc tray keeping costs down.

Sony has already offered up much the same with its new PS5, which comes in non-digital and digital variants.

And Microsoft arguably spearheaded this trend with its all-digital Xbox One S, which came out last year.

So it’s really no surprise that the Xbox Series S exists.

Microsoft’s cheaper model still stands vertically, but looks to be about half the width.

And rather than being all-black like the Series X, the Series S has a white design with a large dark circle on its front.

The History Of The Xbox

The original Xbox launched late in 2001, nearly nineteen years ago. A lot has changed with the brand since then, bringing more power, more exclusives, and more value to consumers around the world. Now, the brand is set to reimagine itself yet again when the Xbox Series X releases this holiday season.

But before we move forward, why not take a look back at what brought us here in the first place? Xbox has a storied history what started out as a simple project has evolved into one of the most profitable gaming brands in the entire industry and it might help us figure out what we can expect from the company moving forward.

Second Generation: Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 was released as the successor of the original Xbox in November 2005, competing with Sony‘s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo‘s Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. As of June 2014, 84 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold worldwide. The Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005, with detailed launch and game information divulged later that month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo . The console sold out completely upon release in all regions except in Japan. Several retail configurations of the core Xbox 360 model were offered over its lifetime, varying the amount of RAM and internal storage offered.

The Xbox 360 showed an expanded Xbox Live service , the ability to stream multimedia content from PCs, while later updates added the ability to purchase and stream music, television programs, and films through the Xbox Music and Xbox Video services, along with access to third-party content services through third-party media streaming applications. Microsoft also released Kinect, a motion control system for the Xbox 360 which uses an advanced sensor system.

The second major revision of the Xbox 360 was the Xbox 360 E, released in 2013. It featured a case style similar to the upcoming Xbox One, and eliminated one USB port and the S/PDIF, YPbPr component and S-video connections, but otherwise shared the same specifications as the Xbox 360 S.

Second Screen And Streaming

The Xbox SmartGlassapp provides extended functionality on Xbox One, allowing devices running Windows Phone, Windows 8, iOS and Android to be used as a companion device for Xbox One features, such as powering on the console, a remote control, accessing messages and the Activity Feed, purchasing content, and providing integration with certain games and content. The SmartGlass app can also be used to stream live television to Android and Windows devices if the console is using a USB digital television tuner.

On Windows 10, SmartGlass is succeeded by the Xbox App, which supports the local streaming of games from Xbox One to personal computers and tablets running Windows 10. An Xbox One controller must be used, but Windows-compatible headsets and microphones can be used for voice chat. Games requiring Kinect are not supported, while Game DVR and online streaming are not available while using this functionality.

Per a partnership with Oculus VR, users will also be able to stream Xbox One games to the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset by means of Xbox app for Windows 10; as of 2015 there were no immediate plans for direct integration between Xbox One and Oculus Rift.

Initial Unveiling And Launch

PS5 vs Xbox Series X: 3 reasons you should care about ...

Prior to the official unveiling, a rumor had circulated that the next Xbox console would be an “always on” system requiring a persistent Internet connection, though Microsoft had not confirmed this. This had drawn some concerns from consumers, which were heightened when Microsoft Studios employee Adam Orth stated in a message in April 2013 that said, “Sorry, I don’t get the drama around having an ‘always on’ console…Every device now is ‘always on.’ That’s the world we live in. #dealwithit”. Orth’s message drew further ire towards Microsoft, with concerns about digital rights management and practices against the sale of used games with an “always on” unit. Orth opted to leave Microsoft a few days later due to the backlash. Despite Microsoft’s statements following the situation, denying the rumors, the mood it created lingered over the next several months.

In response to these pre-launch changes and a belief that Microsoft’s initial decisions for the console were in poor judgement, journalists and consumers jokingly gave the Xbox One nicknames such as the “Xbox 180”, in reference to the Xbox 360 and Microsoft’s decision to reverse its controversial decisions, and “Xbone”, suggesting that the company was “throwing a bone” to consumers by making these changes.

Microsoft Announces The Release Date For The Xbox One S But Only The Most Expensive Version

The next mini-generation of gaming consoles is officially on its way to our living rooms. Microsoft announced a launch date Monday for one of its Xbox One S models. The console, which packs a whopping 2 TB of storage, will be available in stores starting Aug. 2 for $400.

The $400 console is the most expensive of the three Xbox One S models;that Microsoft unveiled last month.;Deciding to announce the release of the;most expensive model;first;is a little puzzling, particularly when press coverage of its $300 model was so extensive. ;But perhaps demand for the $400 model was high enough since it packs a lot of storage that Microsoft wanted to release it first.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Xbox One S is the mid-generation upgrade of the;nearly three-year-old Xbox One. It’s 40 percent smaller, 4K-capable and has a comparatively cheaper launch price than the Xbox One’s launch price. It’s also white instead of black. ;When Microsoft first revealed the Xbox One S, it framed the decision to launch a refreshed console;as a way to offer consumers more feature and pricing choices.

“Different people have different things that may appeal to them,” said Dave McCarthy, general manager of Xbox Services, in a

“More details on the specific availability dates of these two options will be shared soon,” the company said in an official blog post.

Vr On Xbox: All The Options

There hasn’t been any mention of VR on the Xbox Series X, but with the success Sony has seen with PSVR, I wouldn’t rule it out.

On the one hand, Oculus Rift seemed like a solid choice, but then Microsoft announced its own line of Windows 10 VR headsets in late 2016.

What we do know, is that the headsets are being made by different manufacturers and will start at $300 for the base model. The entire line of headsets also supports inside-out tracking sensors which removes the need for a camera or external sensor.

These are different than the HoloLens, which is an augmented reality headset. For the time being, its assumed that these headsets will still be wired in nature. Current partners listed were HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer, so it stands to reason that one of these manufacturers are working on a variation of their Windows 10 headset for Xbox One X.

Some of these manufacturers are already working on headsets. Acer is working with Starbreeze to create the high-end line of StarVR headsets. Asus has a leather strapped headset, and AntVR is partnering with Lenovo for mobile VR setups.

Virtual reality and, by extension, augmented reality, are a growing industry. So far, the technology has been well-received and PlayStation’s VR solution is no slouch either.

Let’s say that Xbox Series X does get the Oculus Rift, or something equivalent. This is a first generation VR headset. It works great, but it’s the first step.
