What Made The Xbox 360 Popular

36 Facts About The Xbox 360 | How Many Do You Know?

Perhaps the first reason is its core market. Microsoft isnt trying to take on Nintendos more casual gamers. Instead, Microsoft has found a loyal following in the hardcore segment, where gamers like to play online, pick up shooters, and play for hours. To those gamers, the Xbox 360 is a device worthy of its success.

Everything New Is Old Again

Given the four years between the release of the first Xbox and the arrival of its successor, its no surprise that after six years rumors began circulating in March 2011 that the 360 was on its way out and Microsoft was already hard at work on its next console. The first set of reports surfaced on LinkedIn, where several designers and developers added vague descriptions of a mysterious new project they were working on with Microsoft. There was no stopping the Internet rumor train once it started chugging along, and before long the new console even had an unofficial code name: Xbox 720.

Even with the next-generation rumors, sales of the 360 continued to assert Microsofts powerful position in the console gaming industry, and by September 2012 the company announced that it had hit the 70-million mark in units sold, and by December that number had jumped to 75 million. Although the sales of the 360 trailed behind Nintendos Wii, which sold close to 100 million, it outsold the Ps3 by around 5 million. This news was followed a month later by the debut of Xbox Music and Xbox Video, Microsofts new media services that not only replaced the existing services on the Xbox but also offered an attractive, Apple-style integration across all devices running Windows software.

And Then The Red Ring Of Death

A few years into the console cycle, gamers started noticing that their Xbox 360 consoles were beginning to fail, almost in unison. The failure warning went on to become a notorious meme, dubbed the “Red Ring of Death,” or RROD for short. RROD consoles displayed a red circle around the power button, indicating a total system failure.

The RROD was a technological worst-case scenario for any electronics company. A smaller company might’ve been buried by it, too. Every single Xbox 360 consoles, practically, was susceptible to the Red Ring of Death, leading then-Xbox lead Peter Moore to request over a billion dollars from then-CEO Steve Ballmer to rectify the problem. Moore recounted the calamity in a previous interview :

“He said, ‘what’s it going to cost?’ I remember taking a deep breath, looking at Robbie, and saying, ‘we think it’s $1.15bn, Steve.’ He said, ‘do it.’ There was no hesitation. “I’m thinking, I’m about to crater Microsoft’s stock.””It was that moment of decision that Steve Ballmer made, that I will never forget. He didn’t even think twice about spending $1.15bn to protect a brand that’s probably worth three or four times that today. Xbox One wouldn’t have happened.”

    What Can The 360 Do

As well as gaming, the Xbox 360 can also be used for watching movies and listening to music.
