A Look Back At The Strengths Of The Og Xbox On Its 20th Birthday

20 years ago today, the original Xbox was released. Its a pretty big milestone for the entire gaming industry, because its hard to imagine console gaming without Xbox today. But back then it was pretty risky Microsoft was the first American firm to release a gaming system in eight years, and the company wasnt really well-known for being a game developer or publisher outside of the Flight Simulator series and built-in Windows games like Solitaire and Minesweeper.

Admittedly, the Xbox brand didnt really take off until the release of the 360 in 2005. But the OG Xbox made a pretty good showing for its first try, thanks to a solid lineup of games and no thanks to its enormous Duke controller. Today a few Engadget staffers would like to chime in with their cherished Xbox memories, ones that really highlight the strength of Microsofts first outing in the console world.

Microsoft would release a more advanced version of the popular Elite controller in 2019, known as the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. Sticking closely to the original design, the second version of the Elite controller added even more ways to customize the device. In addition to altering the analog sticks–letting users alter tension and pressure for each stick–the upgraded controller included Bluetooth support and multiple profile settings, which saved unique configurations for users. Taking cues from the Xbox One S controller, the Elite 2 also included Bluetooth functionality, offering users the means to connect with additional devices and pair to consoles and PC wirelessly.

Your Turn: A Brief History Of Microsoft And The Xbox

Microsoft was started in April of 1975 by William Henry “Bill” Gates III and Paul Allen. The company, which is still the largest software producer in the world, started its domination of the PC operating system market with MS DOS in the early 1980s. However, Microsoft actually started out developing BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800.

Before Microsoft got into the console market, they were well known for games. Some of the more memorable ones include Solitaire, which we have all played on PC at some point, and was originally included to teach people how to use a mouse . Microsoft Flight Simulator was, and still is, a very popular program with aviation aficionados. Bill Gates himself even programmed a game for early PC DOS called ‘Donkey’. It was a vertical driving game where you avoided donkeys. It . . . wasn’t very good.

The console that started it all for Microsoft, the original Xbox.

It wasn’t until the 21st Century that Microsoft wanted to develop its very own console.

The Xbox was launched it the US on November 15th 2001, then Japan, Europe and Australia in early 2002. Originally titled the ‘DirectX Box’, it was the first American-made console since the Atari Jaguar in the mid-90s. It was also the first console to have a built-in hard drive. It was primarily designed to compete with the Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, and GameCube.

The last game released for the original Xbox was Madden NFL ’09 and the best-selling game was, of course, Halo 2.

Recommended Component Video Cables:

Microsoft released official component video solutions that are high quality, however theyre no longer made, so you can only find them used. I link to eBay search results to help point you in the right direction, but please double check anything youre buying and make sure theyre either official Microsoft products, or from the other brands listed below.

Xbox Component Video HD PackMicrosoft released an HD Pack that allowed every resolution the Xbox supports, as well as SPDIF digital audio. Combining this with high quality component video cables will get you an excellent signal:

Xbox HD Pack: High Quality Component Video Cables:

Xbox Component Video CablesMicrosoft also released direct component video cables as well:

Other BrandsOther companies manufactured component video cables for the original Xbox, but the quality varied greatly! Some like the Monster Cables were known to be well shielded and provided a good signal, but most were unshielded, poor solutions. Also, all of the new options available weve tested showed both audio and video interference. Until we find a manufacturer thats consistently selling high quality cables, I can only recommend either buying a used Monster cable, or just buying a cheap one and hoping for the best:

Second Generation: Xbox 360

Xbox 360, 15 years later – 2021 Review

The Xbox 360 was released as the successor of the original Xbox in November 2005, competing with Sony‘s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo‘s Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. As of June 2014, 84 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold worldwide. The Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005, with detailed launch and game information divulged later that month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo . The console sold out completely upon release in all regions except in Japan. Several retail configurations of the core Xbox 360 model were offered over its lifetime, varying the amount of RAM and internal storage offered.

The Xbox 360 showed an expanded Xbox Live service , the ability to stream multimedia content from PCs, while later updates added the ability to purchase and stream music, television programs, and films through the Xbox Music and Xbox Video services, along with access to third-party content services through third-party media streaming applications. Microsoft also released Kinect, a motion control system for the Xbox 360 which uses an advanced sensor system.

The second major revision of the Xbox 360 was the Xbox 360 E, released in 2013. It featured a case style similar to the upcoming Xbox One, and eliminated one USB port and the S/PDIF, YPbPr component and S-video connections, but otherwise shared the same specifications as the Xbox 360 S.

Component To Hdmi Conversion

If you already own a high quality component video solution, or youd like the option to use your Xbox on both analog and digital displays, using a simple ADC is a great option. As long as you use an ADC that doesnt scale, this should be an inexpensive, zero lag solution thats compatible with all the resolutions the Xbox outputs.

Alternatively, the Open Source Scan Converter will accept all resolutions from the Xbox and convert them to HDMI. First, it has an automatic low-pass filter thatll clean up some analog noise from all resolutions. Next, itll deinterlace 480i to a zero lag 480p signal, pass through 720p and either passthrough or double 480p Please note that not all displays will be compatible with the doubled 960p signalBuying an OSSC just for Xbox support might be a bit overkill, but if youre also using it with other classic consoles, its an excellent choice:

An Xbox Console Retrospective

Before the original Xbox was released in 2001, many doubted Microsoft’s chances to compete in the video game console business. Up until that point, the company had been primarily a PC software vendor, and there hadn’t been room for four major consoles. It also had to compete against the PlayStation 2 and GameCube at the time. Despite the initial stiff competition and several pitfalls along the way, the Xbox brand has made significant strides over the past 15 years to become a household name in the hardware world and a significant pillar of Microsoft’s business. It has since sold well over 100 million consoles.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane as we chronologically look back at all of Microsoft’s consoles, hardware redesigns, and major peripherals.

Dude You’re Getting A Dell

While Bill Gates had been discussing the idea in meetings for some time, he was hesitant to go forward with a gaming console. Not because he didnt think it could be done, but because he feared that a failure of such a console would hurt the company brand. It didnt help matters that he didnt even know where to begin given that the company had never developed something of the like before.

He floated the idea of developing a console that was like a portable computer.

Wanting to compete with the upcoming PlayStation 2, a group of four Microsoft engineers from the DirectX team got to work. Ted Hase and Otto Berkes began the process by disassembling Dell laptop computers and piecing them together to create a Windows based gaming console. Their hope was to lure developers back to the Microsoft platform.

Third Generation: Xbox One

When Did The Original Xbox One Come Out

The Xbox One was released on November 22, 2013 in North America, as the successor of the Xbox 360. The Xbox One competes with Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s Wii U and Switch as part of the eighth generation of video game consoles.

Announced on May 21, 2013, the Xbox One has an emphasis on internet-based features, including the ability to record and stream gameplay, and the ability to integrate with a set-top box to watch cable or satellite TV through the console with an enhanced guide interface and Kinect-based voice control.

On June 13, 2016, Microsoft announced the Xbox One S at E3 2016, which featured a smaller form factor, as well as support for 4K video and HDR. At E3 2017, Microsoft unveiled Xbox One X, a high-end model with improved hardware designed to facilitate the playing of games at 4K resolution.

Since November 2014, Microsoft has stated it will not release sales numbers for the Xbox One line. Industry estimates project global sales of the Xbox One family to be about 51 million units. Xbox head Phil Spencer said that while they do internally track sales figures, they do not want their developers to be focused on these numbers as to affect their products, and thus have opted not to report further sales of Xbox hardware going forward.

According to the official Xbox Series X website, the new wireless controller will feature textured grips and triggers, an enhanced hybrid d-pad, and a standalone share button–allowing you to save screenshots and videos of your game sessions and upload them online. While the Xbox One had the option to share video and screenshots from your sessions, this is the first time an Xbox controller will have its own dedicated button for saving and sharing content on the controller for it. The newest controller will also feature continued USB and Bluetooth support, making it usable for PC and even the current Xbox One as well.

A New Toy And A New Look

In both 2009 and 2010, June proved to be an important month for the 360. First, the motion- and voice-control peripheral that would eventually become Kinect was announced in June 2009 at that years E3 convention. Originally labeled Project Natal , the device was expected to revolutionize the way 360 owners interacted with both their console and the media connected with it. The Kinect arrived on shelves in November of that year.

One year after the Kinect was announced, Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 would be getting a major redesign, with a thinner body, upgraded internal specs, additional USB ports, and built-in Wi-Fi. The Xbox 360 S hit shelves a few days later on June 18, 2010.

Pc Perks In The Living Room

While Microsoft makes you pay to unlock some features, it does include some PC-like ones that can’t be found in competing systems. First, there’s a built-in Ethernet adapter for broadband multiplayer gaming, regardless of whether you’re using a cable modem, DSL or an office LAN. For an extra $50, you can buy Microsoft’s Xbox Live Starter Kit, which allows you to play games online free for a year. Several, but not all, titles are Xbox Live-enabled.

Back then, not everyone had broadband. You might have had to go to your office to use broadband. So it was one of those things where Microsoft was really thinking of the future. Yes, there were online game services before, Compuserve or nonsense like that, and the Dreamcast had a 56k modem. At first Xbox Live was free — it was like Microsoft was saying, “Your first taste is free. Just try it out and see what you think.” And then it started adding features and eventually said, if you want to play multiplayer, this is what you need. And by that point, the company justified it by making it a more robust experience. It realized the future is in owning the network that supports everything.
