Fourth Generation: Xbox Series X And Series S
The fourth generation of Xbox models, simply named Xbox, includes the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S that launched on November 10, 2020. Both are considered members of the ninth generation of video game consoles alongside the PlayStation 5, also released that month.
The Xbox Series X and Series S are high- and low-end versions comparable to the Xbox One X and Xbox One S models, respectively, with all games designed for this model family playable on both systems. The Xbox Series X is estimated to be four times as powerful as Xbox One X, with support for 8K resolution and up to 120 frames-per-second rendering, with a nominal target of 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. The Xbox Series S is a digital-only unit with less graphic processing power, but can still render at a nominal 1440p resolution at 60 frames per second with support for 4K upscaling. Both consoles features support for new graphics rendering systems including real-time ray-tracing, and the new Xbox Velocity Architecture that works with the internal SSD drive to maximize the rate of texture streaming to the graphics processor, among other features. Besides games for this new console family, both consoles are fully compatible with all Xbox One games and most hardware, as well as all backward compatible games that were playable on the Xbox One from the Xbox 360 and original Xbox console.

Xbox Series S Price: Cheaper Digital Edition
Rumours circled for months that Microsoft was working on a cheaper Xbox to launch alongside the Series X. Sure enough, the Xbox Series S is a digital-only version of its next-gen console in order to lower the barrier to entry.
It costs £249.99 . That’s just over half the price of the full-fat Xbox Series X and could be a very tempting price for UK gamers.
Gamers in 12 countries, including the US, UK and Australia, also have the option to pre-order the Series S and pay in instalments. Microsoft’s Xbox All Access service gets you Series S console plus Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Live Gold in return for £20.99 per month over a 24 month period.
The main difference between the Xbox Series X and Series S is that the latter doesn’t have a disc drive. Another big difference is that while both consoles support high frame rates of up to 120fps, the Xbox Series X offers native 4K gaming, while the Series S is geared more towards 1440p. If you want to make the most of your 4K TV, the Series X would be the obvious choice, but those with gaming monitors might be perfectly well served by the Series S.
The Series S isn’t as powerful, though. Both consoles have the same Zen 2-based CPU but the Xbox Series X runs at 3.8Hz, while the Series S runs at 3.4Hz. And where the Xbox Series S has 10GB of GDDR6 memory running at 224Gbps, the Series X offers 16GB of GDDR6.

According to Microsoft, Xbox One X won’t have any exclusive games. Not one.
Instead, Xbox One X will play the same games you can play on an Xbox One orXbox One S — but some of them faster and at much higher fidelity.
With 4.5 times the power of an original Xbox One, Microsoft claims Xbox One X can run those same games at ultra high-def 4K resolution at a butter-smooth 60 frames per second. Compare that to today’s Xbox One, which still struggles to output many games at 1,920×1,080-pixel resolution .
Xbox One X is kind of like sticking a new PC video card and an extra memory stick into your game console.

Xbox Series X: Design
Youd be forgiven for saying that the Xbox Series X looks like a small-form-factor PC, because it does at least when its standing upright. Its monolithic design could be seen as uninspired. But I rather like the system’s clean and unfussy appearance. Its big, however.
Measuring 15.1 x 15.1 x 30.1 centimeters and weighing 9.8 pounds, the Series X is a rather bulky machine, though not as large as the PS5. This means youll struggle to fit it into an entertainment unit, unless you place the device on its side. Theres a quartet of soft pads on one side of the console to show you which way it should be positioned when lying sideways. These also prevent the console from slipping around.
I think the Xbox Series X looks a little clunky and clumsy on its side, a bit like the lovechild of an audio amplifier and a brick. I keep mine upright and sitting partially behind my TV, and it looks rather nice in that space, particularly as you can peer into the top vent of the console, which has some green accents around the holes towards the middle.
In fact, while it might look a little clunky peeking out from behind my TV, I think the Series X looks rather good sitting on a desktop. If you plan to plug the system into a 4K or high-refresh-rate monitor, you could be pleasantly surprised.

That Means It Plays All The Same Games As On The Original Xbox One And Xbox One S There Is No Deviation In Any Of The Three Devices’ Game Libraries
In other words, there are no games exclusive to the Xbox One X. If you’d prefer the cheaper Xbox One S, you won’t miss out on that next “Halo,” “Forza,” or whatever else.
At the same time, this means a good chunk of the games from companies other than Microsoft will still be available on the PlayStation 4 and other platforms as well.
Also worth noting: Like the other Xbox One consoles, the One X will be “backward compatible” with select older games from the Xbox 360 and, soon, the original Xbox.

Xbox One X Hardware Specs
If youre looking to see the real differences between the Xbox One X and every other console thats come before it, all youd need to do is open the lid. It goes without saying, though, that this is no longer the console you want if you’re looking for a top-of-the-line machine in 2020.
The console comes equipped with an eight-core CPU clocked at 2.3GHz, alongside 12GB of GDDR5 RAM. It features a GPU clocked at 1172MHz leaving the console with 6 teraflops of graphical computing power. The specs in the Xbox One X are pretty extensive, and helped usher in a new era of 4K HDR gaming in the living room that the Series S and Series X will continue.
Unlike a video cards dedicated VRAM, the Xbox One Xs 12GB of RAM is split between the system and the GPU . So you can definitely buy a gaming PC that’s better than this especially in 2020.
On the CPU side, the Xbox One X is running a custom chip with eight Jaguar CPU cores clocked at 2.3GHz. Thats a 76% increase compared to the CPU inside the original Xbox One and Xbox One S, but probably only puts it in the ballpark of a current-gen Intel Core i3 processor .
The more important comparison for the Xbox One X specs, and the one Microsoft would rather you focus on, is those of the PS4 Pro. Both were released midway through the last generation, and each aims for 4K gaming, so they are directly comparable.

Backwards Compatibility On Xbox Series X
Another of the Xbox Series X’s best features is the breadth of its backwards compatibility. There are well over 1,000 backwards-compatible titles available, meaning youll be hard-pressed to find an older game you have that isnt supported on the Series X.
As mentioned previously, we found these titles loaded faster and simply played better improved stability means fewer frame rate drops, which makes older games feel nicer to play, even if they’re otherwise a little outdated by the standards of modern blockbusters.
This backwards compatibility also extends to Xbox accessories. We found that we could easily connect the original Xbox Wireless Controller and the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 to the Xbox Series X with no issues, and we were also able to connect our headsets.
Any officially licensed Xbox One accessory that connects either wirelessly or via a wired USB connection should work on the Xbox Series X, such as the Xbox Wireless Headset however, its worth noting that optical port connections arent supported, although some of these products may work with a firmware update.

Xbox Series X Review: Ports
Keeping with the clean look, the Xbox Series X has only a USB 3.1 Type-A port and a Blu-ray disc drive on the consoles front. There’s also a wireless controller pairing button. That makes it very easy to quickly plug in a controller to charge, or an external hard drive to transfer games and saves to and from the Series X.
Around the back of the Series X, theres a much wider port selection. Youll find one HDMI 2.1 port: crucial for gaming at 8K, and allowing TVs with 120 Hz panels to take advantage of the 120 frames per second frame rate for certain games. There are also two more USB 3.1 ports – handy for external storage that you plan to keep connected to your console – as well as an Ethernet port and Kensington lock.
Theres no optical audio connection or HDMI-in port, like there were on the Xbox One and One X. However, dropping optical audio is likely to be a pain for only people with powerful audio systems, and the HDMI connection can still carry Dolby Atmos and surround sound signals. Were not really sure if many people used the HDMI-in, so dropping it from the Series X isnt a big deal. It also avoids any chance of plugging an HDMI cable into the wrong port, then wondering why your TV isnt getting a signal: something that’s happened to me before.
The most noteworthy port however, is the expansion slot. This is for the proprietary external PCIe 4.0 SSD that will let you expand the Series X with an extra 1 TB of speedy storage.
Xbox Series X And Series S Pre
Both the Series X and S sold out before hitting the shelves. More stock arrived on launch day 10th November 2020 and promptly sold out. Since then, we’ve seen plenty of retailers restock the Series S but the Series X has been incredibly hard to come by.
To solve the problem, Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently told the ‘Major Nelson’ podcast that he’s asked chipmaker AMD to speed up production: “I was on the phone last week with Lisa Su at AMD , how do we get more? So its something that were constantly working on.”
If Microsoft can get its hands on more chips, it could potentially churn out more Xbox Series X and S consoles. The play seems to be paying off as more Xbox stock is now hitting shelves on both sides of the pond.
In the UK, Currys is due Xbox Series X stock on 23rd January. GAME released a big batch of Xbox Series X and Series S consoles in mid-January. They’ve now sold but Game is tipped to get Series S stock on 31st January. The BT Shop also announced it would have inventory of the Series S, but that allocation has now sold out.
The Series S is also available at selected Amazon locales across Europe. had plenty of Xbox Series S here, for well over a week. Supply seems to have dried up now.
GameStop had a limited number of Xbox Series X and Series S bundles up for grabs but they’re now sold out. The Series X with an extra Carbon Black Wireless Controller, NBA 2K21, 3-month Game Pass and $20 Gamestop gift card would have set you back $694.
