Microsoft Has Unveiled A New Xbox 20/20 Monthly Event Will Showcase The Future Of Xbox

In a bid to ramp up promotions for Xbox Series X, Microsoft has announced a monthly showcase event called Xbox 20/20. According to the developer, the showcase will feature whats next in the world of Xbox.

With the effects of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Microsoft has had to switch up its promotional plans for Xbox Series X. It originally planned to reveal games for the upcoming console at E3, but with the events cancellation, Microsoft has now turned to a monthly digital update format, instead.

Xbox Series X: Games And Backward Compatibility

At The Game Awards, Microsoft showed off a new trailer for Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, which it claims is comprised entirely of in-engine footage. Considering the insane work Ninja Theory did for the original Hellblade in terms of digitizing its performance artists, it’s entirely believable that what we see here is genuinely representative of next-gen technology.

Microsoft has invested more than ever in first-party content moving into next-gen, not just because of the Project Scarlett consoles, but also for Xbox Cloud Streaming, its nascent streaming service, available now on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Both platforms use the same developer environments, ensuring this Xbox iteration could have the largest install base ever, leading to more developer support than ever.

Microsoft revealed a range of impressive-looking games coming to Xbox Series X, including Perfect Dark, Avowed, which looks like Obsidian’s answer to Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and State of Decay 3.

Microsoft also revealed the long-rumored Fable from Playground Games. Microsoft also confirmed that 50 games existing and future will launch with Xbox Series X enhancements, from increased resolution, frame rates, and beyond. Games optimized for the Xbox Series X will also be optimized for the Xbox Series S, producing higher frame rates in games like Destiny 2 and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Initial Announcement And Content Acquisitions

Gates first publicly mentioned the Xbox in an interview in late 1999, stating that he wanted the system “to be the platform of choice for the best and most creative game developers in the world”. It was later announced officially by Gates in a keynote presentation at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose on March 10, 2000, showing off an early prototype build of the system and a series of demos showcasing its hardware. The presentation and the new system were well-received, impressing developers with both the hard drive and the Ethernet port and appealing to them with the notion of easy-to-use development tools.

Microsoft began looking at a series of acquisitions and partnerships to secure content for the console at this time. In early 2000, Sega’s Dreamcast sales were diminishing, in part due to Electronic Arts‘ decision to bypass the console, and Sony’s PlayStation 2 was just going on sale in Japan. Gates was in talks with Sega’s late chairman Isao Okawa about the possibility of Xbox compatibility with Dreamcast games, but negotiations fell apart over whether the Dreamcast’s SegaNet online service should be implemented. Microsoft also looked to acquire Electronic Arts, Nintendo, Square Enix, and Midway without success. The company did achieve success in convincing developers at Bethesda Game Studios and Tecmo about the power of the Xbox over the PS2, lining up The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Dead or Alive 3 as Xbox console-exclusives.

How Do You Turn Off The Xbox Series X Standby Mode

Microsoft Xbox Series X 1TB Video Game Console

Hern clarified his original Tweet by letting his followers know that if you set up your Xbox Series X after May 2022 then the default mode will be set to energy saving. With a final addition, he said: “Ah! Something I’d missed: Microsoft made Energy Saver the default mode in May, so my advice only applies if you set up your Xbox Series X before then. “.

If you’re one of the many people who bought it prior to May , then you just need to go into settings, and turn on ‘Energy Saver Mode’. Simple as that.

Xbox Series X Specs Quick Look

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen Custom Zen 2 CPU
  • GPU: AMD Navi-based GPU
  • Max Output Resolution: 8K
  • Max Refresh Rate: 120Hz

All of that suggests a price that is on the higher-end of normalcy. One report with purportedly leaked specs in October claimed the higher-end model would be $500, which fits that criteria. However, it’s unclear if Microsoft is pursuing a strategy of two models at launch, so that report could be inaccurate. Spencer did mention in the Series X reveal that the name “gives us the freedom to do other things with that name so that we can create descriptors when we need to.” That implies a strategy around multiple models, at least long-term.

Spencer in a later interview, saying he feels good about the price and performance ratio and he feels Microsoft has a “winning plan” against Sony. That said, the price isn’t entirely set yet. Spencer also noted that the company is staying agile on price, anticipating factors like Sony’s price for the PS5 and how they could leverage value-added services like Game Pass and Smart Delivery.

One reason Microsoft hasn’t talked more openly about price could be that the decision is still in flux. Spencer said in June that the price could be impacted by a lot of factors, including President Donald Trump’s trade war with China.

Hern said: “At current electricity prices, leaving an Xbox Series X on ‘standby’, its default switched off mode, will cost you £132 a year. Dip into settings and toggle it over to ‘energy saver’. .”

He continued: “It’s generally rare for a standby mode to use as much power as a Series X does, which is why I’m highlighting it. There’s been no other easy wins in my house – the router also uses around £140 a year, but for obvious reasons you’re less likely to want to switch that off”

Xbox Series X: Size And Dimensions

Just how big is this thing? We now know the official dimensions, putting it at 301mm x 151mm x 151mm.

Compared to an Xbox One X at 300mm x 240mm x 60mm, the Xbox Series X has a far larger volume, most likely to accommodate airflow and the technology inside it. Microsoft has stated that it built it this way to ensure that it is virtually silent while powering next-gen cutting-edge visuals. Xbox Series S Price: Cheaper Digital Edition

Rumours circled for months that Microsoft was working on a cheaper Xbox to launch alongside the Series X. Sure enough, the Xbox Series S is a digital-only version of its next-gen console in order to lower the barrier to entry.

It costs £249.99 / $299 / AU$499. That’s just over half the price of the full-fat Xbox Series X and could be a very tempting price for UK gamers.

Gamers in 12 countries, including the US, UK and Australia, also have the option to buy the Series S and pay in instalments. Microsoft’s Xbox All Access service gets you Series S console plus Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Live Gold in return for £20.99 / $24.99 / AU$33 per month over a 24 month period.

The main difference between the Xbox Series X and Series S is that the latter doesn’t have a disc drive. Another big difference is that while both consoles support high frame rates of up to 120fps, the Xbox Series X offers native 4K gaming, while the Series S is geared more towards 1440p. If you want to make the most of your 4K TV, the Series X would be the obvious choice, but those with gaming monitors might be perfectly well served by the Series S.

The Series S isn’t as powerful, though. Both consoles have the same Zen 2-based CPU but the Xbox Series X runs at 3.8Hz, while the Series S runs at 3.4Hz. And where the Xbox Series S has 10GB of GDDR6 memory running at 224Gbps, the Series X offers 16GB of GDDR6.

    New Games Old Hardware

Xbox Series X Release Date, Price, Specs, and Pre

Microsoft has said you wont have to buy new hardware to enjoy its upcoming first-party titles because many of them will also come to Xbox One. Heres how Xbox chief Phil Spencer described the companys approach back in July, where he said that every Xbox Game Studios game in the next couple of years will be playable on the Xbox One.

You wont be forced into the next generation. We want every Xbox player to play all the new games from Xbox Game Studios. Thats why Xbox Game Studios titles we release in the next couple of yearslike Halo Infinitewill be available and play great on Xbox Series X and Xbox One. We wont force you to upgrade to Xbox Series X at launch to play Xbox exclusives.

And if youre more of a PC gamer and dont own an Xbox One, then Microsoft also typically releases its major titles there as well, and it says it plans to continue this policy this year.

Microsoft has promised to bring Halo Infinite to PC and Xbox One as well as its new Xbox consoles.

There are some caveats you should be aware of. First is that these promises only cover Microsofts first-party titles, aka those published by Xbox Game Studios. Microsoft isnt making any promises about how other publishers like EA, Ubisoft, or Activision will handle their new games.

    Optimized Games And 120hz Modes

These load times and CPU improvements, alongside a big bump to 12 teraflops of GPU performance, all contribute to an experience in existing games that feels a lot smoother. That could mean a jump from 30fps to 60fps in games like Fallout 4, or menus and planet load times in Destiny 2 suddenly being on par with PC.

These improvements also mean that most titles with poor performance on an Xbox One should hit a stable 30fps at the minimum. A lot of frame rate drops that Ive seen in games on the Xbox One X have simply disappeared with the Xbox Series X, thanks to the hardware boost. Ive noticed Apex Legends, Warframe, and Destiny 2 all dipping less at demanding points.

A number of Xbox Series X optimization patches will be available when the console launches on November 10th, and Ive had a chance to test both Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 4. Both games are transformed by these updates, moving from 30fps to 60fps. Sea of Thieves feels like a new game as a result, or like youre playing on a PC. Thats how dramatic the shift from 30fps to 60fps feels.

The new 120Hz option on the Xbox Series X.

Alongside the optimization patches, the most exciting games Ive tested so far on the Xbox Series X are Dirt 5 and Gears 5 not because theyre necessarily technical showcases for the console, but because both offer a new 120Hz option.

    Gears 5 supports 120Hz in multiplayer.Dirt 5 video options.

Im hoping we see these choices on many optimized Xbox Series X titles in the future.

How Expensive Is The Xbox Series X

The Xbox Series X retails at $499, while the Series S starts at $299. Microsoft is also offering an Xbox All Access financial plan for the new consoles, aimed at making the barrier of entry a little less steep. With Xbox All Access, consumers can pay for their new console in installments. The Xbox Series X costs $35 a month, while the Series S costs $25 a month for 24 months. The monthly payments also include Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, meaning youll gain instant access to tons of games. Xbox Series X Review: Verdict

The Xbox Series X is the one Xbox to rule them all. Its a single machine thatll run generations of Xbox games, and run them well. Furthermore, itll do so without looking fussy or making a racket.

Sure, $499 is still a good wad of cash to drop on a gaming machine that hasn’t yet shown any breathtaking next-gen capabilities. But I think its a reasonable price to pay for the tech youre getting. The latest AMD processor and graphics technology promises a lot of power, and the joy of loading games up in mere seconds rather than minutes cant be underestimated. While PCs have had SSDs for a while now, you’d struggle to build a gaming machine with this power and advanced storage for $1,000, let alone half that price.

I was originally expecting to feel a little disappointed with the Series X, given that theres no one killer app or game to really make it feel like a next-gen powerhouse. But as games now look so good, were not going to get the graphical leap we’ve seen in previous generation consoles. Rather, the Series X is all about making the experience of gaming easier, faster and just better.

With that in mind, the Xbox Series X is a triumph in the here and now. But I cant wait to see what it will be able over the course of its lifetime.
