Fallout 3 Revived An Old Franchise And Improved On It

It sounds ridiculous to say now, but at the time Bethesda was taking a risk when they released Fallout 3. The franchise hadn’t had a new game since Fallout 2 in 1998, which was a completely different world to release games in. Bethesda overhauled the graphics and combat, turning it into a 3D action RPG instead of the isometric turn-based series it had been as well.

But if they lost any of the fans from the Interplay era, they made them up in spades thanks to the game being an evolution of the open, choice-focused gameplay that made their last two Elder Scrolls games such a massive hit.

Second Screen And Streaming

The Xbox SmartGlassapp provides extended functionality on Xbox One, allowing devices running Windows Phone, Windows 8, iOS and Android to be used as a companion device for Xbox One features, such as powering on the console, a remote control, accessing messages and the Activity Feed, purchasing content, and providing integration with certain games and content. The SmartGlass app can also be used to stream live television to Android and Windows devices if the console is using a USB digital television tuner.

On Windows 10, SmartGlass is succeeded by the Xbox App, which supports the local streaming of games from Xbox One to personal computers and tablets running Windows 10. An Xbox One controller must be used, but Windows-compatible headsets and microphones can be used for voice chat. Games requiring Kinect are not supported, while Game DVR and online streaming are not available while using this functionality.

Per a partnership with Oculus VR, users will also be able to stream Xbox One games to the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset by means of Xbox app for Windows 10 as of 2015 there were no immediate plans for direct integration between Xbox One and Oculus Rift.

/10 Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

BioWare really outdid itself with Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic. This game isnt set during the events of the films but is actually in its own time period. This gave the developers the ability to create interesting lore and areas to explore.

A great example of early morality systems in video games, where the players choices and actions had a real impact on the game. The title is full of memorable characters and a long and winding narrative. Its a must-play for Star Wars fans!

A Merger Of Two Giants

There is no question that Bill Gates is a smart businessman. He has built an empire that continues to play a major part in computer hardware and software development and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Hed always loved gaming and so when it came time to make his own console he went to a company with knowledge for help.

Bill Gates wanted to make a console that truly bridged the gap between PC and console gaming.

Though Microsoft had a ton of experience with computers, they didnt know much about the game console market and so Bill Gates thought that partnering with a giant like Sony was the best option. Though he thought that he had a good business model to entice Sony with, the console giant turned down his proposal. From that point on he set out to crush the company, even nicknaming the console project Midway.

When Was The Xbox One Released

Microsoft released the Xbox One in November 2013, a more powerful system that addressed one of the most persistent flaws of the Xbox 360, which itself had replaced the original Xbox in 2005. A larger, better-ventilated housing, combined with more responsive cooling mechanisms, meant that the Xbox One would not be subject to the overheating issues that had plagued the earlier console.

Xbox, video game console system created by the American company Microsoft. The Xbox, Microsofts first entry into the world of console electronic gaming, was released in 2001, which placed it in direct competition with SonysPlayStation 2 and Nintendos GameCube.

Concerned about Sonys successful PlayStation console damaging the personal computer market, Microsoft initiated plans in 1999 to create its own console gaming system to both diversify its product line and capitalize on the thriving gaming industry. The systemoriginally termed the DirectX-box for its use of the eponymous video softwareunderwent multiple launch delays and several pricing adjustments after it made its debut. Despite popular titles such as Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, Microsoft reported in 2005 that it had thus far lost $4 billion from the Xbox enterprise.

Formal Announcement And Release

The Xbox was officially unveiled to the public by Gates and guest professional wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at CES 2001 in Las Vegas on January 3, 2001. Microsoft announced Xbox’s release dates and prices at E3 2001 in May. Most Xbox launch titles were unveiled at E3, most notably Halo and Dead or Alive 3.

The unit’s release in November 2001 was partially hampered by the impact of the on travel, as Microsoft could not travel to the Guadalajara facility to help test units. They were able to arrange to ship the units locally instead of testing at Microsoft facilities to have them ready for launch.

The system was officially launched at midnight on November 15, 2001, three days before the subsequent launch of the Nintendo GameCube. A special event was held on the prior night as part of the grand opening of the flagship store of Toys ‘R’ Us at Times Square in New York City, in which 1,000 systems were shipped to the store to kick off sales. Bill Gates was present at the event, personally selling the very first Xbox console and greeting people in line and playing games with them at the numerous display units present.

The Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay

Movie-licensed video games suck. Or at least, they did until Starbreeze Studios and Vin Diesel’s own Tigon Studios came along and threw that stereotype into a Dumpster. Riddick would’ve been a classic even with no association to Diesel’s film series, because Escape From Butcher Bay was an impeccably designed first-person stealth game that mixed a stunning bespoke game engine with great characters, a fantastic story, and a mix of gameplay styles. Riddick was light years better than it had any right to be, and it was an Xbox exclusive to boot.

The Elder Scrolls Iii: Morrowind Brought The Elder Scrolls To Consoles

Play Original Xbox Games On PC With XEMU!

The first time the franchise had ever come to consoles, Bethesda Game Studios created an instant classic with Elder Scrolls III. The game took players to the island of Vvardenfell, where a demigod needs to be dealt with before it’s too late. At release, there was nothing like it on console–it took place in a massive open world and the game emphasized choice-based gameplay.

Morrowind’s heavy focus on choices resulted in a smaller focus on the main storyline, but a world that players could believably get lost in. Still, Morrowind had plenty of quests for people to enjoy even without the main storyline. Even after the story ends, Morrowind‘s world continues to develop, meaning players could continue playing after the credits roll.

Project Gotham Racing 2

The original Xbox was home to some great racing series, including the long-defunct Project Gotham Racing franchise. Project Gotham Racing 2–which is actually the third entry in the series–pushed the series to impressive heights when it launched in 2003. If you liked your racing games to feature a tantalizing mix of simulation and arcade racing, this was the game for you. Project Gotham Racing 2 had a whopping 14 classes of cars and a wonderful career mode that took place across 14 cities. It was absolutely massive in terms of scope and replay value.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4

Choosing the best Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Xbox game definitely isn’t easy. There are four really awesome THPS games on Xbox. We’re going with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 here, because it was a turning point for the franchise. Pro Skater 4 added open-world game elements, removing the time restriction for runs that was present in the first three entries. Each of the big levels contained a wide variety of challenges that you could find by skating around and talking to people such as other pros. This free-skate focus made Pro Skater 4 feel less constrained. The core gameplay felt better than ever before, too. Nowadays, the best way to experience classic Tony Hawk games is to pick up the remastered version of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, but here’s hoping Activision makes a new open-world entry in the series down the road.

Gears Of War 2 Builds On An Already Perfect Game

With the success of Halo, Xbox might have seemed a bit too focused on first-person shooters. In the same way, Halo 2 revolutionized how players thought of the FPS genre, the Gears of War franchise revolutionized how third-person shooters were designed, introducing the concept of cover players could hide behind to safely attack their enemies.

But while the story is memorable, what stuck with fans was the game’s Horde Mode, a co-op mode where players fight waves of increasingly stronger Locusts.

The 42 Best Original Xbox Games Of All Time

At one point, the only juggernauts in console gaming were considered to be Sega, Nintendo, and Sony. After Sega decided to bow out of the console hardware race, a shocking new challenger rose up to make their presence felt. Shockingly, that newfound gaming entity ended up being Microsoft.

Their contribution to the world of console gaming came in the form of a massive black box outfitted with a big green “X” icon placed smack dab in the middle of it. That powerful machine is known as the original Xbox.

On November 15, 2001, gamers in the States got the chance to pick up their very own Xbox and get enamored with all the graphical & mechanical upgrades that came with it. Before the ball dropped to ring in the new year, the original Xbox managed to sell 1.5 million units before 2001 came to an end. Another aspect of the original Xbox that’s still looked back on quite fondly is its strong software library. The Xbox One was released on November 22, 2013, in North America, as the successor to the Xbox 360. The Xbox One competes with Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s Wii U and Switch as part of the eighth generation of video game consoles.

Announced on May 21, 2013, the Xbox One has an emphasis on internet-based features, including the ability to record and stream gameplay, and the ability to integrate with a set-top box to watch cable or satellite TV through the console with an enhanced guide interface and Kinect-based voice control.

On June 13, 2016, Microsoft announced the Xbox One S at E3 2016, which featured a smaller form factor, as well as support for 4K video and HDR. At E3 2017, Microsoft unveiled Xbox One X, a high-end model with improved hardware designed to facilitate the playing of games at 4K resolution.

Since November 2014, Microsoft has stated it will not release sales numbers for the Xbox One line. Industry estimates project global sales of the Xbox One family to be about 51 million units. Xbox head Phil Spencer said that while they do internally track sales figures, they do not want their developers to be focused on these numbers as to affect their products, and thus have opted not to report further sales of Xbox hardware going forward.

Microsoft Xbox At : Looking Back At The Original 2001 Review

For the Xbox 20th anniversary, a games industry veteran revisits his original CNET review.

Dan Ackerman leads CNET’s coverage of computers and gaming hardware. A New York native and former radio DJ, he’s also a semi-regular TV talking head and the author of “The Tetris Effect” , a non-fiction gaming and business history book that has earned rave reviews from the New York Times, Fortune, LA Review of Books, and many other publications.”Upends the standard Silicon Valley, Steve Jobs/Mark Zuckerberg technology-creation myth… the story shines.” — The New York Times

It was 20 years ago, Nov. 15, 2001, when the original Xbox game console went on sale in the US. The launch was a gamble for Microsoft, a company then known more for software supremacy than groundbreaking hardware.

Sony, Nintendo and Sega were the main living room console players at the time, led by the PlayStation 2, released a year earlier in 2000. Since then, we’ve seen multiple generations of Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo consoles jousting for our attention and entertainment dollars. The competition continues, and we’ve just passed the one-year birthday of both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.
