Minecraft: Xbox One Edition players can still update to Bedrock Edition for free!
In September 2017, we released the Better Together update for Minecraft on Xbox One, iOS, Android, the Windows 10 version and Gear VR . This update was essentially a new version of the game, the Bedrock version, which let Minecraft players enjoy multiplayer with each other across all those platforms! But why are we bragging about this update over two years later? Because if youre still playing/own a copy of Minecraft: Xbox One Edition, then you can still update to the Bedrock version, absolutely free! Youve been able to do this since we released the Better Together update, but this offer wont last forever. The Hugely Popular Sandbox Title Will Launch On November 2nd For The Subscription Service With Both Versions Accessible In A Single Launcher
Posted By Ravi Sinha | On 18th, Oct. 2021
Minecraft is currently available for Xbox Game Pass on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. However, its PC versions have been absent from the subscription service. Thats going to change on November 2nd when Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition both being added.
Both versions will be playable on Windows 10 and 11, along with supporting cross-play with other platforms including mobile devices. Theyll both be available in a single launcher, allowing players to choose the one they want to go with. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition is the more stable release and better suited for cross-platform play but the Java Edition allows for deeper modding and comes with Hardcore mode.
Having both options will thus be great though it remains to be seen if the Java Edition will support cross-platform play as well as the Bedrock Edition. Minecraft is currently available on pretty much every platform, from Xbox One, PS4 and PC to Nintendo Switch, iOS, Xbox 360, Android and PS3. Stay tuned for more details on its Game Pass launch in the coming weeks.
‘java Edition’ Is Exclusive To Pc Mac And Linux
Firstly, if you’re planning on playing “Minecraft” on anything other than a computer, then you’ll be playing “Bedrock.” There’s no choice there the “Java” version is only available on computers.

Will I Keep All Of My Progression And Purchases With Cross
Since the version of Minecraft you’ll play on the Xbox Series X and Series S will be the exact same as the version you’ll play on other platforms and will be synced through your Microsoft account, Marketplace purchases should still carry over. Your maps should also carry over from Xbox One as long as you have cloud saves turned on, so you can download your maps and enjoy all the greatness that the Xbox Series X|S has to offer.
This is the benefit of taking advantage of features like Smart Delivery, because instead of having to figure out how to connect two entirely separate games , Mojang Studios can use all the existing features in Minecraft that protect your progression. That means it should be easier than ever to keep all of your information moving forward and ensure any money you spent purchasing new maps, worlds, or packs in Minecraft doesn’t go to waste on Xbox Series X|S.
Protecting cross-save also matters if you’re coming from Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on another platform to Xbox Series X|S, as your Marketplace purchases like maps, skins, and texture packs should sync through your Microsoft Account.
What You Need To Know
- Minecraft is a sandbox game from Xbox Game Studios.
- The title keeps on growing with each update.
- You can only upgrade to the Bedrock Edition until November 30.
- You can play Minecraft through Xbox Game Pass, too.
Minecraft has been in the news for a number of reasons lately. Microsoft is teaming up with NVIDIA for ray tracing support, and another augmented reality game called Minecraft Earth is being tested out around the world. However, the original’s numbers keep on climbing, too.
There are two versions of Minecraft available on Xbox One. One is the old one, the “non-Bedrock” edition, while the other one supports cross-play between PC and even Nintendo Switch, and is the latest and greatest release. Beforehand, those who owned the non-Bedrock version could’ve upgraded at any time to Bedrock, but now it seems like the timer has begun to count down.
Recently, Tom Stone wrote on Minecraft’s website that “existing Minecraft: Xbox One Edition players now have until November 30, 2019 to redeem their free update to the Bedrock version.” If you haven’t upgraded, be sure to do so before this promotion expires.
Just search for Minecraft on your Xbox One, or head over to this link. The Bedrock edition should have new cover art so it’s easy to spot. The price should be free, so just click on it and install it. That way, you’ll own a copy of the game even though it’s free.
Here’s a quick step-by-step to help you ensure you have the correct version.

Both versions of the game have their own servers. But “Java” servers have been around for almost a decade now, meaning that there’s no shortage of cool maps to pick from.

When Is The Release Date For Minecraft On Xbox Series X
The question to end all questions is when Minecraft will be upgraded for the Xbox Series X and Series S. We have an entire article dedicated to when Minecraft with ray tracing will come to Xbox Series X|S, but the answer there is the same as here: we simply don’t know.
Between an early technical demonstration of Minecraft with ray tracing running on Xbox Series X, Minecraft RTX working wonderfully on Windows 10, and the gaming technologies inside Xbox Series X|S progressively becoming more accessible, it’s easy to assume and believe that Minecraft is definitely being upgraded for Xbox Series X|S. Unfortunately, there has been absolutely zero confirmation from Mojang Studios that it’s actually happening, so we’re not able to take guesses at a potential release date.
Recent rumors have suggested that Minecraft will receive its next-gen upgrade with the upcoming Caves and Cliffs Update. However, the Caves and Cliffs Update was recently split into two parts and partially delayed, so even if Minecraft was being upgraded for Xbox Series X|S with this next feature update it’s still not clear. Should we expect it in Summer 2021 or Winter 2021? If the next-gen upgrade was planned, has it now been delayed beyond the Caves and Cliffs Update like the new archeology system? There’s simply no way to know for sure.

Minecraft Grows Bigger All The Time
Minecraft was an international sensation years before Microsoft acquired Mojang, having hosted its first dedicated convention in 2010 prior to the game’s official 1.0 launch during MineCon 2011. What began as a barebones building game with voxel-based graphics had evolved with a myriad of additional mechanics, inspiring copycat games and launching untold numbers of careers on social media. Minecraft videos on YouTube collectively passed a trillion views in December 2021, and the franchise is nowhere near the end of its life.
Major updates have changed the face of Minecraft since Microsoft’s acquisition, including The Nether Update in 2020 and most recently its two-part Caves and Cliffs update. The Wild Update was announced at Minecraft Live 2021, set to revamp swamps and other overworld biomes, as well as introduce the “Deep Dark” underground. Multiple different Minecraft games have also expanded its reach, from an augmented Minecraft: Education Edition to experimental spin-offs like the now-defunct AR mobile game Minecraft Earth and the Diablo-like dungeon crawler Minecraft Dungeons.
The Bedrock Edition Limits Modding
While the Bedrock Edition does have add-ons, it features more paid content to add to the game, whereas the Java version lets you install mods for free.
If youre planning on modding the heck out of your game and dont want to be limited by Microsoft-approved mods, youll want to go with the Java Edition.
What Is Minecraft On Xbox Series X
The Xbox Series X and S represent the beginning of a new generation of console gaming, with powerful evolutionary hardware pushing groundbreaking features that we haven’t seen in the console space yet, like faster SSD storage, ray tracing, and more reliable performance even with upgraded visuals. Minecraft, being one of Microsoft’s biggest and most successful franchises, will work on the Xbox Series X|S from day one through the platform’s impressive backward compatibility program, even if it doesn’t immediately support all of the latest features that the Xbox Series X|S can utilize for next-gen games.
Don’t expect a “Minecraft 2” or even a specific version of Minecraft built from the ground up for Xbox Series X|S. Instead, if Minecraft does receive an update to help it take advantage of next-gen hardware, Mojang Studios will leverage the power and flexibility of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
This more modern version of Minecraft currently spans Xbox One, Windows 10, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS platforms with one code base and feature set across all of them. This is all possible due to the Bedrock foundation and the Render Dragon engine, which allows Minecraft: Bedrock Edition to dynamically conform to whatever platform you’re playing on with the same great experience and gameplay with which you’re familiar.
Will Xbox Smart Delivery Be Used For Minecraft On Xbox Series X
A continuation of the last question, will Minecraft use Xbox Smart Delivery feature to deliver the next-gen Minecraft upgrade to Xbox Series X|S?
In case you didn’t know, Smart Delivery is a technology that allows games to intelligently download only the parts of a game that is necessary for the platform. Someone playing on the Xbox One doesn’t need the 4K assets and textures of the more powerful Series X or the next-gen textures of the Series S, so foregoing those assets leads to much smaller download sizes and even potentially improved performance. Smart Delivery also makes it seamless to upgrade a game for Xbox Series X|S and has led to several games receiving Xbox Series X|S upgrades in a far more leisurely fashion than on PS5, which requires PS5 games to be separate from PS4.
Like mentioned earlier, developers are encouraged to offer free upgrades to existing games to enable new next-gen features. Still, the final decision is up to the developers. Even if they decide to provide a free upgrade , the delivery method is up to them as well. The most straightforward one so far has been Microsoft’s Smart Delivery, as it means publishing a single game and then having the players’ consoles download what they need to deliver the best possible experience to the player.

‘java Edition’ Has A Near
One huge difference between “Java” and “Bedrock” is the ability to add mods, which is only available to Java players.
Mods are pieces of software you can add to “Minecraft” to transform the game in just about any way you like. There are basic mods that alter the graphics or change the music, and more advanced mods that introduce new items or change how the world generates.
Best of all, nearly all of these mods are free. And there’s even a dedicated program called Minecraft Forge that will let you install and edit them easily.
While “Bedrock” has some modding tools available, you have to pay for them, and there are only a few compared to the limitlessness of “Java.”

Minecraft Java Edition And Bedrock Edition Are Coming To Xbox Game Pass For Pc
Minecraft Live 2021, Mojangs annual celebration of all things bright and blocky, is happening right now, and while weve been expecting updates about updates and new mob reveals, Mojang has also unveiled that two versions of Minecraft are coming to Xbox Game Pass for PC later this year.
To be more specific, the two versions are Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, and theyll both be available via Xboxs Game Pass for PC service from November 2, 2021.
Now if like us the many different Minecraft versions scare and confuse you, then heres roughly what each of those versions offer. Java Edition, which is normally sold via the Minecraft website for £17.95 / $26.95, is the most customisable version of the game, and is the version youll want if you plan on using custom Minecraft skins, Minecraft mods, and booting up custom Minecraft maps and servers. Those are basically all of the things that make Minecraft on PC one of the best sandbox games around.
However, Java Edition is also much more demanding on your hardware, which is why you might want to check out Bedrock Edition, which is the multiplatform, cross-play, and gamepad compatible version of the game. Its also much less demanding on hardware. Bedrock Edition is normally available on the Microsoft store for £22.49 / $26.99. This edition also features access to the Minecraft Marketplace, where you can buy additional maps, skins, and various other goodies.
