What Is Xbox Live Gold Everything You Need To Know Updated December 2021
Xbox Live has been around for pretty much the entire lifespan of the Xbox console, and Xbox Live Gold is the more premium version of it. And while it has gone through changes and growing pains over the years, its been there to deliver a more robust online experience to gamers on the Xbox platform. You can access it from older Xbox consoles, and even the new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Unlike Game Pass, Xbox Live Gold and Games with Gold are specifically designed for use with the Xbox consoles.
These days, if you want the best online gaming experience that you can possibly have on Xbox, you want Xbox Live Gold. But, what exactly is Xbox Live Gold? Well break down the ins and outs of the service in this handy guide. Attempting to leave no stone unturned so that no one goes into subscribing without knowing any important details.
Well also update this post from time to time if there are any major changes to the service.
Should I Get Xbox Live Gold Or Xbox Game Pass
This depends on your gaming habits. Xbox Live Gold’s biggest selling point is not the free games, but it’s being able to play online. Are you someone who is going to play a few games online and only those games on a regular basis? Then you’ll want Xbox Live Gold.
On the other hand, if you want what is the equivalent to “Netflix for video games,” then Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is an easy choice. You have more than 100 games to choose from, and you’ll be able to play them from multiple devices. Tack on Xbox Live Gold, and you get a tremendous value for $15 a month. Put another way, you get to play dozens of games per year for the price of just three new console games purchased at retail .

How Much Does Xbox Live Gold Cost
You can subscribe to Xbox Live Gold in four different increments of time. One-month subscriptions, three-month subscriptions, six-month subscriptions, or annual subscriptions.
Obviously the cheapest up front will be the one-month subscription. But there is more value in going for the longer offers. As theyre priced to make it less per month than simply subscribing month by month.
Doing month by month gives you more control and the knowledge that you werent wasting any money if you were to ever cancel. But If you are certain you will be utilizing the membership every month for a set period of time, youre much better off subscribing for a longer period of time. Because you save money in the long run.
One-month subscriptions will be $9.99, three-month subscriptions will be $24.99, six-month subscriptions will be $39.99, and annual subscriptions will be $59.99.
Sometimes these will go on sale and you can pick up subscriptions for cheaper than normal. So its a good idea to keep an eye out for sales on the annual membership. As sometimes you can find them on sale for less than the six-month membership.

Microsoft Movies & Tv / Microsoft Films & Tv
On November 6, 2006, Microsoft announced Microsoft Movies & TV , an exclusive video store accessible through the console. Launched in the United States on November 22, 2006, the first anniversary of the Xbox 360’s launch, the service allows users in the United States to download high-definition and standard-definition television shows for purchase and movies for rental onto an Xbox 360 console for viewing. With the exception of short clips, content is not currently available for streaming, and must be downloaded. Movies are available for rental from the Video Marketplace. They expire in 14 days after download or at the end of the first 24 hours after the movie has begun playing, whichever comes first. Television episodes can be purchased to own, and are transferable to an unlimited number of consoles. Downloaded files use 5.1 surround audio and are encoded using VC-1 for video at 720p, with a bitrate of 6.8 Mbit/s. Television content is offered from MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Turner Broadcasting and CBS and movie content is Warner Bros., Paramount and Disney, along with other publishers.
The “Game with Fame” initiative has been Microsoft’s way to connect Xbox Live members with celebrities and game developers. What You Need To Know
- Xbox Live Gold is a monthly subscription service that lets you play online multiplayer on your Xbox console.
- It also includes the Games with Gold perks, which gives subscribers up to four free games every month.
- In December, the free titles will consist of games like Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell and Bleed 2.
- The games have a combined value of 3,200 Gamerscore for all the Achievement hunters.
Everyone is getting into the holiday spirit, and that means it’s time for a new batch of Games with Gold through Xbox Live Gold. Xbox Games with Gold for December includes four titles worth a combined $74.96 and 3,200 Gamerscore, and will all be compatible with the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and Xbox One. You have to be subscribed to Xbox Live Gold to redeem the games, but Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers have access to Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Game Pass for PC and console, and Xbox Cloud Gaming in one subscription.
All four of these games will be available throughout the month of December and can be redeemed and played by anyone who has an Xbox Live Gold subscription. The first game that will be available is Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell, an Xbox 360 title, from December 1, 2020, to December 15. Then you have the Raven Remastered, which will be available from December 1 to December 31. Next is Stacking, another Xbox 360 title, which will be available from December 16 to December 31. Finally, there’s Bleed 2, which will be available from December 16 to January 15.
Remember Youll Have To Download Them First
Theres one major way this experience doesnt compare to Netflix or even Sonys PlayStation Now. While both Netflix and PlayStation Now allow you to start streaming a video or game immediately, Xbox Game Pass requires you download a game to your Xbox One before you play it.
For example, BioShock Infinite, which is 13 GB in size, took nearly an hour to download on our fairly speedy Internet connection.
If you plan on sticking with a game, thats good news. Youll have better performance with the game installed on your Xbox One. But you cant just sit down and flip through a few games, trying each for a few minutes and seeing what you like. Youll need to download each game in full before you play it.
Thats fine, reallyits the standard experience with Xbox One games, after all. Just dont expect anything else. How long you have to wait before playing a game will depend on the speed of your Internet connection.
Once a game is installed, you can play it all you like. If your Xbox Game Pass subscription expires, the game will remain installed, but you wont be able to play it until you either resubscribe or purchase the game. You dont get to keep games you download via Xbox Game Passyou lose access to them when your subscription stops.

Fourth Generation: Xbox Series X And Series S
The fourth generation of Xbox models, simply named Xbox, includes the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S that launched on November 10, 2020. Both are considered members of the ninth generation of video game consoles alongside the PlayStation 5, also released that month.
The Xbox Series X and Series S are high- and low-end versions comparable to the Xbox One X and Xbox One S models, respectively, with all games designed for this model family playable on both systems. The Xbox Series X is estimated to be four times as powerful as Xbox One X, with support for 8K resolution and up to 120 frames-per-second rendering, with a nominal target of 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. The Xbox Series S is a digital-only unit with less graphic processing power, but can still render at a nominal 1440p resolution at 60 frames per second with support for 4K upscaling. Both consoles features support for new graphics rendering systems including real-time ray-tracing, and the new Xbox Velocity Architecture that works with the internal SSD drive to maximize the rate of texture streaming to the graphics processor, among other features. Besides games for this new console family, both consoles are fully compatible with all Xbox One games and most hardware, as well as all backward compatible games that were playable on the Xbox One from the Xbox 360 and original Xbox console.
How Does Deals With Gold Work
In addition to the free games, Microsoft offers a variety of exclusive deals on digital Xbox One and Xbox 360 games to members. You can view the current deals on the Deals With Gold website and in the Store on your Xbox. These deals change every week. And as with the free games, you wont see the latest big-name games here as soon as theyre released.
Once youve purchased a game, its yours to play all you like, even if your subscription ends.

Xbox One: What You Get For Xbox Live Gold
Our handy guide lets you know.
Like PlayStation 4, Xbox One requires a subscription to its premium service to play games online. But what, exactly, do you get with Xbox Live Gold?
An Xbox Live Gold membership costs £40 for 12 months, and extends across Xbox 360 and Xbox One. So, if you’re an existing Xbox Live Gold member, there’s no need to pay any extra.
Gold gives you access to a raft of the Xbox One’s features and apps, including access to HD movies and TV shows, live events, music and sport. Gold also grants access to Internet Explorer and Skype.
When Microsoft says Xbox Live Gold grants access to multiplayer gaming on Xbox One, what it means is you have access to the new Smart Match system, used to pair players based on skill, language and the Xbox One’s new reputation system. Microsoft points out that on Xbox One you don’t have to wait in a lobby while a match is found – you can play a game, watch TV or listen to music while Smart Match does its thing, then jump in.
As for apps, it’s a similar situation on Xbox One as it is on Xbox 360: the likes of Netflix, Internet Explorer and Skype all sit behind the Xbox Live Gold paywall. It means we find ourselves in the curious situation of having to pay to access Skype – a Microsoft-owned company, brand and technology – on Xbox One, whereas it’s free to use on competitor Sony’s PlayStation Vita. And on your smartphone. And on your PC.
Here’s what Gold gets you on Xbox One in a handy list:

Xbox Live Gold 2021 Review: Time To Bail After Free
Xbox Live Gold is your gateway to multiplayer on console, with almost two decades the go-to Xbox subscription. With more games than ever built with multiplayer in mind, the online membership ensures you’re getting the best value from your Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S libraries.
But 2021 brings network-wide changes, shaking up the Xbox Live Gold offerings for the latest console generation. Microsoft has lifted the paywall for free-to-play content, axing the mandate for some of the most popular games on the market. Here’s what’s new with Xbox Live Gold for April 2021 and whether the subscription is right for you.
How Many Games Do Subscribers Get For Free Each Month
This will vary, but it seems to be from one to three games on average. It will not always be the same amount of games every month either.
Sometimes the games given out for free are newer titles. Other times theyre indie titles that werent that much to begin with. The point being that its important to stay on top of which games are being given out every single month. And its even better to know the moment Microsoft confirms the lineup. So you can avoid buying something that you may be getting for free soon.
If youve got the Xbox app installed on your smartphone, you can usually find out what the games are from this app.

Build imaginative, awe-inspiring worlds with your friends. Compete in heart-pounding matches that require quick thinking and fast reflexes. Whether its competitive or cooperative gameplay on your console, Xbox Live Gold takes your game to the next level. Alone you are mighty. With others, youre Gold.
Dropping Xbox Live Gold For Free
We’re closer than ever to the historic day when free-to-play games would no longer require Xbox Live Gold.
Microsoft has revealed that Omega Xbox Insiders will no longer require an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play free-to-play games online. This effectively makes the feature available to all Xbox Insiders, indicating that its public rollout is imminent.
In a blog post, Microsoft indicated that nothing has changed since the feature first became available to Alpha Skip Ahead and Alpha Insiders. As with all policy changes and new features, Microsoft releases them gradually to the various Insider rings, before unlocking them for everyone ahead of their public launch.
Unfortunately, this also means that some games have yet to be updated to support this change. Destiny 2, and Call of Duty: Warzone both still require an Xbox Live Gold membership to play online, something Microsoft warned about. The company is also looking for reports of any other free-to-play games that don’t play nice so that it can alert their developers to ready necessary patches.
The decision to drop the Gold requirement for free-to-play games was first announced back in January, after Microsoft reversed course on a plan to increase Xbox Live Gold subscription fees following negative feedback, just one day after the new prices were revealed.
