Initial Unveiling And Launch
Industry rumors of new Xbox hardware had started as early as June 2018, with Microsoft’s Phil Spencer confirming they were “deep into architecturing the next Xbox consoles” at that time. The hardware was believed to be a family of devices under the codename “Scarlett”, including a low-cost version following a similar scheme with the Xbox One family of consoles, with major emphasis on game streaming and backward compatibility. By March 2019, further industry rumors had led to speculation of two consoles under the Scarlett family under codenames “Anaconda” and the low-cost “Lockhart” version.
Microsoft confirmed Project Scarlett at its E3 2019 press conference. During a presentation at The Game Awards 2019, Microsoft officially revealed the design of Scarlett and its branding, “Xbox Series X”, as well as a late-2020 release date. Microsoft unveiled Xbox Series X alongside the latest revision of its controller, building upon the proven Xbox One design with further enhancements. The signature addition is a new dedicated “Share” button, mimicking the feature popularized by the PlayStation 4’s DualShock and the Nintendo Switch. The key enables fast video and screenshot capture and sharing, building upon the Game DVR from Xbox One.
That pairs with a new hybrid D-Pad inspired by the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller, circular-shaped with five defined square surfaces. Textured trigger grips come standard, which makes a huge difference compared to Xbox One.
Speaking with Xbox leadership, GameSpot also detailed an “ever-so-slightly smaller” controller silhouette for Xbox Series X, in response to user research. While a subtle change, Microsoft hoped to nail down ergonomics across the broadest range of Xbox buyers. The proprietary Xbox Wireless protocol also returns, extending efforts to reduce input latency.

Xbox Series X Vs Ps: Specs
When it comes to specs, both Sony and Microsoft have taken a similar approach, though there are a few key differences to point out.
The PlayStation 5 is powered by a custom-built version of the third generation AMD Ryzen chipset, packing in eight cores with the company’s new Zen 2 architecture and Navi graphics. The CPU runs at 3.5GHz. The GPU offers 36 compute units running at 2.23GHz and offering 10.28TFLOPs. Those parts are paired with 16GB of GDDR6 with a bandwidth of 448GB/s. It means the PS5 is able to support features like ray tracing a performance-intensive lighting technique that has previously been reserved to expensive high-end PC GPUs, and which we now know will be “built into the GPU hardware” for the PS5.
The PS5 will also support screen resolutions of up to 8K far higher than the standard 1080p HD of most peoples televisions, let alone that of the increasingly popular 4K. Itll also work at 120Hz refresh rates, allowing for super-smooth movement in games if you have a HDMI 2.1 compliant display. These are incredibly performance-intensive specs, so we wouldnt expect a game to hit these standards regularly , but the PS5 will at least make 4K/60fps a more common sight.
The controller also still has a headphone jack but now includes a built-in microphone. If you don’t have a headset to hand, you can party chat just using the controller or send a voice message to a friend.
The Xbox Series X, meanwhile, is incredibly impressive on paper.

Its not unusual for console manufacturers to offer a couple of different hardware options at launch, but normally, the differences are minor. The PS3, for example, was initially available in two models. There was a version with a 60GB hard drive as well as a cheaper version with a smaller 20GB hard drive, no Wi-Fi support, and fewer ports. Meanwhile, Microsoft also originally sold a Core version of the Xbox 360 in 2005, which included compromises like including a wired rather than wireless controller and omitting a hard drive.

The Xbox Series Xs Fancy Graphics Are Bested By Quality
Having bounced between platforms while reviewing the Xbox Series X, I must say that I prefer it above my other options. Stuck at home during the pandemic, I rarely use my Android phone for streaming games. My PC is nice, but after work, I prefer time on the couch. The Xbox Series X has spoiled me with the snap-fast loading times compared to its predecessor, and the graphics that take full advantage of our nice TV, rather than the 10-year-old 1080p display in my office, which had sufficed for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 generation.
Without any new exclusives, Ive spent most of my time revisiting favorites, like Crackdown, Fusion Frenzy, and Hydro Thunder Hurricane. The consoles auto HDR feature makes them vibrant. Load times on the classics are nearly nonexistent, giving them a new energy and pace that I love. A real pep in their step.
The visual improvements are comparable to those of previous generational leaps: relatively simple graphical upgrades at launch, giving everything a nice paint job. We wont see the real potential of this hardware for a couple of years, as developers learn how to optimize it to its full capabilities.
Does any of this make for a splashy commercial? Nope. But it does make for a reliable, pleasurable experience. The console disappears, letting me focus on the games. Thats the point.

Xbox Series X Review: Controller
Ever since Microsoft came up with the Xbox 360 controller, Ive been a fan of the Xbox controllers, and the new Xbox Wireless Controller is a neat evolution of its predecessor. Though glance at the peripheral, and youd be hard-pressed to spot any major differences from the Xbox One controller.
But thats not a bad thing, as its a fantastic controller. Small improvements like textured triggers and an improved D-pad take a familiar controller and simply make it better.
The Xbox Wireless Controller has long been one of the most comfortable controllers Ive used, taking the Xbox 360 controller and building upon it. And the same is true with the new controller, though it does have a few extra features.
From a quick glance, the most notable change is the addition of a share button for sharing screenshots and recordings with a simple tap. Youll then notice that the D-pad is a hybrid one: a concave disk that should deliver more precision, particularly if you play traditional beat-em-ups. The finish on the new controller has a more matte look, with the black appearing smokier. The Xbox button is also now all-black.
The new controller fits my hands almost exactly like its predecessor. The triggers are slightly smaller and feel a little more tactile, as do the shoulder buttons. And the joysticks have a firmer, more satisfying click to them than those on the older controller.
