Case in point: the Xbox Series X is fully backward compatible with all Xbox One games. This is even better than backwards compatibility because supported games will effectively be native Series X games, even if you bought the boxed Xbox One version.

Microsoft recently announced the prices of the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X , and they came in lower than some might have imagined, especially the lower-spec S model. The consoles were intentionally priced low, and Microsoft is launching the phone-style subscription plan, to make it easier to get people into the Xbox ecosystem and then start spending money on games, according to Xbox CFO Tim Stuart.

Stuart told Barron’s that the aggressive pricing for the Series S/X consoles will help Microsoft “kick-start” the new generation.
“Our goal was to increase that top-of-funnel as fast as possible, get people into the ecosystem, get people into that next-gen experience, and frankly kind of kick-start this generation as fast as we can,” Stuart said. “If you can get that install base as big as you can up front, you have customers enjoying the next-gen experiences we have to offer. And from a business side, we start to monetize and build a customer lifetime value much faster than a slow build over time.”
Initial Unveiling And Launch
Industry rumors of new Xbox hardware had started as early as June 2018, with Microsoft’s Phil Spencer confirming they were “deep into architecturing the next Xbox consoles” at that time. The hardware was believed to be a family of devices under the codename “Scarlett”, including a low-cost version following a similar scheme as the Xbox One family of consoles, with major emphasis on game streaming and backward compatibility. By March 2019, further industry rumors had led to speculation of two consoles within the Scarlett family under codenames “Anaconda” and the low-cost “Lockhart” version.
Microsoft confirmed Project Scarlett at its E3 2019 press conference. Microsoft said they wanted a “soft” transition from Xbox One to Scarlett, with Scarlett supporting backward compatibility with all games and most hardware supported on the Xbox One. During a presentation at The Game Awards 2019, Microsoft officially revealed the design of Scarlett and its branding, “Xbox Series X”, as well as a late 2020 release date. Following the event, a Microsoft spokesperson stated that Xbox Series X constituted an entry in a fourth generation of Xbox hardware, which will be branded simply as “Xbox” with no subtitle.
On July 16, 2020, Microsoft announced that it had ended production of the Xbox One X and all-digital version of the Xbox One S in preparation for the new products.

How Much Will The Xbox Series X Cost
The Series X’s price was also unveiled the same day its release date was announced. Microsoft’s premium console will cost $499 up-front or customers can opt for a payment plan and receive a number of other perks.
For 24 monthly payments of $35, gamers can get the Series X along with the Xbox All Access which comes with 24 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. That gives users access to a monthly catalog of free games that rotate every month. Microsoft seems keenly aware that the economic uncertainty brought on by the coronavirus pandemic will influence how much money customers have to spend on games and is trying to make even its priciest console as accessible as possible.
In a June 2020 interview with the BBC, Xbox chief Phil Spencer noted that he was well aware of how important a reasonable price point will be this year with the economic hardships that have befallen many people around the world because of the coronavirus pandemic.
” strategy is centered around the player, not the device,” he said. “We see the impact of people getting furloughed and layoffs. It’s tough. And we are a leisure activity. We’re not a requirement … So we want to be really tuned in to that as we launch. How can we make it as affordable as possible? How can we give buyers choice?”

What’s New In The Xbox One S
There’s a short but significant list of improvements and changes to the Xbox One S.
Smaller, cleaner design: To start, it’s 40 percent smaller, which considering its power supply is now internal, is impressive. It’s also stark white, with some slick plastic moldings flanking the entirety of the box. I think it’s the best-looking Xbox Microsoft has ever designed.
The One S can also stand vertically, too. The 2TB model we received for review packs in a stand. If you buy one of the other models, you can get the stand separately for $20.
4K and HDR video: Xbox One S gets a fairly beefy upgrade on its video capabilities, with 4K resolution and HDR . Keep in mind: those features only work on compatible TVs and 4K functionality only works with a small but growing list of compatible video content. 4K can currently be accessed through streaming video services such as Amazon and Netflix and those new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Certain games, meanwhile, will eventually be able to take advantage of HDR visual improvements, but don’t look for PC-like 4K graphics — the games are merely upscaled to 4K.
So no, you’re not getting native 4K gaming out of an Xbox One S. In fact, only a limited number of games will feature HDR and none of them are out yet. They are Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3 and 2017’s Scalebound.
