    Initial Announcement And Content Acquisitions

My First Ever Xbox – XBOX Series S First Impressions

Gates first publicly mentioned the Xbox in an interview in late 1999, stating that he wanted the system “to be the platform of choice for the best and most creative game developers in the world”. It was later announced officially by Gates in a keynote presentation at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose on March 10, 2000, showing off an early prototype build of the system and a series of demos showcasing its hardware. The presentation and the new system were well-received, impressing developers with both the hard drive and the Ethernet port and appealing to them with the notion of easy-to-use development tools.

Microsoft began looking at a series of acquisitions and partnerships to secure content for the console at this time. In early 2000, Sega’s Dreamcast sales were diminishing, in part due to Electronic Arts‘ decision to bypass the console, and Sony’s PlayStation 2 was just going on sale in Japan. Gates was in talks with Sega’s late chairman Isao Okawa about the possibility of Xbox compatibility with Dreamcast games, but negotiations fell apart over whether the Dreamcast’s SegaNet online service should be implemented. Microsoft also looked to acquire Electronic Arts, Nintendo, Square Enix, and Midway without success. The company did achieve success in convincing developers at Bethesda Game Studios and Tecmo about the power of the Xbox over the PS2, lining up The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Dead or Alive 3 as Xbox console-exclusives.

Originally labeled Project Natal , the device was expected to revolutionize the way 360 owners interacted with both their console and the media connected with it. The Kinect arrived on shelves in November of that year.

One year after the Kinect was announced, Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 would be getting a major redesign, with a thinner body, upgraded internal specs, additional USB ports, and built-in Wi-Fi. The Xbox 360 S hit shelves a few days later on June 18, 2010.

    Second Generation: Xbox 360

    Xbox Original [B]

The Xbox 360 was released as the successor of the original Xbox in November 2005, competing with Sony‘s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo‘s Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. As of June 2014, 84 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold worldwide. The Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005, with detailed launch and game information divulged later that month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo . The console sold out completely upon release in all regions except in Japan. Several retail configurations of the core Xbox 360 model were offered over its lifetime, varying the amount of RAM and internal storage offered.

The Xbox 360 showed an expanded Xbox Live service , the ability to stream multimedia content from PCs, while later updates added the ability to purchase and stream music, television programs, and films through the Xbox Music and Xbox Video services, along with access to third-party content services through third-party media streaming applications. Microsoft also released Kinect, a motion control system for the Xbox 360 which uses an advanced sensor system.

    Bits And System Power

Bit ratings for consoles largely fell by the wayside after the era. The number of “bits” cited in console names referred to the size, but there was little to be gained from increasing the word size much beyond 32 bits performance depended on other factors, such as speed, speed, , size, and memory speed, , and size.

The importance of the number of in the modern console gaming market has thus decreased due to the use of components that process data in varying word sizes. Previously, console manufacturers advertised the “n-bit talk” to over-emphasize the hardware capabilities of their system. The Dreamcast and the PlayStation 2 were the last systems to use the term “128-bit” in their marketing to describe their capability.

It is not easy to compare the relative “power” of the different systems. Having a larger CPU word size does not necessarily make one console more powerful than another. Likewise, the operating frequency of a system’s CPU is not an accurate measure of performance either, except between systems of the same or similar architecture.

The Microsoft uses a 32-bit x86 architecture CPU, with an instruction set equal to that of the Coppermine core Mobile , though it has less cache than the PC equivalent. It has 64 MB RAM and runs at 733 MHz. Because the Pentium 3 introduced , the Xbox also had 128-bit SIMD capabilities. Its NV2A, which is very similar to the of desktop GPUs, makes it the only console in its time with traditional vertex and pixel .

    Rise Of Online Gaming

, which in previous generations had been almost an exclusive domain of PC games, became more prominent in video game consoles during this generation. The initiated this change with its built in , internet browsing software, and ability to play certain games online. The , and also offered online gaming, though their approaches and commitment to it varied greatly. The Xbox offered an integrated service called that cost $50 per year and was only compatible with a . Its ability to connect gamers for online multi-player matches was a considerable factor in allowing the Xbox to gain a foothold in the western market, especially in the first-person shooter genre. The PlayStation 2 left its online gaming service up to each individual game publisher, and though it was free to use, it was not always an ideal experience, especially with games published by small developers. The series was one of the most popular online competitive games for the PS2. The GameCube did not offer online play for any of its first-party titles, with only Sega’s series and making official use of the console’s online capabilities. In addition, online capability was not out-of-the-box an adapter was needed to hook the GameCube to the internet.

Fourth Generation: Xbox Series X And Series S

The fourth generation of Xbox models, simply named Xbox, includes the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S that launched on November 10, 2020. Both are considered members of the ninth generation of video game consoles alongside the PlayStation 5, also released that month.

The Xbox Series X and Series S are high- and low-end versions comparable to the Xbox One X and Xbox One S models, respectively, with all games designed for this model family playable on both systems. The Xbox Series X is estimated to be four times as powerful as Xbox One X, with support for 8K resolution and up to 120 frames-per-second rendering, with a nominal target of 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. The Xbox Series S is a digital-only unit with less graphic processing power, but can still render at a nominal 1440p resolution at 60 frames per second with support for 4K upscaling. Both consoles features support for new graphics rendering systems including real-time ray-tracing, and the new Xbox Velocity Architecture that works with the internal SSD drive to maximize the rate of texture streaming to the graphics processor, among other features. Besides games for this new console family, both consoles are fully compatible with all Xbox One games and most hardware, as well as all backward compatible games that were playable on the Xbox One from the Xbox 360 and original Xbox console.

Which Xbox Series Console Should I Buy

Top 10 Best Original Xbox Games

A couple of factors to consider when choosing which of the newest Xbox consoles to buy are price and availability. Your preferred Xbox Series console will largely come down to your budget and / or willingness to wait on new stock.

That’s because the Xbox Series X is often fairly difficult to come by, thanks in large part to the ongoing global chip shortages that aren’t just affecting availability of Xbox Series X and PS5, but also PC graphics cards and servers needed for online games.

Even if you do have an easy time finding Xbox Series X stock, its higher price tag is another matter. At $499 / £449, it’s certainly the more premium of Microsoft’s two current-gen machines.

The Xbox Series S is a good deal cheaper at $299 / $249, making it a fantastic option if you want an easier way to explore the Xbox ecosystem, and get access to services like the fantastic Xbox Game Pass. The Xbox Series S, by and large, is also much easier to buy thanks to a more reliable level of availability at online retailers.

Now that you understand which Xbox is the newest, and how to differentiate the Xbox Series X/S from the older Xbox One line-up of consoles, you should be better prepared to make an informed purchase on the right Xbox model for you or your gift recipient.

Remember that while Microsoft retains its X/S naming convention usage, the key signifier here is the use of “Series” over “One” – with the former nomenclature representing the newest and best that the Xbox brand has to offer.
