Xbox Series X Review: Games
On the whole, there aren’t a huge amout of new Xbox Series X games that are exclusive for the console. And neither will there be, as games will also need to be playable on the Xbox Series S, as well as come to Windows 10, and soon Windows 11, PCs.
However, the Xbox Series X and Series S will have upcoming console exclusives in the from of Halo Infinite, Fable 4 and Starfield, as well as a bevy of other titles checkout our recap of the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase at E3 2021 for a full breakdown.
But while you wait for those games there’s a bevy of Xbox Series X and Series S enhanced games to play. The likes of Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 4, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and Destiny 2: Beyond Light and Sea of Thieves will all run better on the Xbox Series X than other Xbox hardware. Do bear in mind that some games will chew through SSD space, including the upcoming Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl.
Xbox Series X Design: What Does The Xbox Series X Look Like
A trailer revealed what the new Xbox Series X looks like and it has a whole new look. The shape of the device is different from its predecessor, oblong in shape and when upright looking more like a gaming PC with a prominent curved grill on top- its a good looking console.
The Xbox Series X has an upright tower design like a gaming PC, but you can sit it horizontally as well vertically. The console in the trailer is black with cooling vent indents on the top. The light inside looks green. The logo is in the top left-hand corner and theres a disc drive vertically.
Port wise theres the HDMI 2.1 output port, three USB 3.2 ports, one networking port and an expanded storage slot and a power input port.
Size wise its 15.1cm x 151.cm and 30.1cm and weighs 4.45kg/9/8lbs.

Xbox One Vs Xbox One S: Design
The part talks about Xbox One vs Xbox One S for design. The Xbox One shell is black, and the Xbox One S uses a white shell. But more impressive than the new color scheme is that the Xbox One S is 40% smaller than the Xbox One. Xbox One S measures 13.1 x 10.8 x 3.1 inches, and Xbox One measures 11.6 x 8.9 x 2.5 inches.
Microsoft has now begun to plug the original Xbox Ones external power brick into the Xbox One S. Another huge design difference between these two game consoles is that the Xbox One S can now also stand vertical. In this way, it can occupy a smaller volume next to the TV.
What To Look For When Buying The Best Xbox Console

Microsoft enters a new generation with twin consoles, succeeding the various Xbox One revisions and leaving buyers with more choices than ever in 2021. While the latest and greatest Xbox Series X may prove “best” in performance and overall functionality, it’s far from the only recommended console. Devices like Xbox Series S deliver a comprehensive experience for less, while even the former Xbox One family holds incredible value for newcomers. But with Xbox stock limited right now, continue to look out for the best Xbox deals.
Your choice mostly comes down to personal preference, considering which Xbox console aligns with your needs. The Xbox Series X leaps ahead in gaming, pushing the best visuals up to 4K and 120 FPS in some scenarios, alleviating common bottlenecks with the past hardware generation. It’s the unbeaten gaming experience right now, especially when hooked up to a great 4K TV.
The Xbox Series S is an equally compelling pick in value terms, providing many next-generation signatures for just $300. The price nets you a console that runs all the latest games well, plus the overhead to deliver steady experiences for years.
When shopping for a new Xbox console, take your time to consider the specifications and features and how they align with your needs. But no matter which Xbox console you choose, the right one likely won’t disappoint.

Xbox Series X Hardware And Design
The Xbox Series X casts a commanding silhouette. It’s a monolithic slab of matte black plastic that stands 11.8 inches tall, 5.9 inches deep, 5.9 inches wide, and weighs in at 9.8 pounds. On its face, you’ll find a pairing button that handily conceals an IR receiver, a 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port, and an Xbox logo power button that lightly glows white while you play.
While the Xbox One was built to fade into the background of your home entertainment centre, the Xbox Series X is designed to quietly dominate it. If you can find a suitable place to stand it , it’ll soon feel like another fixture not unlike that of a PC tower. The Series X doesn’t draw attention to itself, like the provocatively designed PS5 an angular mass complete with pulsing strips of blue lighting that seems purpose-built to attract the eye.
Even with all of these system-intensive features in play, I have been pleasantly surprised to find that the console runs quietly and efficiently, even after lengthy sessions with games optimised for Xbox Series X. The console also runs considerably cooler than the Xbox One X, although there is clearly some expectation that owners will think carefully about where they place the Xbox Series X so that air is able to flow unimpeded from behind the console and up through the curved venting array that sits at the north end of the console.

Which Xbox Should You Buy
We’ll have to see both systems ourselves and put them through their paces to really know which is the better value. Based on the specs and features, the Xbox Series X seems superior across the board, with much more processing power and the ability to render at 4K, along with double the storage and an optical drive for physical media. It’s much bigger and more expensive, however, so if budget and space are concerns for you, the Xbox Series S looks to be a respectable system with plenty of power in its own right, though the lack of a disc drive is a distinct weakness.
We’ll update this story as we learn more about the new systems, so make sure to check back. And if you already know which one you want, head over to our story on how to pre-order the new Xbox.

The Most Powerful Xbox Ever
Early on in the design of Xbox Series X, the team was determinedto deliver the most powerful Xbox ever, which opened a series of discussions abouthow to define power in the next generation of consoles. In past generations, power has been defined primarily by graphics innovation: from the transitionfrom 8 bit to 16 bit graphics, 2D to 3D, SD to HD and finally to 4K.
Today, gamers are demanding more and more games run at 60frames per second with high visual fidelity and precise, responsiveinput. Developers have come up with creative solutions, such as dynamicresolution scaling, to maintain high image quality while not compromising onframe rate, but this is often done to work around the limitations andconstraints of current generation hardware. Thats all about to change withXbox Series X. Its not just about making games look better, though. Its aboutmaking games play better too.
Whilethe Xbox Series X will deliver a massive increase in GPU performance andcontinue to redefine and advance the state of art in graphics with newcapabilities such as hardware accelerated raytracing, said Jason Ronald, Directorof Product Management on Xbox Series X, we dont believe this generation willbe defined by graphics or resolution alone.

Xbox Series X Vs Xbox One X Price
The Xbox Series X costs $499 / £449 / AU$749, and matches the original MSRP of the Xbox One X. While this is, admittedly, very expensive, the Xbox Series X packs a lot of technology into its cuboid frame.
The problem right now is that the console is notoriously hard to find, with stock continuing to snapped up as soon as it appears, which can make it hard to find where to buy Xbox Series X.
However, the Xbox One X has had big price cuts over the past few months. Weve seen the console drop well below its original asking price, but as Microsoft has since discontinued the Xbox One X, stock is becoming harder to find. If you do see an enticing deal, then, its worth snapping it up straight away.
New Xbox Series X Features

One new Xbox feature is thats coming soon is Microsofts new cloud streaming service called Xbox Cloud Gaming, which is included as part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Similar to or Geforce Now, it will allow you to stream games from the cloud onto your device. This way you can bypass download, install, and update times to hop right into the game or demo. As of now, its available on mobile, PC, and consoles.
Thanks to its access to the massive Xbox content library, Microsoft is already touting its superiority over other budding cloud gaming services like Stadia. Theres also Remote Play for those that want to stream directly from their console to mobile devices. This is far more stable, though youll still have to suffer through some input lag when playing. Nevertheless, its a handy option to have when someone else wants to take over the TV and youre not quite ready to quit.
Once games are installed, the upgraded SSD should drastically reduce load times in-game vs the HDDs of older-gen Xbox consoles. While it is a hair shy of the PS5s new storage speeds, it does have a slightly larger capacity, so it should fit more games. Either way, its a massive upgrade from current-gen consoles that will be felt in every game you play new or old.
The Xbox Series X can add HDR and improve framerates of Xbox One and Xbox 360 games.

Xbox Series X Backwards Compatibility
The Xbox Series X has a custom processor with eight AMD Zen 2 CPU cores, and a 12 Teraflop RDNA 2 GPU. That pairing means that the console can target performance of eight times the original Xbox One and twice that of the Xbox One X, with the new Xbox Series X able to execute games at a native 4K resolution and at 60 frames per second with little compromise. There are few new games at launch that will truly take advantage of this power, and so it’s, the way the powerful CPU can work in tandem with the SSD to automatically enhance backwards compatible games that will reflect the most obvious next-generation upgrades.
The Xbox Series X has full backwards compatibility for Xbox One games, and it supports any Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles that worked on that system too. Legacy titles run natively on Series X, which means that the thousands of available games automatically benefit from performance of CPU and SSD. Every game I have tested has seen significant reductions in load times lowering by as much as 70% in some cases. Typically, games run smoother, enjoy steadier framerates, and more stable transitions between the action and menu-based admin.
Xbox Series X And Series S Controller
The fourth generation Xbox Controller doesn’t change much from the Xbox One controller, but the new wireless Xbox Controller does add a capture and share button, a hybrid d-pad, and better gripping on the bumpers and triggers. The controller is also promised to be cross compatible with certain PC’s and mobile devices.

Why Is The Xbox Tough To Find
Essentially, Microsoft hasn’t been able to get the materials it needs to make enough Xbox consoles to meet demand. As with the PlayStation 5 and most PC video cards, there’s a chip shortage right now that is slowing supply. The pandemic affected production for a lot of chip manufacturers, and industry watchers currently don’t expect the issue to be entirely resolved until the end of the year.
As a result, Microsoft makes as many consoles as it can and distributes them among its retail partners. Each retailer releases its available consoles in whatever way it deems appropriate. Most of the time, this means announcing ahead of time when you’ll be able to buy the console online and then releasing it for anyone to buy.

Xbox Series X Review: Controller
Ever since Microsoft came up with the Xbox 360 controller, Ive been a fan of the Xbox controllers, and the new Xbox Wireless Controller is a neat evolution of its predecessor. Though glance at the peripheral, and youd be hard-pressed to spot any major differences from the Xbox One controller.
But thats not a bad thing, as its a fantastic controller. Small improvements like textured triggers and an improved D-pad take a familiar controller and simply make it better.
The Xbox Wireless Controller has long been one of the most comfortable controllers Ive used, taking the Xbox 360 controller and building upon it. And the same is true with the new controller, though it does have a few extra features.
From a quick glance, the most notable change is the addition of a share button for sharing screenshots and recordings with a simple tap. Youll then notice that the D-pad is a hybrid one: a concave disk that should deliver more precision, particularly if you play traditional beat-em-ups. The finish on the new controller has a more matte look, with the black appearing smokier. The Xbox button is also now all-black.
The new controller fits my hands almost exactly like its predecessor. The triggers are slightly smaller and feel a little more tactile, as do the shoulder buttons. And the joysticks have a firmer, more satisfying click to them than those on the older controller.
