What Is The New Xbox Console Called

Don't Miss

You Can Still Play Your Old Gamesand Theyll Look Better

*NEW* Xbox is CRAZY! (First Look)

If you want to get the new system but dont see many new games youre interested in, virtually all of your old games will work on the new consoles. The Xbox Series X and Series S offer nearly blanket backward compatibility, meaning that your existing libraries of Xbox Onecompatible software will run on the Xbox Series X and Series S. Whats more, every Xbox Onecompatible piece of software will, according to Microsoft , run and look better on these new systems than it did on previous-generation consoles. The Auto HDR feature, which uses an algorithm to tweak a games picture to take advantage of modern televisions ability to show brighter images with better contrast, leads to a beautiful new sense of vibrance in games like Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2. There are a few games where this feature results in image quality that looks a little funny, but it can be disabled on a per game basis.

Microsoft also recently introduced FPS Boost, the official term for a proprietary software technique that allows the Xbox Series consoles to effectively double the targeted framerate of backwards compatible games without the need for official patches from the original developer. For some games, this means 60 FPS or thereabouts for the first time on consoles. For others, it means 120 FPS with supported televisions.

Quick Resume Acts Like The Ultimate Pause Button

Using their fast storage access, the Xbox Series X and Series S allow you to suspend almost any game by creating a snapshot of it in system memory. You can then start another game, watch a movie, or even turn off and completely unplug your console. The next time you start the game in question, itll pick up exactly where you left off. Its a lot like switching between open apps on a smartphone, and you can do it with several games at once. Games already boot up faster on the new consoles because of their storage speed, and if youre playing more than one thing, switching between games using quick resume saves a lot of time and frustration because you skip any menus and save/load screens that you might otherwise be forced to navigate. And in the few months weve been using the console, every time we boot up a game for the first time in weeks only to load up exactly where we left off in seconds is a delightful experience.

Initially, Quick Resume support was somewhat spotty, with several games encountering problems with the feature but recent patches have improved overall stability, though there are still occasional, unavoidable issues. For titles like the 2018 remaster of Dark Souls, which uses an always online server system, Quick Resume just about always results in a server disconnect, which will boot you to the title screen .

Which Xbox Is The Newest A Brief Timeline Of Microsoft’s Latest Consoles

Make sure you’re buying the right Xbox console

If you’ve been tasked with buying an Xbox either for yourself or as a gift, but aren’t quite sure which Xbox is the newest, then you’ve come to the right place. It’s admittedly easy for Xbox’s obtuse naming conventions to trip up consumers who aren’t as tech-savvy or as in the know, so we’re here to make sure you don’t accidentally end up buying the wrong model.

Over the last decade, we’ve had several different Xbox models launch, all at varying price points and nomenclature to better tell them apart from other models. We feel Microsoft could have done a better job at the naming system for its consoles, though, especially if you’re new to Xbox in general and don’t understand what consoles came before the latest systems.

If you’re feeling a bit lost when trying to figure out which Xbox is the newest, fear not. The following guide will walk you through not only the latest Xbox models but also the older ones that you may wish to avoid if you’re shopping for the latest and greatest consoles Microsoft has to offer.

New Xbox Series X Features

One new Xbox feature is thats coming soon is Microsofts new cloud streaming service called Xbox Cloud Gaming, which is included as part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Similar to or Geforce Now, it will allow you to stream games from the cloud onto your device. This way you can bypass download, install, and update times to hop right into the game or demo. As of now, its available on mobile, PC, and consoles.

Thanks to its access to the massive Xbox content library, Microsoft is already touting its superiority over other budding cloud gaming services like Stadia. Theres also Remote Play for those that want to stream directly from their console to mobile devices. This is far more stable, though youll still have to suffer through some input lag when playing. Nevertheless, its a handy option to have when someone else wants to take over the TV and youre not quite ready to quit.

Once games are installed, the upgraded SSD should drastically reduce load times in-game vs the HDDs of older-gen Xbox consoles. While it is a hair shy of the PS5s new storage speeds, it does have a slightly larger capacity, so it should fit more games. Either way, its a massive upgrade from current-gen consoles that will be felt in every game you play new or old.

The Xbox Series X can add HDR and improve framerates of Xbox One and Xbox 360 games.

Microsoft Is Already Building The Next Xbox Consoles And Streaming

Today, the contents of a pre-recorded E3 Xbox panel came to light as we heard from Microsoft execs on their plans for what is now effectively known as the Xbox ecosystem, something that expands beyond traditional consoles, and blends them with Game Pass accessibility and game streaming.

The highlights? That would be Microsoft talking about how theyre already working on the next Xbox consoles. Heres VP Liz Hamren:

no one should think were slowing down on our core console engineering. In fact, were accelerating it. Were already hard at work on new hardware and platforms, some of which wont come to light for years.

Its not clear whether this is a mid-gen upgrade like the Xbox One X, or the next true generation, though such distinctions may be getting more and more blurry regardless.

Past that, onto Game Pass accessibility via smart TVs:

Were working with global TV manufacturers to embed the Game Pass experience directly into internet-connected TVs, so all youll need to play is a controller.

And to further boost this new game streaming-centric future, Xbox will also be building dedicated devices just for that purpose, ones which will cost far less than a traditional Xbox at $300-500, no doubt:

Beyond that, were also developing stand-alone streaming devices that you can plug into a TV or monitor, so if you have a strong internet connection you can stream your Xbox experience.

Best Xbox Console 2021

Microsoft’s Xbox consoles allow you to play thousands of hours of action-packed video games, plus all the entertainment features to satisfy the living room. The arrival of Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S means you have more options than ever, but the Xbox One family is still far from obsolete in 2021. Whether you need the best in 4K gaming or an affordable way to play, we’ve rounded up the best Xbox consoles to help you decide which is best for you.

Microsofts Two New Consoles

This week, Microsoft released its two new Xbox consoles. Theres the $499 Xbox Series X, and a cheaper $299 Xbox Series S. You can read our reviews of both of them by following the links below.

Xbox Series S review

Its not unusual for console manufacturers to offer a couple of different hardware options at launch, but normally, the differences are minor. The PS3, for example, was initially available in two models. There was a version with a 60GB hard drive as well as a cheaper version with a smaller 20GB hard drive, no Wi-Fi support, and fewer ports. Meanwhile, Microsoft also originally sold a Core version of the Xbox 360 in 2005, which included compromises like including a wired rather than wireless controller and omitting a hard drive.

The differences between the Xbox Series S and Series X are more substantial and have a big impact on how games look. While Microsoft says the Series X is targeting running games at 60fps at a full 4K resolution, the Series S instead targets a lower 1440p resolution at 60fps. Its a big power disparity, similar to what we saw between the Xbox One and the Xbox One X, but this time, the two consoles were available on day one, rather than releasing years apart.

The Xbox Series X comes complete with a disc drive.Microsofts Series S is less powerful and digital-only.

Xbox One Reveal Trailer. “Xbox One” Next Gen Console New Controller (not called “Xbox 720”)

The Xbox Series S costs $299.99, a whopping $200 less than the Xbox Series X, priced at $499.99. This low price is welcome news, especially during this pandemic craziness.

If you dont want to spend that large sum of money all at once, you also have the option to subscribe to Xbox All Access. With Xbox All Access, you can get an Xbox Series X or Series S console and 24 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Plans start at $24.99/month for 24 months. Thats a great deal if you were already planning to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which costs $14.99 on its own.

Availability was somewhat limited at launch, but things have improved greatly since then. The same cannot be said about Series X and PS5, which continue to be nearly impossible to find. Check both retailers below often, and before you know it, youll be next-gen gaming!

Xbox Series X Price: Streaming Apps

Pre-launch, Microsoft confirmed which streaming apps are available on the Xbox Series X. The big news? The list includes the Apple TV app. That puts the console on a par with Sony’s PS5.

The consoles also run all streaming apps currently available for the Xbox One consoles, with a few exceptions. The BBC iPlayer app didn’t work on Xbox Series X/S at launch but Microsoft has now rectified that.

So far the list includes :

Xbox Series X Review: Controller

Ever since Microsoft came up with the Xbox 360 controller, Ive been a fan of the Xbox controllers, and the new Xbox Wireless Controller is a neat evolution of its predecessor. Though glance at the peripheral, and youd be hard-pressed to spot any major differences from the Xbox One controller.

But thats not a bad thing, as its a fantastic controller. Small improvements like textured triggers and an improved D-pad take a familiar controller and simply make it better.

The Xbox Wireless Controller has long been one of the most comfortable controllers Ive used, taking the Xbox 360 controller and building upon it. And the same is true with the new controller, though it does have a few extra features.

From a quick glance, the most notable change is the addition of a share button for sharing screenshots and recordings with a simple tap. Youll then notice that the D-pad is a hybrid one: a concave disk that should deliver more precision, particularly if you play traditional beat-em-ups. The finish on the new controller has a more matte look, with the black appearing smokier. The Xbox button is also now all-black.

The new controller fits my hands almost exactly like its predecessor. The triggers are slightly smaller and feel a little more tactile, as do the shoulder buttons. And the joysticks have a firmer, more satisfying click to them than those on the older controller.

Xbox Series X Xbox Live

Xbox Live has always been the backbone of the Xbox ecosystem and a new generation would traditionally introduce new innovations to the service. Last generation, Microsoft used the Xbox One launch to raise the friends list from 100 to 1000, made a number of quality-of-life improvements, and built a ‘Smart Match’ system that sought to improve matchmaking. Given how closely the Xbox Series X is intertwined with the Xbox One in service of forwards and backwards compatibility, we aren’t seeing the same degree of innovation or evolution. Everything has to be consistent across both generations, and across platforms encompassing PC and Android devices thanks to xCloud and Remote Play.

With the Xbox Series X wired into the broader Xbox ecosystem, you’ll find that there are no new restrictions on who you can play with, party with, or send messages to. Xbox Live recognises Xbox Series X as another console on the network and, as a result, I haven’t experienced any problems jumping into rounds of Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone with Xbox One and PS4 players, nor did I notice any problems or disadvantages when playing Gears 5 multiplayer at 120fps with Xbox One players who are locked to 60fps.

The Xbox Series S Has Some Of The Xbox Series Xs Best Features And Performs Great For The Price

The next gen Xbox is just called Xbox says Microsoft

Despite being the cheapest current gaming console out there, the Series S still feels distinctly next-gen, largely because it has a lot of the same key features as the pricier Series X. Modern games are practically devoid of loading times, thanks to the solid-state drive packed inside, but its the Quick Resume feature that actually impacted the way I play games during my first few weeks with the console.

Available on both the Series X and S, Quick Resume lets you have a handful of games open at once and pick up right where you left off when you switch between them. So when I take a break from Halo: The Master Chief Collection for some retro shooting action in Doom 64, I can hop right into my paused game rather than booting up the title all over again. Its one of the best innovations of this console generation and is something the PS5 doesnt offer.

I typically stick to one or two games at a time, but the convenience of Quick Resume combined with the endless buffet of games on Xbox Game Pass made me want to try out more titles at once. I quickly found myself downloading and jumping between games I might not have otherwise tried out, such as Xenocrisis and Rage 2, since the console does a great job removing a lot of the waiting that comes with booting up a video game. The feature also works over long spans of time I was often shocked to see my Halo game still suspended after not touching it for weeks.

Xbox Series S Specs And Features What’s Different

The first thing to note is that the Xbox Series S is much cheaper, at £249/$299.

That’s because it’s an all-digital console with no disc tray keeping costs down.

Sony has already offered up much the same with its new PS5, which comes in non-digital and digital variants.

And Microsoft arguably spearheaded this trend with its all-digital Xbox One S, which came out last year.

So it’s really no surprise that the Xbox Series S exists.

Microsoft’s cheaper model still stands vertically, but looks to be about half the width.

And rather than being all-black like the Series X, the Series S has a white design with a large dark circle on its front.

Xbox Series X Price: Game Bundles

Some of the biggest titles are usually partnered with a new console. This year’s instalments include FIFA 21, Fortnite, Rainbow SixSiege and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

We know that Microsoft has teamed up with EA to bring over 60 of EA’s biggest games to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which gives you access to 100+ games stored in the cloud.

Halo Infinite would likely have been the most-wanted launch title, and the most popular bundle, but 343 Industries, the studio in charge of the game, announced that it’s delayed until November 2021. Which could make the perfect Christmas present for the gamer in your life…
