The Rise And Fall Of Kinect: Why Microsoft Gave Up On Its Most Promising Product
On Tuesday, Microsoft announced it had discontinued the USB adapter for the Kinect sensor, a pioneering motion-sensing accessory line for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One that sold almost 30 million units in its lifetime.
Microsoft had discontinued the Kinect sensor itself in the Fall of 2017.
The Kinect was a huge bet for Microsoft, but it didn’t pay off the technology wasn’t quite reliable enough, the games weren’t as good as they could be, and the novelty wore off.
The death of the Kinect has been a long time coming, with Microsoft removing the Kinect port from its most recent model of Xbox One consoles.
On Tuesday, Polygon reported that Microsoft had killed the USB adapter for the ahead-of-its-time motion sensor for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. That adapter let the Kinect work with the modern Xbox One S and Xbox One X models, as well as Windows PCs. Microsoft had officially discontinued manufacture of the Kinect sensor itself in the Fall of 2017.
Back in 2015, we took a deep look at the history of the Kinect and its downfall. The story below was originally published on September 8th, 2015, now updated to reflect current facts.
When the Kinect for Xbox 360 was first demonstrated in June 2009, it looked like the future of technology.
But then, after Microsoft sold about 29 million of them for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, it just kind of faded away.

Second Screen And Streaming
The Xbox SmartGlassapp provides extended functionality on Xbox One, allowing devices running Windows Phone, Windows 8, iOS and Android to be used as a companion device for Xbox One features, such as powering on the console, a remote control, accessing messages and the Activity Feed, purchasing content, and providing integration with certain games and content. The SmartGlass app can also be used to stream live television to Android and Windows devices if the console is using a USB digital television tuner.
On Windows 10, SmartGlass is succeeded by the Xbox App, which supports the local streaming of games from Xbox One to personal computers and tablets running Windows 10. An Xbox One controller must be used, but Windows-compatible headsets and microphones can be used for voice chat. Games requiring Kinect are not supported, while Game DVR and online streaming are not available while using this functionality.
Per a partnership with Oculus VR, users will also be able to stream Xbox One games to the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset by means of Xbox app for Windows 10 as of 2015 there were no immediate plans for direct integration between Xbox One and Oculus Rift.

How To Set Up Kinect
The new Xbox Kinect is a completely integral part of the Xbox One experience, encapsulating a brand new component to the console experience for users across the world. As such, manys things are new to the Kinect that might even leave some original adapters of Kinect technology scratching their heads. This How-To looks to answers some of the burning questions regarding the Xbox One‘s Kinect hardware.
What Happened To Kinect
Microsoft’s misunderstood audio-visual peripheral was, at one point, the fastest-selling consumer electronics device of all time, believe it or not, with over 10 million units sold during the first six months after its release. Of course, that was the Xbox 360 version, which was vastly inferior to the “V2” version available on the Xbox One and Windows PCs.
Despite the superior power of Kinect V2, a combination of poor messaging, bad positioning, and lackluster software support led Kinect V2 as an Xbox accessory down the path of obscurity, right into being killed off completely. The technology Kinect spawned lives on as part of HoloLens and Microsoft’s partnered Windows Mixed Reality headsets, and Kinect has been used in a wide array of bespoke projects in various other industries. Where Kinect didn’t shine, however, is with the Xbox One. That’s not to say it was useless. It simply wasn’t allowed to realize its full potential.
To even use a Kinect , you need a pricey adapter for modern Xbox consoles that can be hard to find. However, there are alternative third-party adapters like this one that do seem to do the job. There are so many hurdles to overcome to get your hands on a Kinect that I’d argue it’s not worth the effort.

Best Kinect Games For Xbox One
ByLauren Relphlast updated 21 February 17
Kinect is one of the best accessories you can get for your Xbox One, and it’s not just about the voice controls!
The Kinect was initially bundled as standard with the Xbox One, but Microsoft split them up to lower the console’s cost of entry. Kinect can transform your media experience with voice commands for changing television channels, navigating your console, and even asking Cortana for weather reports.
Kinect is also an excellent addition for light-hearted gaming, often ideal for younger audiences, families, and party scenarios. And hey, it’s a great way to exercise! The threat of burning actual calories as you read this list of great games you’re missing out on is minimal, however.
Update December 24th, 2016: Removed Xbox Fitness and Project Spark due to the closure of those services. Added Fruit Ninja Kinect 2!
Problem #: It Required A Lot Of Space
Worse, the longer people used Kinect, the more they found places and situations where it just fell short and didn’t work as well as it should have.
In my apartment, playing a Kinect game requires moving furniture around to give the sensor the field of view that it needs to work well. It’s a big problem for lots of gamers, since you need 6 to 10 feet between you and the sensor.
Try playing that in a dorm room or small apartment.

“I’d be surprised if even 20% of rooms with Xboxes ‘work well’ for the really new/fun experiences,” the former Xbox insider says.
Meanwhile, you can sit on a couch in a room of any size and play a more traditional video game.

Troubleshooting The Kinect Adapter
– Make sure the Kinect sensor is turned on in the console settings. Go to Settings > All settings > Kinect.
– Power cycle your console. Sometimes the connection between the sensor and the console needs to be reset.
– To do this, hard boot the console by holding down the power button for 5 seconds until the console shuts down.
– Disconnect the power supply from the console, and wait 1 minute before reconnecting and restarting the console.
– Check the connections of the sensor and adapter to make sure each connector is firmly attached.
– Make sure that the Kinect sensor and adapter are not placed directly on top of the console.
– The adapter must be powered to pass Kinect information to the console. Check the power supply of the adapter and make sure that the LED is lit. If you still have power issues after checking the power supply, reset the Kinect Adapter power supply by unplugging it for 10 seconds and plugging it back in.
Initial Unveiling And Launch
Prior to the official unveiling, a rumor had circulated that the next Xbox console would be an “always on” system requiring a persistent Internet connection, though Microsoft had not confirmed this. This had drawn some concerns from consumers, which were heightened when Microsoft Studios employee Adam Orth stated in a message in April 2013 that said, “Sorry, I don’t get the drama around having an ‘always on’ console…Every device now is ‘always on.’ That’s the world we live in. #dealwithit”. Orth’s message drew further ire towards Microsoft, with concerns about digital rights management and practices against the sale of used games with an “always on” unit. Orth opted to leave Microsoft a few days later due to the backlash. Despite Microsoft’s statements following the situation, denying the rumors, the mood it created lingered over the next several months.
In response to these pre-launch changes and a belief that Microsoft’s initial decisions for the console were in poor judgement, journalists and consumers jokingly gave the Xbox One nicknames such as the “Xbox 180”, in reference to the Xbox 360 and Microsoft’s decision to reverse its controversial decisions, and “Xbone”, suggesting that the company was “throwing a bone” to consumers by making these changes.

Kinect Sports: Season Two
A perfect solution to a Kinect party trying to enjoy the games is to have both Kinect Sports games. Kinect Sports: Season Two offers six more minigames that follow the same formula as the first game. Tennis, Golf, American Football, Baseball, Skiing, and Darts are all available for players to have fun with.
Once again, compared to the Nintendo counterpart, Kinect Sports: Season Two does what Wii Sports: Resort did and simply provided an even better experience that can be a companion piece to the first game.
How Much Does A Kinect Cost
Before we get too into features, lets look at pricing. You can buy the Xbox One in several bundles. You can currently get an Xbox One bundle for about $300 with a game or a few games. Or, you could instead pay $350 for an Xbox One bundle that comes with a Kinect, but it just includes a few simple Kinect games.
The difference is $50, butif you can get a game youd be happy to pay full retail price for bundled with your Xbox Onethe difference might really be more like $100. That makes sense, as you can also purchase the Kinect separately for $100. So you dont necessarily need to make this decision when you buy the console. You can buy a Kinect separately later and connect it to your Xbox One to get the Kinect features.

Microsoft Had No Choice But To Yank Kinect From Xbox One

Xbox One just got dis-Kinected: Microsoft said this morning that on June 9, it will begin selling a $400 version of its Xbox One console that does not include the Kinect camera peripheral.
This would seem to confirm the widely held assumption that the reason that Microsoft’s console cost $500, compared to PlayStation 4 at $400, was the inclusion of Kinect, which can read the movement of players’ bodies, identify them by their faces and accept voice commands. At $100 cheaper, PlayStation 4 is outselling Xbox One significantly: The most recent numbers indicate that Sony has sold 7 million PS4s while Microsoft has shipped 5 million Xbox One consoles to retailers but won’t say how many of those were actually purchased.
Today’s move is another in a series of massive climbdowns for Microsoft. It was also its only conceivable play.
What strong beliefs does Microsoft have left, at this point? It also strongly believed that consumers would want to install their game discs onto Xbox One’s hard drive at the expense of being able to sell or lend those discs later. It believed they’d be okay with their whole console turning into a brick if it wasn’t constantly connected to the Internet. That went out the window as soon as Sony announced it would preserve the status quo and do neither.
Integrating Kinect With Microsoft Azure
Microsoft had abandoned the idea of Kinect for video games, but still explored the potential of Kinect beyond that. Microsoft’s Director of Communications Greg Sullivan stated in 2018 that “I think one of the things that is beginning to be understood is that Kinect was never really just the gaming peripheral…It was always more.” Part of Kinect technology was integrated into Microsoft’s Hololens, first released in 2016.
Microsoft announced that it was working on a new version of a hardware Kinect model for non-game applications that would integrate with their Azure cloud computing services in May 2018. The use of cloud computing to offload some of the computational work from Kinect, as well as more powerful features enable by Azure such as artificial intelligence would improve the accuracy of the depth-sensing and reduce the power demand and would lead to more compact units, Microsoft had envisioned. The Azure Kinect device was released on June 27, 2019 at a price of US$400, while the SDK for the unit had been released in February 2019.
Sky UK announced a new line of Sky Glass television units to launch in 2022 that incorporate the Kinect technology in partnership with Microsoft. Using the Kinect features, the viewer will be able to control the television through motion controls and audio commands, and supports social features such as social viewing.

Kinect For Xbox One And Decline
The Kinect release for the Xbox 360 was estimated to have sold eight million units in the first sixty days of release, earning the hardware the Guinness World Record for the “Fastest-Selling Consumer Electronics Device”. Over 10 million had been sold by March 2011. While seemingly successful, its launch titles were primarily family-oriented games , which may have drawn new audiences, but did not have the selling power of major franchises like Battlefield and which were primarily designed around the Xbox 360 controller. Only an estimated 20% of the 55 million Xbox 360 owners had purchased the Kinect. The Kinect team recognized some of the downsides with more traditional games and Kinect, and continued ongoing development of the unit to be released as a second-generation unit, such as reducing the latency of motion detection and improving speech recognition. Microsoft provided news of these changes to the third-party developers to help them anticipate how the improvements can be integrated into the games.
Microsoft formally announced it would stop manufacture of the Kinect for Xbox One on October 25, 2017. Microsoft eventually discontinued the adapter in January 2018, stating that they were shifting to manufacture other accessories for the Xbox One and personal computers that were more in demand. This is considered by the media to be the point where Microsoft forgone any further work on the Kinect for the Xbox platform.
Best Microsoft Kinect Games Of 2022
The Microsoft Kinect is a motion sensor device developed for the Xbox 360 and later for the Xbox One.
Motion sensor devices are a largely underused asset in home video gaming, in my opinion. There is perhaps a whole discussion to be had about how and why
But if the popularity of the Nintendo Wii and its many successes in motion sensor based games are any indication there is clearly a fanbase ready to swing their way into some unique gaming experiences.
With over 35 million units of the Kinect out in the wild, and over 130 games that support the device gamers have a lot of fun options out there if they are interested in trying their hand.
Nintendo had a firm hold on the motion sensor market, but Xbox is where some of the coolest intellectual properties saw adaptations for gaming.
So which are the absolute best experiences for the Kinect? Lets take a look at the 15 best Microsoft Kinect games of 2022.
This is an easy one. If you have ever played Fruit Ninja on mobile phones or even in arcade you know what to expect:
Its a bunch of fruit thrown your way, and you hack and slash your way through them. Like any good ninja would.
On mobile phones, you swipe your finger across the screen. In arcades you swipe your fingers across much larger screens of flying fruit.
When Halfbrick brought their legendary mobile game to the Xbox Kinect, fans ate it up.
