The Series X enters a scene that looks very different than when its predecessor, the;Xbox One X, arrived three years ago. Though technically it’s competing with other living room game consoles, notably its sibling the Series S and the upcoming SonyPS5, in practice it’s now challenged for a share of your entertainment time and money by hugely popular;phone-based;mobile gaming and the;Nintendo Switch;handheld console, as well as nascent cloud gaming options and;established PC gaming. ;

Breaking Down The Specs

Microsoft has been stoking a slow burn of anticipation over its upcoming Xbox Series X, which is scheduled to launch this holiday season in competition with Sonys PlayStation 5. We know the name, weve seen photos, and we know itll be backwards compatible with Xbox One gamesand now, thanks to a new blog post at Xbox Newswire, we have a deeper glimpse at the hardware inside.

Xbox Series X Performance

Sigh, all that power and no true next-gen games to test it out on. As I write this review, none of the highly polished titles are available for me to test out all those teraflops. Instead, I had to settle for games like Gears 5, Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt and Assassins Creed Odyssey. And dont get me wrong, Im not saying these titles arent graphically taxing, because they are, its just that theyre not the next-gen optimized games I was expecting.;

Thankfully, Gears 5 has been optimized to run at 4K and 60 frames per second or, if youre playing on my LG OLED55E8PUA TV, 120 fps. As I fought my way through a choke point filled with hostile Swarm, the bullets and gore flowed freely and smoothly. And while this isnt my first time playing Witcher at 4K, the game looked better on the Series X. Details such as the armor stitching were sharper.;And I couldn’t help but notice the realistic glint of the hilts of the hero’s swords as the light of the noon sun struck them as he walked through town.;

Thanks to Screen Space Global Illumination , an Unreal engine feature that works to create more realistic indirect lighting on objects as well as dynamic lighting from bright surfaces on neon lighting, my COG armor was reflected accurately as I passed by a shop mirror. SSGI is essentially a less graphic intensive process than ray tracing.;

A Custom Amd Chip Brings 12 Teraflops Of Gpu Power

We already knew that Microsoft was sticking with an AMD chip for its next-gen console, and that it would be based on the Zen 2 architecture with the second iteration of RDNA at the core of its graphics tech. But today we learned a bit more about what that eight-core chip can do. Spencer says the processor will enable developers to leverage 12 TFLOPS of GPU performancetwice that of an Xbox One X and more than eight times the original Xbox One. TFLOPS is short for teraflops, which you can read more about in our explainer, but heres the short version: its a measure that distills the computing power of a chip down to a single number. That single number is a bit of an oversimplification and it doesnt directly translate into gaming benchmark numbers like frame rate and resolution, so comparing teraflops isnt always apples-to-apples but it might help us put some predictions in the ballpark.

What Does a Higher Teraflop Count Mean for Xbox Graphics?

A teraflop is a direct mathematical measurement of a computers performance. It is one of the determining factors that largely helps to evaluate how powerful a graphics card is.

Basically, between two graphics cards, the one with the higher teraflops is usually faster, especially if both are based on the same architecture and have similar specifications in other aspects.

As a result of its high teraflops of 12, the Xbox Series X is the most powerful console on the market. This translates to better graphics and more visually appealing games that run smoother.

Xbox Series X Vs Xbox One X Price

The Xbox Series X costs $499 / £449 / AU$749, and matches the original MSRP of the Xbox One X. While this is, admittedly, very expensive, the Xbox Series X packs a lot of technology into its cuboid frame.;

The problem right now is that the console is notoriously hard to find, with stock continuing to snapped up as soon as it appears, which can make it hard to find where to buy Xbox Series X.;

However, the Xbox One X has had big price cuts over the past few months. Weve seen the console drop well below its original asking price, but as Microsoft has since discontinued the Xbox One X, stock is becoming harder to find. If you do see an enticing deal, then, its worth snapping it up straight away.

System Software And Features

Xbox Series X GPU Is Impressive – Xbox Series X GPU Specs and Features

Both consoles feature a similar user interface to the Xbox One, but there has been a 40% reduction in memory use to improve its speed. According to the UI development team, the Home section loads in about half the time as it did on the Xbox One. Other changes include adding rounded UI elements, a more-readable font for text elements, rearrangement of certain aligned features, and improvements to the sharing functions. These changes were brought to the Xbox One system software, the Windows’ Xbox application, and the Xbox mobile application around September 2020. Based on system previews, about 200;GB of space was reserved on the internal drive of the Xbox Series X for system files.

The console’s Quick Resume feature will allow users to suspend and resume more than one game at a time, and also resume suspended games after a reboot of the console.

Several video and streaming media services will be available through the system software on the consoles’ launch; notably, it will be the first time that Apple TV+ will be available on Xbox consoles.

Microsoft plans to migrate the xCloud service from Xbox One S-based blade servers to Xbox Series X-based systems by 2021.

The Xbox Game Preview program, which allows games to be released through an early access model, continued into the Xbox Series X/S line with Spacebase Startopia as the first such title offered under the program in January 2021.

The new Notifications inbox found under Home combines all of your alerts, invites and messages into one feed. The Activity Feed has also undergone a makeover, with a greater focus on user-generated content, which should allow you to see your friends exploits more easily.;

Ps5 Gpu Vs Xbox Series X Gpu So Who Wins

On paper then, the Xbox Series X is the clear winner, boasting superior compute power resulting in superior teraflop performance as a result. But as I hope youve been able to appreciate by now, Sony has a lot of intelligent design going on within the chassis of the PS5 that help to mitigate some of those disparities. Whether Sony can communicate such technological nuance to the masses at large, is another thing altogether unfortunately.

Xbox Series X GPU Source Code Reportedly Stolen, Ransom ...

We’ve known for a while that the Xbox Series X would be sporting an AMD Zen 2 processor and RDNA 2 graphics, but now we have some actual specific hardware information.

The Xbox Series X will have an 8-core, 16-thread processor with a maximum clock of 3.8 GHz, but it won’t quite operate like a desktop chip.

The Xbox Series X will have an 8-core, 16-thread processor with a maximum clock of 3.8 GHz, but it won’t quite operate like a desktop chip. You see, rather than automatically boosting up core clocks when there’s thermal headroom and the demand for greater performance, the processor will stay at one clock speed at all times depending on how developers use the CPUs.;

What we mean is that developers can either use the processor with or without SMT , and the clock speed will change depending on their choice. The clock speed will be 3.8GHz if hyperthreading isn’t being used, which will boost single-core performance, or 3.6GHz if it’s enabled.;

Since most games right now prioritize a few cores with high clock speeds, this makes the most sense right now, but we could see a move for games to prioritize multi-threaded performance in the future, and this approach would leave the Xbox Series X open to that as time goes on.;

What’s particularly interesting, however is the GPU on offer here. Microsoft decided on a 12TFLOP GPU to target 4K60 gameplay we already knew that but now we know how Microsoft is hitting that target.

So Is The Rtx 3060 Ti Better Than The Xbox Series X Gpu

The Xbox Series X is 5-10% weaker than the Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti. In ray tracing, however, its nearly ~40% weaker. Thats a bummer.

Add to that the fact that the 3060 Ti has DLSS in certain games, which gives it a further 20-30% performance increase without any visible loss in image quality.

So, what GPU is equivalent to the Xbox Series X GPU? A more comparable model to the Xbox Series X GPU would be the RTX 3060.

The RTX 3060 Ti is more of a 1440p video card. Although both can run pretty much anything at , sometimes with a few compromises.

So, is the RTX 3060 Ti better than the Xbox Series X? Well, even thats a half-truth.

The War On Input Lag And Screen Tearing

Microsoft’s speed tenet for Series X also factors in a radical revamp of input processing, designed to shave off latency on every conceivable part of the game’s pipeline – meaning that the time taken between button press to resulting reaction on-screen should reduce significantly. Microsoft has already mentioned Dynamic Latency Input, but only now reveals just how extensive its work is here. It starts with the controller, where the typical 8ms latency on analogue controller input is now reduced significantly by transmitting the most up to date inputs just before the game needs them. Digital inputs like button presses are time-stamped and sent to the game, reducing latency without the need of increasing the polling rate, while USB-connected pads see digital inputs transmitted immediately to the console. To facilitate all of this, the entire input software stack was rewritten, which delivered further latency improvements.

“So, game developers can precisely dial down the latency between the CPU and the GPU until just before bubbles start to form or the GPU might idle because the CPU isn’t feeding it fast enough – and the runtime provides extensive latency feedback statistics for the game to inform the dynamic adjustment. So using this mechanism, the games can very precisely reduce the in-game latency as much as possible – and quite easily as well.”

Cpu And Gpu And The Velocity Architecture In The Xbox Series X

On a 360.45mm² die, the Xbox Series X boasts both an 8-core/16-thread CPU based on AMD’s Zen 2 architecture at 7nm, as well as a GPU baked with AMD’s RDNA2 silicon, with 52 compute units.;

The whole chip has 15.3 billion transistors in total, with slightly less than half of the die going to the GPU. Transistor counts here have more than doubled compared to the Xbox One X . Microsoft has stated that the Xbox Series X and Series S will be the only consoles with full RDNA 2 capabilities. The DRAM is also on the SOC, with 16GB of GDDR6 memory.

The GPU allows for hardware ray tracing support, though we haven’t seen software in time for this review that truly makes use for it. Like traditional PC gaming, it’s still used with a mix of traditional rasterization.

In theory, the system on a chip supports 4K / 120 Hz output, though that will depend on the monitor you use and the game itself.;

Elsewhere on the Xbox Series X’s split motherboard is the SSD storage, a part of what Microsoft calls the Velocity architecture, with 2.4GB/s of I/O throughput. The Xbox also has a custom texture data decompression algorithm. This is what allows for faster load speeds that finally get on the level PC gaming has been on for years, as well as allowing features like Quick Resume to suspend and resume multiple games at once.;
