List Of Xbox Series X Series S Games With 120 Fps

With a new generation of consoles comes new hardware capabilities. One of the exciting new features of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S is the ability to run games at 120 FPS, providing a smoother experience than previous generations that capped out at 60 FPS. We’ve tracked down all the games so far that support 120 FPS, even if it’s only in certain game modes or resolutions. Here’s the complete list of Xbox Series X and S games with 120 FPS support that we know of so far.

With the power of Xbox FPS Boost, even older Xbox games can experience higher framerates, even up to 120 FPS! This means the list of Xbox Series X|S that can push all the way to 120 FPS will grow even faster with favorite games from the last generation of consoles.

New Xbox Series X Photos Finally Show What The Console Looks Like In Real Life

A wild Xbox has been spotted

Glossy press shots of the Xbox Series X are one thing, but getting to see the console in real life is another. You can start to visualize what it’ll look like under your TV for the next three or four years which is of particular interest with this unusually-proportioned console.;

Earlier this week, new photos of the Xbox Series X were snapped out in the wild at the Xperion e-arena in Germany, and are now doing the rounds.;

While the console is firmly locked away behind glass, making it hard to get an idea of its relative size next to the other items in your living room, we do get a pretty clear look at the console from behind, including two rear USB ports.

Here are the photos :

As the back of the console says, it’s seemingly a prototype. What do you think? Out in the real world, it looks slightly less like the obelisk from 2001: A Space Odyssey, and a little more living room-friendly.

We’re looking forward to checking it out, even if we won’t be playing Halo Infinite on it this year. Still, Microsoft Flight Simulator is a surprise game of the year contender for Xbox it should look fantastic on the new system.;

How Much Power Will The Xbox Series X And Series S Pack

How much power? Loads! It’ll have a custom-designed AMD Zen 2 processor with Navi graphics and high-bandwidth GDDR6 memory.

Microsoft has now confirmed that its new console will pack a 12 teraflops GPU, which is twice that of the Xbox One X and more than eight times the original Xbox One

What does all of that mean? Well, all sorts of enhancements: up to 8K resolution, frame rates up to 120fps, and real-time ray tracing. Variable rate shading allows the GPU to prioritise individual effects on specific characters or environmental objectsm rather than refreshing each individual pixel. This helps with both framerate and resolution.;

And thanks to a next-generation 1TB solid state drive, loading times should also be a thing of the past . All told, we can expect games to look amazing and run well although we’re curious to see just how big of an impact that actually has on the experience. Watch above for a very deep dive into the specs and capabilities from Digital Foundry, and look below for the full list of official specs as of March 2020.

Given the price difference, it’s no surprise to hear that the Xbox Series S is also significantly less powerful than the Xbox Series X. While the CPU power isn’t dramatically less, the GPU power is only about one-third of what the Xbox Series X offers, at 4 teraflops compared to 12+ teraflops. It also has half the onboard storage and less RAM .

Lord Over Your Children With Xbox Family App

(Update) Here

Proud parent of a new Xbox Series X owner, but a little nervous about what they might get up to in the big, scary world of online gaming? Check out the Xbox Family app, which gives you easily accessed control over what your children can play on the console, and who they play with.;

The new application performs a number of functions, such as giving users permission to grant friend and party invitations, set time limits for how much time the Xbox Series X can be played for, and much more. If you’re one of those kids, then sorry, but your parents are about to have a much healthier degree of oversight on your gaming time. It’s for the best, really.;

Xbox Series X Load Times

Game
43 seconds1 min, 52 seconds

In fact, Im still impressed with the Series X load times even though Im used to PC SSDs. I covered a bunch of them during our initial preview after a week with the Series X, with games like Sea of Thieves and Destiny 2 loading in less than half the time they do on the Xbox One X. Given how long Steam takes to do its verification process on Destiny 2 over on PC, I can actually load the title quicker on my Xbox Series X than on my gaming PC with a 2TB Samsung Evo Pro 970 NVMe drive inside it.

While the Xbox Series X comes equipped with 1TB of storage, you can only use 802GB of it. Thats actually more than the 780GB of usable space on the Xbox One X, even with Microsoft reserving space for the OS and new Quick Resume feature that lets you swap between games in around 10 seconds or less.

Xbox Series X storage defaults.

Microsoft is also using a proprietary storage expansion slot on the Xbox Series X, and so far, only Seagate has been confirmed as a partner for the $219.99 1TB cards that will slot into the rear of the console. The usable space on these cards is 920GB, as, once again, space is reserved for Quick Resume.

Are Xbox Series X Series S Games Free Upgrades

It depends. Xbox Series X|S Optimized denotes games designed with Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in mind, enabling higher resolutions, improved framerates, and other upgrades previously impossible with the Xbox One family. If an Optimized game releases on Xbox One too, developers can choose to provide free cross-generation upgrades, making a move to the new console a little easier.

The main upgrade route involves Smart Delivery, Microsoft’s standardized initiative for friction-free upgrades between consoles. Supported Xbox Smart Delivery titles automatically grant the best available version for your console, meaning that if you buy Halo Infinite on Xbox One, a better version awaits when you switch to Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. That works for physical discs and digital downloads, with Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and more among early adopters.

However, Smart Delivery isn’t mandatory, and developers aren’t obligated to provide a free upgrade. For example, when a developer puts additional time into developing visual enhancements, they’re allowed to charge for their effects on Xbox Series consoles. For added confusion, publishers like Electronic Arts opted out of Smart Delivery with Madden NFL 21 and FIFA 21, while still providing a free upgrade via a more restrictive limited-time offer.

What’s The Difference Between 60 Fps And 120 Fps

The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S put a notable focus on higher framerates, enabled by upgrades to hardware. The number of frames displayed over a certain period directly relates to gameplay’s fluidity, measured in frames-per-second , with higher framerates enabling smoother experiences. For example, while many Xbox One games run at 30 FPS, some push to 60 FPS in pursuit of fluid gameplay.

While the Xbox One supports 60 FPS and beyond, many games failed to push beyond 30 FPS due to hardware limitations. The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S alleviate several bottlenecks, with Microsoft suggesting 60 FPS will emerge as a more frequent baseline for the next generation. Many Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S titles also pursue 120 FPS, enabling previously impossible experiences, once reserved for PC.

System Software And Features

Both consoles feature a similar user interface to the Xbox One, but there has been a 40% reduction in memory use to improve its speed. According to the UI development team, the Home section loads in about half the time as it did on the Xbox One. Other changes include adding rounded UI elements, a more-readable font for text elements, rearrangement of certain aligned features, and improvements to the sharing functions. These changes were brought to the Xbox One system software, the Windows’ Xbox application, and the Xbox mobile application around September 2020. Based on system previews, about 200;GB of space was reserved on the internal drive of the Xbox Series X for system files.

The console’s Quick Resume feature will allow users to suspend and resume more than one game at a time, and also resume suspended games after a reboot of the console.

Several video and streaming media services will be available through the system software on the consoles’ launch; notably, it will be the first time that Apple TV+ will be available on Xbox consoles.

Microsoft plans to migrate the xCloud service from Xbox One S-based blade servers to Xbox Series X-based systems by 2021.

The Xbox Game Preview program, which allows games to be released through an early access model, continued into the Xbox Series X/S line with Spacebase Startopia as the first such title offered under the program in January 2021.

Xbox Series S Review: Game Library

If you want to know what youll be playing on the Xbox Series S, re-read the backwards compatibility section; for the moment, its pretty much all youre going to get. Microsoft doesnt have any Series S launch titles, per se, instead falling back on its list of 30 optimized games. Some of them, like Assassins Creed Valhalla and Dirt 5 are, indeed, brand new. But every single game on Microsofts list is also available on Xbox One, PC or, in many cases, the PS4.

This is part of Microsofts bigger strategy of building an ecosystem rather than selling hardware, but it still feels disappointing to start off a new console generation without a flagship title that showcases everything you can expect from the system. Its even more disappointing that most of the optimized for Xbox Series X/S games have been out for months , and theres a good chance youve already played a lot of them.

On the other hand, where the Xbox Series S excels is in its Xbox Game Pass connectivity. For those who arent familiar with it, Xbox Game Pass lets you download more than 100 hit games for one flat monthly fee: between $5 and $15, depending on how many bells and whistles you want. The Xbox Series S interface integrates Game Pass in a big way, which is surely obnoxious to people who prefer to buy their games outright, but very convenient to folks who are always on the lookout for something new and exciting to play.

What About Xbox Series S

Codenamed Project Lockhart, the Xbox Series S, is the cheaper, digital-only alternative to the new Xbox Series X.

The lower-cost console had been rumoured for a while along with the disc-less feature, and faster CPU. Think PS4 Pro without the disc dive. Microsoft has said that Xbox Series X will be part of a family of consoles and it seems they were true to their word.

Xbox Series X 4k 8k And Beyond

Xbox Series X Console Unveiled, Arrives in Late 2020

All that power under the hood means the Series X is capable of serious video output. The console is rated to play 8K video in High Dynamic Resolution . Its a bit of future-proofing as there isnt any 8K content at the moment at least not for mainstream consumption. In the meantime, you can enjoy 4K video. And if you cant find any content on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, theres always Blu-ray thanks to the physical drive.;

But thats not why youre buying the Series X. Youre looking to game in glorious 4K and the console doesnt disappoint. The console lets you blast enemies at 4K, 60 frames per second, but has the ability to kick things up to 120 fps thanks to all that power. Pushing the frame rate up to 120 fps means a smoother experience than at 60 fps, better animation detail, less input lag, and ultimately a better gaming experience.;

There are currently 16 games that support 120 fps, including Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Gears 5 and Touryst, an upcoming title. The library is sure to grow after launch.;

Xbox Series X Review: Verdict

The Xbox Series X is the one Xbox to rule them all. Its a single machine thatll run generations of Xbox games, and run them well. Furthermore, itll do so without looking fussy or making a racket.;

Sure, $499 is still a good wad of cash to drop on a gaming machine that hasn’t yet shown any breathtaking next-gen capabilities. But I think its a reasonable price to pay for the tech youre getting. The latest AMD processor and graphics technology promises a lot of power, and the joy of loading games up in mere seconds rather than minutes cant be underestimated. While PCs have had SSDs for a while now, you’d struggle to build a gaming machine with this power and advanced storage for $1,000, let alone half that price.;

I was originally expecting to feel a little disappointed with the Series X, given that theres no one killer app or game to really make it feel like a next-gen powerhouse. But as games now look so good, were not going to get the graphical leap we’ve seen in previous generation consoles. Rather, the Series X is all about making the experience of gaming easier, faster and just better.;

With that in mind, the Xbox Series X is a triumph in the here and now. But I cant wait to see what it will be able to do in a years time

Dts And Dolby Atmos Support

While the default headphones setting for Xbox Series X is Windows Sonic, as on the Xbox One before it, the Xbox Series X also supports Dolby Atmos and DTS headphone: X sound though you need to purchase a separate license for each.;

Windows Sonic is fine for those who arent too fussed about their audio, but Dolby Atmos and DTS provide a fuller spatial sound experience, meaning, for example, that you can tell from an enemys footsteps exactly where they are in relation to you. If youre someone who plays a lot of online multiplayer then it could be worth picking one of these up, especially as you dont need a specific headset for either to work though to use Dolby Atmos you require a compatible soundbar.

Its also worth noting that these only work with games which support Dolby Atmos or DTS sound, which include the likes of Gears 5, Forza Horizon 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

The difference in power generally means early Series S and Series X games run at different resolutions but often perform similarly. For example, Watch Dogs: Legion targets 4K at 30fps on the Series X and 1080p 30fps on the Series S, and both support ray-tracing for better-looking reflections.

Similarly, Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon run at 60fps at 1080p on the Series S, compared to 4K 60fps on the Series X.

What Is Xbox Series X Smart Delivery

Does the Xbox Series X Really Make Xbox One & Xbox 360 Games “Look Better”?

Ahead of the launch of the Xbox Series X, Microsoft has been touting a key feature called Smart Delivery. But what is Xbox Smart Delivery?

This feature is designed to provide a seamless transition for gamers between the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X with regard to cross-generation titles. At its core, the feature will download the optimal version of a game based on the system you are playing on at no additional cost, or effort, to the player.

There are three situations gamers may end up in when buying a cross-generation game:

  • Youre playing it on an Xbox One
  • Youre playing it on an Xbox Series X as its backwards compatible
  • The game is optimised for Xbox Series X and youre playing it on the new console
  • When you purchase a game, Smart Delivery will identify which of these three options is the best fit and deliver only the files you need. If you upgrade to Xbox Series X in the future, or if the developer optimises their game for Xbox Series X via a patch, then Smart Delivery will take care of downloading the required files to maximise the playing experience.

    In short, this means you can comfortably buy a game on Xbox One, knowing that you will get the Xbox Series X version in the future for free, and without unnecessary bloat in the download file. Plus, Microsoft has confirmed that your game progress will transition with you to the next console: no starting again!
