Situation : Xbox 360 With Two Red Leds Illuminated

What the Xbox 360 Red rings mean.

The code of two red LEDs are illuminating means that Xbox 360 is overheating.

Your laptop can be overheating. Your desktop computer can be overheating. Of course, your Xbox 360 can also be overheating.

When your Xbox 360 is overheating, you need to make it have a rest.

You need to shut down the console and then clear away the things around the machine. You need to especially check the cooling vents or the fan of the device to make sure nothing is blocked. About an hour later, you can reboot the console to see whether the issue went away.

General Hardware Failure Errors

Three flashing red lights around the Xbox 360 power button instead of the one to four green lights indicating normal operation represent an internal problem that requires service. This error was soon nicknamed the “Red Ring of Death”, echoing WindowsBlue Screen of Death error. Warning signs may include freeze-ups, graphical problems in the middle of gameplay, such as checkerboard or pinstripe patterns on the screen, and sound errors; mostly consisting of extremely loud noises that can be affected by the volume control, the console only responding when the power button is pressed to turn it off. These events may happen once or several times until the hardware failure occurs, or not at all. If the console freezes occasionally, the error will not necessarily follow. The technical problems seem to affect some generations of consoles more than others, such as the Xenon or Zephyr. Those problems may also cause some freezing screens.

What Is The Red Ring Of Death

The red ring of death, also called RRoD in online slang, stands for the four LEDs surrounding the Xbox 360 power button. When the console operates normally, the upper-left quadrant of the ring is solid green. If the console experiences an error, one to four of the LEDs flash red.

You only see the RRoD on the original Xbox 360 console. Other models, like the Xbox 360 S and Xbox 360 E, only have one visible LED. When these models experience a problem, you see an error code on your television screen.

Kassas February 2007 Investigation

What the Xbox 360 Red rings mean.

The Xbox 360 scratched disc problem received little media coverage in 2006; however, in February 2007, the Dutch television program Kassa investigated several complaints from Dutch consumers about circular scratches made in their Xbox 360 discs. Some of these consumers claimed that their discs became unreadable. Kassa investigation traced the problem to a design defect in which the Xbox 360 optical lens was not restrained sufficiently. In asserting that Microsoft or at least its chain of suppliers was aware of this problem, Kassa noted that Microsoft’s “TSST” versions of the Samsung DVD-drive lack rubber cushions around the optical lens while identical Samsung drives sold for PCs did have these rubber cushions. Kassa also noted that the affected Xbox 360s all seem to have been produced towards the end of 2006.

This ring is used to indicate to the user what state the Xbox is in, and allows the user of the console to find out what state the console is in. Each of the rings quadrants has a number – one for upper left, two for upper right, three for lower left and four for lower right. This stays the same whether the consoled is vertical or horizontal.

Situation : Xbox 360 With Three Red Leds Illuminated

The code of three red LEDs are illuminating means that there is a hardware failure.

You need to make sure whether it is really a hardware issue.

You can check the power source: the LED on the brick next to the power cable that goes into your gaming device.

If the LED is green, there should be something wrong with the console.

If the LED is red or orange, you can unplug the power source and then connect the console to another outlet to check whether the red LEDs are still lighting. If there are still red LEDs with a green light, you will need to repair your Xbox 360 console or replace it with a new one.

Response To Rate Of Failure

In the early months after the console’s launching, Microsoft stated that the Xbox 360’s failure rate was within the consumer electronics industry’s typical 3% to 5%. Nevertheless, Microsoft has not released its official statistics on the failure rate of the various versions of the console.

On July 5, 2007, Peter Moore, the Vice President of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business division published an open letter recognizing the console’s problems, as well as announcing a three-year warranty from the original date of purchase for every Xbox 360 console that experiences the “general hardware failure” indicated by three flashing red LEDs on the console. A source that has been identified as a team leader and key architect in the creation of the Xbox and Xbox 360 and a founding member of the Xbox team provided insight as to the high rate of failures. The interviews suggest that Xbox 360 units that fail early in their life do so because of problems in the system design, parts supply, material reliability, and manufacturing issues as well as a system not tolerant to faults. These issues were alleged to be the end results of the decisions of management in Microsoft’s Xbox team and inadequate testing resources prior to the console’s release. A second source cited that, at one time, there was just a 32% yield of one of the test production runs. 68 of every 100 test units were found to be defective.

Engineering Disaster: The Xbox 360 Red Ring Of Death

Rob Spiegel | Oct 27, 2014

The Red Ring of Death in 2007 was the hardware error signal from the Xbox 360 video game console that announced your machine was toast. There was no coming back from the red disease — your machine had to go back to the mothership for serious revamping or replacing.

The problem happened to more than a few unlucky users. In July of 2007, Xbox producer Microsoft Corp.told analysts in a conference call that it was taking a $1 billion-plus charge against earnings to extend the warrantee on all Xbox 360 consoles because of an “unacceptable number or repairs.”

Under the new warranty, any Xbox 360 console that displayed three flashing red lights — the error signal for a general hardware failure — would be repaired free of charge for up to three years from purchase, shipping included. Customers who had already paid for out-of-warranty repairs would be reimbursed.

Major failure rates

The Xbox was plagued with hardware difficulties from its initial release in November 2005. There were a number of issues such as discs becoming scratched in the drive. After its release, articles started appeared in the game media portraying Xbox 360 failure rates ranging from 23.7% to 54.2%. A German game magazine revealed that representatives of the three largest Xbox 360 resellers claimed that the failure rate of the Xbox 360 was between 30% and 33%.

The Fun Begins: Screws Washers And More Screwyness

So far, we’ve prepped the heatsinks and the motherboard case for these 5MM screws. Now we get to make sumthin’ of it!

With the case sitting flat, fan hole in the back on the right, take note of where you need to stick these screws. The 4 holes on the left X are for your GPU, the 4 holes to the right will be for the CPU screws.

Now put the 5x15MM screws in the GPU screwholes, screwheads on the outside, so that they come into the case. Put tape over the heads to keep them from falling back out, as shown in the second photo. Now put the 5x20MM screws into the CPU screwholes and tape them just like the GPU screws. This tape is very important so don’t take it off until I say so! Ha ha.

Lay the case flat again and all the screws should be poking up at you, as they are in the main photo. Place 3 or 4 5MM washers on each of them, the idea being to get them level with the motherboard standoffs. Use a straightedge to check. If they come up too short or too high the motherboard will get warped and you won’t be fixing anything.

Now the fun begins. You gotta get the motherboard back in the case with the goal of getting the screws into those orange holes that the X-Clamp posts went through. All while you try to keep those washers on the screws! If they fall off at any point, you’ll have to take the motherboard out, put them back on the screw, and repeat. So try not to do it, eh?

This means the cable connecting the Xbox 360 to the television isn’t working properly. Shut down the console and unplug the cable completely from both the television and Xbox. Wait a few minutes, and reconnect the two devices. If the cable still doesn’t work properly, replacements can be found online or at any store that sells video games and video game accessories.

Before you do that, look on the back of the Xbox 360 for an HDMI port. If it has one, and the TV also has an HDMI port, use an HDMI cable, available at any store selling electronics. Not all models have this port, so check first before going to the store.

Xbox 360 Technical Problems

The Xbox 360video game console is subject to a number of technical problems and failures that can render it unusable. However, many of the issues can be identified by a series of glowing red lights flashing on the face of the console; the three flashing red lights being the most infamous. There are also other issues that arise with the console, such as discs becoming scratched in the drive and “bricking” of consoles due to dashboard updates. Since its release on November 22, 2005, many articles have appeared in the media portraying the Xbox 360’s failure rates, with the latest estimate by warranty provider SquareTrade to be 23.7% in 2009, and currently the highest estimate being 54.2% by a Game Informer survey.

There has been legal action taken attempting to hold Microsoft responsible for the Xbox 360’s failure rate and provide compensation for those affected.

Two Blinking Red Lights On Your Xbox

Two red lights blinking on your Xbox signify the console is overheating. Some of us hardcore gamers play so frequently that we sometimes forget to turn off our Xbox 360 consoles. I once left my Xbox on for an entire week! Not good at all. If you are experiencing overheating:

  • All you need to do is unplug all the cords from your console and set it in a well ventilated area to cool down. Don’t put in the freezer or the fridge!
  • Another mistake gamers make is to place their consoles on its side. Doing this will cover up the vents and stop air circulation, therefore speeding up the heating process. So its important to always keep your 360 standing.

New Xbox Slim Substitutes Red Warning Dot For Red Ring Of Death Overheats Anyway

The Red Ring of Death is aptly named. After all, its red, its a ring, and it signals the death of your console. But what name will be devised for the new system? Its a red dot that appears in the center of the power button, but it does not tell of a death already suffered. It is a warning of one to come. One that, supposedly, the machine will then take measures to prevent.

When the red dot flashes, the console is just beginning to heat up a bit more than seems safe. Apparently being allegedly quiet as a whisper doesnt mean they found a better, quieter fan. Anyway, the console will then present the below message informing you that youd best turn off your console or else it will die forever. And by informing, I may mean mandating, because there doesnt appear to be any alternative action.

Well it sucks that were already seeing the overheating problem from XBoxs brand new baby, but at least we wont see as many dying consoles, right? Just shorter play times so people can go outside and get healthy, right?

According to a MaxConsole report, one self confessed Xbox fanboy has encountered and filmed the problem of his new XBox overheating, and he didnt get a warning. Instead, he got irritating lines up and down the screen. Here is the text of his warning to the masses!
