  • Xbox One S Vs Xbox One: Performance

And while a lack of a power brick and 40% smaller form factor are cool, you probably want know what’s going on inside the box that make the One S the best system Microsoft has ever made.

Games with unlocked frame rates performed 7-11% better on the Xbox One S than on the original system

Inside a smaller, more efficient CPU and a slightly faster GPU give the Xbox One S a slight edge, performance-wise, over the original Xbox One. While Microsoft seems hesitant to acknowledge the difference in power itself, reputable tech breakdown site Digital Foundry found that some games with unlocked frame rates performed 7-11% better on the Xbox One S than on the original system. To some, the difference between 40 and 46 frames per second is a noticeable one. Others might not care as much.

What everyone can appreciate, however, is that the Xbox One S is the first console to support 4K playback. It has a 4K Blu-ray player built-in for high-density media playback, supports Netflix in Ultra HD and upscales games to 3,840 x 2,160.

Starting this fall the Xbox One S will also play some games in High Dynamic Range , essentially offering better contrast, color and brightness in some of your favorite games. At its keynote during E3 2016, Microsoft said that both Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3 will play in the expanded color gamut technology with more first-party titles to follow next year.

Our guide to HDMI support on the next-gen Xbox

You can now buy the next-genXbox Series X wherever you are in the world, which will give you a big boost to the capabilities youd expect from previous home consoles.

Whether you’ve already been lucky enough to get an Xbox Series X already, or youre stuck waiting for retailers to replenish their supplies, its worth considering that the new Xbox Series Xs HDMI capabilities and its TV capabilities are different to its current-gen counterparts.

The Xbox Series X and Series S come with anHDMI 2.1 connection standard, which allows the consoles to support a max 120fps in games running at 4K resolution. When it comes to console gaming, this is a huge leap forward. Thats because theXbox One X could only hit 4K/60fps, meaning the ceiling is far higher for this console generation.

Not only does HDMI 2.1 allow for much better frame rates, but it also means you can transfer 4K and even 8K image qualities from your games console to a compatible TV. However, one caveat to this is that 8K gameplay will be limited to 60fps but you likely won’t be playing any 8K games for a while.

There’s a lot to learn when it comes to HDMI connections and the Xbox Series X, so thats why weve created this guide. It’s worth noting, though, that while the Xbox Series X comes with an HDMI 2.1 supporting cable, the Xbox Series S only comes with an HDMI 2.0 cable which we’ll look at in more detail below.

This is exciting for all the obvious reasons, but its also a way for those with Xbox One consoles to play some games that were made or optimized for newer consoles too. For example, Xbox Series X|S-specific titles like Recompile, The Medium, and The Riftbreaker are now playable on Xbox One with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. And more games, including Microsoft Flight Simulator, are on the way in early 2022.

Xbox One Vs Xbox One S: Design

Unboxing the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition Bundle (1TB)

The most noticeable difference between the Xbox One and Xbox One S is the body. First, Microsoft had ditched the black for a beautiful white shell. But more impressive than the new color scheme is that the Xbox One S is a whopping 40% smaller than the Xbox One. But it gets better. Microsoft has managed to fit the original Xbox Ones external power brick inside the Xbox One S now, so all you have is a thin cord running from the S to your outletno bulky power brick to trip over anymore.

Another great design difference between the two units is the Xbox One S can also stand vertically now. This allows it to take up a smaller surface area next to your TV. The S also gets rid of the prior versions slits in favor of dozens of holes that allow for cooling the insides.

Xbox One Vs Xbox One S: Features

    • Save

The Xbox One S has several additional features the original Xbox One doesnt have. For starters, it supports 4K ULTRA HD and 4K BLU-RAY video playback. This means youll be able to play 4K Blu-rays and stream 4K content from Netflix and Amazon on the Xbox One S. There are a few caveats with this 4K support. The S does not support 4K games and, of course, youll need a 4K tv to see the video boost. While the original Xbox One offered a Blu-ray player, it did not support 4K discs.

One of the major differences between the Xbox One and Xbox One S is 4K content and, more importantly, the 4K upscaling of games, as well as HDR-support for compatible TVs. These attributes alone make the Xbox One S a very compelling upgrade, especially if youve recently investing in a 4K TV.

Now, upscaling, traditionally, has always been frowned upon in the gaming world but Microsoft has a super clever solution for upscaling games to 4K and the results are, well pretty damn stunning, as noted by Forbes.

The remarkable quality of the Xbox One Ss 4K game upscaling stands out extremely clearly even against the excellent upscaling built into a very high-end 4K TV like Samsungs UN65JS9500. If youve got a relatively cheap 4K TV the picture quality difference delivered by the Xbox One Ss superior upscaling will be even more pronounced.

Xbox One S Review: What’s In The Box

The Xbox One S comes in white as standard, helping it stand out from the classic black look of the OG and the X.

As you would expect for a system that is whiter than Santa’s beard, the Xbox One S comes in a slick, minamilist, white box. Open said box and you are presented with a series of smaller white boxes, as well as the system itself, which is covered in – yep, you guessed it – a white sleeve.

The Xbox One S box comes with all the usual extras and leads, including a white Xbox One X controller. It looks very, very nice.

Alongside the console you also get a brand new and streamlined white controller, black console stand, high-speed HDMI cable, power plug, pair of AA batteries , quick-start guide, warranty and a 14-day Xbox Live Gold trial membership code.

You Should Not Buy The Xbox One S If

You want something more powerful: The Xbox One S is a weak console in comparison to its current siblings, failing to reach a 1080p resolution and consistent level of performance with most modern titles. If this sounds like a genuine drawback for you, Id consider the Xbox One X or perhaps one of the next-gen consoles once stock returns to normal.

Youre hoping for new exclusives: Aside from Halo Infinite, which is due later this year, Microsoft will likely abandon the Xbox One S in the coming years when it comes to new exclusives. The console simply isnt powerful enough to accomodate modern games at their best, and doing so will only hold creators back from their true potential.
