Xbox Series X Backwards Compatibility

Is the Xbox Series X Worth It? (Console Review)

Backwards compatibility is always a contentious issue with console gaming, but Microsoft has always been excellent at extending the life of older libraries. Case in point: the Xbox Series X is fully backward compatible with all Xbox One games. This includes any games that work on the console, including Xbox 360 and original Xbox games that are part of the current backward compatibility program. Thats four generations of backward compatibility, for those keeping score.

Older games also look even better than before, thanks to the previously mentioned visual enhancements. Things that were impossible at the time, like higher framerates and HDR, are added after the fact by the new Xboxs powerful processor and machine learning tech. Plus, of course, hugely improved load times due to the new SSD.

As mentioned above, Microsoft also announced a Smart Delivery program that automatically upgrades certain cross-gen titles as soon as you upgrade your console. This is even better than backwards compatibility because supported games will effectively be native Series X games, even if you bought the boxed Xbox One version.

Is Xbox Series X Worth Buying Over Ps5

The Xbox Series X is worth buying over the PS5 if youre looking for a routinely expanding library of first- and third-party games at a comparatively low price, over the single-player blockbusters that PlayStation is proven to provide. While theres no saying that Xbox wont eventually invest heavily into the kinds of experiences Sony provides with the likes of The Last of Us, God of War, and Uncharted, currently Xbox is more focused on preventing plenty of bang for your buck with Game Pass and its routinely updated library.

Xbox Series Xs key selling point completely revolves around Game Pass and the value it provides. At this point in time, the PS5 has arguably had the highest number of system sellers, from Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart, to Demons Souls, to Returnal. However, theres certainly plenty of stellar games to play Xbox Series X, and this list is only set to grow thanks to Microsofts bank-busting acquisition of Bethesda.

Xbox One Vs Xbox Series X: Games

With the launch of the Xbox Series X comes some exciting new game titles which you can play right now:

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Watch Dogs Legion
  • Dirt 5

If the cost of the Xbox Series X plus a whole host of games seems too much to digest, you might want to consider the incredible value of the Xbox Game Pass.

You’ll have access to a huge library of Xbox Game Pass games ready to play on your Xbox Series X. These titles will benefit from improved graphics, higher resolution gameplay, and faster loading times.

For players who already own Xbox One, Xbox 360, and even original Xbox games, you’ll be pleased to know the Xbox Series X is backward-compatible.

Better Graphics On Old Games Great Graphics On New Games

The Xbox Series X and Series S are more graphically powerful than previous consoles in a variety of ways. In most titles, you can expect higher resolutions, higher frame rates, and more detailed characters and environments compared to the same games on Xbox One or PlayStation 4, all with better image quality. Effects should also be more pronounced and sophisticated, as graphics hardware in these consoles can pull off greater amounts of fancy tricks like smoke and fog that have physical properties and lighting that creates shadows and reflections more like youd find in the real world.

Performance: Plenty Of Power In A Big Box

Xbox Series X Review

Microsoft has shouted about its superior hardware at nearly deafening levels since it first teased the Series X . By now, you likely know the specs and buzzwords: 120 frames per second , HDR, 12 teraflops of processing power, and so on.

Despite its performance, the Series X is surprisingly quiet. The cooling structure of the system is so efficient that youll sometimes wonder if the console is actually turned on. The Xbox One, in comparison, is like a jet engine.

The Series X is not, however, an easy fit in most home entertainment centers. Microsoft built its next-generation system to be a showcase item. The Series X is smaller than the PlayStation 5, but its still not built to fit easily into the average living room A/V cabinet. This is due to its width, the consequence of a shape more similar to a box than a slate. It could be an annoyance to some owners.

Is Gta 5 Enhanced Edition Really The Best Version

As fantastic as GTA 5 Enhanced Edition is, you still cant mod the game like you can on PC. If you have the know-how and capable hardware, GTA 5 can be modded to look nearly photorealistic. However, GTA 5 on PS5 and Xbox Series X is the most approachable version of the game, and I think its enough of a step up over the vanilla PC version to justify its fourth release. Although please dont re-release it again, Rockstar. Four times is more than enough. Just keep working on GTA 6, please.

Despite being adamant that nothing could tempt me back into the seedy world of Los Santos, particularly as Id already picked up Rockstars open-world epic on PS3, Xbox One, and PC, I have nothing but good things to say about this remaster from the short time Ive played.

Ive never denied that GTA 5 is a fantastic game, but I cant comprehend how its still so good after all this time. It wouldnt have sold a bajillion copies if it wasnt, of course, so don’t be shocked if it tops the best-seller list on PS5 and Xbox Series X for many months to come.

GTA 5 also has a huge online community, an area of the game which I never truly explored. That might be enough reason for some players to return to GTA 5, but Im honestly just glad the game didnt turn out like the disastrous release of the GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition. The less said about that, the better.

Is A Refurbished Xbox Series X Console Worth It

While Xbox Series X availability has improved over time, it’s still harder than it probably should be to buy Microsoft’s primary console in 2022. The arrival of refurbished consoles presents a different avenue when shopping for the next generation, both more accessible and cheaper than new. When left weighing up your options, it’s crucial to consider stock in your region, pricing, and deals.

Buying a refurbished Xbox Series X isn’t all about saving cash. With discounts between 6-7% depending on your location, the savings are relatively mediocre compared to the total price of the hardware. However, in regions where it’s still hard to buy an Xbox Series X, it’s cheaper and easier to go refurbished, making the offering much more compelling.

Opting for refurbishment through the Microsoft Store also benefits buyers with a generous warranty 12 months standard on all devices. The coverage provides some added peace of mind around Microsoft’s already rigorous refurbishment processes, making it an overall safe alternative to a new console.

We also recommend looking out for promotions, with an ongoing U.K. deal offering an extra £25 of value with refurbished units. Factoring in the included gift card cuts the relative cost of the console below £400, sweetening the deal in a region where Xbox Series X stock remains more widely available at many online retailers.

Is Xbox Series X Worth Buying Over Series S

The Xbox Series X is worth buying over the Series S if you want 4K gaming. While there are other perks to the former, such as its 4K UHD Blu-Ray drive for physical media, the main selling point is its ability to output at a native 4K resolution, compared to the Series Ss max of 1440p. 4K TV adoption is increasing, meaning that even if you arent currently rocking a 4K-ready setup, theres a likelihood that you eventually will be as such, Microsofts top-end console is ideal for future-proofing.

However, if you arent concerned with any of that and you just want to enjoy the Xboxs library of games and, crucially, Game Pass at a low price point, then the Series S is undoubtedly your best option. The only true differentiator here is how comfortable you will be in owning a console that will continue to be increasingly outperformed by its counterpart as this generation continues on.

The Xbox Series X Smart Delivery Advantage

But what happens when developers release a game for the Xbox One X? Well, the Smart Delivery feature means you can enjoy games like Cyberpunk 2077 on the Xbox One X, as well as a free upgrade to the Xbox Series X.

This also means you can continue to enjoy games like Halo Infinite on the Game Pass on your Xbox One X if the Xbox Series X’s price point is not within your budget. If you do eventually upgrade to the Xbox Series X, you won’t have to repurchase the game, and your saved data will carry across too.

Xbox Series X Vs Xbox Series S: Design

While the Xbox Series X is a pretty console, there’s no denying that it’s pretty big: 11.9 x 5.9 x 5.9 inches, and 9.8 pounds. It’s not at all guaranteed to fit in your entertainment center, particularly if you want it in a horizontal configuration.

This is where the Xbox Series S positively shines. The little white console is only 10.8 x 5.9 x 2.6 inches, and 4.3 pounds. It’s one of the smallest, lightest consoles in years, and it fits perfectly in an entertainment center or simply next to a TV on a dresser. The Xbox Series S is easy to fit into any setup, and easy to move around.

For this reason, the Xbox Series S makes a fantastic secondary console for a bedroom, child’s room, guest room you get the idea. This is particularly true since most Xbox Series X/S games are also available on PC, and your save data can carry over especially true if you use Xbox Game Pass Ultimate . On the other hand, we also realize it’s a luxury to own a single console for the living room an extra one might be pushing it.

The Lower Specs Aren’t Actually A Problem

While the specifications of the Series X and S are different, especially in terms of the GPU and the SSD, this is no reason to discount the smaller console. If you have a Series S, then you can make use of the Smart Delivery feature. This ensures the smaller, max 1440p content arrives on your Series S automatically, which is naturally smaller in file size than a 4K game.

So, while your game might not have all the glory of 4K features, it will download faster and take up less space on your console SSD. Plus, you can always increase your storage space with one of Seagate’s official Xbox Series X/S storage expansion cards.

Xbox Series X Vs Xbox Series S: What’s The Same

Xbox Series X Review: Is it worth upgrading this holiday season

In many ways the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are very similar. Sure their overall power and design is different, but both use the same controller, interface, and other features.

Most pertinent, the game library is the same for both. Sure you’ll get better graphics and faster frame rates in the latest games with the Series X, but the Series S isn’t likely to let you down either. There are a lot of older Xbox games now optimized for both of the new consoles, and also run well on each.

And thanks to the use of a fast SSD, both consoles can access the Quick Resume feature, which lets you suspend multiple games and jump back into them within seconds just bear in mind the Series S won’t hold as many games as its larger sibling.

An Xbox Series S Takes Up Less Space

If real estate is a primary concern for you in terms of your living space and entertainment setup, then the Series S is an excellent option.

We mentioned earlier that the console is much smaller and lighter than the Series X, and so it goes without saying that it will take up less room, no matter where you set it up. So, if you play Xbox while sat at your gaming desk, then the Series S will nestle nicely on the corner, or underneath your monitor stand, if you have one!

Likewise, it won’t take up too much space around the TV, if that is where you hit Halo Infinite the most.

See Whats Leaving Xbox Game Pass

Like any subscription service, Xbox Game Pass frequently gets new games and drops older ones. Thats bad news if youre in the middle of a game thats on the chopping block. However, Microsoft usually gives users about a month before removing Game Pass titles, which should hopefully be enough time to finish . Under the Xbox Game Pass menu, theres a section called Leaving soon, which is exactly what it sounds like. Its worth perusing this section once a month or so, if only to see which games to try before its too late.

Faster Performance Higher Frame Rates

The Xbox Series X and Series S have powerful CPUsin the neighborhood of four times as powerful as their predecessor in raw speed and the number of cores and threads, to say nothing of seven years worth of efficiency and other improvements. This means faster user interfaces and much faster load times,1 as well as more sophisticated character and game behaviors, and just more stuff on screen at any given moment.

The biggest improvements are most apparent in frame rates, which should hit 60 frames per second much more often this generation than last. The more frames per second, the more often the controller and the game are communicating. So a new Series X or Series S should feel like it responds faster and more reliably to your inputs. And when games cant maintain consistent frame rates, support for variable refresh rates should help keep those games from feeling unresponsive. Recent examples here include Battlefield 2042, Elden Ring, and Psychonauts 2, all of which offer 60 FPS modes on Series X and S unavailable on the Xbox One.

These improvements have come to a number of existing titles originally released for the Xbox One Gears 5, the entirety of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and Ori and the Will of the Wisps have all received 120 FPS updates for the Xbox Series X and Series S.

Is World Of Warships Cross

Xbox Series X Review – Worth it?

Yes, World of Warships is a partially cross-platform compatible game. This states that the game is playable between at least two different platforms. The platforms that the game is cross-platform with are the Playstation series and Xbox series.

This means that if you have an account on either the Playstation 4/PS5 or Xbox One, you can play with players on the other platform. But, unfortunately, you cannot play with players on PC or Mac. The game is not cross-platform with these platforms.

The developers have not announced any plans to make the game cross-platform with these platforms in the future. So, for now, you can only play with players on the Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

There are many benefits of World of Warships being cross-platform, including:

  • You can play with your friends on different platforms.
  • You can use your account, progression, and in-game purchases across platforms.
  • You can queue up for games together and keep your progress regardless of what platform you’re playing on.
  • You can find more opponents to play against.

Xbox Series X Controller

Another notable change for the Series X is the new controller design seen above. Xbox Series X controllers are a touch more ergonomic than their predecessors, but they are familiar for the most part.

The controllers button layout is virtually identical to previous controllers, and it features a textured surface on the triggers and bumpers. The rubberized surface is also found on the controllers back for enhanced grip and comfort even in extended play sessions.

The biggest change is that the D-pad has been replaced with the improved design from the premium Xbox Elite Wireless controller Series 2. This should make inputs while playing fighting games in particular much more precise.

Following in Sonys footsteps, Microsoft also introduced a screenshot sharing button. This will allow you to capture and share gameplay without resorting to clumsy cables and adaptors.

Like the previous iteration, the Xbox Core Controller is fully compatible with Windows PCs right out of the box. Theyre also compatible with Android and iOS devices via Bluetooth. We fully expect them to dethrone the Xbox One Wireless controller as one of the best mobile controllers out there as availability improves.

Yes. Older Xbox controllers work on the Series X, and the new Xbox Core controllers work on older consoles, too.
