Both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X cost $500 apiece. Since the two systems are very similar, this category would seem to be a tie at first glance. However, the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X are not the only variants available. Theres also the $400 PS5 Digital Edition and the $300 Xbox Series S.
The PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition are identical, save for a 4K Blu-ray physical disc drive in the former. The latter has no disc drive, as the name suggests. On the other hand, the Xbox Series S has significantly different hardware from the Xbox Series X: a less-powerful GPU, a smaller SSD, less RAM and so forth.

Speaking with Xbox leadership, GameSpot also detailed an “ever-so-slightly smaller” controller silhouette for Xbox Series X, in response to user research. While a subtle change, Microsoft hoped to nail down ergonomics across the broadest range of Xbox buyers. For a start there is one area where the Xbox Series X doesnt have an advantage over PS5 and thats in GPU clock speed. To hear Lead System Architect Mark Cerny describe it, its ultimately preferable to have a GPU that is much more nimble than broadly powerful at a basic level.
Speaking to Digital Foundry, Cerny believes that while a teraflop figure might be common across two platforms, the one with the faster clock speed, despite having fewer compute units, would see better results that the teraflop figure would not necessarily represent.
Performance is noticeably different, because teraflops is defined as the computational capability of the vector ALU. Thats just one part of the GPU, there are a lot of other units and those other units all run faster when the GPU frequency is higher. At 33 per cent higher frequency, rasterisation goes 33 per cent faster, processing the command buffer goes that much faster, the L1 and L2 caches have that much higher bandwidth, and so on, Cerny explains in his presentation to Digital Foundry.
And this is the thing while teraflops are an important metric its also important to remember that they are just one aspect of system performance and indeed, just one aspect of GPU performance too.

Both consoles come with natty new controllers, but there’s no denying that the PS5’s new DualSense is the more significant and, ultimately, better of the two.
While most are unlikely to see or even feel the difference, the new Xbox controller is a little smaller than its predecessor, which should make it easier for younger and smaller gamers.
The underside is more prominently textured, too, and that mottled effect has also found its way to the surfaces of the two trigger buttons these are matte rather than glossy, and curve to a less prominent peak. Overall, the new controller is a little easier to grip and more ergonomically advanced, which can only be good.
On the face of the controller is a new Share button, inspired by that of the PS4s DualShock 4. Tap the button to instantly save a screenshot, hold it down for a couple of seconds to capture the last 29 seconds of gameplay. The d-pad, meanwhile, has been tweaked to resemble that of the Elite Controller Series 2. This makes it more useful for games that require sweeping actions , without overly sacrificing the positivity of presses up, down, left or right.
The Series X controller is better than the already excellent controller before it, but not drastically so. We wouldnt recommend rushing out to replace your controllers, and you dont need to either: Xbox One controllers work just fine with the Series X.

More Space For More Games
Both consoles have also attempted to address internal storage issues. With 1TB of space in the Xbox Series X and about 800GB in the PS5, gamers could very quickly hit those limits, with many games taking around 50GB of your console’s space and some coming in at 80GB or higher. Each console tackled this problem in a different way, and neither solution is perfect.
The Xbox Series X and Series S allow non-Series X games to be played from a standard external solid-state drive hooked up via USB-A. Modern Series X games could be stored on the external drive, but you’d have to transfer them back to the internal drive for play.
Why make something universal when you can make it proprietary? Microsoft also created a custom plug-in storage drive that fits into a special port on the back of the system. Technically it’s an external drive, but it behaves like an internal one, and you can both store and play any Series X game on it. So far Seagate is the only company making these drives, and the first version was a $219 1TB drive. If that feels expensive, that’s what happens when you have a proprietary device with no competition.
The situation hasn’t changed much in the past year, but Seagate now makes 512GB and 2TB drives, so you at least have a few options. Even though I think it’s too proprietary and too expensive, I have the 1TB Seagate drive, and it works great.
Adding an M.2 drive to the PS5 is easy, if you can find one.
Ps5 Vs Xbox Series X Controller And Features What Are The Big Selling Points
The Xbox Series X has Quick Resume, a feature that allows you to swap between the active states of six different games at once. Kept running by the internal SSD, its a feature that has had a huge impact. Instead of having to wait for a title to load, and then sitting through an array of menu options, youre thrown straight into the action.
Im blown away by how well it works, even maintaining my suspended states after the console has been unplugged for an extended period of time. Combine this with fantastic loading times and the whole experience feels wonderful, and a noticeable step ahead of the competition when it comes to backward compatibility. The PS5 is lacking such a feature right now, and I didnt expect its absence to be so notable.
In terms of the controller, Microsoft has taken a more conservative effort with the Series X. The design remains virtually unchanged from the previous generation, with small additions coming in the form of a share button and a more textured grip for added comfort. It feels nicer to use, but its certainly a case of if it aint broke, dont fix it from Xbox and, in all honesty, who can blame them? All your previous controllers and accessories will work, too!

In terms of other new features, the PS5 is relatively thin on the ground, adopting a moment-to-moment experience that feels very familiar. This is no bad thing, but those hoping for a massive departure might be underwhelmed.
