Is Xbox Game Pass worth it in 2022?

Games on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate constantly shift, with five or more new games added every month. These games include brand new titles and titles from the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox eras.

A few games also leave the service every month. Thankfully, Microsoft provides plenty of notice beforehand. Typically you can grab outgoing titles at a hefty discount to keep the fun rolling.

To give you some idea of what Game Pass Ultimate has to offer, heres a small selection of some of the best games to play:

Best Games on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate:

  • ARK: Ultimate Survivor edition
  • United States

The future: Play pre-owned games via the cloud and free game demos

Microsoft announced in June 2022 that sometime later in the year, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members will be able to play a certain number of games via cloud servers that they already own or have purchased that are outside of the Xbox Game Pass library of titles. Also, within the next year, Microsoft will launch Project Moorcroft. It will offer free demos of upcoming games to all Xbox Game Pass subscribers.

Why Has Xbox Game Pass Been So Successful In 2021

It could be argued that the stock issues surrounding the Xbox Series X and PS5 drove many gamers into the arms of the Xbox Game Pass service in 2021. Lets not forget, the Series S console was readily available throughout the year, and at a much cheaper price too. This little powerhouse feels built for the service. Its lack of disk drive means that players are naturally going to look for other means of experiencing their favorite games.

Gamers who originally opted for Sonys PS5 this gen may have been tempted to double-dip in 2021, seeing the Xbox Series S as a complementary companion device to their PS5. A Game Pass subscription with day-one access to all Xbox IPs may just have been the icing on the cake. Xbox Game Pass is also available on all versions of the Xbox One too, not to mention PC and mobile.

It also helps that this year has been all about the games. From first-party juggernauts like Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5, to day one launches of titles like Outriders and MLB The Show, theres been something for everyone on Game Pass in 2021.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: Is It Worth It

The short answer is: yes, most definitely Game Pass Ultimate is worth it, particularly if you’re only paying £1 for your first three months.

There’s a basketful of value from the service and it’s quick and simple to sign up.

Looking just at the free games you get to play, there are well over 100 titles you can download and play whenever you want, ranging from small independent games to triple-A top-end titles. Even if you download just three of those games, you’re easily earning your money back per month.

And the selection of games you can download are top-notch. Sail the open seas in the incredibly fun Sea of Thieves, or explore space with Master Chief in any of the Halo games.

And if you can’t find any games you like in that list you can explore EA Play for a number of great sporting games. And after that, you can check out the Xbox games store and enjoy anywhere from 15%-75% on the latest games.

We also really enjoy the heavy discount on the multiplayer part of Live Gold as playing online with friends is arguably the best part of gaming.

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion

This is quite possibly the most uniquely fun game out right now. This 2D adventure has you playing as a turnip who has been evicted from their home due to unpaid taxes. With no hope left, you go on a crime spree destroying everything in your path, including government documents, essentially paying the world back in the most unconventional way. Along the way, you hunt for treasure, solve some puzzles and bring down a corrupt government.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Xbox Game Pass Pros & Cons: Is it Worth it for you?

The list of the best Star Wars games is remarkably small, despite the fact that games bearing the name have been released for decades. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order stands apart, though. Its the first Star Wars game in a long time thats concerned with being a good game, not just a licensed one. The result is a game thats thoroughly enjoyable for those who couldnt care less about Star Wars, but with enough fan service to keep franchise fans hooked.

When it comes to gameplay, Fallen Order is like Dark Souls light. It has tight swordplay, with tuned parrying and dodging mechanics. However, its clear Fallen Orders difficulty was tuned against the mainstream video game market, not against solely Dark Souls. Because of that, Fallen Order is an enjoyable romp for Souls-like fans while being accessible to genre newcomers.

Xbox Game Pass 202: So What Is It Exactly

For the uninitiated, Xbox Game Pass is a Netflix-like, all-you-can-eat video game subscription service from Microsoft. The service is available on Xbox One consoles, Xbox Series X and S consoles, PC, and Android devices as of writing, and has since expanded to the web, granting access to iOS devices, Chromebooks, and many more.

Xbox Game Pass comes in three flavors: “Xbox Game Pass” gives you access to a large library of games on your Xbox console. “Xbox Game Pass for PC” gives you access to a large library of games on your Windows PC. And finally, “Xbox Game Pass Ultimate” gives you access to all the games on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and a selection of games to stream from the cloud to PC, Android, and modern web-friendly devices. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate also includes Xbox Live Gold, which is needed for multiplayer gaming on Xbox consoles.

Game Pass Ultimate is quite obviously the best value if you plan to use every service.

Xbox Game Pass for console and Game Pass for PC are $9.99 respectively, with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate being $14.99. Game Pass Ultimate is quite obviously the best value if you plan to use every service across multiple devices, rather than buying up Xbox Live Gold, Game Pass, and PC Game Pass separately. Microsoft also has an introductory offer to convert Xbox Live Gold long-term subscriptions directly into Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for those who haven’t converted yet.

Now that you’re up to speed, let’s dive into what makes Xbox Game Pass really great .

Xbox Game Pass 202: What’s Not So Great

Xbox Game Pass has a range of idiosyncrasies that hinder the platform in some ways. They range from mild irritations to bigger problems, but I would preface by saying none of it feels really like a deal-breaker. Moreover, this is just a range of things I think Microsoft could add to improve the platform.

The first pain point I often see across social media from those with kids is the lack of family access. If you’re using a single shared Xbox, every profile on that home Xbox gains access to Xbox Game Pass. However, if you have multiple Xbox consoles and have a bigger family, you’ll need multiple Xbox Game Pass subscriptions to keep everybody online simultaneously. This is a drawback of Xbox Game Pass that seems to have been overlooked at the time of the service’s creation.

Netflix and Disney+ both support multiple logins across multiple devices with simultaneous streams at different price tiers. I think it would be within Microsoft’s interest to at least consider offering a higher-paid tier for multi-user licensing for families.

Another source of irritation for me at least comes from Xbox Cloud Gaming, or Project xCloud, across Android . Microsoft is among the first and most prolific companies to offer a cloud gaming option in their service at this scale. Sony has PlayStation Now but doesn’t consistently offer its own games into the service. Amazon Luna is just starting up, and Google Stadia is arguably winding down.

You Already Subscribe To Xbox Live Gold

Is Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Worth It? (feat. @Trisha Hershberger)

An Xbox Live Gold subscription on its own will run you roughly $10 per month or $60 per year. If you also want Xbox Game Pass, then, theres really no downside to going with the Ultimate tier. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate includes Xbox Live Gold as part of the package. So you are getting all the goodies of Ultimate access on both console and PC, cloud gaming, EA Play, etc. while also getting an Xbox Live Gold subscription. Thats a tough deal to beat.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

The Xbox brand might never have taken off without the Halo series, the first-person shooters that helped to popularize local competitive multiplayer on consoles before taking the party online after the launch of Xbox Live. The Master Chief Collection package includes multiple Halo games, all of which have been updated to keep them enjoyable for modern audiences.

But whats so striking about the collection is how many ways there are to play. You can go through the campaigns by yourself. If you want to play with a friend but dont want to compete, there is co-op, allowing you to share the games stories with a partner, either online or through split-screen play. If you do want to compete, you can do it locally against up to three other players on the same TV, or take things online to challenge the wider community.

These are some of the best first-person shooters ever released, and theyre worth revisiting and enjoying, no matter how you decide to play them. Sharing these games with my children through local co-op has been an amazing journey, and this package includes so many games, each of which is filled with different modes and options. Its hard to imagine ever getting bored or uninstalling the collection once its on your hard drive.

This is a part of gaming history that continues to feel relevant, and very much alive. Ben Kuchera

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is available via Game Pass on Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

The Game Pass Catalog

It shouldnât be surprising that the main reason to subscribe to Game Pass is to play their games. Theyâre often rotating the games they offer, but it seems that they always have some titles that are worthwhile. Spend your hours fighting against criminals in Gotham as Batman, explore islands and the sea in Sea of Thieves, and take down the Locust in the Gears of War series.

And new games are added all the time including new games on the first day of their release. A recent example of this is Outsiders and MLB The Show 21. Halo: Infinite has been promised to be available on Game Pass as soon as itâs released. Games such as Hello Neighbor 2, Narita Boy, and Dead Static Drive have also been confirmed to arrive at Game Pass at their launch.

Xbox Game Pass 202: What’s Great

This first reason will come as no surprise: games. Games, games, games, and more games. Xbox Game Pass, unsurprisingly, is full of video games, of all shapes and sizes, all types and genres, budgets big and small for all sorts of people.

Microsoft adds all of its games day and date to Xbox Game Pass, including their biggest upcoming titles like Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5. This shows a great deal of commitment and consistency towards the platform, in a similar way to how Netflix and Disney+ build up their service with exclusive “original” content.

There’s literally something for everyone on offer here.

A lot of the games Microsoft builds for Xbox Game Pass also enjoy ongoing updates. Titles like Sea of Thieves, State of Decay, Minecraft Dungeons, and others are getting a very large amount of post-launch support. You have to wonder to what extent Xbox Game Pass is funding the budgets for these efforts, given that keeping people engaged in your titles will also keep people engaged with your subscription service. That being said, Microsoft has also invested mountains into smaller genres and unique indie titles, from truly great titles like Death’s Door to the oft-overlooked RTS genre’s Age of Empires IV. The variety in Xbox Game Pass is truly exemplary.

In terms of sheer entertainment hours-per-cost value, Xbox Game Pass is unbeatable.

What I Like About Xbox Pc Game Pass

Xbox Game Pass, is it worth your money?

Xbox PC Game Pass clearly has value for me, a regular PC gamer. For only $10 a month, I get unlimited access to favorites old and new, from “Lumines” to “Two Point Hospital.” I’ve already clocked over 50 gameplay hours in just a month of use, which is more time than I’ve spent on far more expensive, individual video games.

Some really enjoyable titles that I would have never paid for individually, I’m now getting to experience as part of my subscription. It takes the risk out of trying new games, since they cost me no extra money to play.

Another great benefit is that my friends and I can all play online co-op games together since we all have Xbox Game Pass now. Gone are the days of one of us not affording the game now everyone has access for the same price. “Sea of Thieves,” “Gang Beasts,” and “It Takes Two” have joined our regular rotation of games to play as a squad.

I also really enjoy the added flexibility of Xbox Game Pass on PC, because I can choose to play with a plugged-in controller or my keyboard and mouse. Some games, like “Katamari Reroll” are simply not as fun without a controller, but other games I just can’t play without the precision of a mouse.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: Recent Updates

During this presentation, we learned more about future games like Hollow Knight: Silksong coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one. Giving us our first look at Starfield and Redfall gameplay, we also learned more about Hideo Kojimas Xbox project, the next Sea of Thieves update, Diablo 4, and plenty more.

Compared to Nintendo Switch Online and Sonys recently revamped PS Plus, youre getting a lot for your money here.

The Only Place For Day

Over at Nintendo and Sony, youd be hard-pressed to find Zelda, God of War, The Last of Us, or any of these heavy hitters available on subscription services. With Xbox Game Pass you can pre-load Halo: Infinite and play it on day one. Same with Forza Horizon 5, Gears of War, Starfieldall day-one titles on Game Pass.

Almost more impressive is the suite of titles outside of platform exclusives. Indie games, racing, third party, first party, online, single-playerliterally hundreds of games ready to be downloaded. If classic games are your jam there are tons of backward compatible and retro titles: Banjo-Kazooie, Fable, Psychonauts, Oblivion, Crimson Skies, and more make up a solid lineup of Microsofts gaming past.

Microsoft Flight Simulator: Game Of The Year Edition

Microsoft Flight Simulator was already a boon to serious simulator lovers when it first arrived, but the Game of the Year edition hitting Game Pass is a greatly improved experience thats also friendly if its your first simulator and you want to learn the ropes. This edition includes added features like more tutorials to learn all the details, Flight Assistant mode while youre playing more casually, Map Labels to help you pin down specific spots, Land Anywhere mode to help those still mastering the ropes, and Discovery Flights for pure exploration. Thats in addition to the multiple world and sim updates that Flight Simulator has received since it came out in mid-2021. Its one of the best possible times to jump in, especially if you have a Series X that can take advantage of the real-world scenery.
