Crash Bandicoot Fans Are In Meltdown Over Xbox Exclusivity News

12:30, 19 January 2022 GMT| Last updated 12:30, 19 January 2022 GMT

Yesterday, Microsoft announced it’s planning to buy Activision Blizzard for nearly $69 billion. The implications of this landmark deal are many and wide-reaching, and we don’t fully understand them yet.

For now, it’s clear that Activision Blizzard’s wide roster of franchise will become Xbox-owned IP. That means the likes of , Overwatch, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro could all become Xbox exclusive in the future.

It’s worth noting that Xbox boss Phil Spencer has floated some vague corporate guff about not wanting to take any franchises away from PlayStation, but the fact remains that if it makes financial sense to do so, that’s exactly what they’ll do. See: The Elder Scrolls VIand Starfield.

This is, undoubtedly, a strange new world. The idea that Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, formerly PlayStation mascots back in the 90s, could now be Xbox ambassadors is brain-meltingly strange. Unsurprisingly, the more hardcore Crash fans out there are currently in chaos over the news.

The Crash Bandicoot subreddit seems deeply divided at this early stage. Many users see the buyout as a positive sign for the franchise, believing it will allow studios like Toys For Bob to step away from Call Of Duty and get back to making new Crash games. Others are afraid that Microsoft will neglect Crash in the same way it’s been neglecting to do anything with Banjo Kazooie or Conker for the last few years.

Character And Art Design

In March 1995, Universal Interactive and Naughty Dog recruited Joe Pearson of Epoch Ink to aid in the visual aspect of production. Pearson in turn recommended that Charles Zembillas of American Exitus be brought on board as well. Pearson and Zembillas would meet with Naughty Dog weekly to create the characters and environments of the game. Because the main character was Tasmanian, it was decided that the game would take place on a mysterious island where every possible type of environment could be found, with the added reasoning that an evil genius like Cortex would require an island stronghold. Pearson created a concept bible that included detailed backstories for Crash and Cortex and established the game’s setting as the remnants of the lost continent of Lemuria.

Gavin and Rubin described Cortex to Zembillas as ” a huge head but a tiny body, he’s a mad scientist, and he dresses a bit like a Nazi from The Jetsons“. Gavin owns Zembillas’ original ink sketches of Crash, while Rubin owns the original sketches of Cortex. Cortex was originally envisioned as a self-aware video game character who was bothered by the clichés he embodied and addressed the audience throughout the game. This aspect was removed after Naughty Dog decided that cutscenes would disrupt the game’s pacing. Cortex’s right-hand man Doctor Nitrus Brio, originally named “Needy Brio”, was developed as a foil.

As with all other Activision Blizzard games, Microsoft will start adding them as soon as they complete the deal and take formal control of the company.

Given the sheer size of the deal, this will be a rather long process that will probably end around mid-2023, and that’s when you can expect Crash Bandicoot games to appear on Xbox Game Pass.

Crash Bandicoot Tony Hawk Hexen All Likely To Return On Xbox

Xbox head Phil Spencer recently talked about Microsoft’s upcoming acquisition of Activision Blizzard and how iconic franchises will come to Xbox.

Xbox head Phil Spencer has discussed the franchises that will become part of Microsoft in the future, when the acquisition of Activision Blizzard is complete. This will include games in series like Crash Bandicoot, Guitar Hero, HeXen, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.

The recent announcement that Microsoft is attempting to acquire Activision Blizzard shocked the gaming world, as it would bring a number of big franchises under the Xbox brand, including , Overwatch, and World of Warcraft. Opinions on this acquisition have been mixed: some see it as a great opportunity to clean house in Activision Blizzard and fix a company that has been mired in controversy. On the other hand, there are people who see this sort of ownership as detrimental to the industry, with Microsoft suddenly gaining too much control over the fate of gaming in the future. The acquisition isn’t expected to be completed until 2023, so it will be a while before the effects of this purchase are known.

Will Crash Bandicoot Be An Xbox Exclusive

At the moment, we dont know if future Crash Bandicoot games will be exclusive to Xbox consoles. The Microsoft-Activision deal is so new that these sort of details havent been ironed out yet. If we had to guess, though, dont be surprised if Crash does become an Xbox console exclusive.

Thats based on the precedent set by Microsofts purchase of Bethesda back in 2021. Once that deal went through, they confirmed that the upcoming Bethesda RPG Starfield would be an Xbox console exclusive. Yes, the game isnt even a timed exclusive, and wont come to PlayStation consoles at any point. Given Microsoft wouldnt want to boost their rival hardware developers, it wouldnt be a surprise if they made most Activision titles exclusive.

However, the Crash Bandicoot franchise sits in a unique position due to its relationship with PlayStation. The first three games were developed by Naughty Dog, who went on to make Uncharted and The Last of Us. This original trilogy was also a PlayStation exclusive, as they came out before the first Xbox. Since then, Crash games have come out on both platforms. However, some games had PlayStation-exclusive content. 2019s Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled had PS4-exclusive skins and even a track. Given the close ties between Sony and Crash Bandicoot, there could be a tug-of-war over future releases.

Xbox Now Owns Legendary Playstation Series Crash Bandicoot Spyro The Dragon

    Crash Bandicoot 4: It
    • 0

A curious consequence of Microsofts earth-shattering $70 billion buyout of Activision is that Xbox now owns legendary PlayStation franchises Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. Sony made these games in collaboration with Universal Interactive back in the 90s, but that company was acquired by Vivendi which later merged with Activision to form Activision Blizzard.

Microsoft has now purchased Activision Blizzard and all of its intellectual property and development teams meaning that its to become the incumbent custodian of Crash and Spyro, assuming the acquisition closes. Many had hoped that Sony would, one day, wrangle the rights to the series back but that looks impossible right now.

PlayStation had partnered with Activision Blizzard to secure timed exclusivity and marketing rights for recent entries in both series, which made sense given its historic association with the brands. While theres been no comment from Microsoft about exclusivity as of yet, it seems safe to assume that itll handle the publisher the same way it has Bethesda, meaning the games will ultimately skip PlayStation in the end.

Gameplay Differences From Crash Bandicoot : Warped

For the most part, the gameplay in The Wrath of Cortex can be thought of as being the same as in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped but with different levels and some new vehicles, and with Crash’s movement feeling slightly different. Most of the elements of gameplay is the same from Crash 3, but there are some differences.

  • There is no multicolor gem path like Crash 2 and 3 both had.
  • Aku Aku crates twist in and out a little bit while unopen.
  • Unlike in Crash 1, 2, and 3, jumping off enemies onto other enemies, or spinning enemies into each other, or jumping from an arrow crate or bouncy platform onto an enemy never gives wumpa fruit or lives in The Wrath of Cortex. Therefore, the extra items cheat is absent in this game, although that was not an intended feature of Crash 2 or 3, either.
  • Body slamming on a bounce crate never gives any wumpa fruit, unlike in Crash 2 and 3.
  • Coco is fully playable in some platforming levels, unlike in Crash 3 where she was restricted to vehicle levels outside very short transitions. Her abilities and animations have some key differences from Crash, even if her gameplay mechanics still mostly work as a more limited variation of his . She can also now utilise two of the unlockable special abilities .
  • In addition, Coco’s gameplay is now more personalised, the hud details such as the life icon now have her likeness when playing, compared to Warped where they always displayed Crash regardless of the character playing.

Crash Bandicoot⢠4: Itâs About Time Announcement Trailer

In the official announcement about the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft confirmed that they are planning to “offer as many Activision Blizzard games as we can within Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.”

While this doesn’t exactly confirm that all games owned by Activision Blizzard are coming to Xbox Game Pass, it’s safe to say that new Crash Bandicoot games will probably be among the first ones to appear on Xbox Game Pass.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, the latest game in the series, is already available on Xbox One, Series X/S, and PC, so adding it to Xbox Game Pass will be an easy process.

The same goes for Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, the remake of the original trilogy from 2017, which is considered one of the best remakes of the last decade.

Things are getting a bit tricky with Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, the remake of the original Crash Team Racing, which is not yet released on PC and it’s not receiving new updates since September 2020. But there’s hope that this acquisition means we’ll see the PC version of the game, and that it will come to Xbox Game Pass.
