Reset Xbox One to Factory Defaults

If you leave your console on all the time, just allowing it to enter a low power mode between sessions, then a soft reset every once in a while can fix some problems.

There are two ways to achieve a soft reset:

    • Use the Power button on the console.
    • Use the on-screen menu option.

To use the first method, you simply press the Power button, release it, and check to make sure that the console powers down and that the video input to your television ceases. Once that has happened, you can push the button again to turn the console back on, and you have performed a soft reset.

To use the on-screen menu option:

  • Press the Guide button.

  • Navigate to Profile & system> Power.

  • Select Restart Console.

Get A Clean Start On Xbox One

Performing a factory reset on an Xbox One is quick and easy and may be necessary if you’re having some technical issues, or if you’re selling your console and want to remove your personal data.

A factory reset is a simple procedure that you can perform on both your Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X. This method will also work on Microsoft’s latest consoles, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

When you choose to perform a factory reset, you’re essentially rolling your Xbox back to the day it came out of the box, stripping it of all the personal information, games, apps, and data youve downloaded to it.

You can choose to retain certain games and apps, but the rest of the content on your console will be removed, giving you a squeaky clean system thats free of technical issues or identifying data in the event you make a sale.

Its not a particularly involved process, but there are a few different ways to go about it. You can visit the console dashboard to initiate a reset or use the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter if youre unable to access the console through normal operation. The method you use will usually depend on the state of your Xbox One and what youre looking to accomplish.

How do you go about performing an Xbox One factory reset? Follow the steps we’ve outlined for both methods below.

Why It’s Important To Listen For Power

The two noises signal that the Xbox has successfully identified the USB drive-in. It is critical to listen for those two tones, as they tell your system to begin updating automatically. The lack of those sounds or the power-down ding means that a potential error has occurred or there was an unsuccessful attempt at an update. If this happens, its a good idea to go ahead and restart the process altogether. If youve tried it a few times without any luck, we suggest you contact Microsoft for technical support.

Begin The Reset Process On Your Xbox Console

With your Xbox powered off, plug the flash drive into a USB port on the console. Press and hold the BIND button and the EJECT button . While holding these two buttons down, press the Xbox button on the console. Continue to hold down the BIND and EJECT buttons for an additional 10 to 15 seconds.

Note: The BIND button is also known as the pairing button. It is the same button one would press to pair a new controller to the console. If youre not sure where that button is located, refer to the diagram below. Also, when it comes to Xbox Series X/S consoles, this button is found on their front side.

At this point you should hear two power-up tones a few seconds apart. Release the BIND and EJECT buttons after the second tone. Also, feel free to remove the USB stick when the console restarts and powers on again.

Once your Xbox One X/S or Xbox Series X/S restarts, you should see your consoles Digital Setup Experience guide on your TV screen. This will indicate that your Xbox has returned to its factory settings.

Note: If you dont hear anything after 15 seconds, that means the process has failed. Also, if you hear any power-down tones, that also means youve entered the process incorrectly. Therefore, youll want to try the sequence again.

Help I Forgot To Factory Reset

If you no longer have physical access to your Xbox One but you didnt factory reset it, you may want to remotely wipe it like youd remotely wipe a phone or PC. Unfortunately, you cant perform a full remote factory reset. However, you can disable access to your Xbox profile and your personal data.

Youll need to change the password on your Microsoft account to do this. The next time someone attempts to use your profile on an Xbox One console, theyll need to sign in with your new password. If they dont sign in, they wont be able to access your profile and its personal data, such as any files you have stored in OneDrive.

To do this, head to the Microsoft Account website. Sign in with the same account you signed into the Xbox One with. Head to Security & privacy > Change password. Provide a new password here.

People will no longer be able to access the profile you saved on the Xbox One without entering your new password, so they wont have access to it. Youll have to re-enter your new password on other devices and apps youve signed into with your Microsoft account, too. For example, if you sign into Windows 10 with this password and have a PIN configured, youll need to provide your new password before you can sign in with the PIN. Youll be asked to enter your new password on your other devices when necessary.
