Good Sound Performance If You Tweak Settings
When Microsoft officially unveiled its Xbox Wireless Headset last month, the company said that it had “spent countless hours studying what makes for a great audio experience, using the headset in audio testing chambers to understand how it reproduces audio in different room environments. Well, I’m afraid this probably wont strike you immediately when you will turn on the Xbox Wireless Headset for the first time.
Personally, my first thought was that my old Xbox One Stereo headset had a more balanced and detailed sound, as the bass levels on the Xbox Wireless Headset were way too high for me. Loud sounds like gunfire and explosions in games like Call of Duty: Warzone didnt sound good, and I quickly went to the Xbox Accessories app to make some changes in the equalizer.
The Xbox Accessories app offers different profiles for Games, Movies, Music, or Speech, and theres also a toggle for a Bass Boost feature that I’ve always kept turned off. Since Im not an audio expert, I spent some time looking for better EQ adjustments, and I think I found something that really suits my tastes with the custom profile recommended by the YouTube channel GadgetryTech. Ive been using these settings ever since and it makes a night and day difference, with just enough bass to enjoy my games and music.
Whats Its Like To Use The Headset On Console And Pc
Overall, the Xbox Wireless Headset works pretty much the same on Xbox Consoles and PCs, though there are some minor things to note. The pairing process with Xbox consoles is pretty straightforward, you just need to long-press the power button on the headset to initiate the pairing mode, and then press the pairing button on the front of your Xbox console to sync the headset with it.
On Xbox consoles, you can also see a battery indicator for the headset when you press the Xbox Guide button, which will appear right next to the battery indicator for your controller. Unfortunately, theres no such indicator on Windows 10 yet, even though the Xbox Game Bar overlay now includes a battery indicator for Xbox Wireless Controllers. However, you can still check the battery level in the Xbox Accessories app, which is a universal app for Xbox consoles and Windows 10 PCs.
Be aware that once the Xbox Wireless headset is paired to your Xbox, turning the headset on will automatically turn on your console, and this can be quite annoying. Jason Ronald, Director of Program Management at Xbox recently that this is currently by design, but we have heard a few requests for the ability to disable it. As someone whos been using the Xbox Wireless Headset with both my Xbox Console and my gaming PC, I can confirm that the current behavior isnt really convenient.

How Do I Control The Audio Settings On Xbox Series X
When it comes to controlling your headphones’ audio settings, you have a few options. Many headphones and headsets come with their own in-line controls for muting and volume. If you’re using a headset that’s designed for gaming, it’s especially likely. However, you can always tinker with your audio settings directly from your console, which gives you more granular controls for volume, mixing channels, and mic monitoring. Here’s how you can do that, and what each setting means.
Press the “Xbox” button in the center of your controller to open the Guide.
Scroll to the bottom right of the guide to get to the speaker icon. You can also use the LT and RT buttons to scroll up and down quickly.
Press the “A” button to open the Audio section.
From top to bottom, the Audio section in the Xbox guide allows you to:
- Toggle your headset mic. This mutes the mic on your headphones if one is present. You can add one if you want, which I go over below.
- Control headset volume. This one is pretty straightforward: tinker with how quiet or loud your headphones are until you’re comfortable.
- Control headset chat mixer. Sometimes you may struggle to hear chat from your party or friends over a game’s audio or vice versa. You can change the mix of chat and game audio here to suit your needs.
- Control mic monitoring. Mic monitoring changes how sensitive your mic is on your headset. If your party or friends are struggling to hear what you’re saying, you can turn up mic monitoring to hopefully help.

Bonus: Best Dac For Ps4 And Switch: Sound Blaster G3
There are plenty of great DAC/AMP combos for use with desktop and laptop PCs, but those that effortlessly support consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch are much rarer. The best console DAC we’ve tested so far is the Sound Blaster G3, a tidy USB-C dongle that packs a ton of functionality into a compact and reasonably priced package.
Let’s take a look at what’s included. At the bottom of the device, there are three inputs for headphones, microphones and optical , while on the other end is a USB-C plug that can be converted to full-size USB . This setup covers you on the PS4, Switch and computers of all kinds, but while Xbox is supported via the optical input you won’t be able to use voice comms here.
The left side of the device allows you to mute or adjust the volume of your mic, while the right side allows you adjust the volume of your headphones.
