What Is Xbox Cloud Gaming And How Does It Work
Did you know you can play Xbox games on your mobile phone? Here’s how it works.
Cloud gaming has the potential to become the future of gaming, and Microsoft knows it. To help give its customers an exclusive peek into the power of cloud gaming before its rivals can, Microsoft has introduced the Xbox Cloud Gaming service.
So, how does the Xbox Cloud Gaming service work, do you join it, and what devices is it available on? Let’s find out.
What Games Are Available Via Xbox Cloud Gaming
Currently 168 titles are available to stream directly to your phone if you subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. You can find the full list of the titles on this Xbox News Post. While it’s not the complete assortment of titles available for Game Pass Ultimate, it’s a lot to get dropped at once.

Requirements For Xbox Cloud Gaming
Before jumping right in, there are a few requirements that Microsoft lists on its landing page. Heres a breakdown of what youll need in order to take advantage:
- Compatible Device:
- Apple Mobile Device with iOS 14+
There are a few potential hold-ups when it comes to interacting and playing these games. Not all games have been optimized to use touch-controls, nor have they been updated with support for a mouse and keyboard. This means that youll need a compatible Xbox controller or something like the Razer Kishi controller for your iPhone. Using the Kishi is a great option as it provides a no-latency connection compared to the Xbox controller which makes use of Bluetooth.
Xbox Cloud Gaming: How To Play Your Favorite Xbox Games On An Iphone Ipad And Laptop
You can stream Xbox games to iOS devices and Windows PCs. Here’s everything you need to know.
Cloud gaming may be the future, but the future isn’t quite here yet. It is, however, one step closer now that many Xbox Game Pass games can be streamed to iPhones, iPads and Windows PCs. Following months of limited beta testing, Xbox Cloud Gaming arrived earlier this summer to all Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, though still in beta.
After this hands-on was originally published, Microsoft also announced that Xbox Cloud gaming was coming to Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, as well as the last-gen Xbox One. Why would you want to stream an Xbox game to your Xbox? First, Xbox One owners could play newer Xbox Series X|S games without getting a hard-to-find new console, and cloud streaming also means you don’t have to set aside 40GB or more for each game to download and store locally.
Cloud gaming, or game streaming, is similar to watching a Netflix movie. The content lives on a remote server somewhere and is beamed to your screen in real time. Making cloud gaming harder to pull off than video streaming is the added complication of sending controller input up to the cloud, the game actions playing out on that remote server, then beaming the resulting video output back to your screen.
Here’s how to get in on the cloud gaming action, and what you need to know about it.

How Does Xbox Cloud Gaming Work
It may seem odd that you can play the latest and greatest games on something as small as your phone, but the key to Xbox Cloud Gaming is that your device doesn’t render any of the game’s graphics whatsoever.
When you use Xbox Cloud Gaming to play a game, Microsoft’s servers do all the heavy lifting for you. The servers load, process, and render the game for you, so your device need not have to lift a finger. Then, the server sends what it rendered to your device.
Of course, what’s a game without user input? In order to control the game, you use touch controls or a controller to send inputs to the server. The server then receives your inputs and translates them into the game.
In a way, it’s like watching a stream of a video game, except you control the character you see on-screen. As you might expect from a stream-based service, this whole process is highly dependent on how good your internet is.
If you have a bad connection, the visuals may look choppy and your inputs may lag behind. However, if your internet is good, the game will look and feel almost as if you were playing it natively at home.
What Do You Need To Use Xbox Cloud Gaming
- Android phone running Android 6.0 or higher
- Internet speeds of 10 Mbps down recommended
- Active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Subscription
- Xbox Game Pass app downloaded to your Android device
- A Bluetooth-enabled controller e.g Xbox One, DualShock 4, generic Android Controller
While not strictly necessary, what’s also highly recommended is to have some kind of clip for your controller to your phone so you don’t need to be propping up your Android device. There are also Android controllers on the market such as the Razer Kishi that work as a wraparound for your phone so you don’t need the clip itself.
Forza Horizon 4
Unfortunately for iOS users at this time, Cloud Gaming isn’t possible. It might come in the future, but for now you’ll unfortunately be left out.

How To Use Cloud Gaming On Xbox One & Xbox Series X/s
In order to use Xbox Cloud Gaming on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S systems, a system update is required. It cannot be used until the latest firmware update has been applied. Once the update is finished, all games that can be used with Xbox Cloud Gaming will have a small cloud symbol on the bottom right of their icon. The cloud symbol won’t appear if the game is installed to the player’s system. Once the game is uninstalled, the cloud symbol will appear on the icon. If the game is installed, then it cannot be played through cloud gaming.
In order to use cloud gaming, the player needs to find the game they want to play on Xbox Game Pass. If they click on the game’s icon, then a tab labeled “Play” with a small cloud symbol should be present next to the Install icon. Selecting Play will boot the game through Xbox Cloud Gaming and it will create a tab amongst the recently played games on the Dashboard, allowing the player to boot it up from the system menu, rather than needing to go through the Xbox Game Pass app again.
It bears mentioning that a game cannot be streamed at the same time as it’s being installed, but another game can. This means the player can’t play something like Hades through Xbox Cloud Gaming while it’s being installed to the hard drive, but all other games can be played. Playing a game through Xbox Cloud Gaming will pause the installation, however, and it won’t resume until the streaming session has ended.
Some But Not All Game Pass Games Are Included
This is only for a subset of a subset of your Xbox library. Games I’ve bought and downloaded individually, from Cyberpunk 2077 to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, are not included, only games from the Game Pass library. That library adds and removes games on a regular basis and not every Game Pass game is there, but a good number are. I’ve seen Outriders, Gears 5 and Doom Eternal, plus smaller indie games such as Subnautica and Outer Wilds.

How To Use Xbox Cloud Gaming On Android
Today Xbox Cloud Gaming has finally launched on Android to its beta form, previously only being available as part of the alpha Game Streaming App. With it, a total of 168 titles for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate can now be streamed directly to your compatible Android device. The process is fairly simple but there are a few finer details that you need to be aware of to be able to start playing Xbox games on your phone.

Patent Lawsuit With Oracle
On August 12, 2010, sued Google over claimed infringement of copyrights and patents related to the programming language. Oracle originally sought damages up to $6.1 billion, but this valuation was rejected by a United States federal judge who asked Oracle to revise the estimate. In response, Google submitted multiple lines of defense, counterclaiming that Android did not infringe on Oracle’s patents or copyright, that Oracle’s patents were invalid, and several other defenses. They said that Android’s Java runtime environment is based on , a implementation of the Java class libraries, and an independently developed virtual machine called . In May 2012, the jury in this case found that Google did not infringe on Oracle’s patents, and the trial judge ruled that the structure of the Java APIs used by Google was not copyrightable. The parties agreed to zero dollars in for a small amount of copied code. On May 9, 2014, the partially reversed the district court ruling, ruling in Oracle’s favor on the copyrightability issue, and the issue of to the district court.
In April 2021, the United Supreme Court ruled that Google’s use of the Java APIs was within the bounds of fair use, reversing the Federal Circuit Appeals Court ruling and remanding the case for further hearing. The majority opinion began with the assumption that the APIs may be copyrightable, and thus proceeded with a review of the factors that contributed to fair use.
Use A Compatible Device
The final piece of the puzzle is to make sure you have a compatible device that supports Xcloud.
Step 1: You can play from an iPhone, iPad, or compatible Android tablet or phone. On Apple devices, make sure you’ve got iOS 14.4 or later, along with Bluetooth 4.0.
Step 2: USB connections work with some controllers, so refer to the previous section for more info on that.
Step 3: As for Android, you’ll need Android 6.0 or later and Bluetooth 4.0 to play wirelessly.
Step 4: The other thing Microsoft recommends is having internet speeds of at least 10Mbps minimum with 5Ghz Wi-Fi in order to get the most out of your gameplay experience. Therein lies the problem with game streaming, as it’s tough for everyone to have internet speeds that can keep up with it.

My Xbox Game Pass App Doesn’t Have An Option For Cloud Gaming Yet
While Xbox Game Streaming is available, the issue might be that your app hasn’t been updated yet today. If you open up the Google Play Store, press the symbol with three lines in the top left, and select “My Apps & Games.” You’ll get taken to a new screen telling you which of your apps is available to update. Click Xbox Game Pass if it’s on this list. After downloading the update, when booting up the app and logging in, instead of only Console and PC options there will be a new option for Cloud.
Any of the games that appear in the Cloud section of the app you’ll be able to select. While there is an “install to” option, there will also now be a new “Play” button. Hitting that will begin your stream. At the top of the stream, if you begin to encounter any stutter/connection issues, an antenna with three signal waves around it will appear. If you find yourself having issues with your signal you might need to move closer to your router.
Xbox Cloud Gaming: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Subscription
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is required to run games from Xbox Cloud Gaming as of writing, and it starts at $15 dollars per month .
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate comes with a range of benefits that generally revolve around gamers who explore titles across multiple systems. I’ve written in the past about how there should be a cheaper Xbox Game Pass Lite that is solely for Xbox Cloud Gaming, but alas, we’re not quite there yet. Users on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate also get Xbox Game Pass for Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, Xbox Live Gold multiplayer for consoles, and also monthly perks that include DLC and in-game features for various games. Sometimes they even do trials of streaming services like Disney+ or Crunchyroll.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate’s full game list is truly enormous, with over 300 titles rotating in and out of the service. As for Xbox Cloud Gaming, the full list offers around 130 titles as of writing. Roughly a third of these games support touch inputs, but most will need a paired-up Xbox or PlayStation controller via Bluetooth to play. You can sign up for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate below.
