All games available through the Xbox Game Pass for PC are installed from the Microsoft Store app on Windows. The Xbox app is just an extension of the Microsoft Store to easily launch and manage your games that you get from the subscription among other Xbox Live features. The Xbox app does not need to be running for updates to occur automatically because the updates initiate from the Microsoft Store which is always running in the background when you boot up your PC.

You can disable auto updates to games and apps in the Microsoft Store through the Store’s settings.

You can also manually pause or cancel updates if they do start through the download queue in the Microsoft Store. To get to the queue select the account menu >

If anyone knows how to do this I would very much appreciate instruction, as I have very slow internet and it usually takes hours to dl manually. I usually miss the first day of play in the new season while dl manually.

• @Adeese sorry, just got home to check and when you switch to energy-saving mode, it tells you to switch back to instant-on mode if you want auto updates, so it’s the other way around. Thanks for the suggestion though. DpeifAug 28 ’15 at 23:02

Automatic Updates Stopped Working On Xbox One

Up until the last couple weeks my Xbox automatically updated games, apps, and the system. Now it doesnt and I have to do it manually. I have checked the settings and instant on is the power mode, when Xbox is off, turn off storage is not checked, keep my console up to date, keep my games & apps up to date are both checked. Pictures attached. As far as I know and have read thats all the settings for this to work and these are the settings that were used when it was working. Ive also done a reset and kept my games and apps. I havent had any luck searching online about this so far. And its almost impossible to talk to a person in Xbox support instead of a virtual agent. Any help would be appreciated!

If you do not turn off the PS5’s auto-update feature before 3 p.m. ET and your PS5 is in rest mode, Returnal will restart in order to apply the patch that is getting pushed out.

Do yourself a favor and don’t lose out on hours of progress because of some patch that may or may not fix the endless crashes and closed doors. Actually, if this patch does fix these things, that sounds pretty important. But still, turn off auto-update.

Of course, if Housemarque had implemented an auto-save system instead of relying on the PS5’s rest mode, stuff like this wouldn’t have to happen, but I don’t need to tell you that because you’re also probably shaking your fist.

Auto HDR is a feature that spans both the Xbox Series X and the PC, so I was curious how performance compared between PC and console. I connected the Xbox Series X to the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 to see for myself. The Xbox Series X does not support super-ultrawide aspect ratios, of course, so I placed the Odyssey G9 Neo into 16:9 display mode. All other settings remained the same.

The sunrise, and the area surrounding it, appears similar in both photos. Both Auto HDR on PC and native HDR on the Xbox Series X show a red-orange glow in clouds that doesnt pop in SDR. Auto HDR and native HDR share an overall boost in contrast that provides a better sense of depth, especially in the foreground.

However, native HDR on the Xbox Series X has an advantage in dark portions of the image. The gun held by the character shows more detail and contrast than on PC with Auto HDR turned on. The same can be said of the cliffside and trees, where portions of the terrain faced away from the sun become so dark that detail is lost. The PC photo appears too dark by comparison.

Halo: Reach looks great in Auto HDR, but this is a win for native HDR on the Xbox Series X.
