How The New Xbox One Screen Dimmer Works In The Xbox Fall Update

ByJez Cordenlast updated 15 October 17

The Xbox One is getting some updated screen saver features in the 1710 update, which is expected to land in October 2017.

The 1710 Xbox One update will also bring elements of Fluent Design, a redesigned home screen, a new guide, and much more. The 1710 update is currently in testing on the Xbox Insider Program, with the Alpha and Beta rings enjoying the most up to date features.

We recently got an advanced look at the new screen dimmer features, and they’re going live to the Alpha ring very soon. There’s nothing particularly ground breaking here, but it’s nice to see the feature evolve beyond its basic feature set.

Much like the current screen dimmer, you’re able to set specific time intervals for the screen to go dark. Under the “Idle options” menu, found under All Settings, and then Preferences. The screen saver now includes the time, mic info, and controller battery level. I feel as though there might be some room for additional customization in future updates, perhaps with different styles of screen saver, old-school Windows-style.

What Is Xbox Night Mode

Essentially, Xbox Night Mode allows you to dim the LED lights on your Xbox console and controllers. So, you can now reduce the amount of light your power button is emitting. Likewise with the controller, you can dim the Home Button and other lights you find on the device.

Not only that, but it also allows you to dim your screen, too. So if your screen is too bright, you can reduce the strain on your eyes by lowering the brightness from your console.

You can even schedule Night Mode. So, if you want ti to come on at certain times, i.e. when you want to go to bed, set your console up to dim all of your lights to nothing and you can sleep even while your console is on. This allows it to auto-update, for example, because you don’t need to switch your console off to get rid of those bright LED lights.

Choose The Best Color Depth

Xbox 360 slim unit shuts down if ventilation is insufficient?

The color depth setting indicates the number of bits used per pixel to represent on-screen colors. Essentially, when set to a higher value, your Xbox One will output a wider range of colors, with more incremental steps between color values.

Xbox One consoles can output signals at 24 bits per pixel , 30 bits per pixel and 36 bits per pixel , and while higher is often better, don’t mindlessly crank up the value to the maximum. Both your TV and game content set limitations on how significantly increased color depth is reflected on screen, with most consumer displays not supporting 12-bit video. While HDR10, the standard used by Xbox One X, requires a 10-bit panel, many without HDR support only offer 8-bit.

  • Open the Settings app on your Xbox One.
  • Navigate to the Display & sound tab.
  • Select the Video output tile.
  • Select the Video fidelity & overscan tile.
  • Choose your Color depth from the available options.

How To Get The Best Visuals From Your Xbox One

    ByMatt Brownpublished 30 March 18

The Xbox One cuts out the complexities of gaming, with a seamless setup and gaming experience. Unbox it, plug it in, walk through a few steps of set up, and then you’re good to go, with games, movies, and more just a few button presses away.

But to truly get the most from your Xbox One, you’ll need to take a deeper dive into the console. Jumping into its settings and tweaking just a few options, you may be able to squeeze the most from your console’s power.

Adjust Brightness From The System Settings Menu

You can enable auto brightness or change the level by heading to the System Settings of your Switch. Heres how to do it:

    Choose The Right Resolution

While the Xbox One packs cutting-edge visuals for games and video, it’s important to choose the right resolution settings for you. Making sure the output resolution of your console matches the maximum supported by your console ensures you’re leveraging its full potential.

To get the most of your Xbox One X and Xbox One S, 4K resolution can be enabled on compatible displays. Following the Xbox Spring Update, support for 1440p monitors is available too, alongside existing 1080p and 720p compatibility. By selecting the maximum supported resolution, you’ll be getting the sharpest, most defined image possible.

  • Connect your Xbox One directly to your TV or monitor over HDMI. Avoid using any HDMI switches and splitters to prevent throttling your maximum resolution.
  • Open the Settings app on your Xbox One.
  • Navigate to the Display & sound tab.
  • Select the Video output tile.
  • Choose the maximum supported resolution for your display.

Screen savers were originally intended to prevent screen burn-in when the display was showing a single idle image. While CRTs and older Plasma TV sets were particularly susceptible, modern TVs are generally more resistant.

Although it’s hard to see in the screen shots, a subtle noise pattern with varying intensity will scroll across the screen in horizontal and vertical bars. The idea is that the variation prevents your screen’s pixels from remaining at a high intensity, and it also helps scrubs image retention from the display from static UI pieces and similar bright, high-contrast elements.

Xbox One also allows players to customize the color space of the console, with “Standard ” and “PC RGB” settings available. Relating to different color spaces, this determines the which colors are displayed, according to your display’s supported space.

While PC monitors are built to output “RGB Full,” TVs are often built to output a narrower space, known as “RGB Limited.” By changing this option, you’ll be changing how the video signal is sent from your console and colors are represented by your TV.

Even though it might make sense to display the full RGB range regardless, using this on many TVs results in an unwanted side effect known as “black crush.” When attempting to output full RGB, darker parts of images can lose detail, making certain scenes much harder to view. In short, PC RGB can be recommended for some PC monitors, though for many, especially those on TVs, the recommended standard setting should be used.

  • Open the Settings app on your Xbox One.
  • Navigate to the Display & sound tab.
  • Select the Video output tile.
  • Select the Video fidelity & overscan tile.
  • Choose your Color space from the available options.

    Aspect Ratio & Sharpness

Next, your Xbox One X will display pattern consisting of two rectangles, a square and a circle. The goal is to make sure all of these shapes fit within the bounds of your screen and are not distorted.

In your TV’s picture settings, locate the aspect ratio option. Sometimes this option is referred to as image size. If there’s an option for original size or “just scan” as some manufacturers, such as Samsung, call it, select that.

Once both rectangles fit within your screen, open your TV’s picture settings and choose sharpness. Lower the sharpness as low as you can get it without making the lines on the screen blurry, then save.

By default, your Xbox One will automatically dim the screen after a set amount of time. This saves on energy and can help prevent issues like image retention in certain types of TVs. Instead of waiting for the screen to automatically dim, however, theres a way to manually trigger it at any time. Heres how it works. To manually dim your Xbox One screen, grab your controller and hold down the Xbox button until you see the power screen. This is normally where you can choose to power off your controller or the Xbox One console itself.Instead of choosing one of those options, however, instead press the X button on your controller. This will instantly put the Xbox One into idle mode and dim the screen. While your screen is dimmed, new notifications will appear in large text on the right side of the screen. This allows you to easily keep track of your Xbox downloads, messages, invites, and other events from across the room.Unlike normal notifications, the Xbox One will keep all of your notifications active while in idle mode so that you dont miss anything important while youre away from the screen. You can cycle through your notifications by using the left and right bumpers on your controller and use the Y button to launch them.
