Ps5 And Xbox Series X Backward Compatibility: What You Need To Know
Microsoft made a new batch of old games playable on Xbox Series X and S, in celebration of its original console’s 20th anniversary.
The PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S all play old games, with a few limitations.
Playing your old games on a next-generation console is a huge deal for people who want to check out titles they missed or revisit the past. Sony and Microsoft knew this as they launched their PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X last year, both having hyped up their consoles’ backward compatibility features. The latter even announced a new batch of old games it made playable on Series X Monday.
The two companies have been battling other console makers for decades — Sony since 1994 and Microsoft since 2001 — so they’ve both built up magnificent back catalogs filled with classics. Let’s take a look at how much of each of those libraries you can play on the new consoles and how you can transfer your saves.
Transfer The Content License
If you are using a totally new system but not just a new hard drive, you still need to transfer the content license to allow you to play the downloaded games on the new system. While, if you only want to replace the old hard drive, you dont need this step.
Here is a guide to perform a content license transfer:
Connect And Format Your Storage Device
Since an Xbox One is practically a Windows PC under the hood, its no surprise that the console plays well with external storage devices. For our purposes, you will need a hard drive that stores at least 256GB and connects via USB 3.0. Before we begin, note that formatting your drive for storage will delete everything currently stored on it, so make sure to back it up ahead of time.
When you plug the drive in, a pop-up will ask whether you want to use it to store media or as a general storage device. Select Format storage device and press A to prepare the drive for backing up your games and data. You will be prompted to name the drive, and then asked whether you would like to use it as the default storage destination for new games and data. Since were using it to transfer, you can just leave it as is. When the drive is formatted, you will see a notification.

Xbox Series Backwards Compatibility: What Are The Xbox Backwards Compatibility Improvements On Xbox Series X And Xbox Series S
As well as the above lists of supported Xbox One and original Xbox games, the Xbox Series consoles also offers backwards compatibility to Xbox One games and peripherals in what Microsoft describes as “our most powerful and compatible console ever”.
In a blog post in July 2020, Microsoft said: “It’s our intent for all Xbox One games that do not require Kinect to play on Xbox Series X at the launch of the console.”
Backwards compatible supported games on Xbox Series will benefit from several system-wide features:
- Backwards compatible games will run natively on Xbox Series X hardware, offering potentially higher framerates and resolutions, plus “significant reductions” in load times using the SSD. In early Digital Foundry tests, it offers “up to double the performance in the most demanding games”.
- “Select titles” can have framerate doubled, going from 30fps to 60fps, or 60fps to 120fps.
- HDR will be supported across backwards compatible games thanks to a “reconstruction technique”, even going back to original Xbox and Xbox 360 games.
- All titles will support Quick Resume, a system-wide feature which allows you to stop progress of multiple games and continue playing them later.
In May 2020, there was also the final tease from director of project management Jason Ronald that there are more games to come: “The team also continues to listen to feedback from the community on additional titles you would like to see added to the compatibility program.”
Can You Play Installed Xbox 360 Games Without Disc

Installing an Xbox 360 game on a hard drive requires between 4 and 8 gigabytes of free disk space. After installing a game on your hard drive, you still need to have the game disc in the disc drive when you start the game. Installing games on your hard drive improves load times and minimizes game disc access.

Transfer Xbox 360 Game Saves To Xbox One
The first thing that you need to do is to fire up your Xbox 360 and open up Settings followed by opening up the System Settings. From there, select Storage and select the device which contains your save files i.e. a USB device, an external HDD, or built-in storage.
Once done, choose the save file that you need to transfer, open up options, and choose either copy or move followed by transferring the said file to Cloud Save Games. This is all you need your Xbox 360 for since you can transfer multiple save files at the same time.
Next up, turn on your Xbox One and it will automatically start downloading your previous save files from the cloud storage. In case you do not want to use Cloud Save Games, you can transfer these to a compatible external HDD or a USB, provided that it is 3.0 and 256GB.
Finally, do note that you can use the same process to continue the process back and forth between the two consoles.

Microsofts Xbox One can now play a limited number of Xbox 360 games. But its not as simple as inserting any old disc and starting it up. Only some games will work, and the Xbox One runs them in an emulator.

How To Play Xbox 360 And Original Xbox Games On An Xbox One
Backwards compatibility on the Xbox one relies on emulation. What that means is the Xbox One doesn’t have the hardware components required to run games from previous generations, so it uses software.
Instead of running your disc-based games through an emulator, Microsoft has taken a slightly different route. Each backwards compatible game has been tweaked, packaged with an emulator, and made available for download.
When you insert a backwards compatible game into an Xbox One, your console verifies the identity of the disc and then provides you with the option to download an update. This update is actually the entire game packaged with an emulator.
Even though Xbox One backwards compatibility requires you to download a modified version of each game you want to play, and you don’t actually play the game on your physical game disc, you still need to have the disc inserted.
Microsoft uses this as a sort of protection to make sure that you actually own the disc, and to prevent you from downloading a backwards compatible copy to your console and then selling the physical disc.
If you have any backwards compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox games, here’s how to play them on your Xbox One:
Turn on your Xbox One, and make sure it’s up to date.
Insert an Xbox 360 or Original Xbox game.
If the game is backwards compatible, you will see the following message. Select Install to proceed.
Wait for the download and installation process to complete.

There are a few options, but straight transferring of licenses is not one of them. As @denis97g suggested, you could set your old account as Home Console to your account and play there, oryou could take your old account, and change the primary email address associated with it, and your new e-mail will be the lead email for the Microsoft Account. The trouble you might run into on that is if there are already existing services on the new account already, prior to changing the account, and for that you might need to cancel the subscriptions and re-subscribe on the swapped account.
I know that can be a bit confusing, but please let us know if you have any specific questions and we’ll be happy to help.

Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel
The Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel was introduced by Microsoft at E3 2006. Released in November 2006, the force feedbacksteering wheel controller includes the standard gamepad buttons and floor-mounted accelerator and brake pedals. Although the wheel is capable of running off the rechargeable battery pack, use of the force feedback and active resistance features requires an external AC adapter.
A limited edition of the force feedback wheel included the racing game Project Gotham Racing 3. There is also a “Hardcore Pack” for Test Drive Unlimited which makes the driving more realistic.
On August 22, 2007, Microsoft published a press release on Xbox.com saying that they will retrofit all the Wireless Racing Wheels for free that were manufactured from 2006 to 2007. This is due to a component in the wheel chassis that in rare cases may overheat and fail when the AC adapter is used to power the wheel. Users had to ship their wheel back to Microsoft for repair or replacement.
Other wheels include the FanatecPorsche 911 Turbo S Racing Wheel, which features force feedback, 6-speed shifter, sequential shifter and clutch pedal, and the Madcatz Dale Earnhardt Jr./NASCAR Racing wheel.
