How To Open The Xbox One Or Xbox Series X/s Controller

Xbox One Controller Disassembly (Shell Replacement)

Before proceeding, ensure your Xbox One controller is powered off. Place it on a table or similar hard surface with the tools within easy reach.

Follow these steps to open the Xbox One controller.

  • Remove the door to the battery compartment and set it aside.
  • Remove the batteries, saving them for later.
  • Using the plectrum or spudger, detach the plastic panels on the back of the controller’s “handles” where the controller sits in your hand. This can take a while, so take your time patiently wiggling the plectrum along each edge to unclip them.
  • With the controller face down, unscrew the five Torx screws. You’ll find two on the left, two on the right, and another beneath the label in the battery compartment. Put the screws aside safely for later.
  • The back panel should now simply lift off.
  • You can now lift out the main controller. Notice how this is a secondary plastic case, which houses a pair of PCBs .
  • At this stage you can now replace thumbsticks, D-pad, and the other buttons if you’re planning on some customizations.
  • Further disassembly at this stage requires some electronics knowledge so don’t proceed if you’re inexperienced with PCBs and electrical components .

Congratulations—you’ve successfully taken apart your Xbox One controller.

How To Add A Custom Shell To Your Xbox One Controller

A custom Xbox One controller certainly stands out and what you may not know is that it’s really easy to build one yourself.

One of the most immediately obvious customizations is a new shell, and with some fairly cheap parts and tools and about 15 minutes of your time, you can transform the look of your controller.

Here’s everything you need to know.

    Remove Additional Xbox Apps

If you search your PC, youll still find several Xbox-related apps living on your computer. While you cant get rid of system-level settings and apps, such as Game Bar and Xbox Networking, you can remove the following:

    • Xbox Game Overlay
    • Xbox Identify Provider
    • Xbox Speech To Text Overlay

Once again, always back up your files before removing apps via PowerShell in case something doesnt go right.

Youll use PowerShell just like you did to remove the main Xbox app. However, youll enter each of the following one at a time. Hit Enter after each line and wait for the removal process to complete.

    Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Xbox.TCUI | Remove-AppxPackageGet-AppxPackage Microsoft.XboxGameOverlay | Remove-AppxPackageGet-AppxPackage Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay | Remove-AppxPackageGet-AppxPackage Microsoft.XboxIdentityProvider | Remove-AppxPackageGet-AppxPackage Microsoft.XboxSpeechToTextOverlay | Remove-AppxPackage

As with removing the Xbox app, if you receive an error with any of these, change the Microsoft portion of the line to *appname* where appname is the app listed after the word Microsoft. For example, Microsoft.XboxGameOverlay would become *xboxgameoverlay*.

When finished, restart your computer. Some files may linger, but these are leftover app files. You can use a search tool to find these files and delete them. You can also use Windowss built-in tools or a system cleaner.

    Remove Xbox From Windows 10

While its easy to remove most apps from Add or Remove Programs, you dont have an uninstall option for Xbox. Instead, you have to take an alternate approach using the Windows PowerShell. While it looks similar to the command prompt, it works a little differently.

The process is quick and shouldnt cause any problems with your PC. However, its always a good idea to back up your files just in case.

To get started, open the Windows Start menu and type PowerShell. You dont need to see a search bar to type the search term.

When the results appear, click Run as administrator on the right side of the menu under Windows PowerShell. Youll need administrator rights to do this. If your user account doesnt have any administrator rights, youll need to have someone log in who does have those account rights.

Wait for the PowerShell window to open and the prompt to appear.

Type the following and press Enter.

    Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.XboxApp | Remove-AppxPackage

If you get an error message, try the following instead:

    Get-AppxPackage *xboxapp*| Remove-AppxPackage

This should remove Xbox completely, at least the app itself.

How To Add New Grips To Your Xbox One Controller

We’ve all been there. In the heat of the battle, your palms get a little clammy and suddenly the slick plastic of your Xbox One controller isn’t your friend.

What you need is some actual grip. Some controllers come with it built in, like the Elite Wireless, Razer’s Wolverine controllers and custom options from Scuf Gaming. But you don’t need a new controller to get some grip.

It’s really easy to add some yourself for just a few dollars. I’m not talking about silicon skins or anything, instead I’ll be showing you how to replace the grip panels on the controller with something much better. Here’s what you need and how you do it.

Remove Torx Screw Behind The Battery Pack

Located behind the battery pack cover is a sticker with device and warranty information. The middle of this sticker is covering a screw that is needed to separate the front, and back of the Xbox One controller.

This will void your warranty on the controller. Microsoft will not repair a controller or console that has been tampered with.

Poke a hole in the sticker with your screwdriver. Remove the screw behind the sticker and set it aside in a safe place for when we reassemble the Xbox One Controller.

Repair The Xbox One Controller Thumbstick

Headshot Controllers Xbox One Controller Shell removal

Various repairs can be performed once the Xbox One controller is open. Unresponsive buttons can be checked and thumbsticks repaired.

The Xbox One controller is prone to thumbsticks coming loose. In most cases this problem can be resolved by gluing a small pole of metal—perhaps from a thumbtack—into the thumbstick itself and pushing this into the analogue controller mounted on the circuit board.

These steps follow the process on Microsoft’s latest third-generation controller design. Keep in mind that performing modifications on Xbox One controllers can void any warranties.

  • Insert the pry tool between the controller grip and faceplate, starting near the trigger.
  • Follow the outer seam with the pry tool, breaking the grip panel away until detached.
  • Repeat to remove the second grip panel.

  • Remove the controller battery door.

  • Screw back in the two rear screws using a T6 Torx screwdriver
  • Removing The Outer Shell

The first step is to remove the outer plastic shell that conceals the innards of the system. To do this, you must start by removing the face plate. Take a look at the front of the Xbox 360 and insert your thumb into the door that covers the two USB ports on the right of the unit. With your other hand squeezing the upper and lower sides of the face plate, pull out the face plate with your thumb. With not much force, the face plate should pop right off.

After the face plate has been pulled off you will see a silver Microsoft sticker covering a gap remove this. You will also see four small clips locking the top half of the plastic shell to the bottom half. Do not attempt to wedge the clips out at this point.

With some care, gently bend outwards, the right gray ventilation shield on the right side of the unit so that you can see a bit inside. You will notice that the gray side piece attaches to both the bottom and top white chassis. Now look through the holes on top of the unit to locate the areas where the gray side pieces attaches to the white body. What you need to do is take the long but thin metal stick and push down, through the white holes where the clips of the gray side pieces connect. Slowly pull out the gray pieces away from the unit while unlocking the clips and eventually the gray piece will release itself.

How To Uninstall And Remove The Xbox App In Windows 10

Microsoft includes a number of pre-installed Universal apps in Windows 10. One such app is Xbox. It allows you to track your Xbox social activity and achievements, record game clips, and stream games from Xbox One to PC. The app connects to the Xbox Live community where you can chat with friends, share captured screenshots and gaming videos and play multiplayer games common to the PC and Xbox One. If these things are not for you and you have no use for the Xbox app, here is how you can delete it completely.

Remove The Xbox One Controller Handle Covers

The next step is to remove the handle covers from the side of the Xbox One controller. This will allow you access the torx screws to remove the front and back panels of the controller.

Id highly recommend using something like a small plastic trim tool so you dont damage the plastic on the controller.

If you dont happen to have a plastic trim tool, you can gently pry the plastic cover handles off with a small flathead screwdriver.

Note: This may damage the plastic finish on your controller.

The easiest way to remove the handles is to insert your plastic trim tool or flathead screwdriver at the base of the handle where the back, sides, and front of the controller molding all meets.

Once you get hold of an edge, gently pry it off the controller. You might hear a few snaps those are typically the clips releasing. Just make sure nothing is broken in the process.

You can always buy replacement parts controller parts on Amazon if you accidentally break parts and need to replace them.

Safely Disassemble Your Xbox One Controller For Easy Fixes

The Xbox One controller is generally accepted as one of the best video game controllers around, but they still break down and need repairs from time to time. While you can take apart an Xbox One controller without too much trouble, there are a few potential snags to be aware of, and you’ll also need a couple specialized tools that you may not already have laying around.

    Performing Xbox One Controller Repairs

Once you have successfully taken apart your Xbox One controller, you can attempt to make repairs. Some problems can be fixed by simply cleaning components, while other issues require you to replace components. In some cases, advanced skills like soldering are required to remove and replace components. Depending on your experience level, some of those repairs are better left to the professionals.

Other fixes are much simpler, like repairing or replacing the d-pad ring. If your d-pad isn’t responding correctly, try this quick fix:

  • Use a prying tool or tweezers to carefully pop off the spring steel d-pad ring.

  • Carefully lift up the arms on the d-pad ring so that they apply more pressure, and reassemble. If that doesn’t fix your problem, you may need a new d-pad ring.

    Clean Inside The Xbox Controller

The next stage is to clean the interior body of the Xbox One controller.

This means wiping around the buttons and lifting them off if necessary. The same applies to the D-pad and thumbsticks.

Shoulder buttons and triggers should also be cleaned. Take care here, as pushing in the wrong way can detach the mechanism. Similarly, the rumble motors should also be gently cleaned as these can pick up dirt and dust.
