You can also enable the option Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering to reduce the strain on your graphics card.

  • What Are The Best Ways To Fix Streaming Lag In Xbox App

Before you try with any solution, you should test your Xbox One streaming first. It will get you better insight in the situation, as it will help you decide what is the best streaming quality for you. To run the streaming test, do the following:

  • Open your Xbox app
  • From the hamburger menu on the left, go to Connect
  • Select your console
  • And go to Test Streaming
  • After the test is finished it will give you all needed details, and you can perform some of the following solutions, based on the test results.

Fix Lag On A Wireless Network

As you play on your PC, there may be some lag depending on your Wi-Fi network speeds. One way to speed up a choppy stream is to use Ethernet instead, if thats an option. You can also use the Xbox Console Companion app to tweak the fidelity of the stream, resulting in a faster-moving picture, although at the expense of image quality.

    • To access the drop-down menu, hit the menu button on the top-right part of the display, near the full-screen button.
    • If you want to look at the granular details of the stream, like bit rate, bandwidth use, and more, click the button that appears near the bottom left part of the screen.

I dont use the Xbox Console Companion app on my PC too often, but it comes in handy when I want to play Xbox at the same time that others prefer to watch something else on the TV. Its particularly useful for slow-paced games where the speed of your inputs doesnt come into play, but I found it to be sufficient for games like Asuras Wrath, which relies on quickly completing events to make progress.

    Plug Directly Into Your Modem

This may seem like the most obvious one, but we have a lot of new livestreamers out there. And honestly, even grizzled livestream vets such as myself forget to plug in directly to the modem sometimes.

Laggy livestreams are usually caused by one of two things: youre either having a problem with your internet connection or youre overloading your computer. When possible, you should be streaming using a wired connection. Plug that ethernet cable directly from your modem to your computer. It will speed up your live video stream, and is more reliable than a WiFi connection.

What if you don’t have an ethernet port on, say, your new MacBook? Don’t worry. You have options. You can buy a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter for less than $30.

If your issue is that your connection is dropping because you’re too far away from your modem and router, you can buy a mesh WiFi system. These devices will give your WiFi signal a boost and extend its range. They can be a bit costly, though, starting at $200.

Another option is to buy a better wireless router. Those too can range in price from under $100 to more than $350.

Problem : Your Streaming Resolution Is Too High

Your streaming resolution is the resolution of the video you send out across the internet.

It is a separate entity from your in-game resolution.

For example, you could be playing Doom at a resolution of 1440p but you are encoding the stream at a resolution of 1080p.

Generally speaking, these two resolutions can increase the resources indeed to encode the stream in 2 ways:

  • The higher the resolution of the stream the more CPU/GPU resources it will need to encode in real-time. For example, a stream at 4k resolution needs roughly 2-4 times the computational power to be encoded over 1080p.
  • The difference between your gaming resolution and streaming resolution can increase resources needed to encode the stream. For example, if you are playing at 4k but want to downsample that resolution to 1080p for your stream, the encoder has to in real-time resample every single pixel. So, you want to closely match the streaming resolution.
  • So what is the solution to these problems?

    Using The Right Software

OBS is a great option for livestreamers, new and old. First and foremost, its completely free. Second, its extremely powerful. You can run some pretty intensive video broadcasts using this free piece of software. Its available for both Windows and Mac too. However, there is a learning curve. And, as you saw earlier when I ran down just a few of them, theres some pretty intricate settings options. This is great if you want complete control and know how to use it. It can be overkill if youre just looking to run a high-quality, yet simple video stream.

As a Mac user, Ive started using a fairly new livestreaming app: Ecamm Live. This $15-a-month software was released in 2017 and was clearly built to be the most native livestreaming solution available for MacOS. Ive noticed that my Macbook Pro runs more quickly and outputs a smoother livestream when using Ecamm Live versus other apps.

Ecamm Live is also extremely easy and straight forward to use too. For example, all those OBS settings I mentioned earlier for an optimal stream? Ecamm Live will automatically adjust your bitrate as you stream.

Yes, some advanced users might want to fiddle with bitrate settings. But Ecamm Live is much more intuitive. PC users shouldn’t be discouraged that it’s not available for Windows. OBS can do everything you need and more. It just has a steeper learning curve.

Your Frames Per Second or Framerate is how smooth the motion is displayed. For most games, a setting of 30 fps will be just fine. However, for higher motion games like first-person shooters where running, jumping, and quick camera pans are common, an FPS setting of 60 can help keep things super crisp.

Problem : Youre Watching Your Own Stream On The Same Computer While You Play

Encoding a live stream is very taxing on your PC hardware. But did you know decoding, watching the stream, actually impacts your PC just as heavily.

In fact, the difference between encoding and decoding a live stream is negligible as they are pretty much identical processes, they are just revered in order depending on whether youre encoding or decoding .

If your encoding, information is compressed and encoded. If your decoding information is decoded and then uncompressed.

And all this happens in a fraction a second.

Its taxing for a PC to do the encoding. But then asking the same PC to decode your own stream, while encoding that stream, and while playing a game, is going to make even the mightiest PC fall to its knees and beg for mercy. Your frame rate will fall off a cliff and youll experience server lagging while you stream.

Problem : Your Gpu Is Selected To Encode The Stream Instead Of Your Cpu

Ok, this is opposite to the CPU problem above.

Most games these days, at least 90%, are GPU bound. That means that a games maximum frame rate is determined by the GPU. This usually means that the graphics cards usage is effectively maxed out.

But therein lies the problem: if your stream is being encoded on your GPU, you will be splitting the GPUs already limited resources across two very computational heavy problems: The game and encoding the live stream.

Fortunately, just like the CPU, there are a number of solutions to this problem.
