Fortnite: How To Set Up Split
Fortnite has a split-screen feature for PlayStation and Xbox that allows friends to play together on one device. It can be set up in minutes.
Fortnite, like most battle royales, is the kind of game that is best enjoyed with a friend or two, but for a long time, each member of a squad needed to play on their own device for strictly online multiplayer. At the start of Chapter 2, Season 1 in 2019, developer Epic Games introduced split screen so players could use the same console when gaming together. Split-screen play currently works only on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, so mobile, Nintendo Switch, and PC users still can’t access the feature. It is also only available for Fortnite: Battle Royale Duos and Squads Modes and will not work in Creative Mode, Limited-Time Modes, Save the World, Team Rumble, or Solos. Players can also use split-screen when cross-playing between console platforms
Setting up split-screen to play on one console with friends or family is not too difficult. Only a stable Internet connection and second controller are required. While there are some drawbacks to using split screen, it does not apply to everything in Fortnite, only the match. As the big Season 5 finale event draws closer, Duos and Squads can grind for XP or participate in the event together without needing separate devices or to trade off. Here’s how to set up and use split-screen to play Fortnite with friends or family.

Setting up a split screen on an Xbox in Fortnite is almost identical to the process on PlayStation.
- Youll need to log into Fortnite with your main account, and set up a duo or a squad lobby. Once the lobby is ready to go, take out your second Xbox controller and press or hold the Xbox button until the side menu appears.
- Sign in with a separate Xbox account through Switch Profile or create one before logging in. After completing the login process, a new menu item on the bottom right corner of your screen should appear. Pressing and holding the button A will let the second player log into Fortnite, but the game may ask you to link a Fortnite account first.

We recommend creating a separate Epic account for split-screen purposes so new guests wont have to link their accounts all the time.

Are There Any Disadvantages To Playing Fortnite On Split Screen
If you have a competitive spirit, you should know that the split screen feature significantly reduces your screens real estate per player. This makes it harder to spot enemies and can make building fights more challenging.
You can make up for this by communicating with your split-screen partner or squadmates, however, since callouts will help you find enemies that you otherwise might not be able to see.
Since your system will be powering two instances of Fortnite, the usual frames-per-second values will suffer as well. The average FPS you should get while playing on split screen will range between 30 and 45.
More Information Regarding The Mode
If one player disconnects from a Fortnite split-screen match, the split-screen session will end. Furthermore, this screen will be active only in a match and it will not affect the lobby.
It is important that both players have the same language settings or the split-screen may not work. Since two players are using the same console, the mode requires a stable internet connection and it will not work properly in poor network conditions.

Can You Play Fortnite In Split Screen On Nintendo Switch Or Pc
The split screen feature is only available on PlayStation and Xbox for now. The main reason why it isnt available on Nintendo Switch is that the device isnt powerful enough to run two instances of Fortnite side by side.
While most gaming PCs will be powerful enough to run three instances of Fortnite, Epic has no way of identifying different users like it can on consoles. The separate accounts that you can assign to other players on consoles allow Epic to tell the difference between player one and two.
You can still use other devices to squad up with your friends thanks to the crossplay feature of Fortnite, however.

How To Play Fortnite Split
Split-screen mode is now a permanent feature for Fortnite, at least on certain consoles and if you know the trick to use it
Couch co-op is always the best way to play any multiplayer game but its a feature with a complicated history on Fortnite, after being promised, taken down, and switched back on leaving many confused as to whether its even an option at all.
It is, at the moment, but only on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, so you cant currently play it on Nintendo Switch, PC, or mobile.
Its not immediately obvious how to use it, but the process is fairly simple although it only works with Squads and Duos mode.

Why You Need Two Accounts For Fortnite Split Screen
Even though youll have two people playing Fortnite on the same console, separate Epic Games accounts are needed to track and save the progress of each player and store any items they may unlock or purchase.
Epic Games is the company behind Fortnite. Epic Games accounts sync save data between devices so the one Epic Games account can be used to play Fortnite on console, PC, and mobile.
If youre going to be playing Fortnite on either an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console, youll need an Xbox account for the same reason. Similarly, if youre playing on a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5, youll need a separate PSN account for each player.
The following steps will walk you through setting up accounts, connecting them correctly, and then how to do split-screen on Fortnite Xbox and PlayStation style.
Tips For Playing In Split
Although its fun to jump into a bit of couch co-op, you wont want to overlook the potential downsides. The biggest and most obvious issue is that it will cut your screen size in half. This makes teamwork and communication paramount, as youll rely heavily on your teammate to let you know what theyre seeing. The split-screen option will only show feeds in horizontal orientations, and you cant switch it back to vertical. This isnt the worst thing in the world, but if you prefer to run your co-op vertically, it might take some adjusting. So long as youre mindful of these drawbacks, the split-screen mode can be a lot of fun and is a great way to introduce your friends to the Fortnite craze.

Not All Game Modes Are Compatible
It should come as no surprise, but Solo Mode is not available when playing split-screen online multiplayer. This would lead to an unfair advantage in a battle royale, as two people on the same couch could coordinate their attacks together and effectively work as a team against all the other single players. For that reason, Solo Mode is not compatible with split-screen play. You’ll also be unable to play in Creative Mode or Team Rumble.
Instead, you’ll be stuck with either Squads or Duos mode. These are the only two modes that work when two players are using the same console, and there’s no word from Epic Games on whether this will change in the future.
You might also want to consider that:
- The split-screen session will end if one player disconnects, even if the other player stays logged in.
- You wont see each others lobby or menu because screen sharing only starts when a match is in session.
- Players will not share an inventory.
- Both players have to select the same language setting because split-screen cant handle multiple languages.
How To Play Fortnite Season 7 In Split Screen
First, here’s the bad news Split Screen mode isn’t supported on the PC or Nintendo Switch, nor will it work on Mobile.
The good news? Setting it up on your PlayStation 4 or Xbox One is as easy as pie provided your friend has a PSN ID or Xbox Live Account respectively.
If you’re both logged into PSN and Xbox Live, simply head over to the game’s lobby and hold X or A to join the same pre-match room.
If Player 2 has an Epic account, they can even retrieve their skins and emotes.
Only Player 1 needs to have Xbox Live for both players to be able to play, while PlayStation owners don’t need to have PlayStation Plus to play at all.
You can also only play certain modes, so Team Rumble or Creative are off-limits, as is Solos for obvious reasons. Player 2 is also forced to leave the Battle Bus when Player 1 chooses to.
