Performing An Offline System Update By Usb

How to Reset Xbox 360 Factory Settings

If youre experiencing issues and want to perform a factory reset to solve them, you may not need to go that far. You can perform an offline system update via USB, which can roll back any failed updates or other issues keeping your Xbox One from working properly. If you have an Xbox One S, Xbox One S Digital, or Xbox One X, performing an offline system update is fairly straightforward. The original Xbox One requires a few more steps.

Offline System Update With Xbox One S And Xbox One X

Step 1: Find a compatible USB flash drive. You will need a totally empty flash drive with at least 4GB of available space. It also has to be formatted for NTFS, which is the default Windows file system. Find your USB drive in the File Explorer, right-click it, and select Format. On the next screen, you can leave everything as is except for File System. Change that to NTFS if it isnt already set that way.

Step 2: Download the update file to your computer and extract it into the USB flash drive. You can find the zipped update file from Microsoft here. Extract the file and copy $SystemUpdate onto the root directory of the USB flash drive. It should be the only file there. Once the transfer is complete, eject and unplug the USB device and return to your console.

Step 3: Power down your Xbox One and remove both the power and network cables from the back. Wait 30 seconds once it is completely off.

Step 4: Plug in the power cable and insert the flash drive into the USB port.

Step 5: Press and hold the Bind and Eject buttons on the console, then press the Xbox button.

Step 6: Continue holding Bind and Eject for 10-15 seconds until the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter loads. Once it does, select Offline System Update. Wait while the system updates, and youre good to go. If the update fails, you may need to restart your console and try again. If youre still having issues, contact Microsoft for technical support.

If your Xbox One or Xbox Series X refuses to launch a game, has trouble loading files, or just experiences issues that standard troubleshooting wont solve, try a factory reset. What Is Factory Reset

Xbox One factory reset wipes the data stored in the hard drive and returns the software settings to its factory state. This reset will erase all saved game data, installed apps and games, and other settings that you configured before. In other words, the software will revert to a state when your console was first shipped.

Reasons why you might want to factory reset your Xbox One

Doing a factory reset is usually a recommended troubleshooting step if you encounter problems that regular steps like soft or hard reset cant fix. For example, if your console keeps on freezing or crashing games all the time, its possible that there may be a software issue behind it, or the game in question may have corrupted files. To fix the problem, you can perform a factory reset to bring back the known working factory state of the software.

You also need to factory reset your Xbox One if you plan in giving it away or if you want to sell it. Doing so will remove all your personal information such as your gamertag, saved games, downloaded apps and games, from the hard drive.

If you no longer have physical access to your Xbox One but you didnt factory reset it, you may want to remotely wipe it like youd remotely wipe a phone or PC. Unfortunately, you cant perform a full remote factory reset. However, you can disable access to your Xbox profile and your personal data.

Youll need to change the password on your Microsoft account to do this. The next time someone attempts to use your profile on an Xbox One console, theyll need to sign in with your new password. If they dont sign in, they wont be able to access your profile and its personal data, such as any files you have stored in OneDrive.

To do this, head to the Microsoft Account website. Sign in with the same account you signed into the Xbox One with. Head to Security & privacy > Change password. Provide a new password here.

People will no longer be able to access the profile you saved on the Xbox One without entering your new password, so they wont have access to it. Youll have to re-enter your new password on other devices and apps youve signed into with your Microsoft account, too. For example, if you sign into Windows 10 with this password and have a PIN configured, youll need to provide your new password before you can sign in with the PIN. Youll be asked to enter your new password on your other devices when necessary.

    Reset Your Xbox From Settings

If your Xbox is booting up fine, then you can easily restore it to factory settings from the Settings app. Also make sure your system software is updated to the latest version released by Microsoft. You can do this by simply navigating to Settings > System > Updates.

The exact steps differ depending on whether you have an original Xbox One or the newer One X/S models. The steps below will broadly apply to each of them:

  • Open the Settings app and navigate to System
  • Choose Console Info and select Reset Console
  • Now you will have two choices: Reset and Remove Everything or Reset and Keep My Games & Apps
  • Reset and Keep My Games & Apps will reset the system software alone without removing your games and apps. You should try this less intensive option first if youre trying to troubleshoot an issue with the console. You can solve your issue AND avoid downloading all your games again.

Reset and Remove Everything resets not only the firmware but removes all your data as well and completely restores factory settings. Use this option as a last resort or if you are selling or giving away your console for good.

  • When you have made your choice, select the respective option. Note that there will be no confirmation message once you select the desired option.
  • Your Xbox will start erasing data and restoring factory settings. This process can take some time.
