Performing An Offline System Update By Usb

How to RESET your Xbox One to Factory Settings when Selling it.

If youre experiencing issues and want to perform a factory reset to solve them, you may not need to go that far. You can perform an offline system update via USB, which can roll back any failed updates or other issues keeping your Xbox One from working properly. If you have an Xbox One S, Xbox One S Digital, or Xbox One X, performing an offline system update is fairly straightforward. The original Xbox One requires a few more steps.

How To Wipe An Xbox One

To wipe your Xbox clean of all your personal details so that its ready for the next owner, proceed with the following steps:

  • Press the central, lit button on your controller
  • Choose Settings from the menu on the left
  • Select System, then Console Info
  • Choose the option to Reset Console
  • You will be asked whether you want to keep apps or other personal information choose the option to remove everything
  • The console will begin the reset process and may restart a few times. When it reaches the point where its asking you to press the button on the controller, youre safe to go
  • Its not entirely clear whether this process cleans the data on the console to an entirely secure state . The speed at which the reset takes place makes me suspect its not a full wipe, but I might be wrong.

However, youd have to be seriously unlucky to find the person youre selling the device to is a skilled data thief. For 99.99% of all Xbox One sales, this process will be fine.

    Factory Reset Xbox One

When changes made to an Xbox One after it left the factory are reversed, and the console is returned to a state similar to that when it was first shipped, this is called a factory reset.

In other words, all your saved games on your Xbox One will be wiped, but this resetting is quite effective to restore the console to proper working order.

    Tip:

To factory reset Xbox One, please refer to the following steps:

Step 1: Press the home button on the Xbox One controller when the console is on. And go to System.

Step 2: Access the Xbox One Settings menu by pressing the gear-shaped icon.

Step 3: Choose System from the left panel and then choose the Console info section.

Step 4: Go to Reset console and choose Reset and remove everything for a full factory reset. Please note there are other two options as the following image shows:

    • Reset and keep my games & apps: This is your primary choice when troubleshooting. This option just resets the OS and deletes all potentially corrupted data without deleting your games and apps. In other words, this choice is not the best one when you run into the problems that are caused by the corrupted game files.
    • Cancel: Select this option if you dont want to restore your console to the factory state.

Now, wait for a while as the Xbox One restores itself back to its factory settings.

Begin The Reset Process On Your Xbox Console

With your Xbox powered off, plug the flash drive into a USB port on the console. Press and hold the BIND button and the EJECT button . While holding these two buttons down, press the Xbox button on the console. Continue to hold down the BIND and EJECT buttons for an additional 10 to 15 seconds.

Note: The BIND button is also known as the pairing button. It is the same button one would press to pair a new controller to the console. If youre not sure where that button is located, refer to the diagram below. Also, when it comes to Xbox Series X/S consoles, this button is found on their front side.

At this point you should hear two power-up tones a few seconds apart. Release the BIND and EJECT buttons after the second tone. Also, feel free to remove the USB stick when the console restarts and powers on again.

Once your Xbox One X/S or Xbox Series X/S restarts, you should see your consoles Digital Setup Experience guide on your TV screen. This will indicate that your Xbox has returned to its factory settings.

Note: If you dont hear anything after 15 seconds, that means the process has failed. Also, if you hear any power-down tones, that also means youve entered the process incorrectly. Therefore, youll want to try the sequence again.

The Difference Between Resetting Hard Resetting And Factory Resetting

Before you factory-reset your Xbox One, make sure you know about the different types of resets that your console can undergo:

    • When you turn your Xbox One off normally, it goes into a low-power mode, so when you turn it back on, that’s just a regular reset or soft reset. The console never actually turns all the way off.
    • When your Xbox One powers down all the way and turns back on, that’s called a hard reset. It’s similar to what happens when you shut down a computer, and no data is lost.
    • When changes that have been made to an Xbox One after it left the factory are reversed, and the console is returned to a state similar to that when it was first shipped, this is called a factory reset. This process restores the factory settings and permanently deletes all of your games, saved data, and other settings.

If your Xbox is booting up fine, then you can easily restore it to factory settings from the Settings app. Also make sure your system software is updated to the latest version released by Microsoft. You can do this by simply navigating to Settings > System > Updates.

The exact steps differ depending on whether you have an original Xbox One or the newer One X/S models. The steps below will broadly apply to each of them:

  • Open the Settings app and navigate to System
  • Choose Console Info and select Reset Console

  • Reset and Keep My Games & Apps will reset the system software alone without removing your games and apps. You should try this less intensive option first if youre trying to troubleshoot an issue with the console. You can solve your issue AND avoid downloading all your games again.

Reset and Remove Everything resets not only the firmware but removes all your data as well and completely restores factory settings. Use this option as a last resort or if you are selling or giving away your console for good.
