How To Fix Worn Out Xbox One Controller Thumbstick Springs

Xbox One Wireless Controller Thumbstick Replacement ...

If you still experience drift after attempting to fix your thumbstick pads or determine that they were neither dirty nor loose, then the next easiest fix is to replace your thumbstick springs. If only one thumbstick is giving you trouble, only replace the springs on that thumbstick.

To perform this fix, youll need:

    • Prying tool
    • Analog stick springs
    • Tweezers

A lot of controllers, including Xbox 360 controllers, use the same analog stick component as the Xbox One controllers, so you can take springs from an old controller. You can also buy a replacement analog stick and take the springs from that.

Heres how to replace the springs in an Xbox One controller analog stick:

  • Disassemble your controller using a pry tool and T-8 or T-9 safety Torx.

    Jeremy Laukkonen

  • Carefully pry off the green plastic covers on the bottom and right side of the thumbstick assembly.

    Jeremy Laukkonen

If you break either plastic cap, you will have to replace the entire analog stick module, which requires soldering.

  • Remove the springs.

  • Reassemble your controller and test operation.

Periodically, Microsoft offers special editions of its Xbox One controllers for fans who are looking for something a little extra. We particularly like this 2021 design that features red, gray, and black camo. Its a nifty design that goes well with just about everything, and includes all the latest controller upgrades like textured grips on the triggers and bumpers, hybrid D-pad, a share button, and more. Everything works with the Xbox One, and if you are ever ready to upgrade to the Series X then full compatibility is assured for that model as well!

A fourth revision of the controller was released in November 2020, which is bundled with Xbox Series X and Series S, and backwards compatible with existing Xbox One consoles. It has a refined build with a slightly smaller body, a “Share” button on the center of the controller below the “View” and “Menu” buttons, a circular dished D-pad similar to the Elite Controller, and a USB-C connector instead of USB Micro-B. The controller also supports Bluetooth Low Energy, and can be paired to a Bluetooth device and an Xbox device simultaneously. Microsoft announced in June 2021 that the Xbox Design Lab will continue with the Series X/S controllers, allowing users to create their own custom designs.

How To Replace Your Worn Out Playstation 4 Thumbsticks

When the PlayStation 4 launched in late 2013 many outlets, including Polygon, heaped praise on its newly redesigned controller, called the DualShock 4. But after a year and a half of steady use, many owners are suffering from torn rubber thumbsticks a design flaw whereby the solid plastic core of the stick tears through the outer rubber cover.

It’s an issue you can get taken care of under the standard 1-year warranty. Once that’s passed however, the official word from Sony is that you’ll need to buy a new $60 controller.

But there is a cheaper solution.

Hop on eBay right now and you can order up a set of replacement thumbsticks for as little as $6, a fraction of the cost of a replacement DualShock 4. And, if you’re not a huge fan of the DS4’s sticks, you can even swap them out for sticks identical to the ones found inside Xbox One controllers. As it turns out, they’re interchangeable.

Polygon decided to give it a try. How challenging is this little surgical procedure? Your mileage may vary, but for us it took about a half hour and felt like something between building a model airplane and wiring up the motherboard in our first computer. Here’s hoping this guide helps you out.

Before we get started, wrangle up a small Phillips head screwdriver and a pair of needle-nosed pliers.

    Now. Where were we?

Flip your DualShock over and remove each of the four screws from the underside.

Go ahead and put the bottom half of the controller to one side. We’re done with it for now.

How To Change The Grips On Your Xbox One Controller

  • Use the plastic pry tool to prise one of the rear grips away from the controller. It’s best to start at the top by the triggers as you have an easier edge to get into.

  • Once the grip has popped away, firmly pull away from the controller body. It’s connected by plastic lugs, but they’re pretty sturdy and you’ll have to be firm.
  • Repeat steps one and two on the other side.

  • Firmly push down on each new grip to attach them to the controller. They should be a seamless fit, assuming you bought good quality parts.

  • That’s all there is to it. I’ve purposely gone for this style because it’s similar to that which Scuf uses on its custom controllers and find that it offers a better feeling than soft-touch grips like you find on the Elite Wireless or Razer controllers. There are plenty out there, so ultimately the choice is yours, but the process remains the same.

And if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you can combine new grips with some trigger stops like the Bionik Quickshot. These will improve your FPS games in particular while also giving you a great grip on your controller.

What Is Xbox One Controller Drift

The most common situation involves drift in the left analog stick, which usually manifests in your character constantly looking up in first-person games. However, the right stick can also suffer from drift issues. You may also notice that when you move one of the analog sticks in any direction, it will continue registering that movement even after taking your thumb off the stick.

When Xbox One controller drift occurs, there are three main causes:

    • Worn out thumbstick pad: Each thumbstick consists of a boxy sensor component with a moveable shaft on top and a rubber or plastic component that snaps onto the shaft. If the rubber or plastic piece becomes worn, replacing or repairing it will fix your drift issue. In some cases, a similar issue can be caused by dirty thumbstick pads.
    • Worn out springs: Each thumbstick sensor component has two springs that help snap it back to the center whenever you remove your thumb. When one or both springs wear out, youll notice drift. Replacing the springs fixes that problem.
    • Bad thumbstick unit: Each thumbstick consists of a boxy sensor component thats soldered to the controller circuit board. This component can fail internally, in which case the only possible fix is to replace it with a new part.

    Hori Fighting Commander Octa

Xbox One Controller Disassembly – Joystick Replacement

The standard Xbox One controller is great for many games, but it struggles with 2D fighting games the default layout of the buttons and the directional pad arent ideal for the quick movements needed in the genre. To solve that, Hori made the Fighting Commander line, with the most recent Octa model perfect for both Xbox One and Series X. Its a controller that bears a remarkable resemblance to a certain Sega controller from back in the early 1990s, with D-Pad, joystick, and shoulder setups made for gaming. The Octa also is wired, which is necessary for serious fighting game events.

The configuration of the Fighting Commander is a little different than other controllers, with the RB, RT, LB, and LT buttons all located on the right side and two extra buttons included on the left side. The curved design of the back is more ergonomic than the controllers of yesteryear, but it should feel perfect for anyone who played Mortal Kombat on Genesis. The controller wont set you back much, either, costing less than all other options on our list, and its much smaller than a traditional full-sized fight stick.

    How To Replace Ps4 Thumbsticks

Disassembling the PlayStation 4 DualShock thumbstick can be a bit complex. Thankfully, the tools arent that complex. You just need a #2 Phillips screwdriver, a plastic pick, and a nylon spudger. In a pinch, you can use a small standard screwdriver instead of a spudger, but its not recommended. One slip, and you can permanently damage your whole controller.

To begin with, remove all four Phillips screwdrivers from the bottom of your controller. Next, separate the top half of the controller from the bottom. The top half is a glossy black, while the bottom has a textured feel. Squeeze the top half along the hand grips, and youll hear the clips release. Pull the two sides apart, and youre ready to go to work. Be careful, though. The two sides will still remain connected at the shoulder buttons. So youll have to fold the controller open like a book.

Once the motherboard is free, replacing the thumbsticks is a simple matter. Its a basic friction fit, so replacement is very easy. Just pull off the old thumbsticks, slide the new ones on, and youre ready for reassembly.
