Performing Xbox One Controller Repairs
Once you have successfully taken apart your Xbox One controller, you can attempt to make repairs. Some problems can be fixed by simply cleaning components, while other issues require you to replace components. In some cases, advanced skills like soldering are required to remove and replace components. Depending on your experience level, some of those repairs are better left to the professionals.
Other fixes are much simpler, like repairing or replacing the d-pad ring. If your d-pad isn’t responding correctly, try this quick fix:
Use a prying tool or tweezers to carefully pop off the spring steel d-pad ring.
Carefully lift up the arms on the d-pad ring so that they apply more pressure, and reassemble. If that doesn’t fix your problem, you may need a new d-pad ring.
Pair The Wireless Xbox Controller Again
Your computer may already have the Xbox controller drivers. However, suppose youre using an Xbox Wireless controller on your console after using it on a PC. In that case, you need to re-sync the controller. The rule is the same both ways.
So, lets follow these steps to connect a wireless Xbox controller to your Windows computer. We also recommend repairing the controller as a general process to fix Xbox controllers on PC.

Why Take Apart An Xbox One Controller
If your Xbox One controller isn’t working right, and you’ve already and gone through some basic troubleshooting like checking the batteries, the next step is usually going to be taking the controller apart.
Here are some fixes that require taking apart your Xbox One controller, including advice on what to do after you’ve opened the controller up:
- Malfunctioning d-pad: Carefully pry up the tabs on the spring assembly so it pushes down with more force. Replace if necessary.
- Drifting analog sticks: Clean or replace the analog stick units as necessary.
- Inoperable audio jack: Verify that the jack is properly seated and making contact, and replace if necessary.
- Sticking buttons: Use canned air and other methods to remove gunk and other buildup after removing the circuit board assembly from the controller housing.
What Is Xbox One Controller Drift

The most common situation involves drift in the left analog stick, which usually manifests in your character constantly looking up in first-person games. However, the right stick can also suffer from drift issues. You may also notice that when you move one of the analog sticks in any direction, it will continue registering that movement even after taking your thumb off the stick.
When Xbox One controller drift occurs, there are three main causes:
- Worn out thumbstick pad: Each thumbstick consists of a boxy sensor component with a moveable shaft on top and a rubber or plastic component that snaps onto the shaft. If the rubber or plastic piece becomes worn, replacing or repairing it will fix your drift issue. In some cases, a similar issue can be caused by dirty thumbstick pads.
- Worn out springs: Each thumbstick sensor component has two springs that help snap it back to the center whenever you remove your thumb. When one or both springs wear out, youll notice drift. Replacing the springs fixes that problem.
- Bad thumbstick unit: Each thumbstick consists of a boxy sensor component thats soldered to the controller circuit board. This component can fail internally, in which case the only possible fix is to replace it with a new part.

How To Repair Worn Out Thumbstick Pads
If you find that your Xbox One controller has the wrong joystick configuration, youll have to start over and move on with an easy repair.
Although lazy or worn finger pads arent the most common cause of this problem, its the best place to start because its the easiest and quickest thing to try.
- To perform this repair, you will need:
- isopropyl
- T-8 or T-9 safety Torx
- Fingerstick board or alternative chip option
Once youve collected these items, heres how to fix them:
1. Pour isopropyl alcohol into a cotton swab.
2. Remove the fingers from the back and wipe the rounded surface with alcohol.
3. Gently move the joystick while carefully clearing everything out.
4. Check to ensure youve cleaned Joyces steak properly and examine the process.
5. If the joystick sticks or goes down, disconnect the Xbox One controller using the Pry tool and the T-8 or T-9 safety Torx.
6. Check the fingertip sticks to see if they are in the correct position, and try rotating them to see if they are open.
7. If the pads of the fingers look soft, remove them.
8. Replace the finger pads with new ones, or enclose them in a piece of paper or plastic such as foil, and see if they feel soft.
9. Reconnect the console and check the operation.
If Your Xbox One Controller Keeps Disconnecting
What if your Xbox controller pairs but then keeps disconnecting? This can ruin a great gaming session and is extremely frustrating to deal with.
Do remember that it’s a normal battery-saving feature of the Xbox One controller to disconnect if you don’t use it for 15 minutes. This won’t happen when playing games, but can come into play if you primarily use your Xbox One as a media center.
You’ll need to move a stick or press a button every so often. Otherwise, you’ll have to reconnect it later by pressing the Xbox button.
However, if you’re having a problem with your Xbox controller disconnecting, it probably happens much more frequently than every 15 minutes. If that’s the case, you can try a few troubleshooting steps.
It’s important to confirm that your batteries are charged when you have this issue. Tap the Xbox button to go back to the Home menu, then look for the battery icon in the top-right corner. If they’re low, replace or charge them as necessary.
Frequent disconnects can also happen because of interference. The Xbox One controller has a wireless range of about 19-28 feet, according to Xbox Support. Try moving closer to your console if your controller won’t stay connected.
You should also remove obstructions between the controller and console, like laptops, metal shelving, and similar. If your Xbox is inside an entertainment center, try moving it outside the unit to get a better connection.

Remove Connected Xbox Accessories
Sometimes Xbox One accessories, attached either to the controller or console, can introduce connection issues.
If you have an external hard drive, keyboard, or similar peripheral connected to your Xbox, try disconnecting it and then attempt to connect your controller again. Do the same for the Stereo Headset Adapter on your controller, if you have it.
If you’re trying to sync your controller using a USB cable, make sure you’re using a high-quality cord. Low-quality or damaged cables may not work correctly.
Fix: Xbox One Controller Wont Connect To Pc
Its a well-known fact that controllers from different platforms and consoles can be used on others as long as certain steps are undertaken beforehand. For example, it would be a shame if someone had to buy additional controllers for his PC when he already has a couple of PlayStation 3 controllers lying around.
Fortunately, there is a way to make them all compatible with each other and sometimes you need to use an adapter and sometimes you dont. The most important issue users want to fix is making various controllers compatible with their PC. This process is not difficult but its outcome is not so certain.
Xbox One is a relatively new console manufactured by Microsoft and its natural to expect that its controllers are going to be compatible with Windows PCs. That is true and there are ways to connect your Xbox One controller to your computer either by using a Bluetooth connection, an Xbox one adapter or by using a micro USB cable. You should stay aware of the fact that Bluetooth connection only works if you use Windows 10 with Anniversary Update installed. If you own any other operating system, you will need to connect your controller using a micro USB cable.

Update The Xbox Controller Firmware
Your Xbox One controller actually has its own firmware that receives updates at times. While it doesn’t get these updates often, corrupted or outdated firmware could cause disconnection issues.
If your controller is functional, you can update it by tapping the Xbox button to open the Guide while your system is on. Go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
Select your controller, then choose the three-dot button and hit Firmware version to check for updates.
How To Take Apart An Xbox One Controller
Before you can take apart your Xbox One controller, find a clean and clear workspace that’s well lit. You will also need to obtain the following tools if you don’t already have them:
- T-8 safety Torx
- Prying tool
You can use a Torx bit in a driver or with a socket wrench, or use a dedicated Torx driver, but it has to be a T-8 safety Torx. You can tell the difference between a regular Torx and a safety Torx by the small hole found in the tip of a safety Torx. Without this small hole, a regular T-8 Torx will not fit into the Xbox One controller screws.
For the prying tool, you can use anything that’s thin enough to fit inside the gap between the controller housing and the end covers. Try to use a plastic tool if possible to avoid damaging the housing of your controller.
Here’s how to take apart your Xbox One controller:
Use a prying tool to gently separate the right or left grip cover.
Once the covers have started to separate, you can finish carefully pulling them off by hand.
Repeat the process with the other grip cover.
Remove the battery cover.
If your controller has never been taken apart, the sticker inside the battery compartment will be intact. You will need to push through the sticker with your Torx bit or cut it away to access the hidden screw.
You are now ready to remove the screws, starting with the hidden screw inside the battery compartment. Use a T-8 safety Torx bit, and be careful to properly seat it and apply even pressure to avoid stripping the screw.

Dont worry your pixelated hero hasnt become sentient. The more likely explanation is a phenomenon known as stick drift. While more commonly associated with the PlayStation 5s DualSense or the Joy-Cons, this can also happen to the Xbox controller, as the three controllers all use essentially the same joystick design. This is where your controllers analogue stick fails to centre itself properly after a directional push, resulting in involuntary camera or character movements.
This issue is generally caused by wear and tear, and shouldnt happen with a new controller. But the good news is that it can be fixed. There are two ways of doing this one is easy and doesnt involve opening your controller up the other does.

How Can I Repair My Xbox One Controller Buttons Not Working

As our team explained earlier in this text, there are several controller conflicts when your Xbox One controller firmware is out of date. Therefore, it is really necessary to install the latest firmware updates. If the buttons on all of your Xbox One controllers are not working, the first step is to update the firmware with updates.

Locating The Xbox One Controller In The Device Manager
If the drivers are fully updated, there is one solution that usually feels the most logical. It turns out that not every micro USB cable works for the controller and there is a specific type needed to be used. What causes the issue is the fact that certain micro USB cables only provide power transfer and they would work for Xbox 360. However, the Xbox One controller can only use the data sync cables which provide both power and data transfer. The prime example of this issue is the fact that you cant use the cable from your regular Xbox One controller to connect to your PC since there is no data being transferred.
This can make it difficult for users to find the perfect cable. The cable you want to use should be micro USB, type B, and it should be a data/sync cable so make sure you let the guy in the tech market know what you want. Also, if you must turn on the controller first and then plug in the cable to make it work. Moreover, do not plug into USB 3.0 ports.
Update The Controllers Firmware
Another common cause of Xbox keeps disconnecting from controllers is outdated firmware.
In particular, your controller becomes unstable and glitchy when it needs an update. After some time without an update, it may also fail to sync with the Xbox.
That said, if your connection is unreliable, the console may fail to update the controllers firmware automatically. So, you may have to do it yourself:

How To Fix Stick Drift On Xbox One And Series X/s Controller With Pressurised Air
This is the first port of call when combatting that pesky stick drift, which is likely to be caused by a build-up of dust, grease and dead skin cells after many hours of playtime. Step one is to buy some pressurised air.
Once youve got your hands on that, you can start the process of fixing your Xbox One controller. Turn it off first, of course, then use the air tube to blow at the bottom of your analog sticks. Move them around a bit as you do so, but make sure to not do it constantly as it can damage the controller if used too much. Short, sharp bursts should do the trick.
After this is done, carefully wipe away any excess dirt and wiggle your sticks around the full range of motion for a couple of minutes. Hopefully, this will have fixed your issue.
